Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Fashioning James Bond
Book SynopsisFashioning James Bond is the first book to study the costumes and fashions of the James Bond movie franchise, from Sean Connery in 1962''s Dr No to Daniel Craig in Spectre (2015). Llewella Chapman draws on original archival research, close analysis of the costumes and fashion brands featured in the Bond films, interviews with families of tailors and shirt-makers who assisted in creating the look' of James Bond, and considers marketing strategies for the films and tie-in merchandise that promoted the idea of an aspirational James Bond lifestyle'.Addressing each Bond film in turn, Chapman questions why costumes are an important tool for analysing and evaluating film, both in terms of the development of gender and identity in the James Bond film franchise in relation to character, and how it evokes the desire in audiences to become part of a specific lifestyle construct through the wearing of fashions as seen on screen. She researches the agency of the costume departmTrade ReviewIntensely refreshing … This indispensable book opens up the closet on six decades of Bond clothing. Like Bond with his fashion choices, Dr Chapman bends the rules, refusing to confine herself to a single gender. For once, it’s not merely the men’s garments garnering all of the attention … a useful reference work for years to come - for men, women and those who are both, or neither. * Licence to Queer *A brilliantly researched survey that charts changing styles and examines how the Bond "look" influenced movie-goers' lifestyle aspirations and attracted brand placement, and how each 007 actor made those emblematic tuxedos their "own". * The Australian *This book uncovers the ingenuity involved in creating the costumes in James Bond films. From design to performance, it provides a thorough and insightful study of the many ways in which key characters were dressed both to impress and to kill. -- Sarah Street, University of Bristol, UKThis thoroughly researched and original book offers a comprehensive look at the role of fashion as an essential part of the James Bond films from the early 1960s to today. It is engagingly written and shows how sartorial design and elements of mise-en-scène have contributed to the fictional world of the 007 and film production more generally. By contextualizing the use of fashion in the James Bond films, it raises important questions on how the specific choices during the production processes had a seismic effect on costume, gender and identity. -- Tobias Hochscherf, Kiel University of Applied Sciences & Flensburg University, GermanyFashioning James Bond provides a fascinating and comprehensive history of fashion in, and inspired by the James Bond Franchise. The book draws on thorough archival research and as such provides a unique insight into the process of costuming Bond – bringing together production studies, textual analysis and fashion history. -- Claire Jenkins, University of Leicester, UKLlewella Chapman’s Fashioning James Bond is an exciting contribution to Bond studies and beyond in its focus on the vital role played by costume and fashion in film with the accompanying questions of agency, labour and issues of gender that lie behind the image of the smartly tailored suits iconic to the franchise. Fashioning James Bond is meticulously assembled using its sources to give attention to the evolutions in 007's wardrobe and style. In this book Chapman gives us a wonderful historical account of how James Bond and also other characters in the films have been fashioned over the years, to provide detail on the costumes and those involved in bringing them to the screen. With this account Chapman reveals that if we look beneath the surface style and past the Savile Row mythology there is opportunity to closely examine an important part of the world of James Bond. -- Claire Hines, University of East Anglia, UKLike the fine detail on a GoldenEye Brioni suit, Oscar de le Renta gown from Licence to Kill or Angelo Vitucci piece from The Spy Who Loved Me, the glory of Chapman’s project here is in the research stitching and the academic fabric of her execution … From anecdotes about the cutters of London’s W1 to the tailoring wars, the boutique rivalries and the unwieldy eccentrics through to how a Bond actor walks into that world and the ideas bounce about again, this is a cracking study of what is more than brand identity and onscreen heroism. -- Mark O’ConnellIntensely refreshing … This indispensable book opens up the closet on six decades of Bond clothing. John Murray Press Trumbo
Book SynopsisThe Oscar-winning screenwriter who broke the Hollywood blacklist. Soon to be a major motion picture starring BRYAN CRANSTON (Breaking Bad), DIANE LANE (Under The Tuscan Sun), ELLE FANNING (Maleficent), JOHN GOODMAN (Argo), LOUIS C.K. (Louie) and Academy Award winner HELEN MIRREN.Trade ReviewWhat a relief... to read Bruce Cook's Trumbo, a book of clarity, probing intelligence, and considerable grace. Trumbo was a true original. His life has the chronicler it merits. * Nat Hentoff *A gossipy, anecdotal narrative that is fascinating reading * Publishers Weekly *He wrote a brilliant novel and a number of very good movies, and he demolished the Hollywood blacklist almost single-handed, but his greatest achievement was just being the incomparable Trumbo. Bruce Cook has captured the wit, intelligence, and unpredictability that made him one of the truly original people of our time * Ring Lardner Jr, two-time Academy Award-winning screenwriter (WOMAN OF THE YEAR and MASH) *As a study of life under the blacklist the book is superb... Essential reading for anyone interested in either the cinema or recent American history * Library Journal *PRAISE FOR THE FILM TRUMBO'a cracking good story, and Cranston does a great job portraying a man who made great sacrifices for his principles' * New York Post *the hugely entertaining, revealing and powerful portrait of this great screenwriter... an almost bigger-than-life colorful movie about the movies. A screen triumph for all involved, it is especially Bryan Cranston's magnificent work in the title role that towers over everything. * Deadline *Bryan Cranston finally translates his critical acclaim for Breaking Bad into an Oscar-caliber performance in darkly comic Trumbo, playing an eloquent, witty screenwriter who bucked the Hollywood blacklist and triumphed... a highly entertaining biopic... Director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) may seem an unlikely fit for the material, but as Martin Ritt's blacklist comedy The Front (starring Woody Allen) showed and Trumbo reminds us, sometimes comedy can be the best weapon against demagogues * New York Post *Among movies about old moviemakers, Trumbo works better, and has more to say about the world at large, than My Week With Marilyn orHitchcock... Come for the smooth supporting turns by Louis C.K. and Alan Tudyk, the impersonations of icons like John Wayne and Douglas (played with chin-y gusto by Dean O'Gorman) and for Cranston, who fills the air with craggy, growly authority. Stay for the listless yet vital lesson in democracy. * Time *What makes the movie work are the lively performances, both from the supporting cast and from Cranston * Hollywood Reporter *a powerhouse Bryan Cranston... Cranston plays the hell out of Dalton Trumbo... Kudos to director Jay Roach for not wallowing in misery. His movie is bracing and buoyant when Trumbo takes on gossip gorgon Hedda Hopper (a wicked Helen Mirren) and writes cheapies for the King brothers (Stephen Root and a hilarious John Goodman). When Kirk Douglas hired Trumbo to write Spartacus in 1960, the Commie witch hunt was exposed as the sham it was. Witch hunts haven't gone, they've gone global (ask the folks at Charlie Hebdo). Cranston shows us there's nothing retro about watching Trumbo in his glory, speaking truth to power. * Rolling Stone *a timely tale of political paranoia and personal pain... Mirren, in Hopper's extravagant wardrobe, proves once and for all that she is the best at a truly underappreciated, classic Hollywood skill: wearing a hat. * Los Angeles Times *Bryan Cranston owns Trumbo, both character and film, from first word to last. The picture is an incredibly fun leap into a time-machine back into old-fashioned Hollywood, whose good and bad characteristics are twisted to be both endearing and entertaining. But more than this, its fiery central character is a big symbol of something that's missing in present-day Hollywood. Where are the Dalton Trumbos of today? * IndieWire *an important reminder of how democracy can fail ... and the strength of character it takes to fight the system * Variety *Come for Bryan Cranston, stay for Dalton Trumbo * Chicago Reader *A good-spirited, provocative and satisfying look at the great Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo... Bryan Cranston is terrific as the left-wing activist with the right ideas at the wrong time. * Film Journal *Bryan Cranston gives a performance as compelling and complex as the man himself must have been. Cranston's Trumbo is eminently interesting, from his rounded posture and curious eyes to his distinct cadence and diction. Appearing in nearly every frame of the film, Cranston infuses John McNamara's clever screenplay with even more life. * Las Vegas Sun *Bryan Cranston shines as the titular character of Trumbo. Transforming into the role with the old school panache of a seasoned character actor. Armed with his usual quick witted style and knack for bringing those he has played to life, Cranston doesn't pull any punches. Few thespians, save for example Jonnny Depp as Hunter S. Thomson, Philip Seymour Hoffman as Capote or Daniel Day Lewis in any role he undertakes, are we graced with talent which truly transforms into the person they have set out to personify. This is one of those films. * Digital Journal *

McFarland & Co Inc In Theaters Everywhere
Book Synopsis Conflicts among Hollywood studios and exhibitors have been going on for years. At their heart are questions about how films should be released--where, when and at what speed. Both sides of this disagreement are losers, with exhibitors using the law via various Consent Decrees and studios retaliating by tightly controlling output. In the Silent Era, movies were not released nearly as widely as they are now. This book tells the story of how the few became the many. It explores the contraction of the release cycle, the maximization of the marketing dollar, and the democratization of consumer access. It also offers a comprehensive list of wide releases and rebuts much of what previous scholars have found.Trade ReviewBrian Hannan's In Theaters Everywhere, examines movie-releasing patterns from the Silent Era to today’s Internet/Streaming Age, and should become one of those essential industry browses for its background. Crammed full of useful substance, the book homes in on the heart of the exhibitor-distributor relationship concerning particularly the wide release." - Screentrade Magazine

University of Texas Press The Television Code
Book SynopsisThe broadcasting industry's trade association, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB), sought to sanitize television content via its self-regulatory document, the Television Code. The Code covered everything from the stories, images, and sounds of TV programs (no profanity, illicit sex and drinking, negative portrayals of family life and law enforcement officials, or irreverence for God and religion) to the allowable number of commercial minutes per hour of programming. It mandated that broadcasters make time for religious programming and discouraged them from charging for it. And it called for tasteful and accurate coverage of news, public events, and controversial issues. Using archival documents from the Federal Communications Commission, NBC, the NAB, and a television reformer, Senator William Benton, this book explores the run-up to the adoption of the 1952 Television Code from the perspectives of the government, TV viewers, local broadcasters, national networks, and the industry's trade association. Deborah L. Jaramillo analyzes the competing motives and agendas of each of these groups as she builds a convincing case that the NAB actually developed the Television Code to protect commercial television from reformers who wanted more educational programming, as well as from advocates of subscription television, an alternative distribution model to the commercial system. By agreeing to self-censor content that viewers, local stations, and politicians found objectionable, Jaramillo concludes, the NAB helped to ensure that commercial broadcast television would remain the dominant model for decades to come.Trade Review[A] valuable resource for media scholars and graduate students. * Choice *Jaramillo has authored a work with applications across many disciplines, especially history, media law, and even political science. New York University Press The Television Will Be Revolutionized Second
Book SynopsisGo behind the TV screen to explore what is changing, why it is changing, and why the changes mattersMany proclaimed the end of television in the early years of the twenty-first century, as capabilities and features of the boxes that occupied a central space in American living rooms for the preceding fifty years were radically remade. In this revised, second edition of her definitive book, Amanda D. Lotz proves that rumors of the death of television were greatly exaggerated and explores how new distribution and viewing technologies have resurrected the medium. Shifts in the basic practices of making and distributing television have not been hastening its demise, but are redefining what we can do with television, what we expect from it, how we use itin short, revolutionizing it.Television, as both a technology and a tool for cultural storytelling, remains as important today as ever, but it has changed in fundamental ways. The Television Will Be Revolutionized providTrade Review"In thissecond edition, Lotz not only updates us on developments over the past seven years; she digs deeper and thinks harder about the revolutionary changes taking place in the television today. Lotz projected when this book was first published. But to date there has been little research into its audiences: who they were, how they engaged with and responded to it. Nova Science Publishers Inc Digital Television: An Overview
Book SynopsisAmerica, sometimes criticised as a nation of couch potatoes, takes its recreation seriously. Since its debut in the first half of the 20th century, television has held sway over the hearts, minds, and imaginations of billions. The technological advances in recent years have certainly not neglected the TV, and digital television can be seen as the most significant advance sine the introduction of colour television in the 1950s. DTV provides sharper pictures, CD-quality sound, and better colour images. In order to facilitate nation-wide use of this cutting-edge development, several developments have to take place including the production of compelling digital programming, creation of digital carrier systems and consumer adoption of the technology. To this end, the federal government, led by the Federal Communications Commission, has set 2006 as the date for broadcasters to cease analogue broadcasts and convert to digital signals. While no congressional legislation has yet to address DTV specifically, the issue is under constant monitoring, particularly given the stakes involved. Television is too key a component of contemporary American life to overlook. The book provides an overview and analysis of the current state of digital television and its regulatory status. Understanding the topics presented here are important to anyone interested in technology and the advances about to sweep the entertainment industry.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Local Programming on Broadcast, Cable & Satellite
Book SynopsisMost broadcast television stations'' viewing areas extend far beyond the borders of their city of license, and in many cases extend beyond state borders. Under existing FCC rules, which are intended to foster "localism," the licensee''s explicit public interest obligation is limited to serving the needs and interests of viewers within the city of license. Yet, in many cases, the population residing in the city of license is only a small proportion of the total population receiving the station''s signal. Hundreds of thousands of television households in New Jersey (outside New York City and Philadelphia), Delaware (outside Philadelphia), western Connecticut (outside New York City), New Hampshire (outside Boston), Kansas (outside Kansas City, Missouri), Indiana (outside Chicago), Illinois (outside St. Louis), and Kentucky (outside Cincinnati) have little or no access to broadcast television stations with city of license in their own state. The same holds true for several rural states ? including Idaho, Arkansas, and especially Wyoming, where 54.55% of television households are located in television markets outside the state. Although market forces often provide broadcasters the incentive to be responsive to their entire serving area, that is not always the case. This report provides, for each state, detailed county-by-county data on the percentage of television households located in television markets outside the state and whether there are any in-state stations serving those households. The Nielsen Designated Market Areas ("DMAs") also often extend beyond state borders. Local cable operators are required to carry the broadcast signals of television stations located in their DMA. If they are located in a DMA for which the primary city is in another state, and most or all of the television stations in that DMA have city of license in the other state, then the broadcast television signals they must carry will be primarily or entirely from out of state. In some cases, they may not be allowed to carry signals from within the state but outside the DMA to provide news or sports programming of special interest in their state because of network non-duplication, syndicated exclusivity, or sports programming blackout rules or because of private network affiliation contract agreements, or may be discouraged to do so because these signals do not qualify for the royalty-free permanent compulsory copyright license for local broadcast signals. The Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act of 2004 expanded the scope of in-state television signals that satellite operators are permitted (and in some cases required) to offer subscribers. In addition to the signals of those broadcast television stations with city of license within the DMA in which the subscriber is located ("local-into-local" service), satellite operators may offer (subject to certain restrictions) signals from outside the DMA if those signals are "significantly viewed" by those households in the subscriber''s geographic area that only receive their broadcast signals over-the-air (not via cable or satellite). In addition, satellite operators may offer certain subscribers located in New Hampshire, Vermont, Mississippi, and Oregon certain in-state signals from outside the subscribers'' DMA and must offer subscribers in Alaska and Hawaii certain in-state signals.

Book SynopsisLegendary movie producer Larry Kasanoff knows firsthand that massive success requires taking big risks. It means embracing your crazy side: the most unique, boldest, and bravest part of you, and your greatest asset when it comes to creating something truly original. In A Touch of The Madness, Larry uses behind-the-scenes stories of some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, including Terminator 2 Judgment Day, Platoon, True Lies, Dirty Dancing, and the Mortal Kombat film series, to show you the three principles that form the foundation of a thriving career in any industry: Create a great idea that will excite your audience Ask as many times (and as many people) as it takes to get a “yes” Play while you work - don’t forget to have fun with it The current of the river of life will always try to pull you towards the middle, towards complacency and mediocrity. Transworld Publishers Ltd Auntie's War: The BBC during the Second World War
Book Synopsis"An engaging, balanced and thoroughly researched history. It is often a moving and amusing tale containing plenty of mavericks and colourful episodes." (Lawrence James, The Times)Auntie's War is a love letter to radio. The British Broadcasting Corporation is a British institution unlike any other, and its story during the Second World War is also our story. This was Britain’s first total war, engaging the whole nation, and the wireless played a crucial role in it. For the first time, news of the conflict reached every living room – sometimes almost as it happened; and at key moments:- Chamberlain’s announcement of war- The Blitz- The D-Day landings - De Gaulle's broadcasts from exile- Churchill's fighting speechesRadio offered an incomparable tool for propaganda; it was how coded messages, both political and personal, were sent across Europe, and it was a means of sending less than truthful information to the enemy. Edward Stourton is a sharp-eyed, wry and affectionate companion on the BBC’s wartime journey, investigating archives, diaries, letters and memoirs to examine what the BBC was and what it stood for. Edward Stourton's book is an engrossing account of this important time for one of our great institutions, perhaps to be read along side Penelope Fitzgerald's brilliant novel Human Voices. -- Chris Patten, Lord Patten of BarnesThis engaging book about the BBC is full of astonishing incidents, truth versus propaganda and the unspoken heroism of correspondents. Biteback Publishing 20 Things That Would Make the News Better
Book SynopsisWe are at a defining point in the history of news. Following a surge of fake news, clickbait and conspiracy theories, the 2020s have ushered in a welter of existential threats for public service broadcasting. So, where do we go from here? Former Today editor and head of BBC television news Roger Mosey thinks public service broadcasters must buck the trends and in this incisive book he offers twenty core ways in which the news can save itself by getting smarter, sharper, more diverse, more nuanced and less exposed to pummelling by politicians. Mosey sees two possible futures: one in which the incitements of populist demagogues and the passions of social media are ever dominant - or one where we fight hard to retain media that has an interest in the public good and preserves truth, fairness and evidence-based judgements. From one of British broadcasting's most experienced voices comes the definitive exploration of Britain's news output and what must change if we are to avoid a future of uninspiring news, uninformed decision-making and accountability-dodging politicians.

Oneworld Publications War and Peacekeeping: Personal Reflections on
Book SynopsisThere are no winners in war, only losers. We have so far avoided a third world war, but across the globe regional conflicts flare up in a seemingly unstoppable cycle. Who can stand between the armed camps? Over six decades, Martin Bell has stood in eighteen war zones – as a soldier, a reporter and a UNICEF ambassador. Now he looks back on our efforts to keep the peace since the end of the Second World War and the birth of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the new State of Israel. From the failures of Bosnia, Rwanda and South Sudan to nationalism’s resurgence and the distribution of alternative facts across a darkening political landscape, Bell calls for us to learn from past mistakes – before it’s too late.Trade Review‘Martin Bell is the finest foreign correspondent of his generation.’ -- John Laurence, author of The Cat from Hué: A Vietnam War Story‘When I was a young reporter Martin Bell was the TV journalist we all wanted to turn into one day: brave, ferociously principled, unshowy, beautifully spare and articulate, and always uncompromising in preferring what was true to what was spuriously ‘balanced’. These qualities leap off the pages of this powerful and penetrating memoir-come-manifesto. His is a voice of clarity, compassion and towering authority. When I was young I wanted to be just like him. I still do.’ -- Allan Little‘In my view and without doubt Martin Bell was the finest war reporter of his generation. Martin’s personal reflections on not just Bosnia but so many other hotspots of the world flow easily, are hugely perceptive and simply get it. He is a master of emotive depiction and his words bring every situation he describes to life. I have not been able to put this book down since I received it.’ -- Colonel Bob Stewart MP‘Bell writes well and he has witnessed many interesting things in his long career… Martin Bell is clearly and transparently a decent and, in some respects, heroic man.’ -- Adrian Weale, Literary Review

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Stairways to Heaven: Rebuilding the British Film
Book SynopsisWhat has brought about the transformation of the British film industry over the last few decades, to the beginnings of what is arguably a new golden era? In the mid-1980s the industry was in a parlous state. The number of films produced in the UK was tiny. Cinema attendance had dipped to an all-time low, cinema buildings were in a state of disrepair and home video had yet to flourish. Since then, while many business challenges - especially for independent producers and distributors - remain, the industry overall has developed beyond recognition. In recent years, as British films have won Oscars, Cannes Palms and Venice Golden Lions, releases such as Love Actually, Billy Elliot, Skyfall, Paddington and the Harry Potter series have found enormous commercial as well as critical success. The UK industry has encouraged, and benefitted from, a huge amount of inward investment, much of it from the Hollywood studios, but also from the National Lottery via the UK Film Council and BFI. This book portrays the visionaries and officials who were at the helm as a digital media revolution began to reshape the industry. Through vivid accounts based on first-hand interviews of what was happening behind the scenes, film commentator and critic Geoffrey Macnab provides in-depth analysis of how and why the British film industry has risen like a phoenix from the ashes.

Intellect Books Contemporary British and Italian Sound Docudrama:
Book SynopsisThe book focuses on radio and sound docufiction and docudrama through comparative analysis of the British and the Italian output from post war years to the 2010s, from both a historical and formal point of view. It sheds light on a rather neglected area of study providing a systematic survey of the development of the form and of its current status and perspectives, and at the same time constructing viable analytical tools that can be used to investigate individual productions. Considering the different docudramatic output in formats and quantity in the two countries, the book explores case studies from BBC Radio, which continue to air a high number of programmes with a great variety of formats and subgenres, and Italian case studies from both independent bodies and the Radio RAI, whose docudramatic production has declined since the late 1980s. Specifically, the study seeks to explain how radio language in its purely acoustic dimension allows access to unpredictable layers of truth often complementary, when not overtly alternative, to the documental truth of declaredly journalistic or scientific programmes. A well-researched resource for university students, scholars, researchers and educators in media, sociology of media and history. In-depth analysis of an original topic.Table of ContentsIntroduction Preface 1. Footnote Press Ltd Strong Female Character
Book Synopsis'At a time when fluff and gossip reign supreme, Hanna Flint's work is consistently insightful, informative and engaging all at once. I always finish reading it feeling just a tad bit smarter.' Candice Frederick, Huffington Post'One of the smartest pop culture commentators out there.' Toby Moses, GuardianThe leading film critic of her generation offers an eloquent, insightful and humorous reflection on the screen's representation of women and ethnic minorities, revealing how cinema has been the key to understanding herself, her body image and her ambitions as well as the world we live in. A staunch feminist of mixed-race heritage, Hanna has succeeded in an industry not designed for people like her. She interweaves anecdotes from familial and personal experiences - from episodes of messy sex and introspection to the time when actor Vincent D'Onofrio tweeted that Hanna Flint sounded 'like a secret agent' - to offer a critical eye on the screen's representation of women and ethnic minorities. Divided into sections 'Origin Story', 'Coming of Age', 'Adult Material', 'Workplace Drama' and 'Strong Female Character', the book ponders how the creative industries could better reflect our multicultural society.Warm, funny and engaging and full of film-infused lessons, Strong Female Character will appeal to readers of all backgrounds and seeks to help us better see ourselves in our own eyes rather than letting others decide who and what we can be.Trade ReviewUnlike any film book I've read before, Strong Female Character is part-polemic, part-historical and social study of film, and part memoir. Hanna Flint deftly weaves these strands to tell a funny, angry and compelling story for right now: of how the cinematic world built this millennium girl's life. Covering absent fathers, MeToo, first loves, eating disorders and masturbation, there's little Hanna doesn't tackle head on with her signature honesty and humour. The huge authority with which she writes about film is only matched by the emotional power in describing her own experiences. Truly original. A must for any film fan who has wondered how their own life intersects with the art that they love. -- Terri WhiteA really gorgeous and thorough examination on films that have helped shape me into the woman I am today. Hanna's writing is sharp and wholesome and shows not only a forensic knowledge on movies but a deep love and respect for film. This book is a real celebration and ode to women who hold up the art of cinema. -- Mollie GoodfellowA really gorgeous and thorough examination on films that have helped shape me into the woman I am today.
