Book SynopsisOrnaments are omnipresent – they can be found on buildings, fabrics, jewelry, tiles, ceramics and wallpaper. Scorned at the beginning of the modern age, ornament has long since returned to art and architecture and influences design drafts as much as tattoo motifs. In New Grammar of Ornament, Thomas Weil compares current ornamental objects with the results of archaeological research on ornamental artifacts and concludes that there is an anthropological constant. From the recurring arrangements of stripes, rectangles, triangles and dots and the frequency of the forms of floral ornaments used, he derives a new “grammar of ornament.” More than 160 years after Owen Jones’s publication Grammar of Ornament, by publishing his New Grammar of Ornament Thomas Weil is offering a new reference work. It categorizes the variety of ornamental forms used worldwide and for the first time places them in a major art and cultural historical context.

Book SynopsisAn elaborately illustrated A to Z of the face, from historical mugshots to Instagram posts.By turns alarming and awe-inspiring, Face offers up an elaborately illustrated A to Z—from the didactic anthropometry of the late-nineteenth century to the selfie-obsessed zeitgeist of the twenty-first.Jessica Helfand looks at the cultural significance of the face through a critical lens, both as social currency and as palimpsest of history. Investigating everything from historical mugshots to Instagram posts, she examines how the face has been perceived and represented over time; how it has been instrumentalized by others; and how we have reclaimed it for our own purposes. From vintage advertisements for a “nose adjuster” to contemporary artists who reconsider the visual construction of race, Face delivers an intimate yet kaleidoscopic adventure while posing universal questions about identity.

  • Borderless Fashion Practice: Contemporary Fashion

Rutgers University Press Borderless Fashion Practice: Contemporary Fashion

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTwenty-first century fashion practice has become increasingly borderless and diverse in the digital era, calling into question the very boundaries that define fashion in the Western cultural context. Borderless Fashion Practice: Contemporary Fashion in the Metamodern Age principally engages the work of four fashion designers -- Virgil Abloh, Aitor Throup, Iris Van Herpen, and Eckhaus Latta -- whose work intersects with other creative disciplines such as art, technology, science, architecture, and graphic design. They do their work in what Vanessa Gerrie calls the metamodern age -- the time and place where the polarization between the modern and the postmodern collapses. Used as a framework to understand the current Western cultural zeitgeist, Gerrie's exploration of the work of contemporary practitioners and theorists finds blurred borders and seeks to blur them further, to the point of erasure.Trade Review"A well-balanced and highly informative read. The first book-length study of metamodernism in fashion, Borderless Fashion Practice makes a significant contribution to our understanding of one of the most important trends in the contemporary fashion industry. Especially commendable is Vanessa Gerrie’s diverse choice of designers who, though very different from each other, all illustrate the practice of 'borderless fashion.'"— Graham H. Roberts, author of Consumer Culture, Branding and Identity in the New Russia: From Five-year Plan to 4x4 "Gerrie’s concept of “borderless fashion” demonstrates how contemporary fashion practices include key aspects of our society and culture that go far beyond fashion itself."— Patrizia Calefato, author of Fashion as Cultural Translation: Signs, Images, NarrativesTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Introduction 1 On Metamodernism 2 Fashion in the Academy 3 Fashion’s Democratization 4 Collaboration and Experimentation between Fashion and Art 5 Fashion as a Concept 6 Virgil Abloh’s Democratic Fashion Practice 7 Aitor Throup’s Divergent Design 8 Iris van Herpen’s “New Couture” 9 Eckhaus Latta’s Community-Led Brand Conclusion Acknowledgments Notes Bibliography Index

Edition Axel Menges Gunter Rambow Posters: Plakate / Posters

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisText in English and German. Gunter Rambow (b.1938) is one of the most prominent designers in the area of visual communication and cultural advertising. He produced numerous photo books and outstanding posters at the Rambow & Lienemeyer graphic design studio (1961-86), and is now carrying on his work at the Rambow, van de Sand studio. Particularly with his posters for the Schauspiel Frankfurt under the direction of Peter Palitzsch, Rambow succeeded in creating symbols for theatre's claim to political involvement and effectively introducing them into the urban environment. From 1974 to 2003 Gunter Rambow taught at the Universität Kassel and the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe as a professor of visual communication. In 2007, the Museum für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt is following the example of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Shanghai Art Museum and many other institutions and dedicating a major solo exhibition to his work. The show is an encounter between more than one hundred posters by Gunter Rambow -- dating from 1962 to the present -- and Richard Meier's museum architecture. The publication appearing in conjunction with this exhibition documents the dialogue between Rambow's poster art and Meier's museum building. Authors Eva Linhart, Anita Kühnel and Volker Fischer acquaint readers with Rambow's poster oeuvre -- far beyond the limited number on exhibit -- and his aesthetic strategies. Not only is light shed on the latter from the art-historical perspective, but a sense is conveyed of Rambow's innovative achievement in using the medium of the poster to create unmistakable corporate designs for a spectrum of widely differing institutions. The catalogue moreover provides an analytical appraisal of Rambow's ability to trigger insights about the environment and human relationships in those who view his posters.

Book SynopsisA portfolio by Joseph Szabo. Composed of 21 previously unpublished photographs of teens taken over three decades, from 1969 to 1999. The idea sparked during an afternoon spent at Joseph Szabo's home looking through his archive in the spring of 2013. 10 years later, Aude Delerue asked him if he would agree to publish the content of a box that she had remembered since as yet unexposed to the public's eye. Intrigued, Joseph Szabo was keen to make the old box resurface.

  • Holy Onion

    Osiris Holy Onion

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisIn his photobook Holy Onion, Japanese photographer Motoyuki Daifu concentrates on his mother, photographed while she peels an onion in the family's kitchen (both mother and kitchen are familiar to us from Daifu's previous works portraying his family's life). In 35 continuous photographs, Daifu captures his mother peeling onions, frame by frame. The photographs are taken only moments apart, as Daifu's mother cuts into the onion in her hand, scratches her nose, look at the camera, back at the onion, wipe her eyes. The book's accordion design, with some images separated by white pages, others grouped together, adds to the continuous nature of the sequence. As the images progress, small details in the setting change, and by the end of the book, the plate with onion peels is again empty, the process ready to start all over again. With Holy Onion, Daifu pays close attention to the intricacies of mundane tasks and accentuates the beauty within (almost automatic) everyday routines. The book also features an essay by Chris Fujiwara (in English).

The Morning News attempts to convey the sense of anxiety that an unsure economy and world state contribute to a calculated exposure to information which leaves the average cultural consumer with a sense that things are out of balance. This is not a show explicitly about the economic crisis; it is about the state of the society when communication is king, when the news at the top of the hour creates an ambience for your daily life, allowing for a quotidian dose of negativity. More than ever, and at an increasingly fast pace, we are exposed to information from a variety of reliable, partisan and objective sources. We can seek out as muc

Book SynopsisAlmost a century later, at a time when young artists are coming back to ancient processes for contemporary expression, how can we reinterpret and extend this face-to-face encounter between the artist and the glass plate, its light and its material? In the same way, in an era that claims the place of women in the history of art, how can we question or shake up this so ordinary phenomenon of domination, whether it is the relationship to women of the artists themselves, or a certain form of resistance still today to place women artists at the heart of the creation. We have chosen to ask Anaïs Boudot to take up this challenge, that of an artistic confrontation around the cliché under glass, as well as that of a response to the veil that has long been imposed on women artists. Anaïs Boudot has created a series of works on a set of anonymous glass plates from her collection, all of which represent female figures. A modernity in the materials, in the light as well as in the tone that both

Book SynopsisThe contributors to this book are both cautionary and hopeful as they offer visions of how information design can be practiced diligently and ethically, for the benefit of information consumers as well as producers.Information design is the newest of the design disciplines. As a sign of our times, when the crafting of messages and meaning is so central to our lives, information design is not only important—it is essential. Contemporary information designers seek to edify more than to persuade, to exchange more than to foist upon. With ever more powerful technologies of communication, we have learned that the issuer of designed information is as likely as the intended recipient to be changed by it, for better or worse. The contributors to this book are both cautionary and hopeful as they offer visions of how information design can be practiced diligently and ethically, for the benefit of information consumers as well as producers.
