Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht GmbH & Co KG Integrating Imperial Space: The Russian Customs
Book SynopsisIn the second half of the 19th century visions of an infrastructurally integrated imperial space captivated the minds of Russian administrators and businessmen. Infrastructural integration promised to unravel the economic and political potential of the Russian Empire but it also revealed its administrative weakness. The book explores the challenges the Tsarist administration faced in harmonizing the multitudinous regional economic regimes in its vast landed empire. It analyzes conflicting logics towards the imperial space and demonstrates how the modern project of an infrastructurally integrated space limited the leeway in resorting to imperial administrative practices and accelerated the nationalization of the Russian Empires economic space.

Campus Verlag Traces of Modernism – Art and Politics from the
Book SynopsisTraces of Modernism surveys the competing social and political visions that marked the transition from the nineteenth century to the twentieth, and the complex relationships and connections between these visions. A host of international contributors consider an extensive range of philosophical and artistic ideologies—from Bauhaus and Italian futurism to plans for totalitarian state-building—that bloomed in the wake of the World War One and the ensuing worldwide revolutions. These ideologies developed amid the uneasy backdrop of new kinds of international cooperation that were periodically punctuated by sharp bursts of fervid nationalism. At the center of each essay in Traces of Modernism stands the image of the machine, a metaphor for technological innovation and new systems of order that stood unfortunately ready for corruption by forces of authoritarianism.

The essays collected in this volume are dedicated to the historian and Latin Americanist Friedrich Katz (1927-2010). They are based on a symposium held in his honour in Vienna in the autumn of 2011 and bring together varying perspectives of his life and work. As one of the great social historians of our time, Friedrich Katz had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the sources relevant to Latin America’s twentieth century history. His studies of the Mexican Revolution rank foremost among contributions to the field. More than anyone before he succeeded in relating the specifics of Mexico’s history to the broader processes of global history. That same global history impacted repeatedly on Katz’ own life: he was forced to leave Vienna as a child and moved with his family to Mexico, via Berlin, Paris and New York; he returned to Vienna after 1945 only to leave again for East Berlin before finally settling in Chicago.Table of ContentsInhalt/Contents: Javier Garciadiego: Friedrich Katz: Vielseitiger Historiker und Wahlmexikaner/Versatile historian and Mexican by adoption – Martina Kaller: Friedrich Katz an der Universität Wien. Peter Lang AG Deutschsprachige Zionismen: Verfechter, Kritiker

Peter Lang AG On the Balkan Stage Romanian Diplomacy during
Book SynopsisWho were Romania's diplomatic representatives in the Balkans during the Second World War? How did they select and forward information? What personal mark did they add to negotiations and diplomatic notes? What was the relationship between the career diplomats and the political authorities in Romania in the context of a dictatorial regime in Bucharest? These are just some of the questions the book aims at providing answers to. Moreover, this questionnaire applied to the Balkans does not only elicit answers that reflect developments and processes in the area. It allows reflections on the broader decision-making architecture, on the entire Romanian foreign policy of that period and on the functioning mechanisms of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in relation to the rigours of a totalitarian state.

Book SynopsisIgor Torbakov explores the nexus between various forms of Russian political imagination and the apparently cyclic process of decline and fall of Russias imperial polity over the last hundred years. While Russias historical process is by no means unique, two features of its historical development stand out. First, the countrys history is characterized by dramatic political discontinuity. In the past century, Russia changed its historical skin three times: following the disintegration of the Tsarist Empire accompanied by violent civil war, it was reconstituted as the communist USSR, whose breakup a quarter century ago led to the emergence of the present-day Russian Federation. Each of the dramatic transformations in the 20th century powerfully affected the notion of what Russia is and what it means to be Russian. Second, alongside Russias political instability, there is, paradoxically, a striking picture of geopolitical stability and of remarkable longevity as an imperial entity. At least since the beginning of the 18th century, Russia has been a permanent geopolitical fixture on Europes north-eastern margins with its persistent pretense to the status of a great power. Against this backdrop, the books three sections investigate (a) the emergence and development of Eurasianism as a form of (post-)imperial ideology, (b) the crucial role Ukraine has historically played for the Russians self-understanding, and (c) the contemporary Russian elites exercises in historical legitimation.

Book Synopsis"Featuring a special section on Russian Foreign Policy Towards the 'Near Abroad' Issue 4,2 deals with Russias post-Maidan foreign policy towards the so-called near abroad, or the former Soviet states. This is an important and timely topic, as Russias policy perspectives have changed dramatically since 2013/2014, as have those of its neighbors. The Kremlin today is paradoxically following an aggressive realist agenda that seeks to clearly delineate its sphere of influence in Europe and Eurasia while simultaneously attempting to promote soft-power and a historical-civilizational justification for its recent actions in Ukraine (and elsewhere). The result is an often perplexing amalgam of policy positions that are difficult to disentangle. The contributors to this special issue are all regional specialists based either in Europe or the United States. "

Book SynopsisCzechoslovakia played an important role within the Soviet bloc, yet its history remains under-researched. This monograph blends historical analysis of the superpowers foreign policies with an assessment of their impact on Czechoslovakia and its position within the Soviet bloc. The book thereby places Czechoslovakia on the map of Cold War history, i.e. the era of mutually assured destruction that lasted almost half a century. It provides a lucid introduction to some milestones in international Cold War history in their relation to Czecho-Slovak history. The books novel contribution is to explain Czechoslovakias domestic situation during the Cold War from the outside. Drawing on extensive source materials of Slovak, Czech, American, and Russian provenance, it provides a more comprehensive understanding of post-war Czecho-Slovak history while also contributing to general knowledge about the nature and impact of the Cold War.

Book SynopsisThe contributors to this collection explore the multidimensional transformation of independent Ukraine and deal with her politics, society, private sector, identity, arts, religions, media, and democracy. Each chapter reflects the up-to-date research in its sub-discipline, is styled for use in seminars, and includes a bibliography as well as a recommended reading list. These studies illustrate the deep changes, yet, at the same time, staggering continuity in Ukraines post-Soviet development as well as various counter-reactions to it. All nine chapters are jointly written by two co-authors, one Ukrainian and one Western, who respond here to recent needs in international higher education. The volumes contributors include, apart from the editors: Margarita M. Balmaceda (Seton Hall University), Oksana Barshynova (Ukrainian National Arts Museum), Tymofii Brik (Kyiv School of Economics), José Casanova (Georgetown University), Diana Dutsyk (Kyiv-Mohyla Academy), Marta Dyczok (University of Western Ontario), Hennadii Korzhov (Kyiv Polytechnic Institute), Serhiy Kudelia (Baylor University), Pavlo Kutuev (Kyiv Polytechnic Institute), Olena Martynyuk (Columbia University), Oksana Mikheieva (Ukrainian Catholic University), Tymofii Mylovanov (University of Pittsburgh), Andrian Prokip (Ukrainian Institute for the Future), Oxana Shevel (Tufts University), Ilona Sologoub (Kyiv School of Economics), Maksym Yenin (Kyiv Polytechnic Institute), and Yuliya Yurchenko (University of Greenwich).Trade Review"This is a superb overview of the most important issues facing today's Ukraine, and of the history that underlies them. It skillfully charts Ukraine's journey from a Soviet republic to a truly independent electoral democracy. More importantly, it explains the attitudesbehind the crucial question of Ukrainian identity, a complexand evolving set of issues that played a central role in Ukraine's rebellion against Russian domination and its rejection of ethnic nationalism in favor of multi-ethnic citizenship. This impressive volume reminds us of the difficult path that Ukraine continues to follow to meet the aspirations of its people, and of the true importance to all of us of Ukraine's future success in solidifying its sovereignty, democracy and independence. Book SynopsisPeter Romanovsky (1892-1964) was Soviet chess champion in 1923 (outright) and 1927 (jointly with Bogatyrchuk). According to Chessmetrics he was ranked 12th in the world in 1925. Romanovsky was also one of Soviet chess's greatest teachers, standing at the very foundation of the Soviet Chess School. His pupils included Averbakh, Zak, Alatortsev, Lisitsin and many others, and he provided much guidance to Botvinnik in his early career. Author of 16 books, Romanovsky stood for active, fighting and objective chess where the requirements of the position took precedence over positional rules of thumb. The first half of this book comprises a detailed biography written by chess historian and world chess composition champion Sergei Tkachenko. Tkachenko tells the incredible story of a man who spent nearly a year as a captive in Germany at the start of WWI after participating in the Mannheim chess events of 1914, endured the hardships of Civil War and NEP Russia, won two Soviet championships and lived through the horrors of the Siege of Leningrad in 1941-42, suffering unspeakable family tragedy as he did so. Romanovsky narrowly escaped an early death on three separate occasions. The second half of this book comprises Romanovsky's own chess autobiography first published in 1954 in Russian, including 72 of his best games. His instructive annotations have been updated with computer analysis by IM Grigory Bogdanovich, an accomplished historian who published a biography of Bogoljubov in 2020. Because Romanovsky wrote this book after his career was over, its annotations are considerably more honest than those found in books that collate the annotations of great players made while their career was in full swing. Indeed, in several games Romanovsky comments how his views of certain positions changed over the years as he accumulated greater knowledge and experience. This book is also a textbook on attacking and positional play. Most games are classified by themes, including Attack on the Castled and Non-Castled King, Counterattack, Attack on the Center, and Queenside Attack. Moreover, it contains discussions on central control, the bishop pair advantage, pawn storms, simplification strategy, exchange sacrifices, king safety, and other key topics. His opponents include Alekhine, Botvinnik, Bogoljubov, Averbakh, Flohr, Levenfish, Kotov, and many other stars.

Book SynopsisOur short life together was fun, fascinating and happy. I accompanied my husband to chess tournaments. We traveled a lot, saw a lot, met the most interesting people. Meeting Alekhine, Euwe, Flohr, Capablanca, Keres was unforgettable. We became friends with many of them. Now, when I turn the pages of my life and remember my family, which was obliterated so ruthlessly, the old wounds open again and start bleeding. This book tells the story of one of the most enigmatic and tragic figures in chess history the Latvian grandmaster Vladimirs Petrovs (1908 1943). His name was struck out of chess literature for decades. His games and biography are largely unknown to the public even though Petrovs defeated Alekhine, Fine, Reshevsky, Boleslavsky and many other great players of the past, gained prizes at supertournaments including joint first at the famous Kemeri 1937 tournament, and performed strongly for Latvia at chess Olympiads. According to the Chessmetrics website, Petrovs was ranked no. 14 in the world in November 1938, and his performance at Kemeri 1937 was 2709. He had a 2.5-2.5 lifetime score against Alekhine. In the first part of this book, grandmaster and chess historian Dmitry Kryakvin instructively analyzes Petrovs' career through 52 games and fragments. As well as the above players, opponents include Smyslov, Euwe, Bogoljubov, Keres, Stahlberg, Flohr, Spielmann, and many other global stars of pre-war chess. In the second part, Petrovs' widow Galina Petrova-Matisa recounts the tragic fate of her husband and family members and her search for the truth of what happened to Petrovs. She further provides biographical details of their short, blissful family life for four-and-a-half years, including unforgettable meetings with the world's strongest chess players and their families. The work contains a large number of rare family and tournament photos.

Central European University Press Rural Unrest During the First Russian Revolution:
Book SynopsisThis narrative of peasant unrest in Russia during 1905 - 1906 combines a chronology of incidents drawn from official documents, with close analysis of the villages associated with the disorders based upon detailed census materials compiled by local specialists. The analysis concentrates on a single province: Kursk Oblast, bordering the now independent Ukraine. In place of the general surveys of the revolution that dominate the literature, Miller focuses on local events and the rural populations that participated in them. The volume documents the degree to which the peasant community had been pushed onto the path of change by the end of the nineteenth century, how much the "peasantry" itself had become increasingly heterogeneous in outlook and occupation, and the rapidity with which these processes had begun to corrode the legitimacy of the older order. The author matches sites of unrest with materials relating to their socio-economic character, which constitutes to a unique methodological innovation. Miller concludes that unrest was concentrated mostly among peasant communities for whom the benefits of the vital interactions between social unequals that had maintained a fragile social peace in the countryside had been radically eroded; he furthermore identifies the prominent role played by that spectrum of persons that retained their ties to their villages, but stood on the margins of rural life.Trade Review"This meticulous and detailed microhistory of peasant unrest in one southern province of late imperial Russia during the Russian Revolution of 1905 is a good example of the post-Cold War collaboration between the last generation of Soviet historians and American experts in Russian/Soviet history. As a graduate student of Leopold Henri Haimson, Burton Richard Miller began his archival research for this book in the Soviet Union as early as 1988–1989. Miller's research in Moscow was supervised by Ivan D. Koval'chenko and Leonid I. Borodkin. Haimson and his Soviet colleagues exposed Miller to the intellectual influences that would shape his doctoral dissertation (1992) as well as this book, which has grown out of that earlier research. Miller selected Kursk province as the most typical agricultural region of the Russian empire because it 'provided a good sample of incidents of agrarian revolt'. Using various statistical approaches, he emphasizes his theoretical preferences, explaining how Kursk province presented him “that setting in which the traditional agricultural orientations of peasant life, communal organization in closed villages and a high degree of cultural insularity could be expected to produce a context in which the ‘little community’ model and conceptions associated with the ‘moral economy’ frame of analysis" * American Historical Review *"The first attempt since Robert Edelman’s 1987 Proletarian Peasants to examine the 1905 Revolution in the countryside. Set within the central agricultural region of Kursk province, it joins other studies that provide an important regional dimension to the study of agrarian protests in the broader revolutionary period of the early twentieth century and those that focus on provincial distinctions within imperial Russia. Clearly a labor of love. Using official state documents from the State Historical Archive of the Kursk Region, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Ministry of Justice, many of which appear to be abstracts of police reports, as well as published statistical materials, Miller reconstructs the diverse economic situation of a heterogeneous peasantry on the eve of the 1905 Revolution, the frequency and ebbs and flows of revolutionary activity in 1905 and 1906, the changing nature of the collective actions, and regional variations in the disturbances within the province". * Slavic Review *Table of ContentsPreface and acknowledgments Introduction Kursk Province on the Eve of the Revolution 1905 in the Rural Districts of Kursk Province Rural Disorders in Spring-Summer, 1906 Typology, Chronology and Geographical Distributions of Rural Disorders, 1905-1906 The Villages That Revolt Conclusions Appendix A: Correlation tables to Chapter V Appendix B: Village listing Bibliography

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Maria Lekapene, Empress of the Bulgarians:
Book SynopsisThe book presents the biography of Maria, daughter of Christopher Lekapenos (the eldest son of emperor Romanos I). For about 35 years, she was the tsaritsa of the Bulgarians at the side of her husband, Tsar Peter (927-969). Her character is but dimly visible in the sources; interestingly, the few sources that do mention her are almost exclusively of Byzantine provenance. Most scholars who have dealt with her life—usually as a side note to studies on Peter’s reign—saw in her a representative of the interests of Constantinople and a propagator of Byzantine culture. Some have gone so far as to call her a Byzantine agent at the Bulgarian court. In this book, the first monograph on Maria ever to have been written, Mirosław J. Leszka and Zofia A. Brzozowska construct a balanced narrative of the tsaritsa’s life and her role in tenth-century Bulgaria through meticulous analysis of primary sources, putting aside biases. The publication is supplemented by a translation of the fragments of the Hellenic and Roman Chronicle of the second redaction devoted to Maria and Peter.Trade ReviewZofia A. Brzozowska and Mirosław J. Leszka treat the protagonist of their book with undeniable sympathy (as signaled already in the title). Following the footprints of Maria Lekapene, the authors paint a vivid picture of Byzantium in the first half of the tenth century, as well as present the history of its neighbor – the Bulgarian state; for it is there that the grand political game of the Constantinople court ‘cast’ Maria, daughter of Romanos Lekapenos. The biography of Maria Lekapene is an eagerly awaited publication in the international Byzantinological and Slavicist community; I predict that it will be a scholarly success. -- Ireneusz Milewski, University of Gdańsk

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo The Bulgarian State in 927–969: The Epoch of Tsar
Book SynopsisTsar Peter (927–969), this book’s protagonist, is all too frequently presented in modern scholarship as a weak ruler, devoid of any grander political aspirations, and focused on religious matters—pious, but neglecting the vital interests of his subjects. It was said that during his reign both his court and state became Byzantinized, that central authority was completely helpless in the face of Hungarian raids, and saw the spread of the Bogomilist heresy. According to the Tsar’s critics, it was as a result of his ineffectual rule that Boris II, his son and successor, was unable to defend Bulgaria’s sovereignty in 971.This book—the first monograph devoted to Peter—was written by Bulgarian (Miliana Kaymakamova, Georgi N. Nikolov, Angel Nikolov, and Nikolay Hrissimov) and Polish medievalists (Zofia A. Brzozowska, Mirosław J. Leszka, Kirił Marinow, and Jan M. Wolski). Thanks to a thorough analysis of the sources and an in-depth knowledge of the literature of the subject, they have constructed a comprehensive and balanced image of the reign of their protagonist and the role he played in the history of medieval Bulgaria.Trade ReviewWe are dealing here with a monograph that is exceptional not only in Polish, but also international historiography. Its authors, known for their numerous papers on the history of Byzantium and Bulgaria and other works, undertook the task of creating a synthesis, the world’s first comprehensive study devoted to the Bulgarian Tsar Peter and his times. The authors convincingly present the political achievements of the monarch and his contributions to the development of early medieval Bulgarian culture, and they accurately recreate the image of the Bulgarian society which, during Peter’s times, benefited from the fruits of the second peace. Due to its original theme, the monograph may meet with a lively interest of readers both in Poland and abroad. -- Jarosław Dudek, University of Zielona Góra

Uniwersytet Jagiellonski, Wydawnictwo Muhammad and the Origin of Islam in the Byzantine-Slavic Literary Context: A Bibliographical History
Book SynopsisThe presented publication is a type of bibliographic dictionary, compiled by an interdisciplinary team of authors (Byzantynists and Paleoslavists), containing an overview of medieval texts referring to the person of Muhammad, the Arabs, and the circumstances of the birth of Islam, which were known in the Slavia Orthodoxa area (especially in its eastern part, i.e. in Rus'). Therefore, it presents the works written in the Church Slavic language between the 9th and the mid-16th centuries. As the Old Rus' discourse on Islam was shaped under the overwhelming influence of Byzantine literature, the majority of the presented sources are Byzantine texts from the 6th–14th centuries, translated into the literary language of the Orthodox Slavs. The reader will also find here a discussion on several relics, originally created in other languages of the Christian East (Syriac, Arabic) and the West (Latin), which – through the Greek – were assimilated on the Slavic ground. This book aims to fill a gap in previous studies on inter-religious polemics in the Middle Ages, which has usually focused on Christian-Muslim cultural relations, analyzing Greek and Latin texts or the works written in one of the Middle Eastern languages, almost completely ignoring the Church Slavic heritage. It is worth noting that a number of the texts presented here (as well as Slavic translations of Byzantine sources) have not been published so far. The information on them, provided in this monograph, is therefore the result of research conducted directly on the manuscript material.
