Centre for the Study of Language & Information Mismatch: Form-Function Incongruity and the
Book SynopsisLinguistic mismatch phenomena involve semiotic functions that attach to forms in defiance of grammatical design features. Noun phrases, when used as predicates, are one example. How do predicate nominals correspond to our theories of what nouns mean? How do such phenomena challenge traditional conceptions of grammar? How do competing theories of the syntax-semantics interface stand up when confronted with mismatch phenomena? "Mismatch" addresses these questions through the efforts of some of the most original thinkers in semantic and semantic theory, exploring a wide variety of mismatch phenomena in a broad sampling of languages.

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Discontinuous NPs in German: A Case Study of the
Book SynopsisThis book investigates the occurrence of discontinuous noun phrases, arguing that many of the factors that previous literature has tried to explain in terms of syntactic restrictions on movement are in fact derivable from discourse factors. De Kuthy's HPSG and information-structure analyses provide an exemplary argument for rethinking the division of labour between syntax theory and a theory of discourse.

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Words and Structure
Book SynopsisWhat kinds of words can exist in natural languages? How are sentenced constructed? What is the relationship between a word and the sentence in which it appears. How do language learners figure all this out? Presenting over a decade of original research, "Words and Structure" collects four influential papers that address the theory of words, the structure of sentences and the relationship between the two. Jane Grimshaw sheds new light on the fundamental questions of the nature of word meanings, sentence structure, and language acquisition. Those interested in the puzzles of language learning but dissatisfied with current theories and models should find this a valuable volume on the subject.

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Morphology and the Web of Grammar: Essays in
Book SynopsisThis collection presents papers in memory of Steven G. Lapointe, a distinguished professor of linguistics at the University of California, Davis, at the time of his death in 1999. Lapointe's work on morphology and its connection to other linguistic subfields was the basis of a workshop held at UC Davis in 2000. This selection of papers from that workshop discusses the relationship of morphology to phonology, syntax, and semantics, as well as the details of modern morphological theory—forming a natural continuation of the intellectual developments in Lapointe et al.'s Morphology and Its Relation to Phonology and Syntax.

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Projecting Morphology
Book SynopsisThe separation of syntax and morphology is a major principle in contemporary lexicalist theories. The syntactic theory of Lexical-Functional Grammar recognizes this separation on a structural level but argues that both are equal, interacting, and competing contributors in a functional setting. This book discusses the relationship between morphology and LFG, reintroducing two seminal papers on the theory's impact on morphology and presenting new material on current morphological issues, including the nature of morphosyntactic paradigms and the role of optimality theory.

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Nominals: Inside and Out
Book SynopsisSince the early 1970s, the proper treatment and nominals and nominalization has been fundamental to syntactic theory. And yet a satisfactory approach continues to prove elusive. Working within the framework of Lexical-Functional Grammar, this book discusses the precise reasons why pronouns show particular distributions, why nominalized verbs inherit the predicational power of the verbs they're derived from, and what kind of syntactic category derived nominals should be assigned. Recent developments in LFG make it possible to examine discourse clitics and case markers as well, meaning this collection can address both "classic" nominal issues and novel new perspectives.

Baraka Books Exhilarating Prose: Cognitions, Contemplations,
Book SynopsisThis smartly illustrated literary miscellanea is intended to stimulate readers and writers of English prose. From "dead language – the speaks" (i.e., ad-speak, media-speak, corporate-speak) through "re-writing – Again?" to rules (to obey or not to obey), authors Barry Healey and Cordelia Strube examine what makes good and bad writing. With tongue often in cheek, they scrutinize various forms of prose and the seven major prose elements, and reflect on how to approach the writing process most effectively. Exhilarating Prose also abounds with examples of startling writing, wide-ranging quotes from celebrated authors, and their own ruminations on the oddities of writing and the infinite eccentricity of the human mind. To those interested in English words "in their best order" (Coleridge), this book will inform, engage, and amuse.

Centre for the Study of Language & Information Theoretical Perspectives on Word Order in South
Book SynopsisThis volume presents a collection of papers on word order variation in the languages of South Asia. These languages are interesting precisely because they exhibit such great flexibility in their word orders while not being completely non-configurational; and data from these languages have been the source of much recent research and controversy in this domain. The papers in this volume bring together both theoretical and empirical perspectives on word order variability within a wide variety of South Asian languages. They contribute particularly to a fuller description and understanding of the phenomena. They examine the extent to which linear precedence relations (word order) are determined/constrained by lexical, discourse, or purely syntactic levels of organization; and to what extent they represent an independent system of organisation with its own language-particular constraints and relations.Table of Contents1. Introduction Tracy Holloway King and Gillian Ramchand; 2. Bangla correlatives Tista Bagchi; 3. Structure of the Kashmiri clause Rakesh Mohan Bhatt; 4. Peeters Publishers Thinking English Grammar: To Honour Xavier
Book SynopsisThinking English Grammar. To Honour Xavier Dekeyser, Professor Emeritus contains papers by 34 colleagues of professor Dekeyser on subjects that have interested him throughout his career. His research has mainly been devoted to the history of English, and it is only natural that the first and longest section should consist of 11 papers on variation in English, both diachronic and synchronic. The second, barely shorter with its 9 papers, is devoted to the description of various aspects of modern English; some of these papers shade off into theoretical linguistics. Professor Dekeyser having obtained his Ph.D. on grammaticography, there is a third section on "Grammar from the Past", with 5 papers. The final section, 9 papers on "Language Teaching and Contrast", honours the eminent teacher of literally thousands of budding anglicists.

Peeters Publishers Word Order and Phrase Structure in Gothic
Book SynopsisThe book aims at providing a precise description of part of the Gothic syntax in the context of a formal theory of syntax. The following questions are addressed: To what extent can Gothic - despite its limited corpus - be used as data material? Further, which of the ascertained syntactic characteristics does Gothic have in common with other old Indo-European languages? Which of these features can be characterized as typically Germanic? It is shown that - despite a certain Greek influence - the Gothic Bible is indeed a rich source of data which can with some certainty be regarded as typically Gothic. Phenomena concerning the left periphery like personal pronouns, topicalization, left-dislocation and discourse particles are described and discussed within the generative framework, with additions from pragmatic and cognitive linguistics for those issues where syntax seems to be inadequate to cover the whole range of the phenomena concerned. The readership aimed at is that of linguists and philologists, and of scholars interested in the interrelation between both disciplines.

Peeters Publishers Word Classes and Related Topics in Ancient Greek:
Book SynopsisThe book presents an up-to-dated and thorough treatment of an important part of the syntax of Ancient Greek, the Word Classes. It collects most of the papers read at the international conference held in Madrid on 18-21, June 2003 by linguists and classicists coming from a large number of European countries. Since some of the 31 published papers deal with or touch on other syntactic subjects than Word Classes, this volume can be considered as reflecting a large part of the research on Ancient Greek Syntax nowadays. It intends to be useful for classicists, historical linguists and Hellenists. The book provides three indexes (general, Greek words, Greek texts studied).

Peeters Publishers Grammaire Sanskrite a L'usage Des Etudiants

Peeters Publishers Meister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt: Modism and
Book SynopsisMeister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt lived streets away from one another. Thomas was the last great figure of the Modistae, the speculative grammarians who were concerned with the relationship between grammar and ontology, the structure of the sentence mirroring the structure of the world. Thomas’ major work – the Grammatica speculativa – was deeply influential in the medieval period. But does Thomas’ geographical proximity to Eckhart suggest a concomitant influence of modism on his thought? What of modism’s legacy after the rapid demise of the grammatical theory in the early-mid fourteenth century? The contributions to this volume deal with these matters, and were originally presented at the ‘Meister Eckhart and Thomas of Erfurt’ conference at the Max-Weber-Center at the University of Erfurt, 14-15 November 2013.

Peeters Publishers Ethiopic Paradigms: A Summary of Classical
Book SynopsisEthiopic Paradigms provides a systematic presentation of the morphology of the Classical Ethiopic language (also known as Ge'ez). Ethiopic is a crucial language for those interested in the history of Christianity and of Judaism, in Africa and the broader Near East during Late Antiquity up through the Medieval period, as well as in Semitic languages and linguistics. Ethiopic preserves a large corpus of texts, including especially Christian literature of various genres, such as chronicles, hagiography, homilies, liturgy, philosophy, poetry, and theology. In addition, several significant texts stemming from Second Temple Judaism, in particular the books of Enoch and Jubilees, are preserved in Ethiopic. This pedagogical aide is a useful resource for students who are just starting to learn Ethiopic as well as for more advanced students who need to review a form or paradigm. Among its distinguishing characteristics, Ethiopic Paradigms is unique in presenting the morphology of Ethiopic both in transcription and in script.
