  • Crisis and Ontological Insecurity: Serbia’s

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Crisis and Ontological Insecurity: Serbia’s

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book develops a novel way of thinking about crises in world politics. By building on ontological security theory, this work conceptualises critical situations as radical disjunctions that challenge the ability of collective agents to ‘go on’. These ontological crises bring into the realm of discursive consciousness four fundamental questions related to existence, finitude, relations and autobiography. In times of crisis, collective agents such as states are particularly attached to their ontic spaces, or spatial extensions of the self that cause collective identities to appear more firm and continuous. These theoretical arguments are illustrated in a case study looking at Serbia’s anxiety over the secession of Kosovo. The author argues that Serbia’s seemingly irrational and self-harming policy vis-à-vis Kosovo can be understood as a form of ontological self-help. It is a rational pursuit of biographical continuity and a healthy sense of self in the face of an ontological crisis triggered by the secession of a province that has been constructed as the ontic space of the Serbian nation since the late 19th century. Trade Review“This book is essential reading for social scientists with a particular interest in Kosovo and Southeastern Europe, as well as for political scientists in international relations. It is also crucial for policy-makers … . Ejdus presents valuable insights into the Serbian politics of avoidance … . It is to be hoped that the book will also inspire international policy-makers to reflect more consciously upon their own politics of avoidance when it comes to the status of Kosovo.” (Pieter Troch, Comparative Southeast European Studies, Vol. 69 (2-3), 2021)Table of Contents1. • Insanity and Immigration Control in New Zealand and Australia, 1860–1930

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Insanity and Immigration Control in New Zealand and Australia, 1860–1930

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the policy and practice of the insanity clauses within the immigration controls of New Zealand and the Commonwealth of Australia. It reveals those charged with operating the legislation to be non-psychiatric gatekeepers who struggled to match its intent. Regardless of the evolution in language and the location at which a migrant’s mental suitability was assessed, those with ‘inherent mental defects’ and ‘transient insanity’ gained access to these regions. This book accounts for the increased attempts to medicalise border control in response to the widening scope of terminology used for mental illnesses, disabilities and dysfunctions. Such attempts co-existed with the promotion of these regions as ‘invalids’ paradises’ by governments, shipping companies, and non-asylum doctors. Using a bureaucratic lens, this book exposes these paradoxes, and the failings within these nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Australasian nation-state building exercises.Trade Review“This book adds considerable depth to other histories examining what was a defining era in the creation of Australia’s and NZ’s immigration restrictions. … Kain’s forensic analysis of the ways in which ideas, ideology, ethics, policy and practice intersected in this period is a critical contribution to the history of immigration in both countries, and a welcome addition to the public conversation today on issues of mental health, tolerance towards immigrants and refugees, and the trauma of seeking asylum … .” (Ruth Balint, The Journal of New Zealand Studies, JNZS, Issue 32, June, 2021)“The contemporary politics of border control make this a timely work—and in the year of COVID-19 perhaps even more so. This is a valuable study of a little-known administrative practice, a subject that deserves attention alongside more familiar histories of racially based immigration histories.” (Mark Finnane, Health and History, Vol. 22 (2), 2020)“Strength of Kain’s book is its ability to bring out paradoxes and contradictions in colonial immigration policy and practice. … this is a good and accessible history of Australasian colonial border control generally, as well as a major contribution to our understanding of the history of psychiatry and mental health in the Anglosphere.” (Philippa Martyr, Reviews in History, February 21, 2020)Table of Contents1 Introduction.- 2 Populating Australasia with Sound Minds.- Part I: New Zealand.- 3 Nation-Building, Agent Generals and Imported Lunatics, New Zealand, 1870 to 1879.- 4 Imbecile Passengers and Commercial Paradoxes, New Zealand, 1880 to 1898.- 5 Deportation, Domicile and Mental Deficiency, New Zealand, 1899 to 1930.- Part II: The Commonwealth of Australia.- 6. • The Italian War on the Eastern Front, 1941–1943: Operations, Myths and Memories

Springer Nature Switzerland AG The Italian War on the Eastern Front, 1941–1943: Operations, Myths and Memories

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Italian Army’s participation in Hitler’s war against the Soviet Union has remained unrecognized and understudied. Bastian Matteo Scianna offers a wide-ranging, in-depth corrective. Mining Italian, German and Russian sources, he examines the history of the Italian campaign in the East between 1941 and 1943, as well as how the campaign was remembered and memorialized in the domestic and international arena during the Cold War. Linking operational military history with memory studies, this book revises our understanding of the Italian Army in the Second World War.Trade Review“Bastian Matteo Scianna’s book is a welcoming addition … . The author’s mission throughout his volume is clear … . The Italian War on the Eastern Front, 1941-1943, Operations, Myths and Memories is a mandatory book that should be on the shelves of those who want to nuance the history of not only the Eastern Front, but the Italian army in the Second World War, going beyond the prejudices of the Operetta Army trope.” (Emanuele Sica, War in History, Vol. 28 (4), 2021)“... (Richard Germann, in: Connections, 24. Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the contribution made by Joaquim Nabuco (1849-1910) to political thought in Brazil during the Belle Epoque (1888-1910). Nabuco was once leader of the abolitionist cause in Brazil and turned his attention after the abolition of slavery in 1888 to saving the monarchy. This study traces Nabuco's views on the monarchic institution in Brazil, considering first the origins of his (liberal) monarchist beliefs and his ideas on how the institution should adapt to halt the threat of republicanism before 1889. It concentrates on the first decade of the Republic and the ways in which Nabuco presented a challenge to the new regime. By examining the impact of his views on the State's domestic and international roles, the book reveals Nabuco's contribution to nation-building in late-nineteenth-century Brazil.

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat impact did Bolshevist rule have on Emma Goldmans’s perception of the Russian Revolutions of 1917 and why did she change her mind, going from defending the Russian Revolution to becoming a crusader against Bolshevism? The Russian Revolution changed the world and determined the history of the 20th century as the French Revolution had determined the history of the 19th century. Left-wing intellectuals around the world greeted the February Revolution with enthusiasm as their hope for a new world and social order and the end of capitalism seemed close. However, the joy did not last long as the ideals of February 1917 were replaced by the realities of October 1917 and Lenin crushed the revolution during the following Civil War. Emma Goldman, a famous Russian-born American anarchist was one of the intellectuals, whose admiration for the revolution turned into frustration about its corruption. Emma Goldman and the Russian Revolution discusses her evolving perception of the revolution between 1917 and the early 1920s. The analysis of such an intellectual transformation process, provides a case study of intellectual and revolutionary history alike, adding a closer reading to the research about the famous American anarchist, Emma Goldman, her transnational life and her role as a revolutionary intellectual.

Book SynopsisBritish interest in the Arctic has returned to heights not seen since the end of the Cold War; concerns about climate change, resources, trade, and national security are all impacted by profound environmental and geopolitical changes happening in the Arctic. Duncan Depledge investigates the increasing geopolitical significance of the Arctic and explores why it took until now for Britain – once an ‘Arctic state’ itself – to notice how close it is to these changes, what its contemporary interests in the region are, and whether the British government’s response in the arenas of science, defence, and commerce is enough. This book will be of interest to both academics and practitioners seeking to understand contemporary British interest and activity in the Arctic. • Mass Political Culture Under Stalinism: Popular

Springer International Publishing AG Mass Political Culture Under Stalinism: Popular

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is the first full-length study of the Soviet Constitution of 1936, exploring Soviet citizens’ views of constitutional democratic principles and their problematic relationship to the reality of Stalinism. Drawing on archival materials, the book offers an insight into the mass political culture of the mid-1930s in the USSR and thus contributes to wider research on Russian political culture. Popular comments about the constitution show how liberal, democratic and conciliatory discourse co-existed in society with illiberal, confrontational and intolerant views. The study also covers the government’s goals for the constitution’s revision and the national discussion, and its disappointment with the results. Outcomes of the discussion convinced Stalin that society was not sufficiently Sovietized. Stalin's re-evaluation of society's condition is a new element in the historical picture explaining why politics shifted from the relaxation of 1933-36 to the Great Terror, and why repressions expanded from former oppositionists to the officials and finally to the wider population.Table of Contents1. Out of stock

Book SynopsisWhen NATO troops withdrew from Afghanistan in 2021, they abandoned the country to its fate. The USSR did something similar several decades earlier. Between 1979 and 1989, it intervened in Afghanistan with over 600,000 soldiers, but was unable to bring peace to it, which ultimately led to the withdrawal and overthrow of the government at the time. Around 15,000 USSR citizens lost their lives in the longest war in Soviet history. Based on self-conducted biographical interviews, the study examines how former Soviet veterans in Russia today remember the war, what importance they attach to it and how they as a group try to get recognition for their efforts from the Russian government and society.

  • Russland in Zentralasien: Autobiografische Texte

Bohlau Verlag Russland in Zentralasien: Autobiografische Texte

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe study moves in the field of tension between autobiographical and empire research. She asks about the cohesive effect of discourses of imperial self-description. To this end, she examines memoirs, participation and travel reports on the Russian expansion into southern Central Asia after 1860. Their authors worked as military personnel, officials or scientists in the conquest and exploration of the later General Government of Turkestan. The study counters the diversity of the sources with the concept of autobiographical practices. She understands these as tools of a certain self-conception. The analysis shows how Russian actors in Turkestan developed their own forms of autobiographical narration through the varied design of existing narrative styles. For more than 60 years, they closely interwoven their personal heroic stories with the empire. In this way they contributed to the story of his success in Turkestan and contributed to its discursive stabilization.
