It’s also a disturbing history of Silicon Valley that will make you reconsider the ideological foundations of America’s relentless engine of creative destruction.”—Brad Stone, author of The Everything Store and Amazon UnboundSince the days of the dot-com bubble in the late 1990s, no industry has made a greater impact on the world than Silicon Valley. And few individuals have done more to shape Silicon Valley than Peter Thiel. The billionaire venture capitalist and entr

Oneworld Publications Mayday!: A History of Flight through its Martyrs,
Book SynopsisIn a world without aircraft, to believe flight might be possible required a certain kind of character. You had to be starry-eyed, a possessor of practical ingenuity, nerves of steel and a level of sanity that would be best described as deficient. In Mayday!, David Darling tells the stories of the unconventional aviators across history who have been willing to risk all to further their craft. Meet Sophie Blanchard, a balloonist of nervous disposition whom Napoleon charged with organizing balloon displays at all major ceremonies in France. Then there’s the daredevil stuntman Lincoln Beachey, the dogfighter aces of WWI, the man who performed the dance of death – switching planes in mid-air, the real “X-Men” who flew at the edge of space, and the BASE jumpers who want to fly without wings. The cast are eccentric, reckless and extraordinary, and Mayday! is made up of their riveting tales, bizarre contraptions, magnificent achievements and, sometimes, startling folly.Trade Review“A consummate collection of tales of the fearless and the feckless. Darling treats his subject with an authority tempered by the gentle humour that is the mark of a great story-teller.” -- Justin Pollard, author of The Interesting Bits: The History You Might Have Missed‘David Darling has cleverly avoided wheeling out all the old familiar names… a rollicking, rip-roaring tale. 4 stars.’ * Popular Science *“Gripping… dazzling tales of madness and derring do.” -- Brian Clegg, author of Inflight Science“A hugely enjoyable roller-coaster aerial ride in the company of oddballs and heroes, complete with vertiginous frights, dances of death, lonely impulses of delight and acts of mindless masochism in the name of science.” -- Jonathan Glancey, author of Spitfire: The Biography'Intriguing and entertaining'. * Daily Mail *“Impressive.” * Wall Street Journal *“A mix of good old-fashioned silliness and some fine science writing.” * BBC Focus *

Whittles Publishing The Bishop Method: The life and achievements of
Book SynopsisBishop is undoubtedly one of the most widely-known names in the soil mechanics, or geotechnical engineering, community today, alongside the `founding father', Karl Terzaghi. This is mainly due to the method Bishop devised for estimating the stability of soil slopes; it became known as The Bishop Method and immortalised his name. However, Bishop's contributions to the development of soil mechanics were far wider and of greater significance than his slope stability `method'. His colleague, Professor Skempton, makes this very clear in his contribution to the Bishop eulogy published in Geotechnique in 1988. ...It was a great privilege and the best of good luck to be associated for nearly 40 years with one of the finest intellects in our subject ... his work in this field brought about a highly beneficial revolution in soil mechanics... He was loved and respected by his numerous students... Through them and the strict but friendly criticism of his colleagues' work, and his own important contributions, he exerted a unique influence. Bishop began his career in 1943 when the new soil mechanics world was still grappling with the fundamental issue of soil shear strength. Even the great Terzaghi had not sorted this out. Bishop applied himself immediately to this problem and by the mid 1950s had largely solved it. He published his findings in 1960 in a paper co-authored with Lauritz Bjerrum. This established the parameters to be determined by triaxial testing and the two methods of analysis in use today. This was undoubtedly Bishop's most influential paper. In the eyes of many people Bishop did not receive the recognition he deserved during his lifetime, and indeed has not received since. However, The Bishop Method makes it clear just how influential and important Bishop's contributions were to soil mechanics. The book comprises three parts: Part 1 - the story of Bishop's life, emphasising his particular problem-solving skills Part 2 - his contribution to soil mechanics in some detail, of particular interest to anyone with a technical/professional perspective Part 3 - articles by past students and others who knew him which together paint a fascinating picture of the manTrade Review'...A very interesting and wonderfully readable book...If you have even the slightest interest in the history of soil mechanics and the life of one of its best pioneers, this is a book you will delight in reading'. Third Millennium Publishing Cambridge Engineering: The First 150 Years
Book SynopsisCambridge Engineering: The First 150 Years takes the reader on a journey that starts with the genesis of engineering as an academic discipline, leads to the creation of the Department in 1875, and looks forward to its plans for the 150th anniversary in 2025. The history is told through the extraordinary lives of engineering leaders, who fought through the initial derision of other disciplines to take the faculty from a workshop in a wooden hut to stand as the largest department in the University. The narrative comes right up to date with stories from the latest research and its positive impact on the world. Cambridge Engineering concludes with the vision for the future as the Department moves to its new state-of-the-art home at West Cambridge and takes a global lead in redefining the discipline. Richly illustrated with images from past and present, this hardback will appeal not only to alumni, but to anyone, old or young, who is ready to explore how engineering has changed the world and dream how it will drive further revolutions.

Lanasta The Legendary Douglas DC-3: A Pictorial Tribute
Book SynopsisFollowing on from the epoch-making DC-2 technology, the DC-3 is generally considered the greatest single commercial transport plane in history, and certainly the most famous. Indeed, the DC-3 revolutionized air travel to an extent not equaled until the arrival of the jet age. Many of these revolutions related to safety; thanks to the DC-3’s reputation for reliability, air travel insurance finally became available to the general public in 1937. This is the airliner that not only made flying respectable but enabled the emerging aviation industry to end its reliance on mail subsidies and profit from passenger journeys. DC-3 is still flying eight decades after their first debut - this book is a tribute to its brilliant design.Trade Review'... een zeer kleurrijk boek. (...)
