Chatelaine.com, 4/12/11"[This book] won't appeal only to people who don't eat animal products...[Moskowitz's] ingredients are fresh, but they're also accessible: veggies, common spices, beans and rice are frequently used here. As an added bonus, the lack of meat and processed meat and dairy alternatives makes most of this book great for chefs on a budget. And most importantly, this food is tasty."

Momentum Press Dietary Supplements
Book SynopsisThis book provides an overview of dietary supplements including their definition, how they are manufactured and regulated, what forms they are sold in, and what the most popular products are. An effort is made to provide relevant information on the background, mechanism of action, and the clinical evidence demonstrating their efficacy or lack thereof. This book is important given the popularity of dietary supplements and the controversies around their sale and use. Negative portrayal of the industry by the media, and unscrupulous companies that make false and misleading claims about their products, fuel the controversy. At the same time, epidemiological data demonstrates that the proper use of dietary supplements could save thousands of lives and billions of dollars in health care costs. This book is an attempt to contribute an objective perspective on the matter.

Momentum Press Weight Management and Obesity
Book SynopsisFive decades ago, the major nutrition-related issues facing the United States were nutrient deficiencies, under consumption of calories, and malnutrition. In 2016, however, the food landscape is drastically different, and today, the United States faces nutrition-related issues more closely associated with over consumption of calories, bigger waistlines, and chronic disease. Overweight and obesity now afflict the majority of U.S. adults and a large percentage of U.S. children. In addition, diet-related chronic diseases that used to be exclusively observed among adults (e.g., cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hypertension) are now being detected in children and adolescents. To lower the risk and/or assist with the management of chronic illnesses, overweight and obese patients are frequently advised to lose weight. Although there are many proposed ""quick fixes"" for weight loss, long-term weight management is a struggle for most patients. As such, nutrition and healthcare clinicians need to understand the etiology of weight gain and the science-based steps necessary for proper and adequate weight management interventions. This textbook comprehensively examines the treatment of overweight and obesity using an individualized approach. Interventions including diet and behavioral modification, pharmacotherapy, surgery, and physical activity are discussed in the context of an overall lifestyle approach to weight management. Characteristics of successful weight management programs are explored, and example menu plans are provided.

Momentum Press Nutrition Throughout the Lifecycle
Book SynopsisFrom birth to old age, there are more than 50 essential nutrients we all require for normal physiological functioning and optimum health. Though everyone requires the same nutrients throughout life, the specific amounts vary depending on age, gender, body composition, health status, and many other environmental and genetic factors. Nutrition Throughout the Lifecycle provides the reader with an overview of the complex relationship between dietary intake and health promotion and offers students and health care practitioners a detailed reference guide to key nutrient requirements, major food sources, and recommended meal patterns that align with evidence-based government guidelines for adequate intake. In so doing, Lifecycle covers the central nutritional issues unique to each major stage of life, including preconception care, pregnancy and fetal development, infancy, early and middle childhood, adolescence, and advanced age. The goal of this book is to summarize the key points and concepts needed to understand the process by which nutrient needs, lifestyle, and environmental considerations affect human health from one stage of life to the next, and how dietary requirements shift with growth, development, and age.

Momentum Press Diet and Disease: Nutrition for Gastrointestinal, Musculoskeletal, Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic, and Kidney Diseases
Book SynopsisCan food really take the place of medicine? While modern medicine certainly has its place and does more than its fair share of good, there is no denying that many of society's most perilous chronic diseases are exacerbated by poor diets. Whereas earlier infectious diseases used to cause the most death, the impact of chronic diseases now far overshadows that of infectious diseases. Diet plays a significant role in the development of a number of types of chronic disease, such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. This title explores the impact of dietary choices on the prevention, management, and treatment of a number of medical conditions and disease states including the gastrointestinal tract, musculoskeletal disorders, rheumatic disease, anemias, hepatobiliary, gallbladder, pancreatic, and kidney diseases. The topics of nutrition and cardiovascular disease, diabetes and metabolic stress, critical illness, cancer and HIV/AIDS are covered in the subsequent title Diet and Disease I.

Rodale Incorporated The New Evolution Diet: What Our Paleolithic Ancestors Can Teach Us about Weight Loss, Fitness, and Aging
Book SynopsisBelieve it or not, our DNA is almost exactly the same as that of our ancestors. While scientific advances in agriculture, medicine, and technology have protected man, to some degree, from dangers such as starvation, illness, and exposure, the fact remains that our cave-dwelling cousins were considerably healthier than we are. Our paleolithic ancestors did not suffer from heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity. In fact, a good deal of what we view as normal aging is a modern condition that is more akin to disease than any natural state of growing older. Our predecessors were incomparably better nourished than we are, and were incredibly physically fit. And certainly none of them ever craved a doughnut, let alone tasted one. In fact, the human preference for sweet tastes and fatty textures was developed in an environment where such treats were rare, and signaled dense, useful energy. This once-helpful adaptation is the downfall of many a dieter today. It's what makes it hard to resist fats and sweets, especially when they are all around us.We are not living as we were built to live. Our genes were forged in an environment where activity was mandatory—you were active or you starved or were eaten. This created strong selective pressure for genes encoding a smart, physically adept individual capable of very high activity levels. Humans are among the most active of species, and we carry energetically expensive brains to boot. Our energy expenditures rank high among all animals. At least they once did. The New Evolution Diet by Arthur De Vany, PhD is a roadmap back to the better health our ancestors once enjoyed. By eliminating modern foods, including carbohydrates, dairy, and all processed foods from our diets, we can undo much of the damage caused by our modern food environment. The plan is based on three simple principles:1. Enjoy the pleasure of food and do not count or restrict calories. Eat three satisfying meals a day filled with non-starchy vegetables, fruits, and high-quality, lean proteins2. Do not starve yourself, but do go hungry episodically, for brief periods, to promote a low fasting blood insulin level and increase metabolic fat-burning. 3. Exercise less, not more, but with more playfulness and intensity. The goal is to create a strong body with a high resting metabolism and a large physiologic capacity to move through life easily—not to burn calories.Trade Review“There's a disconnect between how we were designed to live and the way we are now living. De Vany's plan is all about closing that gap. The New Evolution Diet lays out an approach to food and exercise that feels intuitive.” —The Daily Beast

Rodale Incorporated The Paleo Diet for Athletes: The Ancient Nutritional Formula for Peak Athletic Performance
Book SynopsisPaleo-style diets are all the rage as fitness enthusiasts, including the booming nation of CrossFitters, have adopted high-protein, low-processed-food diets to fuel their exercise. It all began with the publication of the book "The Paleo Diet" by renowned scientist Loren Cordain, PhD, who presented a breakthrough plan for weight loss and disease prevention without dieting or exercising. In 2005, Dr. Cordain joined with endurance coach Joe Friel to write "The Paleo Diet for Athletes". It sold 8,000 copies that first year, but it has sold even better as a backlist title - more than 20,000 units in both 2010 and 2012. Now, the authors offer an updated and revised edition of "The Paleo Diet for Athletes", specifically targeting runners, triathletes, and other serious amateur athletes. Cordain and Friel show that by using the foods our bodies were designed to eat - protein, fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, and even some saturated fats - anyone can achieve total-body fitness and dramatically improve the strength and cardiovascular efficiency. "The Paleo Diet for Athletes" gives specific guidelines for what to eat before, during and after a workout or competition along with simple, tasty recipes packed with power and wholesome ingredients.

Workman Publishing Real Food/Fake Food: Why You Don't Know What
Book Synopsis“Olmsted makes you insanely hungry and steaming mad--a must-read for anyone who cares deeply about the safety of our food and the welfare of our planet.” —Steven Raichlen, author of the Barbecue! Bible series“The world is full of delicious, lovingly crafted foods that embody the terrain, weather, and culture of their origins. Unfortunately, it’s also full of brazen impostors. In this entertaining and important book, Olmsted helps us fall in love with the real stuff and steer clear of the fraudsters.” —Kirk Kardashian, author of Milk Money: Cash, Cows, and the Death of the American Dairy Farm You’ve seen the headlines: Parmesan cheese made from wood pulp. Lobster rolls containing no lobster at all. Extra-virgin olive oil that isn’t. So many fake foods are in our supermarkets, our restaurants, and our kitchen cabinets that it’s hard to know what we’re eating anymore. In Real Food / Fake Food, award-winning journalist Larry Olmsted convinces us why real food matters and empowers consumers to make smarter choices. Olmsted brings readers into the unregulated food industry, revealing the shocking deception that extends from high-end foods like olive oil, wine, and Kobe beef to everyday staples such as coffee, honey, juice, and cheese. It’s a massive bait and switch in which counterfeiting is rampant and in which the consumer ultimately pays the price. But Olmsted does more than show us what foods to avoid. A bona fide gourmand, he travels to the sources of the real stuff to help us recognize what to look for, eat, and savor: genuine Parmigiano-Reggiano from Italy, fresh-caught grouper from Florida, authentic port from Portugal. Real foods that are grown, raised, produced, and prepared with care by masters of their craft. Part cautionary tale, part culinary crusade, Real Food / Fake Food is addictively readable, mouthwateringly enjoyable, and utterly relevant.Trade ReviewNew York Times BestsellerWashington Post BestsellerNational Post Bestseller (Canada) “Olmsted’s well-researched exposé reveals how often what we eat isn’t what it seems. (Parmesan cheese made of wood pulp or fake lobster rolls, anyone?) Eye-opening.” —PEOPLE magazine “Olmsted boldly walks readers through a course in food authenticity that covers olive oil, cheese, Champagne, seafood, steak, coffee, and more. Readers will be inspired by his intensity and clarity, and floored by how far some counterfeiters go to fool consumers and some historic food institutions go to protect their products and their names. Olmsted’s research is impressive, and he lets no stone go unturned. He lets the terrifying facts speak for themselves, adding just a little humor . . . Olmsted’s sharp language will hopefully put fires under counterfeiters everywhere . . . With the guiding hand of a good friend and prose that keeps the reader’s eye moving, Olmsted insists that readers ‘shop better and cook more.’” —Publishers Weekly, starred review “Equal parts foodie chronicle and investigative exposé . . . Real Food / Fake Food is less treatise than guidebook, showing readers how to navigate an increasingly complex food system.” —Outside magazine “Required reading for cooks who genuinely care about quality and health . . . a fascinating read that sheds light on our under-regulated food industry. The book also serves as a handy guide to what items consumers should avoid, and how to find and identify the real deal.” —CookingLight.com “A striking look at the food industry. It’s unnerving that so many people don't know what authentic olive oil or port wine tastes like because they’ve been undersold on some off-shoot knock off and no one is raising a flag — until now.”—Ming Tsai, author, chef, and host of PBS’s Simply Ming “Larry Olmstead makes you insanely hungry and steaming mad in this provocative account of how fraud threatens not just the world’s great craft foods (think caviar, Kobe beef, and Parmigiano-Reggiano) but our everyday diet. A must-read for anyone who cares deeply about the safety of our food and the welfare our planet.”—Steven Raichlen, author of the Barbecue! Bible cookbook series and host of Project Smoke and Primal Grill on PBS “Do not take another bite or swallow another sip of anything, for your sake and the sake of your children, before reading Real Food Fake Food. It is the health equivalent of Ralph Nader's expose Unsafe at any Speed. The content blows the doors off the kitchens.” —Michael Patrick Shiels, radio host and author of Invite Yourself to the Party “Larry Olmsted’s meticulously researched tour de force is chilling for what he uncovers about the food industry. At the same time his love of great food and his skill in writing about it make me want to try every one of the real foods he recommends. A must-read for anyone with an interest in, well, eating.”—Dan Dunn, author of American Wino: A Tale of Reds, Whites and One Man’s Blues “The world is full of delicious, lovingly-crafted foods that embody the terrain, weather, and culture of their origins. Unfortunately, it’s also full of brazen impostors that are hard to identify. In this entertaining and important book, Larry Olmsted helps us fall in love with the real stuff and steer clear of the fraudsters. I'll never look at a menu the same way again.”—Kirk Kardashian, author of Milk Money: Cash, Cows, and the Death of the American Dairy Farm “In his solidly researched new book, USA Today food and travel columnist Olmsted, a well-traveled and knowledgeable food writer, takes readers on an enlightening but frequently disturbing culinary journey. While providing fascinating insights into where and how some of the most delicious food products are produced, the author also reveals how often these are imitated to detrimental effect…A provocative yet grounded look at the U.S. food industry.” —Kirkus Reviews “This is an important book to help all buyers shop prudently and with a wary eye toward the claims of food producers. Recommended for all consumers along with policymakers, those interested in food science, and marketing professionals.” —Library Journal “Olmsted gives us the lay of this seedy landscape with momentum and aplomb. He demystifies the process by which fake ingredients end up in your shopping cart, explains why some of these deceitful foods could be a real threat to your health, and sheds a light on the government policies and shortsighted commercialism that landed them there.” —Mother Jones
