Penguin Putnam Inc The Bodies in Person
Book SynopsisSince the beginning of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, uncounted thousands of civilians have died in the fighting and as a result of the destruction. These are deaths for which no one assumes responsibility and which have been presented, historically, as fallout. No one knows their true number. In The Bodies in Person, Nick McDonell introduces us to some of the civilians who died, along with the rescue workers who tried to save them, U.S. soldiers grappling with their deaths, and everyone in between. He shows us how decent Americans, inside and outside the government and military, looked away from the mounting death toll, even as they claimed to do everything in their power to prevent civilian casualties. With a novelist's eye — and hundreds of hours of recorded interviews — McDonell brings us the untold story of the innocent dead in America's ongoing wars, from leveled cities to drone operation centers to Capitol back rooms. As we follow him around the world, The Bodies in Person raises questions not only about what it means to be an American, but about the value of a life, what it means to risk one, and what is owed afterward.

University of Exeter Press Cornish Studies Volume 10 Cornish Studies Ten
Book SynopsisThe tenth volume in the acclaimed paperback series . . . the only county series that can legitimately claim to represent the past and present of a nation.Trade Review 'Congratulations are due to Professor Philip Payton, the Institute of Cornish Studies and University of Exeter Press on this, the tenth volume in the series Cornish Studies. Its publication marks an important milestone in the development of Cornish Studies as an area of academic activity. Over the last decade or so we have seen the emergence of an energetic 'new' Cornish Studies, which has sought to engage with major scholarly debates such as those surrounding 'Britishness', 'Celticity', identity, gender, the politics of the periphery, language revival, and ethnicity and emigration. Often courageous and always innovative, these new interdisciplinary and comparative approaches to studying Cornwall and the Cornish have allowed Cornish Studies to escape the narrow confines of 'English local history' to embrace what have been termed the 'new Cornish historiography' and the 'new Cornish social science'. Nowhere has this been more evident than within the pages of Cornish Studies itself, the series becoming a showcase for the latest and best Cornish work as well as placing consideration of Cornwall and the Cornish very firmly within the wider context of the 'Atlantic Archipelago'. (Professor Máiréad Nic Craith, Academy for Irish Cultural Heritages, University of Ulster) 'The outcome and intention has been to place Cornwall squarely in new debates about the nature of 'Britishness' and the territorial identities' (Western Morning News) '. . . essential reading for any ‘student of Cornwall’' (Cornish Studies Six Cornish Forefathers Society, April 1999) ‘Its tenth anniversary edition, now out from the University of Exeter Press, essentially seeks to define where “New Cornish Studies” has travelled over the past decade and where it ought to be travelling in the decade to come.’ (Cornish Studies Ten, Western Morning News, February 2003) ‘The outcome and intention has been to place Cornwall squarely in new debates about the nature of “Britishness” and the territorial identities’ (Cornish Studies Ten, Western Morning News, February 2003) Table of Contents1. Georgetown University Press The Government Taketh Away The Politics of Pain
Book SynopsisDemocratic government is about making choices. Sometimes those choices involve the distribution of benefits. This work examines the repercussions of unpopular government decisions in Canada and the USA, the two great democratic nations of North America.Trade ReviewA remarkable volume . . . First, the contributions contained within it are uniformly admirable as scholarship without being cursed with the obscurantist and obsequious lingo that too often renders such tomes either impenetrable or unappealing to the attentive and intelligent public. Second, they provide genuinely informative and compelling explanations of why public policy works (or doesn't work) the way it does. Finally, by giving sufficient detail about selected policy areas to make them intelligible, and then by adding informed reflections and cogent conclusions, they provide citizens, public officials and politicians with the intellectual tools necessary to comprehend problems that may be only apparently insoluble. * The Innovation Journal *Table of ContentsPreface 1. Taylor & Francis The Cultural Politics of Emotion
Book SynopsisPraise for the first editionAhmed's work contributes to cultural studies and rhetorical theory by elaborating a process through which we can approach everyday emotional practices as rich and complex sites interwoven in struggles for social change.--Rachel C. Riedner, JAC What do emotions do? How do emotions move us or get us stuck? In developing a theory of the cultural politics of emotion, Sara Ahmed focuses on the relationship between emotions, language, and bodies. She shows how emotions are named in speech acts, as well as how they involve sensations that can be felt not only emotionally, but physically. A new methodology for reading 'the emotionality of texts' is offered as are analyses of the role of emotions in debates on international terrorism, asylum and migration, and reconciliation and reparation. Attending to the intersections between race, gender, and sexuality, The Cultural Politics of Emotion is in dialogue with key trends in

Beautifully written, it’s a must-read for Ravens fans! We all know the outcome and I still couldn't wait to read the next chapter. You'll have to read it to prove that it really happened! It's a virtual play-by-play re-enactment. But, more than that, it's about the long love affair that's consumed so many in Baltimore, which commenced with a team called the Colts and continues, strong as ever, with the beloved Ravens." --Michael Olesker, author of The Colts' Baltimore: A City and Its Love Affair in the Fifties "Never Easy, Never Pretty reaffirms why loving a sports team like the Ravens is so important. NIAS Press States and Societies in Motion: Essays in Honour
Book SynopsisWith contributions from leading scholars in their field, this collection of fourteen essays offers wide-ranging but incisive perspectives on East and Southeast Asian Studies. Apart from informing and enlightening the reader, the essays offer a tribute to Professor Takashi Shiraishi, the renowned Japanese scholar, for his many contributions across continents and disciplines as well as his personal qualities as a long-time colleague, teacher and friend. Now Professor Emeritus of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS) in Tokyo, Shiraishi-sensei has had an outstanding career as a teacher, scholar, administrator and policy advisor, his many roles including Deputy Director of the Southeast Asia Program at Cornell University and president both of GRIPS and the Institute of Developing Economies, Japan. Often with Japan at their nexus, the essays speak to three enduring themes in the research interests that spanned Shiraishi's half-century career, namely, political movements in Southeast Asia; national and regional politics in China and Japan; and the links between ideology, networks and policies at critical junctures of state formation. An introduction by the editors reviews Shiraishi's contributions to many areas of scholarship (these are documented in the back matter, in a bibliography of his publications and writings in English and Japanese). Among authors of the fourteen essays that follow are Patricio Abinales, Chris Baker, Caroline Hau, Peter Katzenstein, Pasuk Phongpaichit and Thongchai Winichakul. In a concluding lengthy interview Shiraishi speaks for the first time, in a frank if light-hearted tone, of his diverse experiences in academia, as student, faculty and administrator, his thoughts on area studies and their connections with official policy-making, and his initiatives for building regional networks of research and intellectual exchange. A festschrift in English being a rarity for a Japanese scholar, this collection offers valuable if indirect insights into the links and influences that have animated a burgeoning community of international academic exchange and expert cooperation. This has been facilitated by Shiraishi's position, time and again (even if an accidental one, as he likes to say), as a transnational intersection point for colleagues, students and friends in their many various research pursuits. A rich and rewarding collection.
