  • Workers At Risk

The University of Chicago Press Workers At Risk

Book SynopsisWorkers at Risk is a powerful and moving documentary of workers routinely exposed to toxic chemicals. Products and services we all depend onglass bottles, computers, processed foods and fresh flowers, dry cleaning, medicines, even sculpture and silkscreened toysare produced by workers in constant contact with more than 63,000 commercial chemicals. For many of them, the risk of death is a way of life. More than seventy of them speak here of their jobs, their health, and the difficult choices they face in coming to grips with the responsibilities, risks, fears, and satisfactions of their work. Some struggle for information and acknowledgment of their health risks; others struggle to put out of their minds the dangers they know too well. Through extensive interviews, the authors have captured in these voices that double bind of the chemical worker: If I had known that it would be that lethal, that it could give me or one of my children cancer, I would have refused to work. But it's a matter of survival and we just don't consider all these things. Meanwhile, we've got to make money to survive.

Book SynopsisBy comparing the simple skills employed by firefighters-climbing ladders and manipulating hoses-with the mundane technologies-maps and accounting charts-of insurers, the author demonstrates that the daily routines of both groups were instrumental in making intense urban and industrial expansion a less precarious endeavor.Trade ReviewFor the true story of the heroic firefighter's role in urban America, turn to Tebeau's investigative account. University of Chicago Magazine Tebeau develops an interwoven story of gender, class, culture, and technology: contrasting the heroics of working-class firefighters with the rational order of middle-class fire underwriters... An engaging narrative and a fascinating story make this book a rare pleasure-both an academic monograph and a good read. -- Dalit Baranoff EH.Net Emblazed against a historic backdrop of 150 years, Eating Smoke chronicles the parallel development of US firefighting forces and the fire insurance industry. Choice In his ambitious and detailed new book, Eating Smoke, Tebeau sets out to explain the role of two largely undocumented actors-firemen and insurance men-in analyzing, managing, and attacking urban fire... Tebeau's study vigorously opens the way for scholars looking to make sense of the city in the midst of an era of uncertainty and risk. -- Scott Gabriel Knowles Enterprise and Society A rich and highly informative work that deftly uses the 'problem' of urban fire to cast light on a wide array of turn-of-the-century transformations. American Historical Review For business historians its fascination may well lie in its combination of an active physical workforce who were banded together methodically in local pump houses and were tamed by a managerial and bureaucratic set of rules and procedures that were monitored by, if not subjected to, the guidelines of insurers. -- Margaret Walsh Business History In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the destructive power of fire posed a major obstacle to the development of urban America... Eating Smoke is a richly detailed chronicle of the two types of effort to confront and contain this vulnerability: firefighting and fire insurance. -- Carol Chetkovich Journal of Interdisciplinary History Tebeau's ambitious, informative, and absorbing book explains, among many other fascinating things, why little boys want to become firemen and not fire-insurance brokers. -- Carl Smith Business History ReviewTable of ContentsPreface and AcknowledgmentsIntroduction: The Problem of FirePart I: Smoke1. • Positive Pressure Attack for Ventilation & Firefighting

PennWell Books Positive Pressure Attack for Ventilation & Firefighting

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the past decades, lightweight building construction methods and the use of manmade materials in construction and furnishings have become more and more common. The time until structural failure can be expected in a fire has been reduced, and firefighters have seen hotter fires that generate high levels of deadly gasses. But the ventilation methods used by modern firefighters have not kept pace. Positive pressure was first used in the fire service to ventilate a structure after the fire was knocked down. Authors Kriss Garcia and Reinhard Kauffmann have taken positive pressure a step further to achieve effective ventilation in coordination with aggressive fire attack, called positive pressure attack (PPA). Properly used PPA allows firefighters great control over the interior environment of a fire building, and starts at the earliest stages of the operation when ventilation can provide the greatest benefit for victims, firefighters, and the structure. With a small investment in equipment and a commitment to training, any fire department can implement PPA at the company level. Subjects covered in this book include: • Basics of positive pressure and how to maximize its effectiveness for fireground ventilation. • PPA: how effective ventilation can be coordinated to support an aggressive fire attack. • Safety considerations and limitations of PPA and positive pressure. • Other ways positive pressure blowers can be used to help victims and firefighters in a variety of situations. • Implementing PPA on a department, and how to train each engine company to become its own firefighting force that can accomplish both ventilation and fire attack.

  • Hazardous Materials Incidents: Surviving the Initial Response

PennWell Books Hazardous Materials Incidents: Surviving the Initial Response

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst responders who arrive on scene of a hazardous materials incident may be assigned to an engine, ladder truck, rescue, or ambulance with very little sophisticated HAZMAT equipment. Despite these limitations, their actions during the initial response will often set the stage for the success or failure of the entire event. Many incidents start out as minor ""routine"" events that suddenly escalate when something goes terribly wrong. Perhaps first responders did not anticipate the involvement of hazardous materials in a response to a rear-end collision involving two passenger vehicles, an EMS call at a residence for difficulty breathing, or a trash fire. That is until it was too late! First responders, despite their best intentions, can quickly become part of any hazardous materials problem. The results can be first responders who are killed or seriously injured, or those who suffer devastating illnesses years after exposure to a hazardous material. Even if you have hours of training on hazardous materials response, this book will provide every reader with… • Practical advice based on the real-life experiences of first responders • A one-stop source on topics such as atmospheric monitors and class B foam • Steps to managing ""routine"" incidents to prevent them from becoming disasters • Limitations of federal hazardous materials regulations you need to know • Real-world examples of first responders who won (or lost) the battle with hazardous materials

Book SynopsisThree Key Messages: This is important. You can do it. I won't give up on you. Training ordinary people to do extraordinary things requires an understanding of how we learn. Developing Firefighter Resiliency starts with the basic psychophysical aspects of learning. The fire service has unwittingly used a failure-based training model for many years. Hands-on training exercises are often based on unachievable objectives. Trainers are often not educated about the psychology of adult learning or the effect of stress during learning. Consequently, participants face learning activities with mastery-level skill requirement to succeed when competency has yet to be established. This amounts to a never-ending diet of tests without actual skill development. Accessing knowledge under extreme circumstances cannot be left to chance, because the penalty for failure is severe. This book provides the roadmap for a journey to train, establish relevancy for the lessons, develop competency in the skills, and capitalize on confidence to achieve mastery. We study the impact of a stressful environment on the ability to learn and function.Table of Contents Preface Introduction Part 1: Adversity of Fire The Finer Points of Character The Anatomy of Fear Part 2: The Success-Based Training Model The Basics of Adult Learning The Four Ps to Success: Plan, Prepare, Present, and Post The Safety Plan: Not Just Another Form Part 3: Resiliency

Book SynopsisJohn Norman, author of the best-selling Fire Officer’s Handbook of Tactics, brings his own remarkable story to life in this new highly anticipated memoir. But this is a story about all firefighters—the men and women who are absolutely the salt of the earth, whose sole mission is to protect the lives and property of their neighbors. This book celebrates the lives of firefighters—a truly special group of people—and reintroduces them to the American public. What is a hero? A hero is a role model. To be a hero means protecting others at great personal risk because it’s the right thing to do. “Since September 11, 2001,” Norman writes, “people have been speaking about firefighters as ‘America’s Heroes.’ I truly believe they are heroes in the classical sense of the word.” Renowned for combining compelling storytelling with industry-standard tactical training, Norman offers an unparalleled look into the modern history of America’s fire service from a front-row seat. This is a celebration of the best in public service, its sacrifices and triumphs, and the people who were there, who will insist with uncommon humility, “I was just doing my job.”Table of Contents September 11th Vacants Being “Broken In” The Death of a Building (and a Neighborhood) Father’s Day on the Pier Harlem, USA The Major Deegan Expressway Railroad Pizza I’ll Make You a Detective!
