Taylor & Francis Ltd State Building and International Intervention in
Book SynopsisThe presence of international missions in weak and failing states across the globe confirms that multi-lateral involvement has become a strategic imperative to secure international peace and security. With demands for democratic governance and peaceful coexistence in countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq, the questions and issues addressed in Bosnia take on greater urgency. Focussing on Bosnia after the Dayton Peace Agreement (DPA) in 1995, this book examines the role of the international community in state building and intervention. It makes two arguments that challenge conventional, power-sharing approaches to conflict management based on group representation and elite collusion. First, the author explores the idea that effective intervention requires moving beyond the dichotomy between international imposition of state-building measures and local self-government. When compromise among the former warring parties proves impossible and domestic institutions cannot autonomousTable of Contents1. Introduction 2. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Ethnic Penalty
Book SynopsisPopulations of visible ethnic minorities have steadily increased over the past few decades in immigrant-receptive societies. While a complex calculus of push and pull factors has motivated this increase, one of the main impetuses for this migration has been the search for employment, better wages and a higher standard of living. It is therefore not surprising that the educational attainments of the first generation and beyond have achieved convergence with, or exceeded the non-ethnic minority cohort. These outcomes may suggest a greater propensity for visible ethnic minorities to attain labour market success and to fully integrate within the community. However, the narrative derived from statistical analysis, interviews and participant observation suggest an uneasiness boldly to claim this as the most convincing conclusion at this juncture. The Ethnic Penalty argues that a penalty has impeded the occupational success of ethnic minorities during the job search, hiring and promotion proTrade Review'The Ethnic Penalty is a compelling study that explores ethnicity and difference in a contemporary multicultural state. Skillfully meshing ethnographic field work with long term quantitative data Hasmath persuasively demonstrates the subtle and various modes of discrimination that shape the lives of migrants and their children across their life course.' Catriona Elder, University of Sydney, Australia 'For those who have never worried about the part their ethnicity plays in occupational achievements, living and working in their countries of birth, The Ethnic Penalty by Dr Reza Hasmath of the University of Melbourne is an eye-opening experience. Using information obtained in Toronto, the book explores the myriad reasons currently in circulation for why ethnic minorities have difficulties achieving same occupational levels as their non-ethnic counterparts, despite being increasingly educated in common schools and universities... The book’s large amount of quantitative data, coupled with the extensive field work, help make for a compelling read that truly highlights this area of research’s many issues... a compelling and thought-provoking read, highlighting the many forms of discrimination immigrants can face over their lifetime, as well as the manifestation of this discrimination in the education and labour market.' Migration Australia 'The empirical evidences in this book are impressive... Hasmath’s contribution to the study of social position of non-white immigrants in Canada is noteworthy. It provides a lucid and intriguing read into the ethnic penalty, which shapes the lives of migrants and their offspring, and will be of great value to scholars and practitioners in the field of migration.' It traces the development of school building design, focusing on Western and Southern Africa, from its emergence in the 19th century to the present day. Udukuâs analysis draws attention to the past historic links of schools to development processes, from their early 19th century missionary origins to their re-emergence as development hubs in the 21st century. Taylor & Francis Sor Juana InÃs de la Cruz and the Gender Politics
Book SynopsisEach of the book's five chapters evokes a colonial Mexican cultural and intellectual sphere: the library, anatomy and medicine, spirituality, classical learning, and publishing and printing. Using an array of literary texts and historical documents and alongside secondary historical and critical materials, the author Stephanie Kirk demonstrates how Sor Juana used her poetry and other works to inscribe herself within the discourses associated with these cultural institutions and discursive spheres and thus challenge the male exclusivity of their precepts and precincts. Kirk illustrates how Sor Juana subverted the masculine character of erudition, writing herself into an all-male community of scholars. From there, Sor Juana clearly questions the gender politics at play in her exclusion, and undermines what seems to be the inextricable link previously forged between masculinity and institutional knowledge. Taylor & Francis Ltd Chinese Constitutionalism in a Global Context
Book SynopsisOver the course of the last four decades as China's ideological realm has been transformed, it has become significantly more complicated. This is well illustrated in the current discourse concerning China's constitutional future. Among Chinese intellectuals the liberal constitutionalism paradigm is widely accepted. However, more recently, this perspective has been challenged by mainland New Confucians and Sinicized Marxists alike. The former advocate a constitutionalism that is based upon and loyal to the Confucian tradition; while the latter has sought to theorize the current Chinese constitutional order and reclaim its legitimacy. This book presents a discussion of these three approaches, analyzing their respective strengths and weaknesses, and looking to the likely outcome. The study provides a clear picture of the current ideological debates in China, while developing a platform for the three schools and their respective constituencies to engage in dialogue, pluralize the concepTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd Neoliberalism Personhood and Postsocialism
Book SynopsisDespite a growing literature debating the consequences of neo-liberal political and economic policy in the former Eastern bloc, the idea of neo-liberal personhood has so far received limited attention from scholars of the region. Presenting a range of ethnographic studies, this book lays the groundwork for a new disciplinary agenda by critically examining novel technologies of self-government which have appeared in the wake of political and economic liberalization. Neoliberalism, Personhood, and Postsocialism explores the formation of subjectivities in newly marketized or marketizing societies across the former Eastern Bloc, documenting the rise of the neo-liberal discourse of the 'enterprising' self in government policy, corporate management and education, as well as examining the shifts in forms of capital amongst marginal capitalists and entrepreneurs working in the grey zone between the formal and informal economies. A rich investigation of the tools of neo-liberal governance andTrade Review’This timely volume builds on current debates regarding post-socialism and neoliberalism and, offering detailed ethnographic observation, makes a convincing case for the value of nuanced, empirically grounded approaches to neoliberalism and some of its key concepts. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Ashgate Research Companion to Black Sociology
Book SynopsisThe Ashgate Research Companion to Black Sociology provides the most up to date exploration and analysis of research focused on Blacks in America. Beginning with an examination of the project of Black Sociology, it offers studies of recent events, including the Stand Your Ground' killing of Trayvon Martin, the impact of Hurricane Katrina on emerging adults, and efforts to change voting requirements that overwhelmingly affect Blacks, whilst engaging with questions of sexuality and family life, incarceration, health, educational outcomes and racial wage disparities.Inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois's charge of engaging in objective research that has a positive impact on society, and organised around the themes of Social Inequities, Blacks and Education, Blacks and Health and Future Directions, this timely volume brings together the latest interdisciplinary research to offer a broad overview of the issues currently faced by Blacks in United States.A timely, significant resTrade ReviewAs we deepen into the 21st century, there is abundant evidence that Black Sociology is the original American sociology, despite the dominant narratives of the discipline. The contents of Wright II and Wallace’s Ashgate Research Companion to Black Sociology show that not only has Black Sociology continued since its late 19th century beginnings, but, that it is thriving and continuously pushing a rigorous and impactful sociology across every substantive area of the discipline.’ David L. Cambridge University Press African Economies and the Politics of Permanent Crisis 19791999
Book SynopsisThis 2001 book explains why African countries have remained mired in a disastrous economic crisis since the late 1970s. It shows that dynamics internal to African state structures largely explain this failure to overcome economic difficulties rather than external pressures on these same structures as is often argued.Trade Review'This landmark work presents a searching and persuasive political explanation of Africa's failure to achieve development despite two decades of externally imposed economic reform … A major contribution to our understanding of Africa's political economy.' Foreign Affairs'This is economics by someone who understands African politics. No Africanists can afford not to read it.' Commonwealth & Comparative Politics'A well-written book is usually a persuasive book, and this book is well written. Its reasoning is more than persuasive, however: it is compelling in its gloomy conclusions, in which the failure of economic reform seems inescapable. … Van der Walle's book is probably the best among a spate of literature that explains the African economic predicament in terms of the patrimonial nature of politics.' The Journal of Development Studies'The book is a must-read for all those interested in understanding the African situation and how progress might be achieved in the future. … this is an excellent study.' Development in PracticeTable of ContentsIntroduction; 1. Approaches to Africa's permanent crisis; 2. Patterns in economic reform implementation, 1979–99; 3. Decision making in post-colonial Africa; 4. Understanding state responses to the crisis; 5. The crisis and foreign aid; 6. Democratization and the prospects for change; 7. Conclusion.
