Book SynopsisThis book offers the Greek text and an English translation of Aristarchus of Samos's On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and Moon, accompanied by a full introduction, detailed commentary, and relevant scholia.Aristarchus of Samos was active in the third century BC. He was one of the first Greek astronomers to apply geometry to the solution of astronomical problems as we can see in his only extant text, On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and Moon. Alongside the Greek text and new English translation, the book offers readers the Latin text and English translation of Commandino's notes on the text. Readers will also benefit from a comprehensive introductory study explaining the value of Aristarchus's calculations and methodology throughout history, as well as detailed analyses of each part of the treatise. This volume will be of interest to students and scholars working on ancient science and astronomy and the general reader interested in the history of Table of Contents1. • Taylor & Francis Reconciling Art and Technology

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines two venerable cultures, art and technology, and uses the young interdiscipline of cognitive history combined with case studies of both ancient and modern artifacts to explore, and unveil, some of the bridges by which this reconciliation of two seemingly distant and oppositional cultures can be effected.Art and technology are commonly regarded as oppositional. While both are concerned with made things â artifacts â and both have their origins in pre-literate antiquity, the primary purposes they are intended for are quite distinct: the artifacts of technology serve utilitarian purposes while those of art serve affective needs. This opposition between art and technology, notably argued by such scholars as Lewis Mumford and George Kubler is challenged in this book. For, when we consider art and technology as creative phenomena, then many significant, interesting, and often subtle commonalities emerge whereby a reconciliation â a unity â of these two great cultures seems possible. This book utilizes case studies of both ancient and modern artifacts â ranging from the Nataraja sculpture of ancient India, a great astronomical clock of ancient China, and Japanese Samurai swordmaking, through Gothic cathedrals and Renaissance paintings of Europe to English Elizabethan machinery to the French Impressionists to modernist concrete structures and paintings in both East and West. This book will be of interest to students and professional scholars interested in the histories of art and technology, cultural history, and creativity studies.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Routledge Handbook of the History of Sustainability is a far-reaching survey of the deep and contemporary history of sustainability. This innovative resource will help to define the history of sustainability as an identifiable field. It provides a unique resource for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and scholars, and delivers essential context for understanding the current state and future path of the sustainability movement. The history of sustainability is an increasingly important domain within the discipline of history, which draws on an interdisciplinary set of fields, ranging from energy studies, transportation, and urbanism to environmental history, economics, and philosophy. Key sections in this handbook cover the historiography of sustainability, resilience and collapse in historical societies, the deep roots of sustainability (seventeenth century to nineteenth century), the recent history of sustainability (twentieth century to present), and Table of ContentsA. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisEcocriticism has steadily gained footing within the larger arena of early modern scholarship, and with the publication of well over a dozen monographs, essay collections, and special journal issues, literary studies looks increasingly 'green'; yet the field lacks a straightforward, easy-to-use guide to do with reading and teaching early modern texts ecocritically. Accessible yet comprehensive, the cutting-edge collection Ecological Approaches to Early Modern English Texts fills this gap. Organized around the notion of contact zones (or points of intersection, that have often been constructed asymmetrically-especially with regard to the human-nonhuman dichotomy), the volume reassesses current trends in ecocriticism and the Renaissance; introduces analyses of neglected texts and authors; brings ecocriticism into conversation with cognate fields and approaches (e.g., queer theory, feminism, post-coloniality, food studies); and offers a significant section on pedagogy, ecocriticism and eTrade Review'Moving from Shakespeare and Milton to logging and perfume distillation, the contributors to this collection valuably trace the lines of association that connect early modern English literary and cultural activity to our current global ecological condition. The result is a stimulating and readable anthology of early modern ecostudies, offering valuable resources for teaching and future scholarship alike.' - Bruce Boehrer, Florida State University, USA'With the essays collected in this book, Munroe (Univ. of North Carolina, Charlotte), Geisweidt (Univ. of New Haven), and Bruckner (Chatham Univ.) make a valuable contribution to the literature on ecocriticism...This volume will benefit those new to the subject, scholars already working in the field, and experienced academics seeking ways to bring ecocriticism into the classroom. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisTracing the continuities and trends in the complex relationship between literature and science in the long nineteenth century, this companion provides scholars with a comprehensive, authoritative and up-to-date foundation for research in this field. In intellectual, material and social terms, the transformation undergone by Western culture over the period was unprecedented. Many of these changes were grounded in the growth of science. Yet science was not a cultural monolith then any more than it is now, and its development was shaped by competing world views. To cover the full range of literary engagements with science in the nineteenth century, this companion consists of twenty-seven chapters by experts in the field, which explore crucial social and intellectual contexts for the interactions between literature and science, how science affected different genres of writing, and the importance of individual scientific disciplines and concepts within literary culture. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe main part of the third volume of Dr Whiteside's annotated and critical edition of all the known mathematical papers of Isaac Newton reproduces, from the original autograph, Newton's elaborate tract on infinite series and fluxions (the so-called Methodus Fluxionum), including a formerly unpublished appendix on geometrical fluxions. Ancillary documents include, in Part 1, papers on the integration of algebraic functions and, in Part 2, short texts dealing with geometry and simple harmonic motion in a cycloidal arc. Part 3 reproduces, from both manuscript versions of Newton's Lectiones Opticae and from his Waste Book, mathematical excerpts from his researches into light and the theory of lenses at this period. An appendix summarizes mathematical highlights in his contemporary correspondence.Table of ContentsPart I. Researches into Fluxions and Infinate Series: 1. • Cambridge University Press The Mathematical Papers of Isaac Newton Volume 4 16741684 The Mathematical Papers of Sir Isaac Newton v 4

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume reproduces the texts of a number of important, yet relatively minor papers, many written during a period of Newton's life (1677â84) which has been regarded as mathematically barren except for his Lucasian lectures on algebra (which appear in Volume V). Part 1 concerns itself with his growing mastery of interpolation by finite differences, culminating in his rule for divided differences. Part 2 deals with his contemporary advances in the pure and analytical geometry of curves. Part 3 contains the extant text of two intended treatises on fluxions and infinite series: the Geometria Curvilinea (c. 1680), and his Matheseos Universalis Specimina (1684). A general introduction summarizes the sparse details of Newton's personal life during the period, one â from 1677 onwards â of almost total isolation from his contemporaries. A concluding appendix surveys highlights in his mathematical correspondence during 1674â6 with Collins, Dary, John Smith and above all Leibniz.Table of ContentsPart I. Researches in Algebra, Number Theory and Trigonometry: 1. Approaches to a General Theory of Finite Differences; 2. Problems in Elementary Number Theory; 3. Codifications of Elementary Plane and Spherical Trigonometry; 4. Miscellaneous Notes on Annuities and Algebraic Factorization; Part II. Researches in Pure and Analytical Geometry: 1. Miscellaneous Problems in Elementary Geometry; 2. Researches into the Greek 'Solid Locus'; 3. Miscellaneous Topics in Analytical Geometry; Part III. The 'Geometria Curvilinea' and 'Matheseos Universalis Specimina': 1. The 'Geometry of Curved Lines'; 2. Specimens of a Universal System of Mathematics; Appendix.
