Book SynopsisIn this noir collection, millionaire Wesley Dodds becomes the Sandman to fight injustice in 1930s New York City, going after kidnappers, blackmailers and predators who prey on rich socialites. The year is 1938, and the world is holding its breath mesmerized by the onrushing storm that will soon engulf it in fire and steel. In New York City, one man s sleep is filled with tormenting visions of the evils that mankind visits upon itself, compelling him to act. And so, by night, Wesley Dodds lays aside the trappings of his inherited wealth to roam the shadows as the Sandman, armed with a tranquilizing gas gun and driven by an unrelenting sense of justice. Haunted and obsessed, the Sandman moves through a decadent, post-Depression landscape, stalking the predators who hide themselves beneath society s callous indifference to the weak and vulnerable. No one sees him at his work until he chooses to reveal himself no one, that is, except the woman who is destined to be the light to his darkness. This compendium collects Sandman Mystery Theatre #1-26 (1993-1996) and Sandman Mystery Theatre Annual (1994).

It is an informative, light-hearted and reassuring look at growing up with a parent on the autism spectrum.Trade ReviewI really like this book: a compelling tale about living with a parent with Asperger's which manages to impart a lot of valuable information. Kirsti Evans' entertaining narrative pulls the reader along effortlessly, while John Swogger's clear full-colour graphics are sure to appeal. The characters are well defined and believable and the action rings true. It can be a challenge to make educational works engaging, but this book really nails it. -- Ian Williams, author of ‘The Bad Doctor’ and founder of GraphicMedicine.orgSomething Different About Dad is an excellent resource for families impacted by Asperger Syndrome. The authors serve as guides through the daily dilemmas that may emerge. They use an effective combination of image and text to explain terminology in concrete, useable ways. The book provides a non-judgmental categorization of differences in AS - how they may be manifested and managed while caring for all parties involved. The book also effectively addresses misinformation that one might encounter, making it a one-stop reference in this area. Most effective is the section in which a big family event that goes awry is deconstructed to help generate understanding. This book helpfully encourages concrete self-care for all parties while also promoting online safety. A bonus shout out to the power of comics in health information is greatly appreciated! BASED ON THE SMASH HIT SHOW: The Mandalorian has the highest viewership of any live-action show on Disney+ (Marvel included) and has consistently dominated since its debut in 2019. The finale of Season 2 had an estimated 1.1 million viewers. The finale episodes of the follow-up show, The Book of Boba Fett, focused so much on the continuation of The Mandalorian and Grogu’s story that it was dubbed “Mandalorian Season 2.5” by fans and the viewership for those episodes alone shot up to 1.5 million viewers. THE CHILD IS BELOVED BY FANS: Disney kept Grogu a tightly guarded secret leading up to the character’s first appearance in episode 1, at which point “The Child” became a massive fan favorite, inspiring a merch explosion, thousands of pieces of fan art, and an unquenchable desire for the fan-dubbed “Baby Yoda.” THE PERFECT SUBJECT FOR JEFFREY BROWN: The Mandalorian’s relationship with the child is the perfect playground for Brown’s charming take on fatherhood. Like Brown’s Darth Vader, Mando is a brooding, serious, masked character with a dark past, but he opens up to the joys of found fatherhood in the presence of Grogu. Their dynamic on the show hits the same tone Brown plays on in Darth Vader and Son in brand-new parenting contexts. Perfect for: Fans of the Darth Vader and Son series - Star Wars fans with kids of their own - The 1.5M viewers of the new Disney+ Star Wars shows © & TM LUCASFILM LTD. Used Under Authorization.

Book SynopsisBobby Sands was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who died on hunger strike while imprisoned at HM Prison Maze. He was the leader of the 1981 hunger strike in which Irish republican prisoners protested against the removal of Special Category Status. During his strike he was elected to the British Parliament as an Anti H-Block candidate. His death was followed by a new surge of Provisional IRA recruitment and activity. International media coverage brought attention to the hunger strikers, and the republican movement in general, attracting both praise and criticism. This graphic novel brings Bobby Sands’ story to life in a whole new way. Trade Reviewa thoroughly engrossing read … I’ve said it before when it comes to their line of Irish historical graphic novels but The O’Brien Press play an important part in keeping our history alive in the minds of people who are even more having their attention being called on by ever more shallow forms of so called entertainment. That is why I welcome this book and hopefully more like it as the quality and subject matter of the line of books is of such high quality, they are deserving of our time, attention and money. The book also boasts an afterword by Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams who comments on the legacy of Bobby Sands and the sacrifice for the greater good of Sands and his fellow hunger strikers. This powerful account of a very recent chapter in Irish history is a page turner -- irishcomicsnews.comArchitect-turned-Cartoonist Hunt surveys Sands’ life as an activist ... Buildings, streets, and furnishings are drawn with architect’s assurance. Figures are blocky and simplified, reminiscent of historic radical political cartooning -- Booklist

  • What Does Consent Really Mean?

Jessica Kingsley Publishers What Does Consent Really Mean?

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis"Consent is not the absence of 'NO', it is an enthusiastic YES!!"While seemingly straightforward, Tia and Bryony hadn't considered this subject too seriously until it comes up in conversation with their friends and they realise just how important it is.Following the sexual assault of a classmate, a group of teenage girls find themselves discussing the term consent, what it actually means for them in their current relationships, and how they act and make decisions with peer influence. Joined by their male friends who offer another perspective, this rich graphic novel uncovers the need for more informed conversations with young people around consent and healthy relationships. Accompanying the graphics are sexual health resources for students and teachers, which make this a perfect tool for broaching the subject with teens.Trade ReviewEvery school library and child's bookshelf should have a copy of this book. It is clear, accessible and extremely relevant. It addresses the myriad of issues that ought to be part of contemporary sex education: consent, sexting, sexual exploitation and toxic masculinity. It is both a useful starting point to these discussions, and a helpful referral tool. -- Kate Parker, Director of the Schools Consent ProjectOverall, I think this is a fantastic educational comic. It doesn't judge or talk down to its target adolescent audience. It understands that conversations about consent and sex are uncomfortable, and it aims to make learning about boundaries as casual and easy as possible. Most importantly, WHAT DOES CONSENT REALLY MEAN? doesn't vilify wanting to have sex, which I think repels a lot of teens from sex education. The comic is honest and straightforward, and it even includes statistics and resources in the back. I recommend it to anyone who is curious or uncomfortable having real discussions with others. -- COMICSVERSEFirst published in the U.K., this graphic novel follows the conversations that unfold among teenage classmates after a student leaves school following a sexual assault. Rumors circulate ('All I'm saying is she must be a bit of a slut,' says one girl, who is quickly put in her place), yet as the diverse group of teenage girls makes its way around town, one reveals that her boyfriend sometimes pressures her into 'doing stuff.' A group of boys joins the unfolding conversation, which evolves into a discussion about cultural pressures and leads to meaningful revelations. Though the dialogue can be forced, this comic, cleanly illustrated by Wilkins, could easily serve as an icebreaker for readers to share their thoughts and concerns about consent. Ages 13-up. -- Publishers WeeklyGr 8 Up-As a group of girls leave school one day, Amina's phone blows up-a girl at their school has been raped, and everyone has something to say. Was she drunk? Was she conscious? Had she agreed to sex before passing out? A deep discussion ensues, and the girls all draw from their experiences as they explore notions of consent and respect, eventually settling on some fundamental declarations. "Relationships are meant to feel good for both of you." "You need to be able to say no without feeling bad about it." Then the boys show up, contributing their side of the story: the pressure they feel to appear experienced combined with a culture that values machismo. Gratifyingly, these boy tears get fairly short shrift. Instead, as the teens wander home, the book comes full circle as the boys measure their own relationships and attitudes against what they've learned. "I've never even asked her what she likes." "I guess you just don't do anything unless it's a definite yes." The kids are realistically diverse across multiple spectrums: black, white, sexually active, virgins, straight, gay, and bisexual. Some readers may interpret Amina, who wears a headscarf, as abstinent, as she contributes no firsthand experiences to the discussion, despite being very well informed. Content that could be heavy with pedagogy is instead lightened by informal, occasionally profane language and friendly teasing. VERDICT While undeniably talky, this sex-positive and inclusive book offers a down-to-earth approach to an awkward subject. Belongs in every middle and high school library. -- School Library Journal, Starred ReviewTable of Contents1. What Does Consent Really Mean? 2. Resources.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisLament in the Night collects two remarkable novellas by the author Shosun Nagahara, translated from the Japanese for the first time. The title novella, originally published in 1925, follows itinerant day laborer Ishikawa Sazuko as he prowls the back alleys and bathhouses of Los Angeles, looking for a meal, a job or just someone to hold onto. The second novella follows a young mother working her way through bars and nightclubs after being abandoned by her gambling-addicted husband. Written in a deadpan tone that is both evocative and precise, this dazzling exercise in 1920s naturalist noir promises to become a classic of American literature. This first-ever English language publication of Lament in the Night opens up a whole realm of American literature that has been woefully underpublished and unexplored--namely, the literary heritage of non-English-speaking immigrants in America. Nagahara was influenced by many Western writers--especially Knut Hamsun, whose work he translated into Japanese--and his novels combine the gritty sensibility of Los Angeles noir with elements of Japanese traditional storytelling and epistolary techniques.

Book SynopsisConceived as part of a literary game among friends in 1816, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is today regarded as a classic piece of 19th century literature. The story begins with the journey of an adventurer, Robert Walton, who saves the life of a man at the North Pole. That man, Victor Frankenstein, tells Walton about his experiments with the creation of life and how he ended up at the North Pole. Through this simple plot device, Shelley was able to deal with serious real-world issues like acceptance, tolerance, and understanding, as well as the universal human need for companionship and love. The novel, of course, inspired a host of films, from the 1931 classic starring Boris Karloff to Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein, and more recently, a series of novels by Dean Koontz.
