  • Critical Issues and Analysis in Fire Protection

Nova Science Publishers Inc Critical Issues and Analysis in Fire Protection

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWith an estimated 135 000 reported fire incidents occurring each day worldwide (CTIF World Fire Statistics Center, 2020), fire safety is a major societal and safety issue. Fires have an enormous impact on people''s lives and wellbeing. They cause massive amounts of air pollution, increase carbon emissions, and are responsible for the loss of invaluable natural and cultural heritage. In the current context of climate change, it is hence crucial to develop appropriate preventive and protective measures against fire. This book is a compilation of studies and advances on the current state of research related to critical issues and analysis in the field of fire safety, with chapter contributions from various countries and research institutions worldwide (Australia, Chile, France, India and USA). It aims to provide a broad picture of currently faced challenges and potential solutions from passive and active protective measures, to modelling and experimentations related to compartment and wildland fires. Chapter 1 and 2 address the issues of smoke generation in compartment fires, with, on the one hand, the risk of ignition of unburnt gases and, and on the other hand, the need for visibility through smoke for evacuation. Chapter 3 and 4 are dedicated to the fire resistance and pyrolysis study of innovative composite materials and bio-based flame retardants, notably for vehicle and aircraft applications. Chapter 5 discusses the challenges related to the fire protection of built cultural heritage and evaluate the performance of an innovative sprinkler fire suppression system. Chapter 6 addresses the issue of forest fires and provides a methodology to improve the emergency response time at urban-forest interfaces. Chapter 7 opens up the discussion and provides potential solutions to help reduce the occurrence of wildfires and increase community safety in the context of climate change by involving renewable energies and local fire stations.

Book Synopsis"At first I''m calm as the trees fall. But suddenly a rat''s nest of wood, bent horizontal and cribbed into the trees above us, comes down in a rush of a hundred machine gun snaps. Trees caught in the nest flail around before hitting the ground. Our eyes dart everywhere, trying to keep track of every moment. Trees break free and swing themselves like catapults. Splintered chunks of wood slash through the air like propellers... Falling trees is the most dangerous job in North America."--Aaron WilliamsBritish Columbia''s weather and geography--hot dry summers, steep terrain, and population density in forested areas--make it one of the most difficult places in the world to fight forest fires. Chasing Smoke is an enthralling insider-account of how a fire season unfolds. Experienced firefighter Aaron Williams offers a tangible window into the intensely physical, high-adrenalin lifestyle shared by his crew of eccentrics, all eager to be on the front line. Williams shares what it''s like to work sixteen-hour days in an apocalyptic landscape, where the smoke is so thick your snot runs black and you need to drink ten litres of water a day. What it''s like to make a stupid mistake and singe your beard in front of your crew, or spend hours hosing a spot the size of a queen mattress and still not extinguish the burn. What it''s like to hear a tree fall, a co-worker''s shout, and imagine the worst. From the "curated gauntlet of abuse" that makes up rookie week, until the last length of hose is rolled up at the end of the burn season, Williams chronicles the seasonal existence of a firefighter, all while examining the wider world of firefighting--interweaving the history, mechanics and politics--as well as the micro-world of the small crew who willingly put their lives on the line.

Book SynopsisNick Raeside worked at many jobs in the logging business but the one that he specialized in was starting forest firessmall, (hopefully) controlled forest fires that were approved by the Forest Serviceindeed, required by themas a means of cleaning up logging slash or debris-laden sites left after the merchantable timber had been removed. It was a crude way of reducing fire hazard and clearing the ground for replanting, and there was a constant danger that the controlled burns would get away and become real wildfires, destroying millions of dollars' worth of standing timber. Raeside found this challenge irresistible.InSlashburner, Raeside recounts many hilarious anecdotes from his career in theBCwoods during the1970s, '80s and '90s. He worked as a forest firefighter for a time, but discovered he was more interested in starting fires than putting them out,and found his calling in slashburning. In between pissing on rain gauges to fake wetter weather and lighting each other's pants on fire, Raeside and his slashburning crews rampaged throughout southernBCarmed with drip torches, chainsaws and homemade explosives. They lit fires. They put some of them out. They survived rockslides, animal encounters and flare fights.Slashburneris a rollicking tale of the good old times in the logging business when danger and excitement were the order of the day and almost everyone you met was a memorable character. Raeside captures the flavour of that era as few have done before.Including thirty colour photos that prove it actually did all happen,Slashburneris the first book to take readers beneath the smoke cloud to find out what really takes place on a slashburn.

  • Positive Pressure Attack for Ventilation & Firefighting

PennWell Books Positive Pressure Attack for Ventilation & Firefighting

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the past decades, lightweight building construction methods and the use of manmade materials in construction and furnishings have become more and more common. The time until structural failure can be expected in a fire has been reduced, and firefighters have seen hotter fires that generate high levels of deadly gasses. But the ventilation methods used by modern firefighters have not kept pace. Positive pressure was first used in the fire service to ventilate a structure after the fire was knocked down. Authors Kriss Garcia and Reinhard Kauffmann have taken positive pressure a step further to achieve effective ventilation in coordination with aggressive fire attack, called positive pressure attack (PPA). Properly used PPA allows firefighters great control over the interior environment of a fire building, and starts at the earliest stages of the operation when ventilation can provide the greatest benefit for victims, firefighters, and the structure. With a small investment in equipment and a commitment to training, any fire department can implement PPA at the company level. Subjects covered in this book include: • Basics of positive pressure and how to maximize its effectiveness for fireground ventilation. • PPA: how effective ventilation can be coordinated to support an aggressive fire attack. • Safety considerations and limitations of PPA and positive pressure. • Other ways positive pressure blowers can be used to help victims and firefighters in a variety of situations. • Implementing PPA on a department, and how to train each engine company to become its own firefighting force that can accomplish both ventilation and fire attack.

PennWell Books Hazardous Materials Incidents: Surviving the Initial Response

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisFirst responders who arrive on scene of a hazardous materials incident may be assigned to an engine, ladder truck, rescue, or ambulance with very little sophisticated HAZMAT equipment. Despite these limitations, their actions during the initial response will often set the stage for the success or failure of the entire event. Many incidents start out as minor ""routine"" events that suddenly escalate when something goes terribly wrong. Perhaps first responders did not anticipate the involvement of hazardous materials in a response to a rear-end collision involving two passenger vehicles, an EMS call at a residence for difficulty breathing, or a trash fire. That is until it was too late! First responders, despite their best intentions, can quickly become part of any hazardous materials problem. The results can be first responders who are killed or seriously injured, or those who suffer devastating illnesses years after exposure to a hazardous material. Even if you have hours of training on hazardous materials response, this book will provide every reader with… • Practical advice based on the real-life experiences of first responders • A one-stop source on topics such as atmospheric monitors and class B foam • Steps to managing ""routine"" incidents to prevent them from becoming disasters • Limitations of federal hazardous materials regulations you need to know • Real-world examples of first responders who won (or lost) the battle with hazardous materials

Failure to recognize change and adapt to it places a fire department at a great disadvantage and can cost lives and property. The community changes that most directly affect the fire service today include faster, hotter, and more toxic fires and significantly reduced staffing in many fire departments. These are inescapable facts. Our challenge is to use the knowledge that is at our disposal to select the right tools, technologies, and tactics to safely and successfully adapt to and overcome these challenges.Table of Contents Foreword Acknowledgments Part I: General firefighting tactics General principles of firefighting Size-Up Engine company operations Hoseline selection, stretching, and placement Water supply Sprinkler systems and standpipe operations Ladder company operations Forcible entry Ventilation Search and rescue Part II: Specific fire situations Firefighter survival Operations in lightweight buildings Private dwellings Multiple dwellings Garden apartment and townhouse fires Store fires--taxpayers and strip malls High-rise office buildings Buildings under construction, renovation, and demolition Fire-related emergencies: incinerators, oil burners, and gas leaks Electrical fires and emergencies Structural collapse Fire department roles in terrorism and homeland security Glossary Index

Book SynopsisThree Key Messages: This is important. You can do it. I won't give up on you. Training ordinary people to do extraordinary things requires an understanding of how we learn. Developing Firefighter Resiliency starts with the basic psychophysical aspects of learning. The fire service has unwittingly used a failure-based training model for many years. Hands-on training exercises are often based on unachievable objectives. Trainers are often not educated about the psychology of adult learning or the effect of stress during learning. Consequently, participants face learning activities with mastery-level skill requirement to succeed when competency has yet to be established. This amounts to a never-ending diet of tests without actual skill development. Accessing knowledge under extreme circumstances cannot be left to chance, because the penalty for failure is severe. This book provides the roadmap for a journey to train, establish relevancy for the lessons, develop competency in the skills, and capitalize on confidence to achieve mastery. We study the impact of a stressful environment on the ability to learn and function.Table of Contents Preface Introduction Part 1: Adversity of Fire The Finer Points of Character The Anatomy of Fear Part 2: The Success-Based Training Model The Basics of Adult Learning The Four Ps to Success: Plan, Prepare, Present, and Post The Safety Plan: Not Just Another Form Part 3: Resiliency

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Dynamic Fire Chief: Principles for Organizational Management seeks to bridge the gap between service delivery (management of street level operations) and the executive-level management needed by a five-bugle-wearing CEO. Whether you lead a paid or volunteer department, the management skills needed to lead a successful department are the same. Fire chiefs today are responsible for how emergency services are provided to the community as well as finances, human resources, legal issues, marketing, compliance, vision casting, and succession planning. Many fire service leaders fail to understand that financial management is the lifeblood of attaining the resources needed to allow effective fireground operations. Most fire chiefs get to the top spot by being good firefighters and officers, but they are challenged because they were never actually trained to be an organizational CEO. The Dynamic Fire Chief serves as a “how to guide” to help fire chiefs navigate some of the more challenging topics of organizational leadership. Craig A. Haigh - the 2012 Illinois Career Fire Chief of the Year and recipient of the 2019 International Association of Fire Chiefs - Chief Alan Brunacini Executive Safety Award - shares his unvarnished stories of personal success and failure from his 30+ year career as a fire chief.

Book SynopsisDrive to Survive: The Art of Wheeling the Rig provides an in-depth examination of fire apparatus vehicle dynamics. This is not your average “driver training” textbook. Fire apparatus operators must understand how a vehicle maneuvers at roadway speed, and more importantly…why does it crash? Just as a doctor cannot heal the human body without a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology, an emergency vehicle operator cannot safely drive a fire apparatus without an in-depth knowledge of vehicle dynamics. This book provides an in-depth knowledge of topics required in the following NFPA standards NFPA 1002 “Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications” - Section 4-3 NFPA 1451 “Standard for Fire and Emergency Service Vehicle Operations Training Programs” NFPA 1500 “Standard on Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program” – Section 6 Drive to Survive fills in the gaps between vehicle dynamics and crash causation. After 15 years of training and research, Chris Daly developed a training program combining his fire service and crash reconstruction training experience.Fire apparatus operators will learn the limits of driving an emergency vehicle and will understand that no matter how long they have been driving or how good they think they are, at some point physics will take over and the vehicle will lose control. Drive to Survive goes beyond talking about pump operations, aerial operations, and preventative maintenance. We can reduce the number of emergency vehicle crashes throughout the world by addressing key issues and providing emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC) instructors with methods to convey these concepts. Concepts you learn in this book relate to more than just driving a fire apparatus. These principles apply to anyone who drives a vehicle, including your family members and loved ones.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Forest Service and Interior agencies have initiated a number of steps to address key operational areas previously identified as needing improvement to help federal agencies contain wildland fire costs, but the effects on containing costs are unknown, in part because many of these steps are not yet complete. First, federal fire-fighting agencies are developing a system to help them better identify and set priorities for lands needing treatment to reduce fuels, but they have yet to decide how they will keep data in the system current. Second, federal agencies have taken some steps to improve how they acquire and use personnel, equipment, and other fire-fighting assets -- such as implementing a computerised system to more efficiently dispatch and track available fire-fighting assets -- but have not yet completed the more fundamental step of determining the appropriate type and quantity of fire-fighting assets needed for the fire season. Third, the agencies have clarified certain policies and are improving analytical tools that assist officials in identifying and implementing an appropriate response to a given fire, but several other policies limit the agencies'' use of less aggressive fire-fighting strategies, which typically cost less. Fourth, federal agencies, working with non-federal entities, have recently taken steps to clarify guidance to better ensure that fire-fighting costs are shared consistently for fires that threaten both federal and non-federal lands and resources, but it is unclear how the agencies will ensure that this guidance is followed. This book is an edited and excerpted version.

Book SynopsisThis book explores various aspects of fire safety in the home. The first section is devoted to addressing the risks presented by cooking fires, as well as detailing the practices that are necessary to prevent the fires. Fires resulting from cooking continue to be the most common type of fire experienced by U.S. households, and they are also the leading cause of home fire injuries. The U.S. Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association collaborated in an effort to research the types of behaviours and sequences of events that lead to cooking fires and develop sound recommendations for behavioural mitigation strategies that will reduce such fires and their resultant injuries and fatalities. Other sections include simple tips for fire safety, risk factors to older adults, and information to support the benefits of a wider utilisation of smoke alarms in the home. This book consists of public domain documents which have been located, gathered, combined, reformatted, and enhanced with a subject index, selectively edited and bound to provide easy access.

Book SynopsisFire is a daunting human ecological challenge and a major subject in science and policy debates about global trends in land conversion, climate change, and human health. Persistent environmental orthodoxies reduce complex burning traditions to overly simplistic representations of environmental destruction, degradation, and loss while reinforcing existing social inequities involving smallholders. Fire Otherwise: Ethnobiology of Burning for a Changing World advocates for a more inclusive and pluralistic fire ecology, a shift from the paradigmatic globalized version of fire science and management towards research and management that embraces anthropogenic fire regimes and broader understandings of the ways humans interact with fire. The authors present new evaluations of human interactions with fires in contexts of changing environmental conditions. Through deep description and analysis of knowledge and practices enacted by local communities who ignite, manage, and extinguish fires, this collection of case studies supports proactive local and regional efforts to adapt amidst continually changing social and ecological circumstances.Trade Review“This book is very important. It’s the first edited volume on fire ethnography and it is a good balance of thorough overview and specific in-depth studies. There is very little out there that is comparable.” —Eugene N. Anderson, professor emeritus, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Riverside “Provides work previously unavailable on a timely subject in an interesting manner. The book will be of interest to those specializing in fire management, people interested in how various groups manage fire, climate-change specialists, and readers with geographical/enthnographical interests.” —Carol J. Book SynopsisIn 1985, desiring a meaningful, high-paced career in public service, Rachel Wentz left her university studies to become a firefighter/paramedic. Only the eighth woman hired by the Orlando Fire Department, a highly competitive department steeped in tradition, Wentz excelled, completing an AS in Fire Science, a master’s degree in public administration, and numerous specialized training courses to prepare her for an administrative position within the department. Wentz spent eleven years with OFD, experiencing a career that was every bit as exciting and challenging as she had sought. A moving, candid, and eloquent memoir, Let Burn recounts her experiences as a firefighter/paramedic, during which time she witnessed aspects of life and death few people are privy to, experiences that shaped her as a professional and as a person. From the rigorous demands of training to the extraordinary calls Wentz responded to, Let Burn details the gratifying aspects of the field, but also demonstrates the precarious nature of the job: a heated altercation at the scene of an industrial fire leads to Wentz losing almost everything she’s worked for and the dramatic end of a storied career. In vivid detail, Let Burn provides a firsthand glimpse into the hidden world of firefighting and emergency medicine.
