Book SynopsisDas Institut fër Europäische Geschichte Mainz und die Johannes Gutenberg-Universität veranstalteten im akademischen Jahr 2010/2011 im Rahmen des Studienprogramms des gemeinsamen Graduiertenkollegs "Die christlichen Kirchen vor der Herausforderung "Europa" (1890 bis zur Gegenwart)" eine Vorlesungsreihe, die unter dem Titel "Die Kirchen in Europa: Denker und Querdenker". Die Vorträge gingen der Frage nach, wie sich kirchennahe Organisationen und ihre Entscheidungsträger zum Gedanken einer Einigung Europas positionierten und sich dem Prozess der europäischen Integration stellten. Der Fokus der Reihe richtete sich - als Pendant zu der ersten Ringvorlesung, die 2009-2010 stattfand und in einem Band "Die europäische Integration und die Kirchen. Akteure und Rezipienten" dokumentiert wurde - auf Persönlichkeiten und Gruppierungen, die in die Öffentlichkeit hineinwirkten und deren Meinungsbildung mitgestalteten. Der Band versammelt acht Beiträge von Kirchenhistorikern, Historikern und Politikwissenschaftlern. Die Beiträge decken einen langen Zeitraum ab und beleuchten in Fallbeispielen oder ëberblicksartig die Zeit vom ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert bis an die Schwelle der Gegenwart. Trotz eines gewissen Schwerpunkts im deutschsprachigen Raum wird der Blick auch nach Estland und Italien gelenkt. In Betracht kommen Gruppen, wie politische Parteien; Konfessionskirchen, wie z. B. das Luthertum, und Institutionen, wie der Heilige Stuhl. Vorgestellt werden aber auch und vor allem Einzelpersonen und deren Haltung, wobei auch hier das Spektrum sehr weit ist und von der "Prominenz" bis hin zu weniger bekannten "Einzelgängern" reicht.

Whilst some scholars argue that violence is innate to (monotheistic) religion or community building, others claim that violence 'in the name of God' is a reaction to secularization, a form of political violence or a myth that legitimates repression by secular states. Battles over Belief. Catholics and Violence in the 19th Century offers a much-needed historical perspective on this social science literature as it provides the first comprehensive overview of the changing interplay of faith and violence during the period spanning the French Revolution and First World War. Chapters probe violent acts linked to inner-Catholic, Catholic-secular and interreligious conflict, but also demonstrate the importance of rhetoric and symbolics for nurturing and framing violence across the nineteenth century world. Of special interest is the role of agency. Thus, the book reveals the motives for violence but also its legitimation and interpretation. It furthermore shows the intricate ways in which differences over religion collided with secular differences. By demonstrating that religion remained a powerful trigger for violence beyond the French Revolution, Battles over Belief shows that the relationship between religion and violence, both in the nineteenth century and more generally, is more complex than scholars have suggested.

Using the subject of the "Hitler Youth", an originally National Socialist mass organization, Kathrin Kollmeier analyzes the order of the "Volksgemeinschaft" as the fundamental structure of National Socialist society. The paradoxical figure of a comprehensive and at the same time sharply demarcated, ethnic, national and racist "Volksgemeinschaft" provoked a tension between mass integration and purposeful exclusion, which shaped the social reality in the German Reich. Kollmeier combines theoretical interest in the dynamics of this process of order with an empirical micro-study on the disciplinary system of the youth association and thus illustrates the constitutive precision mechanics of National Socialist rule. The disciplinary policy of the "Hitler Youth" shows the prerequisites and consequences of the order procedure of social and political inclusion and exclusion. The establishment of this legal disciplinary system, which contained its own statutes, organs and courts, was closely linked to contemporary legal discourses. Kathrin Kollmeier takes a closer look at three areas: youth law, the National Socialist movement for a fundamental "renewal of the law" and the "concrete orderly thinking", which Carl Schmitt formulated as an example. It combines historical methods with legal theoretical considerations and legal norms and analyzes the micro-techniques of recording, surveillance and punishment as well as individual case studies of youthful deviance.
