    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA new collection of the seminal writings of America's first naturalist and the founder of the modern conservation movement.AN EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY ORIGINAL.This volume of John Muir's selected writings chronicles the key turning points in his life and study of the American wilderness. The Story of My Boyhood and Youth is Muir's account of his childhood on a Wisconsin farm, where his interest in nature was first piqued; in The Mountains of California, The Yosemite, and Travels in Alaska, we follow him on long journeys into stunning mountain ranges and valleys, where he records native flora and fauna and finds proof of his theories of the effect of glaciers on landscape formation. These four full-length works--along with a selection of important essays--helped galvanize American naturalists, and led to the founding of the Sierra Club and several national parks. In these pages, written with meticulous thoroughness and an impassioned lyricism, we witness Muir's awakening to the incredible beauty of our planet, and the honing of an eye turned as acutely toward the scientific as the spiritual.

  • Redundant Masculinities

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisRedundant Masculinities? investigates the links between the so-called ''crisis of masculinity'' and contemporary changes in the labour market through the lives of young working class men. Allows the voices of poorly-educated young men to be heard. Looks at how the labour market is changing. Emphasises the social construction of gender and racial identities. Dispels popular myths about the crisis in masculinity. Trade Review"This book will appeal to a wide audience. It so adroitly sums up the state of play in a number of arenas: the contemporary UK economy and the future of work, current debates about gender and identity, the “crisis” of masculinity, and the emerging “problem” of white, working-class boys floundering to hold down jobs and identities that are increasingly ‘redundant’." --Rosemary Pringle, Professor of Sociology, University of Southampton, UK "Much has been written about the so-called 'crisis of masculinity' but rarely have its contours been charted in such as precise way and with such clear empathy for those at its cutting edge." --Peter Jackson, University of Sheffield, UK "I recommend , and sincerely hope, that this book is widely read, inside and outside academia." (Enviroment and Planning D: Society and Space) "Linda McDowell has produced a highly readable and accessible book, packed with rich and original empirical data, and written with a lightness of touch that belies the complexity of the theoretical debates pulled together within it. Redundant Masculinities combines an impressive synthesis of contemporary theoretical debates and perspectives, with a thorough empirical methodology to produce a first-class piece of applied research." (Work, Employment and Society) "McDowell offers a groundbreaking and often intensely sympathetic portrait of the ruptures and fragmentations of white, working class male hegemony under neoliberalism. Through deft use of narrative and analysis, she humanizes masculinity and masculine development in a manner heretofore rarely seen in sociological research." Book SynopsisThe book is an analysis of cultural, social as well as political economic expressions of neoliberalization and argues for an appreciation of the relational geographies of neoliberalization. In-depth empirical research spanning a variety of world regions A range of topics including homelessness, comparative politics, economic development and social policy Reviews how neoliberalism is enacted as a way to highlight the complexity and contingency of this economic model Engages in debates within anthropology, gender studies, geography, health studies, international studies, planning, political science and sociology Trade Review“Neoliberalism is a word that can easily come to mean everything and so nothing. And yet the process and relations of ‘neoliberalization’ are far more significant than either of these meanings. By focusing on places in which neoliberalization is shaped and experienced, and on critical analyses of the processes and relations of which it is constituted, this book reveals its profound importance.” Roger Lee, Queen Mary, University of London “This excellent collection of essays brings substance to processes of neoliberalization and their impacts in different parts of the globe, from Argentina to Canada, Nepal to China, and New Zealand to Japan. It illuminates, from diverse intellectual and disciplinary traditions, the complexity and contingency of neoliberalisms through a detailed analysis of economic and political institutions, people, places, and networks involved in their (re)production and dissemination. This needs to be understood if we are to gain a better theorized account of concrete historical realities and gain leverage for alternative political directions.” Helga Leitner, University of MinnesotaTable of ContentsList of Figures. • How To Think About Cities

John Wiley and Sons Ltd How To Think About Cities

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisCities are raucous, cacophonous, and complex. Many dimensions of life play out and conflict across cities’ intricate landscapes, be they political, cultural, economic, or social. Urban policy makers and analysts often attempt to “cut through the noise” of urban disagreement by emphasizing a dominant lens for understanding the key, central logic of the city. How To Think About Cities sees this tendency to selective vision as misleading and ultimately unjust: cities are many things at once to different people and communities. This book describes the various ways of seeing the functions and landscapes of the city as place frames, and the constant process of negotiating which place frames best explain the city as place-making. Martin and Pierce call for an explicitly hybrid perspective that shifts between many different frames for making sense of cities. This approach highlights how any given stance opens up some lines of inquiry and understanding while closing off others. Thinking of cities as sites of contested perspectives promotes a synthetic approach to urban analysis that emphasizes difference and political possibility. This mosaic view of the city will be a welcome read for those within urban studies, geography, and social sciences exploring the many faces of urban life.Trade Review“We need to embrace cities in all their diversity and complexity while realizing that we can never truly grasp the infinitely radical plurality of urbanism. This is the core of Martin and Pierce’s captivating methodological narrative of place-framing as an analytical and political strategy for the urban age. A delightful book!”Elvin Wyly, University of British Columbia“This book will change how you think about cities and the urban. Martin and Pierce advance place-framing as a deeply compelling approach to studying cities. They draw from classical texts and concepts in urban studies and allied fields to offer a new and highly accessible way to untangle the messiness of the city.”Katherine Hankins, Georgia State University “In How to Think About Cities, Martin and Pierce provide a valuable contribution in reorienting urban analysis in a promising and productive direction. The book should occupy a prominent place in the reading list of every urban scholar, whether novice or established.”Robert W. Lake, Journal of Urban AffairsTable of Contents1. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Over Land and Sea: Migration from Antiquity to

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHuman history has always been marked by the mobility of people and populations, from the earliest movement of human beings out of Africa to the flows of migrants and refugees today. While mobility is intrinsic to human nature, migration is not always voluntary: it can be the result of free choice, but it can also be forced, in different ways and to varying degrees. In this book, Massimo Livi-Bacci examines migrations past and present with reference to the degree of free choice behind them. The degree can be minimal, as when migration is compelled by war, natural disaster or the actions of a tyrant, but in other cases the decision to migrate can be fully voluntary and deliberate, as when individuals and groups weigh up their options and decide whether to move. Between these two poles there is a continuum of different situations, with gradually increasing or decreasing degrees of freedom and choice. Livi-Bacci explores these variations by focusing on fifteen stories of migration from Antiquity to the present day, ranging from the Greek colonization of the Eastern Mediterranean in the Ancient world to the great migration of millions of people from Europe to the Americas in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Taken together, these stories of human movement shed fresh light on the millennia-long history of migration and its motivations, causes and consequences.Trade Review‘A wide-ranging, erudite and original meditation on the extraordinary and ordinary act of human migration.

Table of ContentsÜberblick.- Minerale.- Magmatische Gesteine.- Metamorphe Gesteine.- Sedimentgesteine.- Fossilien & Paläoökologie.

Book SynopsisWestern Sorkapp Land is a very remote and diverse region, which is representative of the European Arctic. This book describes the transformation of the environment and landscape of Western Sorkapp Land based on research data collected by Jagiellonian University scientific expeditions in the period 1980-1986 and 2008. Western Sorkapp Land has been experiencing dramatic natural changes such as glacial recession, the emergence of new landforms and Quaternary deposits as well as changes in the water drainage and network due to global warming. The establishment of South Spitsbergen National Park has led to a regeneration of the local reindeer herd and consequently the overgrazing of the local tundra resulting in altered plant communities. The transformation of Western Sorkapp Land will continue and its potential directions are outlined in the book.

MIT Press Ltd A Just Transition for All

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy the energy transition must be more than a fuel source replacement, and how we can seize the opportunity of the transition to build a more just future for all.To meet the greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed to stave off the worst impacts of climate change, a transition away from fossil fuels must occur, as quickly as possible. But there are many unknowns when it comes to moving from theory to implementation for such a large-scale energy transition, not least regarding the social impact. In A Just Transition for All, J. Mijin Cha?a seasoned climate policy researcher who also works with advocacy organizations and unions?offers a comprehensive analysis of how we can enact transformational changes that meaningfully improve people?s lives. Cha provides a novel governance framework called the Four+ Pillars, formulated from original research to provide a way to move from theory to practice. The Pillars framework includes a novel analysis that guides readers in understanding how to formulate effective just transition policies, what makes them just or unjust, and, similarly, what makes transition just and unjust. The framework also combines theoretical discussions with original empirical research and provides insights into perceptions of just transition. Grounded in real-world perspectives that make the case for policies that advance the interests of all, not just of fossil fuel workers, Cha charts the path forward to an equitable and sustainable future that no longer depends on fossil fuels.

  • The Unthinkable Revolution in Iran

Harvard University Press The Unthinkable Revolution in Iran

Book SynopsisA 1978 CIA analysis firmly concluded that the shah of Iran would remain on the throne for the foreseeable future. One hundred days later the shah was overthrown by a popular revolution. The CIA was not alone in its myopia, as Kurzman reveals; Iranians themselves considered a revolution inconceivable until it actually occurred.Trade ReviewIn the world of politics, a true revolution is the perfect storm--rare and uniquely destructive. Can the social scientist comprehend and perhaps even predict the course of such a complex phenomenon? Charles Kurzman takes a cool, dispassionate look at the many explanations of the Iranian revolution and finds them inadequate. Drawing on an impressive range of original research, he argues that mass revolutionary movements become viable suddenly--and unpredictably--as perceptions of potential success acquire popular acceptance. This book is a major addition to the literature on the Iranian revolution--and revolution in general. -- Gary Sick, former member of the National Security Council staff, and Adjunct Professor of International Affairs at Columbia UniversitySociologist Kurzman addresses five familiar sets of explanations about why the Iranian revolution took place--political, organizational, cultural, economic, and military arguments--and finds each valuable but flawed, offering instead an 'anti-explanation' that foregrounds anomaly and characterizes the revolutionary moment as confusing, unstable, and as unpredictable for participants as it is for outside observers. Despite this, optimism is in order; there is, after all, exciting potential in moments in which the unthinkable suddenly becomes thinkable. -- Brendan Driscoll * Booklist *When Elias Canetti, the Nobel-prize winning theorist, spoke of a people's 'propensity to incendiarism,' he had in mind one of the most dangerous traits of mass gatherings: their potential for unpredictable combustibility. Iran's Islamic revolution, like many other uprisings, was a consummate instance of this, Kurzman argues, and he continues in Canetti's tradition by using the Shah's overthrow to engage in his own meditation on crowds and power. Kurzman's investigation propelled him to the Islamic republic, where he conducted countless interviews, in an attempt to chart the eddies and undercurrents of one of the world's most complex and sudden social upheavals...The result is a thought-provoking combination of journalism and analysis that offers an atypical juxtaposition of voices: shopkeepers, lawyers and high school students share their views on what happened, as do academics and policymakers. * Publishers Weekly *[Kurzman's] book examines the Islamic revolution in the light of social sciences. It is a valuable insight into what he considers one of the most far-reaching events of the 20th century. -- Shusha Guppy * Times Higher Education Supplement *Charles Kurzman has presented a meticulous anatomy of the Iranian revolution and has dexterously treated the anomalies usually inherent in revolutions...The author shifts through revolution theories and shows with pages and pages of documentation and references how they related to the Iranian revolution or missed it. Kurzman's opus is certainly a valuable contribution to the historiography and sociological analysis of an important revolution of our age that led to a large scale politicization of Islam in those parts of the world where this religion prevailed. -- Syfi Tashan * Journal of Third Word Studies *Charles Kurzman has produced the definitive account of the Islamic Revolution. No serious historian can write about these events without consulting his 10-page essay on available source material in The Unthinkable Revolution in Iran. * Middle East Quarterly *

Book SynopsisA participant in the Tiananmen Square movement, Wang Hui is also editor of the most important intellectual journal in contemporary China. He argues that the features of contemporary China are elements of the new global order as a whole in which considerations of economic growth and development have trumped democracy and social justice.Trade ReviewThis is the most radical, tough-minded, and sustained analysis of 1989 and all that has followed that I have read. The punchy prose style gives the book an urgent, even strident, edge that makes it a pleasure to read. You feel yourself in the presence of a strong mind, as well as someone who cares deeply about the issues at stake here - issues of social inequality, social injustice, and a hegemonic world order committed to perpetuating both. -- Tim Brook, University of TorontoThe contents of this book are intelligent and significant. Brought together they will make available to English readers a substantial selection of one of China's most influential public scholars today. Wang Hui is very important in contemporary Chinese intellectual life both for his numerous (and controversial) writings but also for his role as an editor of Dushu ['Reading'], China's most popular general intellectual journal. -- Tim Cheek, University of British ColumbiaThis is an incisive, brilliant, always challenging analysis of China's intellectual landscape in the 1990s with the asserted triumph of "neo-liberalism" in the political economy over the reformist social movement of the late 1980s that culminated in Tiananmen. The discussion of the 1989 movement (and indeed later developments in economics and politics) in a global context is compelling and, at this level of analysis, unique among studies on the events of that difficult year. The analysis of debates of the '90s shows (at least to my mind) how problematic has been any effort to re-think, from the bottom up, the intellectual foundations of the modern Chinese state and indeed of "modernity" itself in China. -- William C. Kirby, Harvard UniversityWang Hui, one of China's preeminent intellectuals, makes an impassioned critique of China's much heralded post-Mao economic reforms, which he condemns for causing economic inequalities, social polarization, and political corruption. The essays in China's New Order convey the sense of moral concern and historic perspective of Wang Hui's literati ancestors, at the same time that they reveal the variety and complexity of China's present-day intellectual and political debates. -- Merle Goldman, Boston UniversityUnlike most other contemporary critics of China's reforms, Mr. Wang does not limit himself to economics. He dissects the big picture, calling on reformers to include culture, values and democratic governance in their assessments of success and failure. Such a critique is long overdue...Mr. Wang has become one of the first indigenous voices to critique China's 'economic miracle' fully and publicly and to find it a deficient remedy for the failures of socialism. -- Orville Schell * New York Times *The essential arguments are comprehensible and stimulating for Chinese intellectuals as well as for those Westerners who insist that post-Mao China is roaring down the right track, that money pushes aside the old political stupidities, and economic progress leads eventually to democracy. These are the assumptions Wang seeks to rebut and his rebuttal will be uncomfortable reading for those who see capitalism as a moral driving force as well as an enriching one. -- Jonathan Mirsky * Far Eastern Economic Review *This book offers a powerful analysis of China and the transformations it has experienced since 1989. Wang Hui offers an insiders knowledge of economics, politics, civilisation, and Western critical theory. A participant in the Tianamen Square movement, he is also the editor of the most important intellectual journal in contemporary China. Wang Hui argues that the features of China today are elements of the new global order as a whole in which considerations of economic growth and development have trumped every other concern, particularly those of democracy and social justice. The plea at the heart of the book is for economic and social justice and an indictment of the corruption caused by the explosion of 'market forces.' * The Asian Art Newspaper *Wang's problem comes when Westerners and Chinese alike misread reform as apologia for the past. Socialism may be lost, he reminds us, but its reason for being will remain unless China and the rest of the world can protect against the laissez-faire injustices inherent to global capital. -- Hua Hsu * Village Voice *Table of ContentsPreface Introduction by Theodore Huters The 1989 Social Movement and the Historical Roots of China's

Book SynopsisDrawing on the thought of canonical figures Martin R. Delany and W. E. B. Du Bois, Shelby provides the first extended philosophical defense of black political solidarity. He argues that we can reject a biological idea of race and agree with many criticisms of identity politics yet still view black political solidarity as a needed emancipatory tool.Trade ReviewShelby's aim is to show that one can achieve a robust form of black solidarity without a commitment to black identity. He identifies robust solidarity as entailing: identification between group members, shared values or goals, group loyalty and mutual trust. I think the arguments that he offers that all these elements of robust solidarity are possible without the sort of distinctive black identity required by collective identity theory are compelling. This is important, because many people take it for granted that the pursuit of solidarity entails the need for identity. In articulating the necessary analytic distinctions, Shelby makes the kind of contribution that I believe is characteristic of the most useful philosophical interventions in African American studies (and in many other fields): he shows that there is conceptual space for more options than the current debate presupposes. -- K. Anthony Appiah, author of The Ethics of IdentityAs an interdisciplinary enterprise, African-American studies is thriving, but philosophy's contribution has until recently been next to non-existent. The field's image is still an overwhelmingly "white" one--a discipline that has nothing to say about the specific concerns of blacks. Tommie Shelby's book, addressing as it does a long-standing set of issues in the black tradition, is a welcome proof of the subject's relevance and importance for African-American interests. Employing the apparatus of contemporary analytic philosophy with rigor, sophistication, and the use of a remarkable range of sources, he sets out to defend a qualified version of the classic black nationalist thesis that a distinctive "black" politics predicated on black solidarity is morally and politically justifiable. Not only does he succeed splendidly in this task, but he provides in the process a model of how the "unwhitening" of philosophy can eventually be achieved. -- Charles W. Mills, author of The Racial ContractShelby dissects the history of black political thought from W.E.B. Du Bois to Malcolm X in order to arrive at a new political philosophy that takes black solidarity as its foundation...Shelby finds merits and flaws in almost every political theory he discusses, leading to an evenhanded, meticulously thought-out argument that builds upon the best elements of black political thought. * Publishers Weekly *A philosophical defense of black political solidarity as a tool for defeating racism, eliminating racial inequality and improving opportunities for those racialized as 'black.' -- Sandra L. Jamison * Black Issues Book Review *Shelby, a rising star who teaches African-American studies at Harvard, argues for black solidarity without black racial identity. If that seems paradoxical at first blush, it won't after you have read this account of black political thought from W.E.B. Du Bois to Malcolm X. -- Jim Holt * New York Magazine *It isn't easy being a philosopher committed to making critical reflections on African-American identity. Those about whom you write have little time for abstractions and even less patience with criticism. The philosophers for whom you write often refuse to take seriously a subject so outlandishly removed from all that has preoccupied them for the past two and a half millenniums. And the experience upon which you reflect is largely bereft of earlier models to build upon. Only a few intrepid souls have plowed this virgin intellectual field. Add to them now Tommie Shelby, a sparkling new talent with all the boldness and intellectual self-assurance necessary for such an effort...Although black Americans have led the way in practical matters, insightful theoretical reflections on identity politics are still wanting. Shelby's We Who Are Dark is respectful of such politics, but severely critical as well. His book contests the movement's central claims at a level of sociophilosophical sophistication that one rarely encounters. -- Orlando Patterson * New York Times Book Review *From his training in political philosophy, Shelby argues that there is a need for black political solidarity as a continuing tool of emancipation. Drawing on the ideas of Martin Delaney, W. E. B. DuBois, Malcolm X, Black Power, and black cultural nationalism, Shelby concludes that the transcending unifying factor now is the "pragmatic nationalist conception of political solidarity." This provocative, stimulating, and readable book can offer a fresh understanding of the virtue of black solidarity and introduce readers to the thinking ways of philosophers. -- J. H. Smith * Choice *On what grounds--and to what ends--are marginalized or oppressed social groups constituted as a group? Specifically, how should those who identify as black in the present-day United States conceive of their sense of solidarity, and what should be the guiding norms of such conception? Tommie Shelby's We Who Are Dark offers a lucid and rigorous treatment of these questions. His argument rests on two initial assumptions: one, that there is indeed a demonstrable sense of solidarity--that is, of "we-ness"--among those who identify as black in North America, and two, that identifying and/or being identified as black in North America is still the basis for continued socio-economic and political oppression, marginalization, and exclusion. The question that follows from these assumptions is whether and how black solidarity could be instrumental in resisting and overcoming such oppression, marginalization, and exclusion...A brief summary such as this fails to do justice to the scope, depth, and elegance of Shelby's argumentation throughout his book. We Who Are Dark makes an important contribution to the field of African-American Studies in particular and political philosophy in general. The sympathetic yet incisive analysis of the problematic aims and assumptions that inform classical nationalism and identity politics is likely to find an audience both within and beyond the circle of scholars with a specific interest in theorizing black identity. Moreover, while Shelby writes from within the dual traditions of mainstream Anglophone philosophy and African-American studies, and constantly enters into dialogue with thinkers from both traditions, he remains an original voice. His thoughtful engagement with thinkers such as Du Bois, Garvey, Delaney, et al, does not merely re-tread the conceptual pathways laid down by them, but mines their work for unacknowledged contradictions and hidden digressions. Despite aligning himself with Rawlsian political liberalism, his book is much more than merely a rehashed version of Rawls. His argument for solidarity for the sake of justice rather than for the sake of maintaining an essential ideal of blackness deserves consideration in its own right. -- Vasti Roodt * Ethical Perspectives *Shelby interprets Black nationalist thinking in six elegant, novel chapters...A progressive notion of Black political solidarity in the post-civil rights era has to come to grips with the unique challenges facing us today. For this reason, We Who Are Dark must be required reading for anyone pragmatically concerned with the future of the souls of Black folk, the souls of a people. -- Neil Roberts * Souls *The intellectual and strategic moorings of contemporary black political solidarity are increasingly unstable. As the political memory of the race-specific Civil Rights movement fades further into history, intraracial differences that have always existed, such as gender, religion, sexuality, multiracial identification, immigration, region, cultural affiliation, political ideology, and generation, are being highlighted by race scholars from a variety of fields as reasons for rethinking race-based political cohesion. Tommie Shelby acknowledges all of these internal pressures, but sees the widening gap between poor and more affluent blacks as the intraracial fissure that most threatens political cohesion among today’s African Americans. From this sociological premise, Shelby sets out to articulate a “progressive,” philosophically sound basis for black political organization that appeals both to the class interests of poor and working-class blacks and to those of middleand upper-class blacks. By “progressive,” Shelby means a recognition that basic social injustices linger, and can and should be corrected through state intervention and/or collective political action. -- Hawley Fogg-Davis * Perspectives on Politics *An elegant, superb, and timely little book...It immediately secures Shelby’s place among the most significant thinkers working at the interface of philosophy and black studies. This groundbreaking work enlarges the field, rethinking our ideas on a variety of matters heretofore understudied but now readied for philosophical analysis...Shelby is of the generation for whom black power was their parents’ idea. They can face it with fresh eyes as young intellectuals looking back on received opinion, and here Shelby subjects black nationalism (BN) to searching examination and sometimes withering criticism, even while wanting to believe and defend it by isolating what he sees as its central and strongest claims...Shelby manages to find (or, perhaps, to conjure) the little-noticed liberal hidden within a variety of militant black activists, orators, and authors. Throughout, his tone and style are analytic, measured, soberly realistic, and fair-minded...I think the ultimate value in Shelby’s indispensable book may be to help remind us (perhaps unintentionally) that what we mainly need in combating continuing racial injustices against African Americans is a firmer and more clearheaded commitment to justice, not to race or blackness or a supposed nation of African America. -- J. Book SynopsisThis book makes the bold claim that intellectual sophistication was born worldwide during the middle centuries of the first millennium bce. From Axial Age thinkers we inherited a sense of the world as a place not just to experience but to investigate, envision, and alter. A variety of utopian visions emerged and led to both reform and repression.Trade ReviewWith eighteen leading multidisciplinary scholars, this volume covers enormous ground in the transformative beginnings for civilizations that shared cultural origins in the mid-first millennium BC in Europe and Asia. Extending the insight of existential philosopher Karl Jaspers regarding the 'Axial Age' and its later evolution to 'multiple modernities,' The Axial Age and Its Consequences, superbly edited by Hans Joas and Robert Bellah, is a must-read for contemporary comparative-historical sociological analyses in our own global age. -- Edward A. Book SynopsisAround 1500 A.D., an African farmer planted a maize seed imported from the New World. That act set in motion the remarkable saga of one of the world’s most influential crops. This compelling history offers insight into the profound influence of maize on African culture, health, technological innovation, and the future of the world’s food supply.Trade ReviewMcCann's book is as amazing as its title - the botanical properties of the cultigen itself (clearly delineated for the botanically challenged), the continent's unique modern dependence on the crop, the complicated and varied political and economic histories of how it came to be that way, how his Ethiopian research partner's local knowledge connected maize with malaria, and more. Maize and Grace is a readable, highly original, penetrating and comprehensive study of exemplary quality. -- Joseph Miller, University of VirginiaMaize transformed life in Africa, initially alleviating hunger during that crucial period before other crops ripened and now providing an increasingly important source of food, fodder, fuel and cash. McCann's eloquent narrative traces the path of this crop from its introduction as a snack into the land of Prester John to its present eminence throughout Africa. -- Andrew Spielman, School of Public Health, Harvard UniversityA captivating account of the introduction and spread of maize in Africa. This book provides excellent analysis of the legacy and opportunity of maize in addressing Africa's food crisis, as well as powerful insight into emerging social, cultural, health and environmental issues. -- Dr. Alemneh Dejene, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United NationsMaize and Grace offers a compelling counterpoint to the maize success story accepted by most agricultural economists. McCann sheds light on previously unexplored connections between the political, health, and food security dimensions of maize in Africa, some of which have major implications for development policy. -- T.S. Jayne, Michigan State UniversityA sweeping, deeply-learned, beautifully-written, and well-nigh comprehensive account of how maize changed Africa and how Africa changed maize. The level of botanical historical, cultural, and agricultural knowledge that underwrites this volume makes it a model of scholarship as meticulous as it is ambitious. Henceforth, none of my students will be released into the world without having read it. -- James C. Scott, Program in Agrarian Studies, Yale UniversityMaize and Grace shows how a New World crop contributed to the emergence of modern-day Africa. Some parts of Africa now have higher maize consumption per capita than Mexico and Guatemala, where the crop originated...Rather than describing sweeping historical currents, the book offers the reader a series of vignettes that provide opportunities to appreciate the paradoxes of maize development policy and to contemplate some enduring themes in agricultural history. -- Robert Tripp * Nature *McCann has written a fascinating social history of the propagation of maize throughout sub-Saharan Africa since it was first brought there from the New World, probably in the cargo of a slave ship, around 1500. He chronicles the ways in which maize has adapted itself to African conditions, slowly becoming a major African food staple. Since World War II, in fact, the emergence of hybrid maize has resulted in a sharp rise in maize cultivation in Africa, displacing traditional indigenous crops. McCann celebrates the ingenuity of African farmers as they adapted the crop to local customs and climactic conditions, but he argues that the policy world has largely ignored the socioeconomic and environmental implications of the emergence of maize as a staple. In the book's most fascinating chapter, he convincingly links a major malaria epidemic in the highlands of Ethiopia in 1998 to the widespread adoption of maize in the area over the preceding decade. -- Nicholas Van De Walle * Foreign Affairs *The author's botanical descriptions and explanations...help us comprehend the long history of maize in Africa. It arrived during the sixteenth century from all directions-north and south, east and west, Christian and Muslim--to become a major food source during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. McCann provides thoughtful histories of its early decades in northern Italy and Ethiopia, demonstrating how politics affects agriculture profoundly--and vice versa as well. -- Alfred W. Crosby * Technology and Culture *With a captivating title, Maize and Grace, James McCann considers the ambiguities of African development through a handful of creatively researched maize stories that demonstrate his well-honed investigatory and interpretative skills as a distinguished Africanist environmental historian...From an informed use of oral tradition, little-used agronomic research records, statistical analysis, and artistic and photographic evidence--shared through almost forty illustrations--McCann reveals how an environmental history of maize in Africa illustrates both the triumphs and tripwires of development science and politics. -- James Bingen * African Studies Review *As a field crop produced primarily to feed livestock and chicken, maize may appear to be a far cry from being considered a "grace" to humanity as the title of the book, Maize and Grace might suggest. However, considering the distinctive character it plays in human diets, it is not difficult to perceive maize as a blessing or grace. James McCann has chosen an ambitious task and has done it well. He set out to tell the remarkable saga of maize's ascension as a major dramatis persona in Africa's food supply over the past half millennium. As a historian, McCann has brought a different perspective to the importance of maize in the evolution of African agricultural systems...Maize and Grace is a fascinating book, and a joy to read. The book, based on painstaking research and historical data, provides a comprehensive account of how maize and humans have interacted since it was first introduced in Africa over half a millennium ago. It is eloquently written and loaded with a wealth of historical, social, cultural, botanical, ecological, and agricultural information and knowledge, as well as fresh, ingenious, and original insights. Professor McCann is to be commended and congratulated for his valuable scholarly contribution to agricultural literature. Can maize be Africa's "saving grace?" It is a question left for the reader to decide. -- Chung L. Huang * American Journal of Agricultural Economics *In this concise yet comprehensive monograph, James McCann deploys his considerable skills as a synthesizer to explain how maize, despite its nutritional and environmental constraints, has come to be the dominant food crop in Africa...In the end, what makes this book impressive is the way that it combines original fieldwork with a deep understanding of a by now formidable interdisciplinary literature...His approach allows this important book to make a significant contribution to the new literature on the history of African crop cultivation...It will become a must-read for students of agricultural and environmental history, geography and African history more generally. -- Jamie Monson * African History *A fascinating tour of five centuries of African history...[It] should attract some general readers as well as students of African agriculture. * Danny Yee’s Book Reviews *Table of ContentsPreface 1. Book SynopsisIs it possible to write the history of Japan’s colonial subjects? Ziomek contends that it is. By reconstructing individual life histories and following these people as they crossed colonial borders to the metropolis and beyond, Ziomek conveys the dynamic nature of an empire in motion.Trade ReviewLost Histories has several strengths to recommend it and should be required reading for scholars and students in modern Asian history and colonial studies…the method of shifting away from official records (colonial archives) and instead looking to nonofficial records that are textual, oral, visual, and material has opened up new and unfiltered documentation of personal experiences of colonization. -- Alice Y. Tseng * American Historical Review *Ziomek’s remarkable book Lost Histories occupies a unique place within this wave of scholarship [on Japanese imperialism] and represents a valuable contribution to it. What she has done…through her dogged research, is to force us to bring greater precision and empathy to our arguments about ethnicity and agency in colonial rule, in view of the lived experience of colonial subjects. In that sense, the book is truly a gift, one that I hope will feature prominently in future scholarship and teaching on the topic. * H-Diplo Reviews *A meticulously researched, vividly illustrated collection of micro-histories that bring to life the diverse peoples inhabiting the Japanese Empire…Ziomek contests narratives that see Japanese essentialization of ethnic difference as an attempt to strengthen their own position of power. Japan’s fixation on ethnic difference reveals not its success in securing a position of power atop the colonial racial hierarchy but instead the ‘precariousness’ of Japanese rule in the colonies. * Journal of Asian Studies *If, as the Naïve Idealist says, ‘a person’s name has the power to open a connection into their world,’ Kirsten L. Ziomek’s Lost Histories demonstrates that power. Her dogged pursuit of the names and life stories of people who lived within Japan’s formal empire is truly impressive. In several cases Ziomek circumvents the limitations of the ‘colonial archive’ to provide us with portrayals of people whose lives were certainly affected by the ‘oppressive nature of Japan’s colonial policies’ but were nevertheless full and fascinating. * Journal of Japanese Studies *As a work of original research that is both empirically grounded and conceptually bold, Lost Histories is highly recommended to scholars and students of imperial culture, colonial governance, and East Asian history. -- Paul D. Book SynopsisThe book argues that as Neo-Confucians put their philosophy of learning into practice in local society, they justified a new social ideal in which society at the local level was led by the literati with state recognition and support.Trade ReviewBol offers a comprehensive interpretation and polemical analysis of the place where ‘Neo-Confucianism fits into our story of China’s history.’ In reexamining China’s Middle Period, he compares the role of literati in Song and Yuan with that of the early and late Ming dynasty. Highlighting the development of discourse on learning, he observes that neo-Confucianism shifts moral authority away from the political system and toward a new conception of self, importantly developing the category of mind as the basis of moral guidance grounded in an act of will. In the late Ming this move promoted limited government combined with a new emphasis on autonomy and individual social responsibility that extended to people of all backgrounds. Bol points out that in spite of changes in the model of neo-Confucianism in the 17th century and the Qing conquest, the imperial order later continued to look to local elite leadership as the strength of its own existence. He brings forth evidence to support his projection that dual voices can perhaps ‘speak to China today.’ Bol argues that neo-Confucianism could serve, not just as history, but as a resource for thinking about the present. -- J. Huang shows how Daoist image-making goes beyond the usual dichotomy of text and image to incorporate writings in image design.Trade ReviewPicturing the True Form undertakes a path-breaking and comprehensive treatment of a highly important topic in the study of Chinese religions: the nature and cultural import of Daoist art. With an unprecedented level of analysis and meticulous attention to detail, Susan Huang considers Daoist artworks from the perspective of cultural history and presents exciting new data on how Daoist art differed from that of Buddhism. The result is not only an assiduous investigation of Daoist visual culture, but a veritable history of Daoism itself. -- Paul Katz, Institute of Modern History, Academia SinicaHuang’s book is an enormously valuable and monumental undertaking, highly recommended, and will go far to spread awareness of the vast Daoist visual lexicon. -- Stephen Little, Los Angeles County Museum of ArtThe first of its kind, Picturing the True Form is a comprehensive mapping of Daoist images found in various media—paintings, diagrams, drawings, and woodblock prints scattered throughout the Daoist canon.
