Taylor & Francis Ltd German Grammar Reviewed and Retold
Book SynopsisGerman Grammar: Reviewed and Retold is a user-friendly grammar/workbook designed to give German learners a great basis to build an in-depth knowledge of spoken and written German. Bridging the gap between grammar, storytelling, and culture, learners of the German language discover Germany's cultural history as well as life in Germany today, while absorbing grammatical structures through reading and practice. This grammar is based on recent Second Language Acquisition (SLA) research and word frequency, to embed vocabulary and grammar into a language-specific cultural context. A key component of this approach is consistency and relevance, enabling students to apply grammatical structures to their language learning, as well as talking about the past, present, and future. Aimed at ACTFL levels Novice (all) to Intermediate (middle)/CEFR A1 to B1, this is the perfect grammar for post-beginners, combining storytelling with grammar acquisition.Table of ContentsTable of ContentsThe concept of this GrammarAcknowledgements Pronouns Die rote Karte The many articles Siegfried und der Drache Genitive case Die schwarzen Jäger Adjectives Schiller und Goethe Asking questions Himmelfahrt Reflexive verbs Walpurgisnacht Modal verbs Schuberts Schüchternheit "möchten" and "mögen" Bettina und Beethovens Geheimnis Separable prefix verbs Im Strandkorb Two-way prepositions Der blaue Reiter Commands Störtebeker ärgert die Hanse Infinitive with "zu" Der Weihnachtsbaum The verb "werden" Der blaue Engel Passive voice Der Auftritt Udos Simple past Hänsel und Gretel Subjunctive Honeckers Theaterbesuch Present and past perfect Die Deutsche Bahn Conjunctions (for long sentences) Angie im Fitnesscenter Conjunctions to begin a sentence with Helmut Schmidts Zigarette Relative clauses Im Bürgerbüro Appendix I: Prepositions usage "für"and "zu"Appendix II: Verb conjugationAppendix III: Answer key

Taylor & Francis Ltd Linguistics for Translators
Book SynopsisThis engaging and accessible textbook, by two leading experts, is a carefully crafted introduction to linguistics for translators, students, and researchers of translation.Starting with basic concepts and gradually moving readers to the central questions in different branches of linguistics, examples are drawn from English and many other languages, including German, Arabic, Kurdish, Swahili, French, and Chinese. The key areas of linguistics are covered from morphology and syntax to semantics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, stylistics, sociolinguistics, and cognitive linguistics. Striking a balance between theoretical developments and empirical investigation, readers gain both a comprehensive overview of linguistics and how it informs their work in translation and learn how to argue for analysis and annotate their own answers and translations academically. Each chapter provides the reader with an overview outlining the main points and technical words used in the chapter as well as illustrative examples, recommended readings, and resources and activities to test knowledge. This is the ideal textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate students of translation in Translation Studies, Linguistics, and Modern languages.Trade ReviewYet another success story in the world of academic publishing. Linguistics for Translators is a major undertaking. To reconcile the two perspectives (sentence and text linguistics) and come up with a product relevant to both translator and linguist, is a mammoth task, executed seamlessly and most effectively.Emeritus Professor Basil Hatim, American University of Sharjah, UAELinguistics for Translators is a valuable addition to a field where theory and practice are closely intertwined. The authors review a wide range of linguistic concepts that are of relevance for the translator and illustrate them with clear, up-to-date examples in many languages. Frequent questions and tasks test and enhance the reader’s understanding.Jeremy Munday, Professor Emeritus in Translation Studies, University of Leeds, UKAlmanna and House adopt a perspective in their Linguistics for Translators which shows convincingly that systematic knowledge of language is a fascinating and necessary resource for understanding translation. They maintain contact with questions arising in translation studies through their valuable linguistic orientation with a strong pedagogical focus. A timely and most welcome contribution to the field.Univ.-Prof. Dr. Erich Steiner (i.R./ em.), Translation Studies Englisch, Saarland University, Dept. of Language Science and Technology.Linguistics for Translators by Almanna and House provides a ground-breaking contribution to translation studies. Taylor & Francis The Linguistic Cycle
Book SynopsisCyclical language change is a linguistic process by which a word, phrase, or part of the grammar loses its meaning or function and is then replaced by another. This can even happen on the level of an entire language, which can experience a change in the language family it is a part of. This new text is a comprehensive introduction to this phenomenon, the mechanisms underlying it, and the relations between the different types of cycles. Elly van Gelderen reviews the subject widely and holistically, defining key terms and comprehensively presenting diverse theoretical perspectives and empirical findings. With coverage of a variety of micro cycles and the more controversial macro cycles, incorporating cutting-edge work on grammaticalization, and drawing on examples from many languages and language families, this book accessibly guides readers through the state of the art in the field. Cambridge University Press Composite Predicates in English
Book SynopsisComposite Predicates (CPs) are of particular interest to linguists in that only some of them are semantically restricted in present-day English, while others are not. This book explores the semantic-syntactic evolution of twenty-four different CPs in English from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries, showing why some specialize over time while others do not. It highlights that the semantic scope and evolution of the morphologically and semantically related simple verb acts as a powerful predictor of whether or not a CP becomes semantically restricted in the course of time. In all those cases where CPs undergo specialization, semantic changes take place earlier than syntactic ones. Finally, large-scale corpus-analyses reveal that the CPs, which, in comparison to their morphologically simple verbs, can be considered analytic constructions, decrease from the nineteenth to twentieth century or show consistently low frequencies. This finding runs counter to the trend of English to become increasingly analytic.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Morphological Structure Lexical Representation
Book SynopsisThe main concern of this work is whether morphemes play a role in the lexical representation and processing of several types of polymorphemic words and, more particularly, at what precise representational and processing level. The book comprises two theoretical contributions and a number of empirical ones. One theoretical paper discusses several possible motivations for a morphologically organised mental lexicon (like the economy of representation view, and the efficiency of processing view), and lays out the weaknesses that are associated with some of these motivations. The other theoretical paper offers an interactive-activation reinterpretation of the findings that were originally reported within the lexical search framework. The empirical papers together cover a relatively broad array of language types and mainly deal with visual word recognition in normals in the context of lexical morphology (derived and compound words). Evidence is reported on the function of stems and affixeTable of ContentsPreface Dominiek Sandra and Marcus Taft. Cambridge University Press Elementary Syntactic Structures
Book SynopsisTurning grammar upside down, this book proposes a new model of syntax that is better suited for interdisciplinary interactions, and shows how syntax can proceed free of lexical influence. The empirical domain examined is vast, and all the fundamental units and properties of syntax are rethought.Trade Review'To be a good biolinguist, one needs to be a serious anti-lexicalist. Cedric Boeckx proves it by bringing together the highlights of modern syntactic theorizing and biological thinking.' Koji Fujita, Kyoto University'Cedric Boeckx presents a novel re-conceptualization of contemporary linguistic theory aimed at precipitating the Chomskyan vision of a reduction of linguistics to biology. His achievement is to simultaneously reduce the language-specific aspects of mankind's biological endowment for language to an evolutionarily plausible core while saving the data of current linguistics: providing a roadmap for reconstituting within a lexicon-free syntax the descriptive and explanatory results of linguistics over linguistic universals and language typologies. This impressive and compelling volume should foster informed dialog across the disciplines toward the goal of understanding how the human brain manages language.' Centre for the Study of Language & Information Beyond Grammar: An Experience-Based Theory of Language
Book SynopsisDuring the last few years, a new approach to linguistic analysis has started to emerge. This approach, which has come to be known under various labels such as 'data-oriented parsing', 'corpus-based interpretation' and 'treebank grammar', assumes that human language comprehension and production works with representations of concrete past language experiences rather than with abstract grammatical rules. It operates by decomposing the given representations into fragments and recomposing those pieces to analyze (infinitely many) new utterances. This book shows how this general approach can apply to various kinds of linguistic representations. Experiments with this approach suggest that the productive units of natural language cannot be defined by a minimal set of rules or principles, but need to be defined by a large, redundant set of previously experienced structures. Bod argues that this outcome has important consequences for linguistic theory, leading to an entirely new view of the nature of linguistic competence.Trade Review'Bod develops a theory of human language based on linguistic experience. Instead of rules or principles, previously derived chunks of representations constitute the knowledge base for language use. With empirical rigor and compelling argumentation the author develops the theoretical foundations for his data-oriented approach and extends it to semantics and the processing of spoken dialogue. All computational linguists with a sincere interest in corpus-based methods should definitely read this well-written book. Theoretical linguists and psycholinguists will find it illuminating and thought-provoking.' Hans Uszkoreit, DFKI Saarbrüken and Saarland University'Beyond Grammar should be read by all theoretical linguists who feel intrigued or threatened by the renaissance of statistical natural language processing. Bod argues for the provocative thesis that knowledge of language should be understood not as a grammar, but as a 'statistical ensemble of language experience that changes slightly every time a new utterance is perceived or produced'. By building a conceptual theory that integrates formal language theory with statistical linguistics, he also shows why the coming statistical revolution need not put theoretical linguists out of business. This is a beautifully written, important, and accessible work.' Joan Bresnan, Stanford UniversityTable of Contents1. Introduction: what are the productive units of natural language?; 2. Book SynopsisThis book provides a simple but precise framework for describing complex predicates and related constructions, and applies it principally to the analysis of complex predicates in Romance, and certain serial verb constructions in Tariana and Miskitu. The authors argue for replacing the projection architecture of LFG with a notion of differential information spreading within a unified feature structure. Another important feature is the use of the conception of argument-structure in Chris Manning's Ergativity to facilitate the description of how complex predicates are assembled. In both of these aspects the result is a framework that preserves the descriptive parsimony of LFG while taking on key ideas from HPSG.Table of ContentsPreface; 1. Introduction; 2. Predicate composition; 3. Romance complex predicates; 4. Serial verb constructions; 5. Conclusions and prospects; A. Glue language semantics; B. Previous proposals; Bibliography.

Multilingual Matters Redoing Linguistic Worlds: Unmaking Gender
Book SynopsisLanguage and gender are interconnected, social and relational acts through which we constantly remake our worlds. But what happens when our ways of doing gender cannot be neatly categorized into traditional binary systems, including not only the social groupings of roles, practices and identities, but also the forms and structures through which we do language? This book brings together a broad range of scholars to explore the undoing and redoing of gender binaries in non-Anglophone communities and contexts, in and through their linguistic and social reimaginings. Each of the contributions to this book reflects on this ongoing change and its place in our everyday lives, including the ways that its outcomes are both contested and fluid. This volume represents an important step in scholarship in language and gender, one that stands to inform a public increasingly aware of these remakings and one that calls on all of us to stand in the tensions of our own humanity and look through it for how our languaging might ‘do’ imaginary worlds that are more equitable, more connected, and more just for us all.Trade ReviewAt a time when far-right politicians and TERF scholars are fundamentally threatening trans and non-binary people’s right to exist, this highly innovative edited collection offers an indispensable scholarly and political intervention illustrating the creative ways in which the gender binary is contested and reimagined. A must read! * Tommaso M. Milani, Pennsylvania State University, USA *Knisely and Russell have produced a timely collection, bringing to the fore speakers’ unmaking of limited and binary structures in language, and the remaking of inclusive interactions with the self and others. This volume is an exciting journey beyond the cis-only world, gifting the field with new and much-needed terminology, concepts and experiences. * Federica Formato, University of Brighton, UK *This book highlights the exclusionary reality that many trans and gender non-conforming people face when learning and using languages with grammatical gender. Addressing contexts both within and outside the classroom, the authors offer innovative and methodologically diverse approaches that effectively challenge the ongoing dominance of English in conversations about trans language. * Lal Zimman, University of California, Santa Barbara, USA *Table of ContentsFigures Tables Contributors Acknowledgments Series Editors' Preface Kris Aric Knisely and Eric Louis Russell: Introduction: Redoing Linguistic Worlds Part 1: Languagers and Genderers Chapter 1.
