Nova Science Publishers Inc The Big Slide: The Digestive System from Top to

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe human digestive system plays an important role in processing food in order to provide nutrients that the body can use. This well-illustrated text presents the basics of anatomy, physiology and disease of the human digestive system by answering a series of questions relevant to the various components of this system. For example, in studying the stomach, the following questions are examined: 1) Where is the stomach located? 2) What does the stomach look like? 3) What does the stomach do? 4) Where do gastric juices come from? 5) What causes ulcers? 6) What causes a stomach ache? and 7) What causes burping? Additionally, most chapters are filled with unusual trivia related to the part of the body being discussed. For example, there was a 42-year-old woman who complained of mild abdominal pain and had 2533 objects removed from her stomach, including 947 pins. The text provides a fun and interesting way to learn more about the digestive system. The text is ideal, whether you are looking for an entertaining and informative read on the workings of the human digestive tract or looking for a text or resource for biology or health classes.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Clinical

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisGastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disorder affecting approximately more than 10% of the population. GERD is highly heterogeneous in terms of varied manifestations, test findings and treatment responsiveness. The invasive treatment options for GERD have now greatly expanded from just the Nissen Fundoplication to various other options such as other minimally invasive options like the Lower Esophageal augmentation with a magnetic device, and multiple endoscopic options like Radiofrequency ablation, Trans-oral incisionless fundoplication (TIF) etc. Treatment options require an understanding of the patho-physiology of GERD, which is discussed in chapter one of this book. Chapter two studies the clinical practices for extra-esophageal reflux and explores the outcomes. Chapter three reviews extraesophageal reflux and sleep microarchitecture disturbance and excessive daytime sleepiness. Chapter four discusses osteopathic manipulative therapy. The final chapter provides updated research on the surgical treatment options for GERD and their long-term outcomes.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Disorders of Gastrointestinal Systems & Clinical

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe field of gastrointestinal biology has been transformed by an explosion of knowledge for gastrointestinal motility, absorption, and secretion. The chapters in this book summarise the methods of molecular biology and the cell biology of gut enzymes, secreting cells and cells that respond to these enzymes. This book is a valuable reference for students, researchers and faculties of gastrointestinal motility, absorption and secretion. No other single source covers this field so comprehensively. It contains a considerable amount of detail on subjects such as gut hormones, gut malabsorption, alcohol toxicity on the stomach and methods used in physiologic study of the digestive tract. Disease conditions are discussed only to the extent that they illustrate physiologic mechanisms. It is difficult for such a comprehensive work to remain up to date for very long, considering how rapidly our knowledge of life sciences expands. This book, a comprehensive treatise on the causes, diagnosis, and management of gastrointestinal-motility disorders, consists of eighteen chapters with extensive references contained in slightly fewer than 300 pages. It achieves its goal through generally lucid writing and the overlap of information from chapter to chapter commonly observed in multi-authored works. Therefore, the reader is best advised to go through this book in a relaxed manner; this will allow them to finish it in a relatively short amount of time and appreciate the field of gastrointestinal motility, particularly current practices and research methods for solving its many riddles. All the chapters are clearly written, but the target audience seems to vary from medical students to practicing gastroenterologists. Despite these drawbacks, gastroenterologists, surgeons, and basic scientists wishing to bring their general knowledge of clinical motility disorders up to date will find this book useful.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Effects of Healthful Bioactive Compounds on the

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOptimal performance of the liver and gastrointestinal tract is vital for general human health. The gastrointestinal system is the main site of nutrient digestion and absorption, and therefore has substantial effects on providing energy and growth for the body. All nutrient and non-nutrient components have an impact on the gastrointestinal system, either locally or systemically. Undeniably, gastrointestinal disorders, with increasing lifetime prevalence, have a profound effect on human health and reduce the quality of life. Nowadays, therapeutic options are limited to medical therapy, including pharmacologic approaches and surgical intervention or lifestyle changes aimed at dietary modifications and increased physical activity. Certainly, dietary modifications can be effective in preventing, treating, and alleviating associated symptoms and complications. In addition to improving whole dietary patterns, the components of foods, collectively or independently, also have a substantial role in their therapeutic features. These components, particularly bioactive compounds, confer unique health benefits and aid in management of various diseases. Recently, investigators have paid much attention to chemopreventive activity of bioactive dietary compounds in the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal diseases. Fruits, vegetables and edible plants are the main source of biologically active compounds with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and protective properties. Most importantly, no major side effects have been reported for these compounds until now. Therefore, this book offers novel targets for prevention, treatment and management of liver and gastrointestinal diseases by providing evidence of effectiveness of bioactive compounds of functional foods. Furthermore, intracellular and molecular pharmacological mechanisms of action of bioactive compounds will also be discussed. It seems that bioactive compounds bring new hope for patients with gastrointestinal disorders through their anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative potential. The editors hope that the book will be a useful reference for researchers, product developers, health professionals and students.

  • Managing IBD: A Balanced Guide to Inflammatory

Hammersmith Health Books Managing IBD: A Balanced Guide to Inflammatory

Book SynopsisInflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is the term that includes Crohn's disease (which can affect any part of the gut) and ulcerative colitis (which affects the colon) - two chronic auto-immune conditions that cause gut pain, whole-body symptoms and poor digestion leading to nutritional deficiencies. Both are on the rise in the developed world and are newly affecting developing economies such as China (where the author was actually diagnosed). The link with the standard Western lifestyle is evident, yet what elements of that lifestyle can be modified to make a difference? And how can sufferers live with symptoms and 'flare ups' that do not respond to treatment and/or lifestyle changes? What is the real-life experience of IBD and what can be done to take back control? Jenna Farmer offers an holistic and positive guide to living with IBD, combining conventional, nutritional, stress reduction and other lifestyle approaches, drawing on her blogs, ebooks and website www.abalancedbelly.co.uk. Throughout, the book is 'illustrated' with case histories from Jenna's blog and other contacts, and from her own experience of delayed diagnosis and listening to her symptoms.Table of ContentsWhat is IBD really? Diet for IBD - principles, eating plan, exclusion diet, foods to avoid; Relaxation and stress reduction strategies; Becoming your own health advocate; Questions to ask doctors and other health professionals; Treatment options - conventional and complementary and what to expect; Juicing; Yoga and other exercise; Living with uncertainty

  • Take control: Insights into Irritable Bowel

TFM Publishing Ltd Take control: Insights into Irritable Bowel

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe proposed self-help book is different from all previous IBS books, for it approaches IBS from a new and exciting viewpoint -- that of coping with IBS using concepts and skills based on the individual's own psychological profile. The rationale is that there is uncertainty about the diagnosis and causes of IBS, and there are no treatments which are lastingly effective -- therefore, people with IBS must learn to cope with IBS as best they can. Psychological and social factors are known to influence the course of an illness, and the way people cope with that illness, even when illnesses have demonstrable physiological/biochemical causes. This book discusses the psychosocial factors which are involved in IBS, as a two-way relationship. It discusses the complex way in which mind/brain and body interact, in producing a different IBS experience' for each person who suffers with it. The book shows how a greater knowledge of IBS can lead to a reduction in feelings of being stigmatised and depressed, to a feeling of greater well-being. It shows how sufferers can reduce the impact symptoms have on their day-to-day lives. Complex psychological constructs are explained simply and with the aid of examples and real-life vignettes taken from case studies.

  • 50 Gastrointestinal Cases and Associated Imaging

TFM Publishing Ltd 50 Gastrointestinal Cases and Associated Imaging

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisMedical students and junior doctors are an integral part of the healthcare system. On an academic gastroenterology service, they often initially evaluate the patients that are then staffed by the consulting physician. Like all clinical specialties, the acquisition of medical knowledge is required to gain expertise. There are several resources such as textbooks and evidence-based articles that are available for this purpose. Inspired from patient care, this book offers a fresh approach to clinical teaching. This is a different kind of book. It encompasses a gamut of cases for which gastroenterologists are commonly consulted for in the hospital and outpatient setting. Each case is presented from initial history and work-up including imaging (various modalities including endoscopy), followed by a brief discussion on management. Questions are presented to the reader in each case followed by an answer. Since each case is unique, the pertinent teaching points are tested in a question format within the case narrative. Similar to real-life scenarios, this helps the reader to retain the most important information. Why buy this book? Unlike listing facts as most review books do, teaching points are integrated into realistic clinical cases. Medical students to residents/registrars in internal medicine, emergency medicine, GI medicine, radiology and surgery would benefit from this book alike. Secondary audiences will include nurses and general practitioners who want to understand the presentation of common GI cases and associated imaging. Moreover, it could also be potentially used as a training tool a valuable educational resource for senior colleagues who enjoy teaching. Finally, this book would make an excellent prerequisite prior to starting any gastroenterology rotation.Table of ContentsCholelithiasis; Gastritis due to Helicobacter pylori; Cecal cancer; Clostridium difficile colitis; Mesenteric adenitis; Hiatal hernia; Pancreatitis (alcohol-induced); Esophageal perforation; Appendicitis; Shock bowel; Duodenal lipoma; Zenkers diverticulum; Esophageal spasm; Familial Mediterranean fever; Porcelain gallbladder; Acute cholecystitis; Epiploic appendagitis; Crohns colitis; Small-bowel intussusception; Achalasia; Ulcerative colitis; Carcinoid syndrome; Peptic ulcer disease; Bile leak; Mirizzi syndrome; Esophageal varices; Alcoholic hepatitis; Celiac disease; Pyogenic liver abscess; Bilomas and biliary stricturing; Diverticulitis; Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm; Hepatocellular carcinoma; Portal vein thrombus; Gastric cancer; Radiation proctitis; Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis; Hepatitis B virus infection; Toxic megacolon; Ischemic colitis; Liver hemangioma; Gastroparesis; Primary sclerosing cholangitis; Primary biliary cirrhosis; Pancreatic head cancer; Hepatic steatosis; Small-bowel obstruction; Esophagitis; Esophageal cancer; Pancreatic pseudocyst.

  • The Wise Scalpel: Tips & Traps in liver,

TFM Publishing Ltd The Wise Scalpel: Tips & Traps in liver,

Book SynopsisSurgery remains a challenge for young learners. Perhaps the most difficult of all surgeries are those done on the liver, biliary tree and pancreas. These organs are difficult to expose, difficult to operate and the patients are often difficult to recover. There are significant consequences for any missteps on what is a narrow pathway to a successful outcome. The skills needed to master surgery on these organs are hard to acquire. The volume of information presented to students is enormous and complex to parse. HPB textbooks contain a large amount of information from various authors but are often poorly coordinated. Surgical manuals contain significant anatomic details and descriptions but have difficulty transferring key concepts. Experienced surgeons are often oblivious to their skills and communicate poorly to their students regarding the things they do or understand that make them wise. This book tries to capture this wisdom. The topics in this book are most applicable to hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeons but really extend to all general surgeons. Anyone who operates in the abdomen must have a basic understanding of these dominant organs; general surgery trainees and staff are an additional focus of this book. The skills needed for a modern surgeon to succeed are much broader than the scalpel tip. Section I, HPB Surgical Craft, imparts important lessons on the laws of human interactions and cognitive aspects of surgery. Sections on the anatomy and operations on the liver, pancreas and bile ducts are presented. The expanded gallbladder section and pancreatitis chapters are of particular importance to general surgery residents. This book has been written in a readable and entertaining style, with many fun historical and contemporary quotes dotted throughout. The Wise Scalpel is an attempt to impart knowledge and understanding to students and practicing surgeons at all levels. The book focuses on tips, traps and underlying truths about the diseases of these organs and their surgical treatment. While this book will not supplant the struggle needed to move from novice to expert surgeon, hopefully it will quicken the process and help avoid some of the dangers and frustrations along the way.

The July course will cover bacterial gastrointestinal infections, which doctors are increasingly called upon to treat. For example diarrhoea, the best known of these conditions, is no longer specific to the developing world and many bacterial infections are now appearing in western countries. Biological and clinical data are presented here in a synoptic work for young practitioners, edited by EAGE president Professor Galmiche. Latest knowledge about the mechanisms of these infections, their interactions with other systems and their medium- and long-term treatments has enabled specialists to lay the first foundations for future therapies, in particular treatments for and vaccines against diarrhoea.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisProceeding of the 10th International Symposium. Coeliac disease is again in front of the stage. After the advent of intestinal biopsy in clinical practice in the early sixties and during the following years, coeliac disease gained its status of a disease exemplary of the immune reaction of the gut mucosa to food antigens. During the following 10-15 years coeliac disease vanished behind progresses in mucosal immunology, and in the molecular biology of HLA molecules. The last years have seen the transformation of coeliac disease, from a rare and serious malabsorption syndrome into a polymorphic condition, the coeliac iceberg the immersed part of which now raises important public health issues. Regular International Symposium witness the development of our knowledge concerning coeliac disease. The last International Symposium on coeliac disease took place in Paris, at the Pasteur Institute in June 2-5, 2002. Its aim was to equally underline the major progresses made during the recent years in epidemiology, the genetics, the pathophysiology of the intestinal lesions and in the serological methods of diagnosis, the new clinical aspects of the disease and the more accurate evaluation of the risk of cancer, lesser than previously estimated. We hope that these proceeding will fulfil the expectations of all those, scientists as well as clinicians, paediatricians or adult gastroenterologists, who wish to update their knowledge on coeliac disease, this old but still stimulating lady of gastroenterology.

Book SynopsisDrug-induced mucosal damage is of immense importance in gastroenterology. It is imperative that clinicians understand how these lesions come about, what the sometimes devastating consequences are and what can be done to prevent or to treat such calamities. Drug-induced damage is bound to increase in the future as the population ages and polypharmacy becomes the rule instead of the exception. Hopes for improvement were shattered when the long term consequences of COX-2 inhibition became available. Is the COX-1/COX-2 concept truly obsolete? Several issues are discussed by European experts in the second part of the book. What the clinician should know about non acid, weakly acid or biliary reflux is discussed in depth. Novel developments of gastrointestinal neuropathies and motor disorders concentrate on IBS, pseudo-obstruction and faecal incontinence. Our surgical colleagues will certainly be interested in novel minimally invasive procedures. Finally all will learn from a critical analysis of novel diagnostic imaging modalities.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisKnowledge concerning oesophageal pathophysiology has until recently lagged far behind that of the pathophysiology of other portions of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract for reasons that still remain unclear. Yet, it is the fact that, at least until the last few decades, interest in the oesophagus was primarily based on pathologic anatomy. Even today, much remains to be learnt on the pathophysiology of oesophageal disease. The recent development of methods of studying both morphology and function of the oesophagus has resulted in a better understanding of normal and abnormal oesophageal patterns with a corresponding improvement in treatment, which is now physiologically, rather than anatomically based. As customary, the World OESO Congresses are planned to provide each time a thorough analysis of a specific topic in oesophageal disease. The 8th World Congress of OESO was devoted to the Foregut: Function and Dysfunction to emphasise the complex interaction between the oesophagus and the other portions of the upper GI tract, either in maintaining physiological function or in triggering oesophageal disease. The choice is a timely one because recent investigations have allowed new insights into the pathophysiology of these complex interactions to be gained. It is indeed becoming clear that there are intriguing pathophysiological abnormalities that account for upper GI symptoms and that more targeted therapy is needed to address the unmet clinical needs. Within this framework, specific sessions were devoted to disorders of secretion, of motility as well as of nutrition with a special emphasis on recent advances. Unlike some of the other publications, this volume does not merely represent the proceedings of an International Congress. With its now established and successful format, it collects the answers to 130 key questions, offered by 110 basic scientists and clinicians the world over, all of whom have personally contributed to the topic, in order to provide a glimpse of what may lie ahead. The easy-to-read format will allow the practising and busy physician to keep up efficiently with advances in diagnosis and therapy in this rapidly evolving field.

Book SynopsisWe are a culture increasingly obsessed with food and health, and with the possible relationship between the two. Yet everywhere we look we see conflicting opinions and advice about the role of food in health. We are inundated by books, T.V. specials, magazine and newspaper articles - so much so that people have begun to ignore today''s recommendations of health experts, knowing that today''s fad will be gone tomorrow. In Good Food for Bad Stomachs, Dr, Henry Janowitz shares this healthy skepticism about some of these news stories and sets out to make sense of the many research reports and claims, to sort out fact from opinion, and to suggest a sensible diet for those of us who have gastorintestinal complaints and for those of us who do not. He asks two central questions which shape the content and spirit of the book: Is there an ideal diet and is there a consensus on what the ideal diet might contain? And most important to his patients, what do we know about the role of our eating habits in preventing, causing, and treating the many disorders which plague our gastrointestinal tract and its associated digestive glands--the liver, gall bladder, and pancreas? Dr. Janowitz does believe we are what we eat, and the good news is that we can prevent many of our modern diseases by adhering to simple guidelines that are built on solid evidence and the insights of a master clinician who has spent a lifetime listening, treating, and healing patients.Trade ReviewGood Food for Bad Stomachs, authored by an expert in the study of digestive disorders for more than one-half century, is the best book on the subject yet written and is highly recommended for everyone with even a casual interest in food and health."--Joseph B.
