MP-MPP University Press of Mississippi Agnès Varda
Book SynopsisOver nearly sixty years, Agnès Varda (b. 1928) has given interviews that are revealing not only of her work, but of her remarkably ambiguous status. She has been called the ""Mother of the New Wave"" but suffered for many years for never having been completely accepted by the cinematic establishment in France. Varda's first film, La Pointe Courte (1954), displayed many of the characteristics of the two later films that launched the New Wave, Truffaut's 400 Blows and Godard's Breathless. In a low-budget film, using (as yet) unknown actors and working entirely outside the prevailing studio system, Varda completely abandoned the ""tradition of quality"" that Truffaut was at that very time condemning in the pages of Cahiers du cinema. Her work, however, was not ""discovered"" until after Truffaut and Godard had broken onto the scene in 1959. Varda's next film, Cleo from 5 to 7, attracted considerably more attention and was selected as France's official entry for the Festival in Cannes. Ultimately, however, this film and her work for the next fifty years continued to be overshadowed by her more famous male friends, many of whom she mentored and advised. Her films have finally earned recognition as deeply probing and fundamental to the growing awareness in France of women's issues and the role of women in the cinema. ""I'm not philosophical,"" she says, ""not metaphysical. Feelings are the ground on which people can be led to think about things. I try to show everything that happens in such a way and ask questions so as to leave the viewers free to make their own judgments."" The panoply of interviews here emphasize her core belief that ""we never stop learning"" and reveal the wealth of ways to answer her questions.

Damiani BYWAYS. Photographs by Roger A Deakins
Book Synopsis“The real charm of Byways isn’t playing spot-the-location as Deakins dabbles between takes, but the window it opens onto his youthful eye. You can trace his drive from an early age to catch the light at its best – or wait for it – all night if necessary.” - The Telegraph “…his first monograph, Byways, looks not to his revered cinematography career, but his decades-long habit of taking still photographs. Among them are breathtaking landscapes and moments of stillness, interspersed with photographs imbued with wit thanks to the playful possibilities of scale, framing and timing. It’s the kind of dry humour that sits passers by in conversation with monuments and miscellaneous objects in the street, or captures a canine rendition of Cartier-Bresson’s seminal image Behind The Gare Saint-Lazare. – Creative Review “Candid close-ups, wide-angle landscapes, and dynamic long exposures, his monochrome photographs display a variety of approaches and techniques, yet first and foremost, testify to the remarkably perceptive artistic gaze that has seen him nominated for an Oscar on fifteen separate occasions (winning twice). Thoughtful, poetic, and profoundly arresting, they display his distinct enigmatic sensibility, and presented for the most part with little or no information or context (index aside) form a compelling visual soliloquy that conveys with great eloquence, the profound power of the still image.” The Independent Photographer “An intimate introduction to the man behind the lens” – The Times Portraits and landscapes from the cinematographer famed for his work with Sam Mendes and the Coen brothers This is the first monograph by the legendary Oscar-winning cinematographer Sir Roger Deakins, best known for his collaborations with directors such as the Coen brothers, Sam Mendes and Denis Villeneuve. It includes previously unpublished black-and-white photographs spanning five decades, from 1971 to the present. After graduating from college Deakins spent a year photographing life in rural North Devon, in South West England, on a commission for the Beaford Arts Centre; these images are gathered here for the first time and attest to a keenly ironic English sensibility, also documenting a vanished postwar Britain. A second suite of images expresses Deakins’ love of the seaside. Traveling for his cinematic work has allowed Deakins to photograph landscapes all over the world; in this third group of images, that same irony remains evident.

Book SynopsisThis book provides the most complete account of Paul Thomas Anderson’s career to date, encompassing his evolution from a self-anointed auteur to one of his generation’s most distinctive voices. It is at once an unconventional primer on Anderson’s films and a provocative reframing of what makes his work so essential.Trade ReviewThe Cinema of Paul Thomas Anderson is a feast of a book. With consummate clarity and inventiveness, Warren brings the films into rich, often fractious dialogue with one another. The results are extraordinarily illuminating. The entire book is infused with the kind of energy and delectable unpredictability that I associate with Anderson’s art at its best. Warren’s study shakes up conventional approaches to director-centered analysis in a fashion that will have lasting influence. -- George Toles, University of Manitoba, author of Paul Thomas AndersonEthan Warren should be commended for his razor-sharp analysis and rich knowledge of Anderson’s unique perspective and worldview, as well as Anderson’s contribution to American cinema. Warren leaves no stone unturned in this book, and his insightful enthusiasm makes these multifaceted films come alive through his careful study of Anderson’s life and influences. -- Whitney Crothers Dilley, author of The Cinema of Wes AndersonSmart and compelling. -- Christopher Schobert * The Film Stage *[Warren] brings his cinephilic eloquence to bear upon unknotting the enigmatic plots of, or characters in, Anderson’s films as well as Anderson’s ethos. Anthem Press Challenging the Narrative: Documentary Film as
Book SynopsisDrawing on his experiences directing films in Ireland, Haiti, Brazil and South Africa, McLaughlin reflects on the potential of documentary film to provide a platform for those who have experienced political violence to challenge dominant narratives that marginalises them, and that offers potential for personal and public healing. Using participatory methodologies, each case study analyses conditions of production, political context, participatory potential, and impact of the films on both survivors and the general public. Challenges are addressed and lessons suggested for similar projects in the areas of documentary film, transitional justice, participatory ethnography and political activism.Trade Review“McLaughlin radically listens to stories of trauma most people do not want to hear. His exploration into these liminal spaces is an extensive study on participant-led mitigation of colonial violence and documentary hierarchy. It occupies a risky territory, between governments, terrorists, and political waves with innocent people at its core.” —Soumyaa Behrens, Director, Documentary Film Institute, Faculty, School of Cinema, San Francisco State University, USA.“This timely book is valuable in its discussion of ethical issues and subject participation in documentary films where survivors of violence and trauma, generally excluded from public discourse, return to the locations of their traumatic experiences. The book challenges the notion of a one-size-fits-all ethical protocol for subject trust and collaboration.” —Dr Jill Daniels, Senior Lecturer Film, University of East London, UK.Table of ContentsList of Figures; Acknowledgements; Introduction; 1 Practice as Research; 2. HarperCollins Publishers Inc Alright Alright Alright
Book SynopsisTrade Review“It’s gossipy and funny and sometimes wistful and sad, but it’s page-turning. . . . For a film lover like me, Alright, Alright, Alright is an endless feast of facts and revelations. I’m gonna guess that for the casual filmgoer (and even someone who’s never seen Dazed and Confused) it will be fascinating just for the thrill of reading older people looking back with joy, bewilderment and sometimes anger at a time when they were not only young, but when their youth blazed.” — Patton Oswalt, New York Times Book Review “The story of Dazed and Confused has been told before, but never with the depth, breadth, or remarkable reproduction of the film’s conversational rhythms found in Melissa Maerz’s new oral history. . . . Like Linklater’s depiction of the last day of school circa 1976, Maerz’s book envelops readers in time and place. But while the movie’s more of a snapshot, Alright, Alright, Alright is a panorama, enriched by deep background…. It’s a class reunion that doesn’t suck, attended by almost all of the living principals.” — AV Club “[Maerz] does a lot more than just weave the oral history behind a famous movie. She makes it feel like the story of a generation….. This book does for the Nineties what the movie did for the Seventies: a lovingly detailed portrait of an era, celebratory but inevitably elegiac, full of tiny comic moments that seem to sum up the decade’s craziest hopes and dreams…. Like the movie, the book is pure pleasure because makes you feel like you’re hanging out with these friends—it’s a joy to jump and join them on a slow ride.” — Rob Sheffield, Rolling Stone “A charming oral history of everyone’s favorite stoner film. . . . Essential for fans of the film but also for anyone with ambitions to work in film on either side of the camera.” — Kirkus, starred review “Fun reading, enhanced by veteran entertainment journalist Maerz’s expert chapter introductions and many, well-organized conversations with everyone from Linklater to the stars to the film crew. But Alright, Alright, Alright is also an interesting peek into the many relationships that must be navigated in the making of a film, and a surprising foray into the nature of memory and nostalgia. A must for fans of the movie and readers interested in the moviemaking experience.” — Booklist, starred review “Thorough, funny, and bittersweet.” — Texas Monthly “Touches on the volatility of young artists, the hormones of youthful performers, the conflicts between corporate and artistic stakeholders, the ways our entertainment is presented to us and how we consume it. The book, like the film, is a story about time. ... One of the joys in Alright, Alright, Alright is the perspective Maerz attains with the time that has passed since the making of “Dazed,” as well as its release, its lukewarm reception and its long-tail embrace. Her book becomes less specifically tied to the film and more about how time affects all of us after adolescence.” — Houston Chronicle “An at times humorous chronicle of how a small film became a touchstone of 1990s cinema, with introspective analysis of directing techniques, casting, and performance. . . . Linklater devotees, those who love Dazed and Confused, and anyone interested in 1990s indie film will appreciate Maerz’s detailed tribute.” — Library Journal “An intricate oral history… any cinephile would be happy to check out.” — Publishers Weekly

Book SynopsisPost Sound Design provides a practical introduction to the fascinating craft of editing and replacing dialog, creating Foley and sound effects, editing music, and balancing these elements to a final mix. Based on years of experience and teaching this material to students at Drexel University, award-winning film composer John Avarese offers user-friendly knowledge and stimulating exercises to help compose story, develop characters and create emotion through skillful creation of the sound track. Starting each chapter with a real-life example, the textbook is structured in such a way to create a fundamental understanding of the physics and the biological foundation of hearing, and putting it into practice with suggested movie scenes demonstrating the discussed audio techniques. Post Sound Design engagingly demonstrates the individual areas essential to creating a soundtrack that will enhance any media production.Trade ReviewPost Sound Design is perfect for all aspiring Sound Designers. It’s an excellent guidebook for all aspects of film audio, from initial capture to final product, covering both aesthetic and technical concerns. John Avarese draws from his long career as a composer and sound designer to share priceless practical and organizational advice, as well as pitfalls to avoid. And it’s written in John’s down-to-earth style, making the information easy to digest. Sound is a vital component to any successful film. Good sound gives the visuals an extra magical dimension of context and character, adding elements and realities that can’t be captured by a camera alone. On the other hand, poor sound will ruin excellent visuals. John Avarese offers key points to consider, even before a single scene is shot, to help ensure professional sound quality for films of any budget. Over the years, I’ve worked with John, and his musical and sonic talents really make my films come to life – the result of knowing what each other needs. So, let me go one step further and say: every filmmaker should read this book! If you understand the audio process, it’ll improve your film and save you lots of heartache later on in post-production. * Michael Bailey, Independent Filmmaker, Philadelphia, PA, USA *Post Sound Design is an essential guide to the invisible, yet indispensable art of sound design for motion pictures. John Wiley & Sons Inc Colour Reproduction in Electronic Imaging Systems
Book SynopsisWith the move of cinema away from film, the adoption of electronic-based production throughout all media is now complete. In order to exploit its advantages, the accurate definition, measurement and reproduction of colour has become more important than ever to achieve the best fidelity of colour reproduction. This book is concerned with providing readers with all they need to know about colour: how it is perceived and described, how it is measured and generated and how it is reproduced in colour systems. It serves as both a tutorial and a reference book, defining what we mean by colour and providing an explanation of the proper derivation of chromaticity charts and through to the means of ensuring accurate colour management. Key Features: Addresses important theory and common misconceptions in colour science and reproduction, from the perception and characteristics of colour to the practicalities of its rendering in the fields of television, photography and cinemTrade Review“Michael Toom's book is the technical manual about colour that every colour scientist or engineer working in professional digital imaging has ever dreamt of reading. Not only it does cover and elegantly narrates the generic aspects of the discipline and the pragmatic reasons behind many technical and/or historical choices. It's also a fundamental compendium of detailed formulae, hard to find at all (if ever, well organized, in one piecework).” - Walter Arrighetti, Frame by Frame Italia srl “The author’s approach in developing the subjects from a fundamental level will be of great benefit to those who want a thorough grasp of colour reproduction, and should avoid some of the misconceptions that can arise where the fundamentals are only given a cursory treatment. The book deserves to be regarded as a ‘go to’ resource for those working in the field of colour reproduction, or those who have a strong interest in colour reproduction. It is a book well suited to the needs of engineers and scientists.” - The Imaging Science Journal, 2016 Vol. 64 No. 3 Table of ContentsPreface xiii Acknowledgements xv About the Companion Website xix University Press of Mississippi George Stevens: Interviews
Book SynopsisAt first glance, George Stevens (1904Ð1975) appears to be the quintessential Hollywood director. A closer look at his achievements shows him to be more than just the creator of some of the smartest melodramas and comedies of the 1930s and 1940s, including Annie Oakley, Swing Time, and Gunga Din. Several of his films--Giant, The Diary of Anne Frank, Shane, The Greatest Story Ever Told, and A Place in the Sun--are regarded as some of the most important and enduring dramas of postwar American cinema. As a leading producer and director of his era, Stevens repeatedly pushed against the Hollywood grain and clashed with censors. George Stevens: Interviews showcases the deep moral vision of a director who is as meticulous, discerning, and contemplative in his conversations as he is as a filmmaker. Although not regarded as an auteur during his career, Stevens can now be understood as one of America's most personal and distinguished directors. Throughout this collection, his increasing concern over the control of his films is evident, and, like Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks, he became a producer/director who claimed absolute control over his work. His interviews show a man committed to his chosen art and fully aware of the responsibilities that come with that choice. Paul Cronin is a writer and filmmaker.

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Beyond the Bottom Line
Book SynopsisThis is the first collection of original critical essays devoted to exploring the misunderstood, neglected and frequently caricatured role played by the film producer. The editors'' introduction provides a conceptual and methodological overview, arguing that the producer''s complex and multifaceted role is crucial to a film''s success or failure. The collection is divided into three sections where detailed individual essays explore a broad range of contrasting producers working in different historical, geographical, generic and industrial contexts. Rather than suggest there is a single type of producer, the collection analyses the rich variety of roles producers play, providing fascinating and informative insights into how the film industry actually works. This groundbreaking collection challenges several of the conventional orthodoxies of film studies, providing a new approach that will become required reading for scholars and students.Trade ReviewThis will prove an invaluable book, both to students and to those wishing to learn more about the film and media industries. Its spread is broad, making comparisons between different countries, practices and genres, and yet its intellectual focus is precise and well-conceived. The work of the producer has received scant attention in the past, and this important book rectifies that, and in a thorough, sophisticated and approachable way. Not to be missed. * Sue Harper, Emeritus Professor of Film History, University of Portsmouth, UK *A pioneering and timely volume emphasizing historical and transnational perspectives, Beyond the Bottom Line brings the myths and realities of the producer’s many roles into clear focus. Offering well developed case studies and conceptual clarification, the contributors deepen and extend the ongoing conversation about practitioner’s agency in thoughtful and productive ways. * Mette Hjort, Chair Professor of Visual Studies, Lingnan University, Hong Kong *This long-overdue scholarly collection represents an important step forward in the study of the role of the movie producer. Beyond the Bottom Line is a welcome addition to the burgeoning literature of production and industry studies. Its broad range of critical case studies will be a valuable resource to researchers and students alike. * Julian Hoxter, Screenwriting Coordinator, San Francisco State University, USA, and editor of Screenwriting *Table of ContentsTable of Contents List of Illustrations Notes on Contributors Acknowledgements 1.
