Grammar, syntax and morphology Books
Peeters Publishers Nisili. Manuel De Langue Hittite. Volume II: Le

Peeters Publishers A Syntax of Septuagint Greek
Book SynopsisThis is the first ever comprehensive analysis of the morphosyntax and syntax of Septuagint Greek. The work is based on the most up-to-date editions of the Septuagint. The so-called Antiochene version of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles as well as Judges has been studied. Though this is a synchronic grammar, and though not systematic, comparison with Classical Greek, the Greek of contemporary literature of the Hellenistic-Roman period, papyri and epigraphical data, and New Testament Greek has often been undertaken. Even when analysing translated documents of the Septuagint, the perspective is basically that of its readers. However, attempts were made to determine in what ways and to what extent the structure of the Semitic source languages may have influenced the selection of this or that particular construction by translators. At many places it is demonstrated and illustrated how an analysis of the morphosyntax and syntax can illuminate our general interpretation of the Septuagint text.

Peeters Publishers Te lea faka'uvea / Le wallisien

Peeters Publishers Meister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt: Modism and
Book SynopsisMeister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt lived streets away from one another. Thomas was the last great figure of the Modistae, the speculative grammarians who were concerned with the relationship between grammar and ontology, the structure of the sentence mirroring the structure of the world. Thomas’ major work – the Grammatica speculativa – was deeply influential in the medieval period. But does Thomas’ geographical proximity to Eckhart suggest a concomitant influence of modism on his thought? What of modism’s legacy after the rapid demise of the grammatical theory in the early-mid fourteenth century? The contributions to this volume deal with these matters, and were originally presented at the ‘Meister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt’ conference at the Max-Weber-Center at the University of Erfurt, 14-15 November 2013.

Peeters Publishers Ethiopic Paradigms: A Summary of Classical
Book SynopsisEthiopic Paradigms provides a systematic presentation of the morphology of the Classical Ethiopic language (also known as Ge'ez). Ethiopic is a crucial language for those interested in the history of Christianity and of Judaism, in Africa and the broader Near East during Late Antiquity up through the Medieval period, as well as in Semitic languages and linguistics. Ethiopic preserves a large corpus of texts, including especially Christian literature of various genres, such as chronicles, hagiography, homilies, liturgy, philosophy, poetry, and theology. In addition, several significant texts stemming from Second Temple Judaism, in particular the books of Enoch and Jubilees, are preserved in Ethiopic. This pedagogical aide is a useful resource for students who are just starting to learn Ethiopic as well as for more advanced students who need to review a form or paradigm. Among its distinguishing characteristics, Ethiopic Paradigms is unique in presenting the morphology of Ethiopic both in transcription and in script.

To a remarkable degree the Syntax of Dutch project manages to harmonize demands of depth and breadth. In part this appears to be due to the highly systematic approach followed. I believe the Syntax of Dutch project will ultimately become a model for comprehensive grammatical description in the years ahead.” - Richard Larson, Professor of Linguistics at University of Stony Brook

Amsterdam University Press Syntax of Dutch: Coordination and Ellipsis
Book SynopsisThe multi-volume work Syntax of Dutch presents a synthesis of current thinking on Dutch syntax. The text of the seven already available volumes was written between 1995 and 2015 and issued in print between 2012 and 2016. The various volumes are primarily concerned with the description of the Dutch language and, only where this is relevant, with linguistic theory. They will be an indispensable resource for researchers and advanced students of languages and linguistics interested in the Dutch language. This volume is the final one of the series and addresses issues relating to coordination. It contains three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the syntactic and semantic properties of coordinate structures and their constituting elements, that is, the coordinators and the coordinands they link. Chapter 2 discusses the types of ellipsis known as conjunction reduction and gapping found in coordinate structures. Chapter 3 discusses elements seemingly exhibiting coordination-like properties, such as dan ‘than’ in comparative constructions like Jan is groter dan zij ‘Jan is taller than she’.Table of ContentsAbbreviations and symbols Preface and acknowledgments 1. Book SynopsisThe Syntax of Hungarian aims to present a synthesis of the currently available syntactic knowledge of the Hungarian language, rooted in theory but providing highly detailed descriptions, and intended to be of use to researchers as well as advanced students of language and linguistics. As research in language leads to extensive changes in our understanding and representations of grammar, the Comprehensive Grammar Resources series intends to present the most current understanding of grammar and syntax as completely as possible in a way that will both speak to modern linguists and serve as a resource for the non-specialist.Trade Review"The material discussed in Postpositions and postpositional phrases definitely goes beyond what can be found on the often neglected category of adpositions and adverbs elsewhere, in the few traditional descriptive works on the topic (primarily written in Hungarian) and the handful of analytical works in the last 50 years of generative theorising. This book is the first complete overview of this rich grammatical domain, which will no doubt become the standard reference on the topic. It has all qualities of a reference grammar and it reads as a homogeneous and coherent product, clearly the result of substantial team effort and thorough editing." - János Egressy and Anikó Lipták, Folia Linguistica, Vol. 56, Iss. 2Table of ContentsGeneral introduction (István Kenesei, General Editor) 1. The Chinese University Press Cantonese Colloquial Expressions
Book SynopsisThis book of Cantonese idioms is a pragmatic reference guide to everyday Cantonese conversation in Hong Kong. It will help learners understand speakers' intended meanings, since people do not always use the literal meaning of words or phrases in communication with others. Instead people often use metaphors and figurative language to express themselves. It is important to note that the metaphorical use of language is pervasive in all aspects of human discourse, including casual conversation as well as poetry. It provides coverage of over 1,800 entries of the most commonly-used Cantonese colloquial expressions. Entries are clearly grouped under ten different categories, with an index for ease of reference. The user-friendly Yale Romanization system is adopted, with a brief pronunciation guide.

Book SynopsisThis book is a collection of seven articles published in the past decade by the author. These articles are concerned with various issues including possessor raising, null subject, null object, pied-piping in logical form, focus marker, question formation, and adverbial reflexive. Each article has made a contribution to its topic. More importantly, these seven articles, taken as a whole, also constitute a window through which readers may look at the issues from a formal syntactic perspective and get a sense as how works have been conducted in the framework concerned, how arguments have been constructed, and how justifications have been provided in the field.

Marshall Cavendish International (Asia) Pte Ltd The Nuts and Bolts of English Grammar
Book SynopsisEver wondered why we can say “Maria made the boy cry” but not “Maria made the boy crying”? Or why “Two coffees, please” is acceptable, but “Melvin loves coffees” is generally wrong? Or why we say “It has been raining since ten”, even though nobody asks “What did you say has been raining”? These are some puzzles that will be examined in The Nuts and Bolts of English Grammar. This book will help you understand what English grammar is and how it works. It will show how English combines parts of words to form longer words, how words change their form and combine with other words to form phrases, and how phrases are subsequently combined to form clauses and sentences and texts. Grammar is made both interesting and practical with real-life grammar puzzles. Will this book help you to improve your grammar? Probably, because if you’ve gained a better understanding of grammar by the time you reach the end of this book, you should be able to analyse your own sentences in ways you’ve never done before, and spot and avoid common grammatical errors.
