Book SynopsisTrent E. Maxey documents how religion came to be seen as the "greatest problem" by the architects of the modern Japanese state. Maxey shows that in Meiji Japan, religion designated a cognitive and social pluralism that resisted direct state control. It also provided the state with a means to contain, regulate, and neutralize that plurality.

  • Princeton University Press Thermodynamics A Dynamical Systems Approach

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPlaces thermodynamics on a system-theoretic foundation so as to harmonize it with classical mechanics. This book suggests that many physicists and engineers who have developed the theory of thermodynamics seem to have forgotten that mathematics, when used rigorously, is the irrefutable pathway to truth.Trade ReviewWassim Haddad, Winner of the 2014 Pendray Aerospace Literature Award, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics "The mathematical approach taken by the authors, as originally initiated by C. Caratheodory on the advice of Max Born, results in a book that makes a fundamental contribution to the field. The main emphasis is on the notion of large-scale dynamical systems applied to the multitude of small objects contained in the macroscale description. Indeed, thermodynamics is the dynamics of an extremely large number of objects numbering on the order of Avogadro's number. That some definite results arise from that setting is the marvel of it all."--Gerard A. Maugin, IEEE Control Systems "This is an original theory with many attractive features and which captures the known statements from classical thermodynamics, avoiding at the same time imprecise formulations. The techniques are based on dynamical systems and control theory, which is unusual in the field, but the presentation is precise and well crafted."--Manuel Portilheiro, Mathematical ReviewsTable of ContentsPreface ix Chapter 1: Introduction 1 1.1 An Overview of Thermodynamics 1 1.2 System Thermodynamics 11 1.3 A Brief Outline of the Monograph 14 Chapter 2: Dynamical System Theory 17 2.1 Notation, Definitions, and Mathematical Preliminaries 17 2.2 Stability Theory for Nonnegative Dynamical Systems 20 2.3 Reversibility, Irreversibility, Recoverability, and Irrecoverability 27 2.4 Reversible Dynamical Systems, Volume-Preserving Flows, and Poincare Recurrence 34 Chapter 3: A Systems Foundation for Thermodynamics 45 3.1 Introduction 45 3.2 Conservation of Energy and the First Law of Thermodynamics 46 3.3 Entropy and the Second Law of Thermodynamics 55 3.4 Ectropy 72 3.5 Semistability, Energy Equipartition, Irreversibility, and the Arrow of Time 81 3.6 Entropy Increase and the Second Law of Thermodynamics 89 3.7 Interconnections of Thermodynamic Systems 91 3.8 Monotonicity of System Energies in Thermodynamic Processes 98 Chapter 4: Temperature Equipartition and the Kinetic Theory of Gases 103 4.1 Semistability and Temperature Equipartition 103 4.2 Boltzmann Thermodynamics 110 Chapter 5: Work, Heat, and the Carnot Cycle 115 5.1 On the Equivalence of Work and Heat: The First Law Revisited 115 5.2 The Carnot Cycle and the Second Law of Thermodynamics 126 Chapter 6: Thermodynamic Systems with Linear Energy Exchange 131 6.1 Linear Thermodynamic System Models 131 6.2 Semistability and Energy Equipartition in Linear Thermodynamic Models 136 Chapter 7: Continuum Thermodynamics 141 7.1 Conservation Laws in Continuum Thermodynamics 141 7.2 Entropy and Ectropy for Continuum Thermodynamics 148 7.3 Semistability and Energy Equipartition in Continuum Thermo-dynamics 160 Chapter 8: Conclusion 169 Bibliography 175 Index 185

  • Harvard University Press Our American Israel

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHow did a Jewish state come to resonate profoundly with Americans in the twentieth century? Since WWII, Israel’s identity has been entangled with America’s belief in its own exceptionalism. Turning a critical eye on the two nations’ turbulent history together, Amy Kaplan unearths the roots of controversies that may well divide them in the future.Trade ReviewFascinating…could hardly be more timely. -- Andrew Bacevich * The Spectator *Our American Israel is a tour de force, examining the profound ties that bind America and Israel together. No other book goes so deeply into American culture and intellectual life to explain the strength of the bond between the two countries. This book will be welcomed by those searching for a deeper and more intelligent analysis of the American-Israeli-Palestinian conundrum than is currently available. -- Rashid Khalidi, author of Brokers of Deceit: How the U.S. Has Undermined Peace in the Middle EastKeen analysis…Kaplan’s approach is so fresh, her command of the sources so solid, and her prose so engaging that both casual readers and experts will find new insights in the book. -- Walter Russell Mead * Foreign Affairs *Our American Israel is an incisive, urgently necessary excavation of the cultural meanings of the U.S.-Israeli relationship by one of the most perceptive cultural historians of the United States. It sheds powerful light on a troubled past and disturbing present, revealing the ways that narratives of similarity and connection were wielded against the demands of human rights and social justice. -- Paul A. Kramer, author of The Blood of Government: Race, Empire, the United States, and the PhilippinesKaplan’s tour of literature and film shows how common understandings of Israel and the U.S. have been shaped—and distorted, as with the Trump administration’s relocation of the American embassy to Jerusalem. A useful reading of history and politics in the light of mythmaking and media. * Kirkus Reviews *Kaplan often confronts us with facts of history that are sometimes awkward and uncomfortable…But no American who loves and supports Israel can afford to ignore the arguments that she makes. * Jewish Journal *Shows how the special relationship between Israel and the US (or even its Jewish population) was never preordained or inevitable. Rather, like any international relationship, it has been molded by a series of cultural and political mediations. In the tradition of critical scholarship Kaplan uncovers the constructedness of US approaches to the State of Israel and so contributes much to our understanding of it…Kaplan’s study is of immense importance to anyone who wishes to study Israel in American culture in the past, present, or future. -- David Hadar * American Literary History *

  • Earthquake and Volcano Deformation

Princeton University Press Earthquake and Volcano Deformation

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEarthquake and Volcano Deformation is the first textbook to present the mechanical models of earthquake and volcanic processes, emphasizing earth-surface deformations that can be compared with observations from Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, Interferometric Radar (InSAR), and borehole strain- and tiltmeters. Paul Segall provides the physical and mathematical fundamentals for the models used to interpret deformation measurements near active faults and volcanic centers.Segall highlights analytical methods of continuum mechanics applied to problems of active crustal deformation. Topics include elastic dislocation theory in homogeneous and layered half-spaces, crack models of faults and planar intrusions, elastic fields due to pressurized spherical and ellipsoidal magma chambers, time-dependent deformation resulting from faulting in an elastic layer overlying a viscoelastic half-space and related earthquake cycle models, poroelastic effects due to faulting and magma chamber inflation in a fluid-saturated crust, and the effects of gravity on deformation. He also explains changes in the gravitational field due to faulting and magmatic intrusion, effects of irregular surface topography and earth curvature, and modern concepts in rate- and state-dependent fault friction. This textbook presents sample calculations and compares model predictions against field data from seismic and volcanic settings from around the world.Earthquake and Volcano Deformation requires working knowledge of stress and strain, and advanced calculus. It is appropriate for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in geophysics, geology, and engineering.Professors: A supplementary Instructor''s Manual is available for this book. It is restricted to teachers using the text in courses. For information on how to obtain a copy, refer to: https://press.princeton.edu/class_use/solutions.htmlTrade Review"The book is the first to focus on the models used to relate subsurface fault and magma motion to surface deformation. Based on a course taught by the author at Stanford University at the upper undergraduate to graduate level, the book has been more than a decade in the making. For years, faculty at various institutions (myself included) have begged for incomplete drafts of the manuscript to use as a reference when teaching, so it is satisfying to see the complete work now available to all. It is clearly written and the content is logically presented, as one might expect from material that has been taught to hundreds of students by an excellent teacher... In summary, this is a timely and well-written book that introduces the mathematical tools needed to interpret the onslaught of new surface-deformation data. To find the same material covered in this textbook, a scientist would have to dig through hundreds of scientific papers and books, and even then would not find the topics as clearly presented or accompanied by new advances in the field."--Nature Geoscience "This excellent advanced textbook will most positively impact graduate education and basic and applied research into the science of crustal deformation."--ChoiceTable of ContentsPreface xi Acknowledgments xv Origins xvii Chapter 1: Deformation, Stress, and Conservation Laws 1 1.1 Strain 2 1.1.1 Strains in Curvilinear Coordinates 7 Book SynopsisOffers readers a voyage to the world of sea creatures, with a look at their habitats, their beauty and, yes, even their sex lives. This title takes us to oceans across the world to experience the lives of their inhabitants, from the horribly grotesque to the exquisitely beautiful.Trade Review"Eugene H. Kaplan has been teaching marine biology for half a century, and shares his experience of bringing the subject alive... Each of the 31 chapters opens with either one of Kaplan's own memoirs or a scenario from his imagination, before exploring the marine biology behind the tale... [T]he entertainment seldom flags. Kaplan's book conveys the breadth and excitement of an education in marine biology... [T]here is no stronger recommendation that I could make."--Jon Copley, Nature "Eugene H. Kaplan has a well-developed sense of humor, delving amusingly yet seriously into such topics as the sex life of squids ... and the future of sea horses."--Martin Levin, Toronto Globe and Mail "With vivid writing, a sense of humor and truly fascinating creatures to work with, Kaplan creates a feel for the teeming sea and rouses a sense of wonder in his readers. Line drawings in each chapter illustrate the creatures and their life cycles. This is a book for people with even a small bit of curiosity about the hidden world around them."--Lynn Harnett, Portsmouth Herald "From this collection of short stories, a theme emerges. Kaplan guides readers to appreciate the remarkably diverse web of life that has evolved and continues to evolve in an ever-changing ocean environment... Sensuous Seas informs and challenges, one fascinating tale after another."--Fred Bortz, Arkansas Democrat Gazette "Eugene Kaplan's thirty-one chapters deliver concise and beautifully illustrated accounts of life-form specialization, symbiotic survival techniques, and unique mating rituals... Kaplan gives us the immense diversity of marine life, distinctively expressed in form, coloration, habitat (water, sand, rock, coral), and life patterns (aggressive or passive, independent or parasitic), opening up a universe."--Peter Skinner, ForeWord "This book spells out in evocative yet scientifically accurate ways, the mysteries, the drama, the variations, yes even the day-to-day lives of organisms in the sea... [It presents] a new world of possibilities about how to hook your students into studying the fascinating stories that organisms in the sea have to offer as well as some of the questions for which there are as yet no answers."--American Biology Teacher "All combined, Kaplan's writing appeals to the story lover, the scientist and anyone who just wants to know how crabs get it on."--Seattle Magazine "Sensuous Seas contains a wealth of stimulating and digestible information. This book is also beautifully produced and will be an attractive asset to any marine library."--Tim Ecott, Aquatic Mammals "Kaplan offers readers an irresistibly irreverent voyage through the world of sea creatures... It provides the student with a comprehensive grammar of classical Chinese with clear and readable explanations in both English and modern Chinese. By fully utilizing both languages in one text, the authors of this reader have created a teaching tool that will have wide appeal and applicability. The translations are accurate and felicitous."--Catherine Swatek, University of British Columbia Praise for Classical Chinese: "This reader addresses a huge gap in Chinese language textbook offerings--that is, a basic introduction to classical Chinese. It is far superior to previous such works: the texts reflect a more logical progression from simple structures to more complex ones, and the grammatical explanations are more structured and more detailed. The book also does an excellent job of reinforcing past patterns, and further serves as an introduction to Chinese culture and literature."--Kimberly Besio, Colby CollegeTable of ContentsMap 1: The Spring and Autumn Period iv Map 2: The Warring States Period v A Brief Chronology of China vi Foreword vii Acknowledgements x Bilingual Table of Contents xi Errata to the Texts xv A Quote from Laozi 1 Reading Texts 2 Appendixes: 182 1 List of Exercises 182 2 Exercises 183 3 Source of Text Selections 280 4 A Short List of Grammatical References 282

Book SynopsisUnderstand and respond to a changing coastline with this comprehensive reference Coastal engineering concerns society's interactions with coastlines and relates, for example, to coastal flooding, beach erosion, seawalls and breakwaters, and the design of marinas. As climate change drives sea level rise, coastal engineering is critical in responding to increased coastal flooding and receding shorelines. The need to develop coastal infrastructure while minimizing environmental impacts makes this a vital field. An Introduction to Coastal Engineering offers a comprehensive overview of this subject, designed to bridge existing gaps in the general civil engineering literature. Covering all major aspects of coastal engineering, including ocean wave behaviour, structures, sediments, mixing processes, and modelling, the book emphasizes practical solutions and applications for students and practicing engineers alike. Thorough and rigorous, yet highly readable, the book is a must-own tool for dev

  • The Form of Cities

John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Form of Cities

Book SynopsisThe Form of Cities offers readers a considered theoretical introduction to the art of designing cities. Demonstrates that cities are replete with symbolic values, collective memory, association and conflict. Proposes a new theoretical understanding of urban design, based in political economy. Demonstrates different ways of conceptualising the city, whether through aesthetics or the prism of gender, for example. Written in an engaging and jargon-free style, but retains a sophisticated interpretative edge. Complements Designing Cities by the same author (Blackwell, 2003). Trade Review‘The Form of Cities is an important critique and synthesis of recent thinking about urban design … a powerful analysis of the emergence, logic, and political meaning of the built environment in given historical contexts.’ Allen J. Scott, Distinguished Professor of Public Policy and Geography, UCLA ‘A major achievement in the radical spirit of Manuel Castells’ and Mike Davis’ writings. Cuthbert repositions urban design theory … to reveal the bedrock systems of material and symbolic production shaping modern cities.’ Chris Abel, Architectural critic and author of Architecture, Technology, Process and Architecture and Identity ‘Truly an impressive piece of work. … This book will become seminal not only for urban design students and practitioners, and those engaged in the study and practice of urban policy-making and planning, but also for students of urban geography and political science.’ Harry T. Dimitriou, Bartlett Professor of Planning Studies, UCL "[Cuthbert] sets out not only to make the professional case for urban design but also the disciplinary case. What ensues is an immense and far-reaching catalog of ideas that in many ways is a tour de force." Journal of Regional ScienceTable of ContentsList of Figures List of Tables. Preface. • Territory

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Territory

Book SynopsisThis short introduction conveys the complexities associated with the term territory in a clear and accessible manner. It surveys the field and brings theory to ground in the case of Palestine. A clear and accessible introduction to the complexities associated with the term territory. Provides an interdisciplinary survey of the many strands of research in the field. Addresses specific areas including interpretations of territorial structures; the relationship between territoriality and scale; the validity and fluidity of territory; and the practical, social processes associated with territorial re-configurations. Stresses that our understanding of territory is inseparable from our understanding of power. Uses Israel/Palestine as an extended illustrative case study. The author's strong legal and geographical background gives the work an authoritative perspective. Trade Review"This book is a brilliant, accessible excursion through the many dimensions of a key aspect of social space. Delaney weaves together provocative illustrations, detailed case studies, and an original theoretical synthesis in order to track the many ways in which territory structures our everyday lives. Thanks to Delaney’s lucid writing style and his broad, interdisciplinary expertise, the book will be a tremendously useful resource for students at all levels." --Neil Brenner, New York University "Dividing ourselves up into territories is a pervasive but remarkably ill-understood feature of human life. This book succinctly and expertly explores why territory matters and surveys the ways in which we can better understand it." --John Agnew, University of California, Los AngelesTable of ContentsList of Illustrations.
