The University of Chicago Press Broke
Book SynopsisTrade Review"In a crowded field of studies on higher education, Broke distinguishes itself by presenting a truly unique, multifaceted, and critical portrait of the 'new university' as a racial project. Hamilton and Nielsen convincingly demonstrate how processes of 'postsecondary racial neoliberalism' concentrate underrepresented students of color in the least resourced public universities. In these institutional settings, diversity policies and practices are shaped not by only colorblind ideology, but austerity as well."--Michael Omi and Howard Winant, coauthors of Racial Formation in the United States "Broke has the makings of a classic for the sociology of higher education, race, and class stratification. Hamilton and Nielsen document the evolution of the 'new university' in race- and class-stratified society during what they coin as the 'postsecondary racial neoliberal' era. Bolstered by strong empirical analyses and captivating, incisive writing, this book draws the reader in and beckons us to shatter both the realities and ironies of segregated university education as conduits of economic mobility in a wealthy society." --Prudence L. The second report describes the roles of Federal Student Aids (FSA) non-school partners in the federal student financial aid program and assesses the extent to which FSAs policies and procedures for overseeing non-school partners protection of federal student aid data align with federal requirements, federal guidance and best practices. The third report examines how schools work with borrowers to manage schools cohort default rates and how these strategies affect borrowers and schools accountability for defaults, and the extent to which Education oversees the strategies schools and their default management consultants use to manage schools cohort default rates and informs the public about its efforts to hold schools accountable. Book SynopsisThe Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) is a Principal Office of the Department of Education (Education) and is tasked with ensuring that all eligible students enrolled in postsecondary educational schools benefit from federal financial assistance for education and training The objectives of chapter 1 are to: describe how FSA and schools use information they collect to manage the federal student aid program, determine the extent to which FSA policies and procedures for managing and protecting this information align with federal requirements, describe the extent to which schools have established policies and procedures for managing student aid information, and determine the extent to which FSA ensures that schools protect this information. Chapter 2 examines how Education certifies schools to administer federal student aid and how frequently schools are approved and denied certification; and the role of compliance audits in the certification process and what, if any, steps Education has taken to address the quality of the audit information. Chapter 3 describes the need analysis formulas used to calculate the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) for federal student aid applicants. The Department of Education''s Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA) partners with various entities ("non-school partners") that are involved primarily in supporting the repayment and collection of student loans The objectives of chapter 4 are to describe the roles of non-school partners and the types of personally identifiable information (PII) shared with them and assess the extent to which FSA policies and procedures for overseeing the non-school partners'' protection of student aid data adhere to federal requirements, guidance, and best practices. Chapter 5 examines how schools work with borrowers to manage schools'' cohort default rates, and how these strategies affect borrowers and schools'' accountability for defaults, and the extent to which Education oversees the strategies schools and their default management consultants use to manage schools'' cohort default rates and informs the public about its efforts to hold schools accountable. Chapter 6 examines the status of Education''s efforts to implement prior recommendations for improving oversight of federal student loan servicers. Nova Science Publishers Inc Cost of College: Trends & Analysis
Book SynopsisThe number of students seeking postsecondary education at public or private nonprofit institutions has increased by 31 percent over the last decade, and close to 90 percent of the overall student population is now enrolled in these types of schools. As demand for a postsecondary education has grown, so has the cost, and families are finding college increasingly difficult to afford. To help students pay for college, the Department of Education (Education) provides assistance through Title IV of the Higher Education Act, awarding $133 billion in federal student aid in the 2009-2010 school year. To help ensure transparency and accountability in the public and private nonprofit postsecondary education sectors, this book reviews schools in these sectors with respect to their revenue trends; expenditure trends; student graduation rates; and disclosure of information to students on cost of attendance, graduation rates, and future employment. The book also briefly presents trends in out-of-pocket net price for college, the amount that students and their families must pay to attend college after subtracting grants, loans, work-study, and all other student aid from the total price of attendance. It also presents out-of-pocket net price by income levels for the most recent data available (2011-12). For comparability, findings are presented for undergraduates attending full time for a full year and also trends are presented separately for key institution types.

Book SynopsisThe Department of Education (Education) relies on collection agencies to assist borrowers in rehabilitating defaulted student loans, which allows borrowers who make nine on-time monthly payments within 10 months to have the default removed from their credit reports. Education works with 22 collection agencies to locate borrowers and explain repayment options, including rehabilitation. From fiscal years 2011 to 2013, Education collected about $9 billion on over 1.5 million loans through rehabilitation, most of which was recovered by collection agencies. This book examines how Education assists borrowers in rehabilitating defaulted student loans; the upgrade of its defaulted loan information system affected loan rehabilitation; and Education oversees private collection agencies in implementing loan rehabilitation.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Improving the Financial Capability of Elementary
Book SynopsisPrograms and policies designed to promote higher levels of financial capability among youth have proliferated in recent years in the aftermath of the recent economic crisis. This trend is fueled by the growing recognition that more must be done to equip young people with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that will serve as the basis for a lifetime of sound financial decision‐ making. The recent Executive Order establishing the President s Advisory Council on Financial Capability for Young Americans and the recent announcement of the Financial Literacy Education Commissions (FLEC) new strategic focus on "Starting Early for Financial Success" are both significant markers of increased levels of commitment and dedication among national policy makers to this important issue. This book examines the findings from the Assessing Financial Capability Outcomes (AFCO) Youth Pilot, and provides options and ways to save and invest for students.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Student Loan Servicing: Analyses of Practices &
Book SynopsisStudent loans make up the nation''s second largest consumer debt market, surpassing all other categories of consumer debt aside from mortgages. Servicers are a critical link between borrowers and lenders. They manage borrowers'' accounts, process monthly payments, and communicate directly with borrowers. The servicer is often different than the lender, and a borrower typically has no control over which company services a loan. Regrettably, widespread servicing failures are being reported by both federal and private student loan borrowers. This book reviews and discusses public comments submitted in response to a request for information regarding student loan servicing by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. It includes recommendations for policymakers and market participants to improve borrower outcomes and reduce defaults, offering a roadmap for student loan servicing reform. This book also identifies a range of challenging issues for servicemembers with student loans.

Book SynopsisMany eligible borrowers do not participate in the Department of Education''s (Education) Income-Based Repayment and Pay As You Earn repayment plans for Direct Loans, and Education has not provided information about the plans to all borrowers in repayment. These plans provide eligible borrowers with lower payments based on income and set timelines for forgiveness of any remaining loan balances. As of September 2014, outstanding federal student loan debt exceeded $1 trillion, and about 14 percent of borrowers had defaulted on their loans within 3 years of entering repayment, according to Education data. This book discusses how participation in Income-Based Repayment and Pay As You Earn compares to eligibility, and to what extent Education has taken steps to increase awareness of these plans; and what is known about Public Service Loan Forgiveness certification and eligibility, and to what extent Education has taken steps to increase awareness of this program.

Oxford University Press, USA Endowment Asset Management Investment Strategies in Oxford and Cambridge
Book SynopsisThere is a profound linkage between the quality of a university and its financial resources. The universities of Oxford and Cambridge rank among the world''s finest educational institutions, and are able to draw on invested assets that are large by any standards. Endowment Asset Management explores how the colleges that comprise these two great universities make their investment decisions.Oxford and Cambridge are collegiate institutions, each consisting of a federal university and over 30 constituent colleges. While the colleges may have ostensibly similar missions, they are governed independently. Since they interpret their investment objectives differently, this gives rise to some remarkably dissimilar approaches to investment, which the authors explore in detail. The first study of its kind, Endowment Asset Management analyses the objectives, investment philosophy, asset management and governance of over 60 college and university endowment funds. Drawing on exhaustive research and detailed discussions with Oxford and Cambridge investment bursars, the authors investigate issues such as asset allocation and spending policy, which have a major influence on the institutions'' financial health. This study reveals the colleges'' individualism and diversity, and carefully analyses their strategies, which range from the traditional to cutting edge. The authors'' findings are thought provoking for anyone concerned with the assets of foundations, endowments, charities, family offices, or trusts. All investors with a long-term investment horizon will find it extremely engaging.Trade ReviewAll in all, Archarya & Dimson are to be hugely praised for producing a really useful and solid book, full of thought-provoking and stimulating material * David Palfreyman, Oxford Magazine *A thought provoking read. * Wealth Management *Table of Contents1. Today, student activists and trade unionists require an arsenal of weapons to fight back against the Tories' assault on higher education. Andrew McGettigan offers just that' -- Mark Bergfeld, NUS National Executive and spokesperson for the Education Activist Network'Andrew McGettigan is one of the most respected and incisive commentators on higher education.
