APE S.P.A.M. BOOK
Book SynopsisS. P. A. M. Office looks like a traditional modernist office setting; uniform office furniture made up of cheap, low quality spam materials, and a coffee machine and all its obligatory accessories being present. Nylon tie-wraps are holding the mocha colored, cheap structural furniture panels together, being an ultimate representation of the volatility of spam. The spam officers hired by the exhibiting organization check e-mails, detect spam, print and prepare for a proofread and finally archive the letters. They become performers, wearing the uniform and logo of the firm', taking turns in a monotonous disarmament process to which spam is subjected. Of course this company mainly develops nonsensical operations, poetically supported by the decorum of bureaucracy. The messages are stripped of their corrupt, commercial deployment. The release of this book coincides with the performance S. P. A. M OFFICE' of Pieterjan Ginckels organized by Be-Part Center for Contemporary Art, Waregem, Belgium, (May 7th till May 15th 2011). Published in collaboration with Be-Part, Waregem (B).

The American University in Cairo Press A History of Arab Graphic Design
Book SynopsisArab graphic design emerged in the early twentieth century out of a need to influence, and give expression to, the far-reaching economic, social, and political changes that were taking place in the Arab world at the time. But graphic design as a formally recognized genre of visual art only came into its own in the region in the twenty-first century and, to date, there has been no published study on the subject to speak of. A History of Arab Graphic Design traces the people and events that were integral to the shaping of a field of graphic design in the Arab world. Examining the work of over eighty key designers from Morocco to Iraq, and covering the period from pre-1900 to the end of the twentieth century, Bahia Shehab and Haytham Nawar chart the development of design in the region, beginning with Islamic art and Arabic calligraphy, and their impact on Arab visual culture, through to the digital revolution and the arrival of the Internet. They look at how cinema, economic prosperity, and political and cultural events gave birth to and shaped the founders of Arab graphic design. Highlighting the work of key designers and stunningly illustrated with 600 color images, A History of Arab Graphic Design is an invaluable resource tool for graphic designers, one which, it is hoped, will place Arab visual culture and design on the map of a thriving international design discourse.Trade Review“[T]his book is a significant contribution to the global discourse on graphic design history, and essential for all graphic design and visual communication programs (especially in the Arab world). It brings together, under one cover, important yet little-known information. It offers a kaleidoscopic view of graphic design from the Arab world and grounds the field within the broader discussion of graphic design from the peripheries of the established design canon.”—Art Journal“Important and rich. . . an essential textbook for design educators all over the world. It’s the history book I wish I had as a student, and the resource I’ve been missing as a practicing designer. . . .[A] significant and long overdue publication.”—AIGA Eye on Design“Highlighting the work of key designers and stunningly illustrated with over 600 color images, [the authors] look at how cinema, economic prosperity, and political and cultural events gave birth to and shaped the founders of Arab graphic design.”—Holiday Powers, New Books Network"A groundbreaking publication. . . A History of Arab Graphic Design is filled with exquisite examples and is worth buying for the images alone, but of course a better appreciation for the work and the contexts in which they were created is gained by reading the rich history that accompanies the images."—Technical Communications"An essential new textbook for students and graphic designers from East and West"—PRINT“Easily the best introduction to the history of modern Arab visual culture on the market today.”—The Brooklyn Rail"A landmark . . . recommended . . . This book gives a much-needed visual overview of several generations of Arab graphic designers working in Arab countries and in different diasporas and exiles. It builds a history of Arab graphic design from the origins of printing through the 21st century, bringing the work of graphic designers across the region into conversation." —M. Lynx Qualey, Al-Fanar Media“Closing the gap on the history of Arab graphic design . . . with over 370 pages and 600 color illustrations, A History of Arab Graphic Design is an invaluable resource.”—Futuress Magazine"[O]ffers a thus far missing genealogy of Arab graphic design . . . a major feat"—The National News"A reference work on many levels . . . Book SynopsisThe age of the internet and media have brought about a growing interest in Asian culture and its various languages across the region. Han characters in particular, which are applied in Chinese, Japanese and Korean contexts respectively as three branches of the same written system, are becoming more than text-based communication devices. Due to the structure of the characters themselves, they are being utilised as flexible design elements that bring abstract visual concepts to life in breaking the barriers between the East and the West.As a follow-up to the original release in 2015, Hanzi•Kanji•Hanja 2 focuses more on the former (i.e. Hanzi) through over 100 projects that give the ancient type form a fresh and modern facelift. Like its predecessor, the book comprises logotypes and their applications to offer readers a closer insight into the art of the strokes; as well as a showcase of brand identities, posters, packaging, advertisements and the like – expanded further with case studies and interviews to serve as an inspiring reference point for designers of all cultures.

Thames & Hudson Ltd North
Book SynopsisThe long-awaited monograph of the UK's leading graphic design and branding agency. The world is full of design companies, but none of them are like North. Formed in 1995 by Sean Perkins joined for the past 25 years by Jeremy Coysten and Stephen Gilmore the studio has always followed a highly individualistic path. This individualism manifests itself in many ways: most notably in the absence of a densely populated studio website; there are no hyperactive social media feeds; even the studio's name, derived from Perkins' origins in the unmetropolitan north of England, stands for frill-free, plain speaking, visual directness. It's almost as if North is a well-kept secret. Yet the group has a devoted worldwide following, and attracts myriad clients keen to hire them for their ability to produce memorable and carefully engineered visual identities. North's work is the product of sharp-brained research, high-end craft and precise visual expression. And as can be seen in the pages of this

V & A Publishing Videogames
Book SynopsisVideogames explores the design and culture of videogames since the mid-2000s, investigating the ground-breaking contemporary design work, creative and rebellious player communities and the political conversations that contribute to the defining genre of our time. A star-studded cast of contributors consider the wide spectrum of gaming life, from blockbusters The Last of Us and Overwatch through to cultural phenomena such as Minecraft, and alongside less mainstream productions like Consume Me.Trade Review"Visitors to the Victoria & Albert Museum gallery will be able to immerse themselves in the Game of Thrones land of Westeros while watching people splatter each other with ink when a video games exhibition opens this year. Announcing details of the show on Friday, Tristram Hunt, director of the V&A, said video games were "one of the most important design disciplines of our time". He added that he was confident the museum's founding director, Henry Cole, would also have staged the show. "Contemporary video games are strikingly innovative, uniquely creative and commercially successful - making a huge social and cultural impact across the globe," Hunt said." The Guardian The V&A exhibition will focus on video game design from the mid-2000s, [...] there will be plenty [...] to feast the eyes on, from concept art to moving footage, prototypes, character design sketches, and interactive installations. Highlights will include glimpses into the creative process Nintendo's Splatoon (2015), and of The Last of Us (2013) - a breathtaking post-apocalyptic marvel from Naughty Dog (a sequel is currently in the works). Also on view will be the painstakingly accurate recreation of the continent of Westeros from Game of Thrones in Minecraft, and a section exploring DIY arcade games and grassroots gaming culture." Wallpaper.com "Game Of Thrones and the art of Magritte are among the unlikely inspirations behind hit videogames explored in a new exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Director Tristram Hunt said it was "the right time" for the museum to be looking at a global business that reaches 2.2 billion people across the world." Evening Standard "From September the world famous V&A will be giving gamers a rare glimpse into the creative process of developing games such as The Last of Us to Kentucky Route Zero including original prototypes, early character designs, and notebooks." Mirror "Now the controversial world of videogames is to be at the centre of a major exhibition at the Victoria & Albert Museum. The exhibition, to open next September, will examine all aspects of videogames - from ground breaking contemporary design to `player communities' and the imbalance between the male dominated industry and the growing numbers of women gamers. Large scale installations and hands-on interactive experiences will allow visitors to explore the rapidly changing design and technology of today's videogames." Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Reading Graphic Design in Cultural Context
Book SynopsisGrace Lees-Maffei is Professor of Design History at the University of Hertfordshire, UK. Nicolas P. Maffei is Senior Lecturer in Graphics at Norwich University of the Arts, UK.Trade ReviewReaders (and not just students) interested in looking contextually at the history of graphic design will surely benefit from Grace Lees-Maffei and Nicolas P. Maffei’s latest book. It offers much food for thought, a gold mine of relevant historiographical literature, a wide range of worthwhile subjects and thoughtfully maps approaches to graphic design in relation to culture, whether through theory or the historical study of genres of graphic design practice. * Journal of Design History *Includes an excellent historical framing of the discipline’s transformations, both as a professional field and as an object of scholarly research ... The “expanded field” approach allows first for a richer and more complex understanding of design processes, liberated from the mere concern of commercial constraints and objectives and aesthetics ambitions and successes ... [The book is] a perfect match of graphic design in all its diversity, a clever analysis of the multiple interfaces that structure the back and forth movements between design and society, and a smart example of good writing ... An excellent springboard to further analysis and an invitation to return to traditional examples whose interpretation is still confined to strictly commercial or essentially art-historical schemata. The iconography is well-chosen, and the central full color section is a pleasure for the eye and the mind. * Leonardo Reviews *In this critical yet accessible book, Grace Lees-Maffei and Nicolas P. Maffei shift the popular perception of graphic design from surface treatment to complex cultural practice. * D.J. Huppatz, Associate Professor of Architecture and Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Australia *Reading Graphic Design in Cultural Context is a refreshing and insightful contribution to design history and a valuable resource for teachers, students, and scholars of visual communication. This engaging set of historical case studies expands the discipline to consider such topics as the colonization of public space in both print and digital media; the relationship between legibility and ambiguity in modern and postmodern design; gender, race, and desire in fashion photography and advertising; wide-ranging information graphics from maps and sign systems to the “quantified self”; slogan t-shirts; music packaging; corporate brand identity; concerns for environmental sustainability; visual techniques of persuasion in guide books and advice literature; and the evolving medium of the book. It offers a clearly written, accessible, and compelling argument that semiotics continues to provide a dynamic, flexible model for making sense of a world increasingly saturated by visual signs today. It is an excellent critical guide, the best written thus far, to the study of signs, which emerged in structural linguistics and anthropology of Ferdinand de Saussure and Claude Lévi-Strauss in the early twentieth century, and which evolved in the work of Charles Peirce and Roland Barthes. Students as well as general readers will appreciate this clear and concise overview of a topic that can easily confound even the sharpest thinkers. * Rebecca Houze, Professor of Art and Design History at Northern Illinois University, USA *Table of ContentsAcknowledgements Contents List of Illustrations Reading Graphic Design in the Expanded Field: An Introduction, Grace Lees-Maffei Part One: On Message and Off Message 1 - Branding as Sign System: Semiotics in Action, Grace Lees-Maffei 2 – The Responsive Brand: Uniformity and Flexibility in Logo Design, Nicolas P. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Design in Motion
Book SynopsisWith an abundance of information on how to create motion graphics already available, Design in Motion focuses on the why of moving image and less about the how. By unpacking the reasons behind screen designer's production choices, each chapter deconstructs examples of motion graphics by drawing on case studies of both familiar examples from contemporary cinema and unseen work from postgraduate motion graphic designers. It examines the value of image, text, motion, camera and transitions, explaining in detail why some methods work, while others fail. Whether you work in info-graphics, documentary or design, this book is structured to follow the production process and, together with its multimedia companion website, will be a by-your-side companion to guide you through your next project.Trade ReviewDesign in Motion is an essential handbook in conceiving, planning and realising moving image production, providing a comprehensive guide for professional or aspiring creatives wishing to communicate with time based media. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Ethics in Design and Communication
Book SynopsisThis timely collection brings together critical, analytic, historical, and practical studies to address what ethics means in the practice of design.Designers face the same challenges as everyone else in the complex conditions of contemporary cultural lifechoices about consumption, waste, exploitation, ecological damage, and political problems built into the supply chains on which the global systems of inequity currently balance precariously. But designers face the additional dilemma that their paid work is often entangled with promoting the same systems such critical approaches seek to redress: how to reconcile this contradiction, among others, in seeking to chart an ethical course of action while still functioning effectively in the world.Ethics in Design and Communication acknowledges the complexity of this subject matter, while also demonstrating that in the ongoing struggle towards an equitable and sustainable world, the talents of design and critical thought are essential. Trade ReviewWe are no longer operating in a world where we simply encounter objects and artifacts designed to act upon us. We are increasingly working on platforms and living in environments that are themselves designed to influence our thinking and behaviors. This is a wide-ranging survey of the deeper implications of design choices in the twenty-first century, and an urgent call to bring ethics back into the process, before they are rendered out of reach. * Douglas Rushkoff, author of Team Human and Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at Queens College, City University of New York, USA *This is an authoritative and inflected call for design to find the will to engage with our contemporary anxieties, if not to propose solutions to them. The book is a useful contribution to an important topic, and it will readily find its readership. * Tom Fisher, Professor of Art and Design at Nottingham Trent University, UK *This is an important and vital contribution to design education and research. I commend the editors and authors on this achievement. * Laurene Vaughan, Professor of Design RMIT University, Australia *Table of ContentsINTRODUCTION Preface Acknowledgments Introduction to the Selection of Texts Foreword: Assumptions of Ethics and Agency in Design Johanna Drucker In Search of a Philosophy for Design Ethics Laura Scherling DESIGN IN SOCIETY Designing Ethics in Large Scale Sociotechnical Systems Jeffrey Chan All Models Are Wrong: Information Design in a Post-truth World Rachel Berger Swiping Left on Empathy: Gamification and Commodification of the (Inter)face Sarah Edmands Martin Dark User Experience: From Manipulation to Deception Marc Miquel-Ribé Designing Safe Spaces for Virtual Reality: Methods for Merging Body Sovereignty Theory into VR Design Practice Michelle Cortese, Andrea Zeller Who Owns the Smart City? Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Interfaces and Us
Book SynopsisZachary Kaiser is Associate Professor of Graphic Design and Experience Architecture at Michigan State University, USA. His research and creative practice examine the politics of technology and the role of design in shaping the parameters of individual, social, and political possibility. His work has been featured in national and international exhibitions, and his writing, on topics ranging from the future of the arts in higher education to dream-reading technologies, appears in both scholarly and popular publications.Trade ReviewZach Kaiser's Interfaces and Us dares to peel back the plastic film protecting interface design to reveal how it is both shapes and is shaped by everything from convenience and consumerism to market forces and economic inequality. While finally putting to rest the idea that design is inherently neutral, it's an indispensable guide to the politics of how we interface not just with the digital systems around us, but with late capitalism itself. -- Tim Maughan, author of Infinite Detail, CanadaInterfaces and Us blends theory, art, activism and pedagogy into a cogent story about the making of selves and societies. Bodleian Library Designing English: Early Literature on the Page
Book SynopsisEarly manuscripts in the English language include religious works, plays, romances, poetry and songs, as well as charms, notebooks, science and medieval medicine. How did scribes choose to arrange the words and images on the page in each manuscript? How did they preserve, clarify and illustrate writing in English? What visual guides were given to early readers of English in how to understand or use their books? 'Designing English' is an overview of eight centuries of graphic design in manuscripts and inscriptions from the Anglo-Saxon to the early Tudor periods. Working beyond the traditions established for Latin, scribes of English needed to be more inventive, so that each book was an opportunity for redesigning. 'Designing English' focuses on the craft, agency and intentions of scribes, painters and engravers in the practical processes of making pages and artefacts. It weighs up the balance of ingenuity and copying, practicality and imagination in their work. It surveys bilingual books, format, ordinatio, decoration and reading aloud, as well as inscriptions on objects, monuments and buildings. With over ninety illustrations, drawn especially from the holdings of the Bodleian Library in Old English and Middle English, 'Designing English' gives a comprehensive overview of English books and other material texts across the Middle Ages.Trade Review'From Anglo-Saxon gospels to early Tudor monuments, this beautifully illustrated work explores 800 years of graphic design.' * The Arts Society Journal *'Studded with nearly a hundred illustrations, this is much more gripping than its over-technical title might suggest.' * History Revealed *'Good examples of English on the page with a text that illuminates it discursively, full of interesting details and with an original voice. … I found my vision refreshed and my curiosity enhanced by this attractive book.' * Edge: Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society *'An extremely important survey …the quality of the production is high, pricing very competitive and the many full colour illustrations superbly complement the text. 'Designing English' deserves a wide readership, and not just in academia.' -- Colin Steele * Australian Book Collector *'A welcome addition to a growing corpus of scholarship on pre-modern reading … a big, gorgeous book, lavishly illustrated.' * TLS *Table of ContentsContents Foreword Acknowledgements Introduction 1 Making Space for English 2 Making Pages 3 Pages for Reading 4 Decorating Pages 5 Pages for Voicing 6 English in Space Further Reading Quotations and References Notes Picture Credits Index of Manuscripts General Index
