Silvana Venetian Glassworks: Carla Nasci - Ferruccio
Book SynopsisThis book presents the surprising collection of Venetian glass donated by spouses Carla Nasci and Ferruccio Franzoia to the Carlo Rizzarda Modern Art Gallery in Feltre. A collection of over 800 pieces ranging from the 18th century to today, allowing the viewer to marvel, in particular, at the Murano production and its great glassmakers. A first nucleus includes the elegant Liberty and Déco glasses produced by Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. in the twenties: the artistic director of the company was Vittorio Zecchin, one of the most fascinating personalities working in Venice between the First World War and the decade later, who with his elegant, transparent blown glass inspired by the Renaissance, marked a decisive turning point in contemporary Murano production. A second group is represented by the artifacts produced between 1925 and 1960 referable to the figure of Carlo Scarpa, creator of highly successful, innovative glass shapes and fabrics, who collaborated respectively with the Cappellini company since 1926 and with Venini since 1932, together with a mix of products from other companies and authors active in the lagoon. The third type of documented artifacts is that of table glasses: consumer objects destined for ephemeral use and therefore an important testimony of taste and customs.

Silvana Christina Quarles: Collapsed Time
Book SynopsisIn Collapsed Time, Christina Quarles (Chicago, 1985) shows an installation that occupies the entire exhibition space and exhibits her paintings alongside works from the Nationalgalerie collection. Quarles confronts several decades of diverse forms of artistic practices, from photography and sculpture to video and performance, that have dealt with notions of physical and psychological confinement, and their impact on the representation of the human body. The formal language of Quarles’ paintings explores the experience of living in a racialised, queer body. Her figures contend with the boundaries of identity, as they intervene with complex patterns and planes. The catalogue features a curatorial essay by Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, an extended interview with Christina Quarles and a contribution by Jillian Hernandez, Associate Professor at the Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies Research, University of Florida, USA. Silvana Olafur Eliasson
Book SynopsisThe Curious Desert was the first solo exhibition of Olafur Eliasson's work in the Gulf region, staged in March 2023.The exhibition brought together a dozen new site-specific installations located in the desert, near the Al Thakhira Mangrove in Northern Qatar, and an extensive gallery presentation at the National Museum of Qatar of artworks created over the artist's career. The outdoor installation consisted of 12 temporary pavilions that Eliasson considers to form an artistic laboratory in the desert. Many of the experiments inside the pavilions utilised natural phenomena, such as wind, water, and sunlight, to create artworks that emerged over the course of the day or, as the seasons change, over the duration of the exhibition. At the National Museum of Qatar, the gallery exhibition featured a variety of artworks from different periods of Eliasson's career and in a wide range of media, including expansive light installations, complex geometric models, photo series from Iceland, watercolours, optical devices and an extensive map of the research areas that occupy the artist and his studio. The themes that run throughout the two-part exhibition relate to the broad interests expressed in Eliasson's wider practice.Text by Olafur Eliasson, Bouthayna Baltaji, Lina Patmali, Aspa D. Forma Edizioni Il Tempio. La nascita dell'Eidos: The Temple.
Book SynopsisBetween 1970 and 1971, Italian artists Paolo Scheggi and Vincenzo Agnetti worked together on a project they called The Temple. Birth of Eidos. Due to Scheggi’s untimely death in 1971 at the age of 31, the project remained unfinished. These previously unpublished preparatory sketches, drawings, and notes, which were shown at the Museo Novecento in Florence, are examined in essays by Ilaria Bignotti and Bruno Corà and texts by Germana Agnetti and Cosima Scheggi, daughters of the two artists and directors of their respective archives. The concept of the project was to create a sacred place, a temple, to contain linguistic objects representing primary forms of community, subjectivity and power, linking these with the artistic and theoretical research the two artists were conducting at the time. Agnetti died 10 years after his friend and colleague. His research followed a new route but remained closely linked with that idea born in 1968, that “any work, any artistic object, any gesture is a critical reminder of reality and our existence”. (Germana Agnetti).

Five Continents Editions Nicolas Party: L’Heure Mauve
Book SynopsisThe volume Nicolas Party L’Heure Mauve collects a vast visual epic in which Party plays a variety of roles, sometimes impersonating the artist, others the scenographer, the conservator, or the sculptor. His work, and the title of the show, are inspired by L’Heure Mauve, a piece created in 1921 by the Canadian painter Ozlas Leduc that highlights the different interpretations given to the relationship between man and nature throughout the history of art. The result is a constantly changing natural environment: it can be a place full of danger and catastrophe, a territory to be conquered, an expanse disseminated with ancient ruins, or even silences where there are no traces of human presence. Nature finally becomes the theatre for the Anthropocene, its connection with humanity by now inextricable, and the passing of time and the finiteness of existence make way for a feeling of melancholy. Our artist interrogates the world’s image, and he does so by dialoguing very concretely with the spaces and the works belonging to the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. The present volume reflects this personal evolution by employing a unique graphic framework and a packaging that is as precious as its contents. Mondadori Electa Villa Albani Torlonia: The Cradle of
Book SynopsisVilla Albani Torlonia, with its collections, the Italian garden, and the hemicycle of the Kaffeehaus, is a sublime testimony of that particular antiquarian taste which came to the fore in the mid-eighteenth century, that for which Rome became a favourite destination on the Grand Tour. The classicist dream of Cardinal Alessandro Albani (1692 1779), was preserved thanks to the Torlonia family, who purchased the villa in 1866, enlarging the collection and the gardens and restoring the most important cardinal residence of the eighteenth century. More than 300 images by the great Italian master Massimo Listri recount the history of this extraordinary cultural heritage for the very first time. An immersive journey leads the reader between its collections of ancient masterpieces. Statues, bas-reliefs, and fountains are ensconced between the various buildings and gardens of the villa in a composition of environments, landscapes, and works of art forever waiting to be discovered.

Cannibal/Hannibal Publishers The Avant-Garde in Georgia: 1900–1936
Book SynopsisIn the turbulent global context following the fall of the Russian Empire and the October Revolution, Georgia declared its independence in 1918. Between then and the beginning of Soviet rule in 1921, an Avant-Garde creative scene burgeoned. Artists met, mainly in the many taverns and cafés in Kutaisi and the capital Tbilisi, to organise multidisciplinary events. Their frequent collaborations and interactions, which bore the imprint of Georgian tradition and Western and Eastern influences, took various forms: paintings, drawings, films, photos, performances and typographical experiments. Divergent movements such as Symbolism/Neo-Symbolism, Futurism, Dadaism, Zaum, Expressionism, Cubism and Cubo-Futurism existed side by side in unprecedented creative turbulence. This book tells the unknown story of a vibrant Avant-Garde in the Caucasus, born in the taverns of Tbilisi – artistic laboratories where anything was possible, but where Soviet censorship lurked. Extensively illustrated with works by Elene Akhvlediani, Gigo Gabashvili, Irakli Gamrekeli, Lado Gudiashvili, David Kakabadze, Petre Otskheli, Niko Pirosmanashvili, Ilia and Kirile Zdanevich, and many others.Table of Contents5 Preface I Thea Tsulukiani 7 Preface II Philippe Vlerick 9 Introduction Nana Kipiani, Irine Jorjadze and Tea Tabatadze 13 First Chapter: 1832–1900 14 How We Became Modernists Nana Kipiani 69 Second Chapter: 1900–1921 70 Avant-Garde on 41° (Tbilisi) Nana Kipiani 157 Third Chapter: 1921–1936 158 Made Pictures A Conversation with Levan Chogoshvili, Nana Kipiani, Ketevan Shavgulidze and Irine Jorjadze 281 Biographies

Five Continents Editions Outsider Art of Canada: What else can art be
Book Synopsis“Outsider art” is the name given to the idiosyncratic work of self-taught creators who are driven to use their own invented visual language to bring forth images from their imaginations. It is outside the continuum of art history, outside the boundaries of art recognised by established art institutions, and outside the collective discourse of the mainstream art world. This book examines the underlying biases, ideologies, and social factors that inform the various approaches to outsider art, including myths surrounding mental illness, movements toward social inclusion, and movements away from the marginalising effect of labels. Most importantly, Outsider Art of Canada explores how we think about art and who is entitled to call themselves an artist. In this survey dedicated to outsider art in Canada, the first of its kind, the artists introduced have much to tell us about their need to create, unapologetically and without regard to public opinion.

Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Executions: 700 Years of Public Punishment in
Book SynopsisA fascinating record of how London and Londoners were shaped by nearly 700 years of public executions. More frequent in London than in any other city or town in Britain, these morbid spectacles often attracted tens of thousands of onlookers at locations across the capital and were a major part of Londoners' lives for centuries. From Smithfield to Kennington, Tyburn to Newgate Prison, public executions became embedded in London’s landscape and people’s lives. Even today, hints of this dark chapter in London’s history can still be seen across the city. Featuring the lives and legacies of those who died or who witnessed public executions first hand from 1196 to 1868, this book tells the rarely told and often tragic human stories behind these events. It includes a range of fascinating objects, paintings and documents, many from the Museum of London’s collections, such as the vest said to have been worn by King Charles I when he was executed, portraits of ‘celebrity criminals’, and last letters of the condemned. From the sites of execution to the thriving ‘gallows’ economy, the book reveals the role that Londoners played as both spectators and participants in this most public demonstration of state power over the life and death of its citizens.Trade ReviewIt’s a fantastic new book in its own right and well worth checking out. * History Answers *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Frans Hals: The Male Portrait
Book SynopsisThis is the first book to concentrate on Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals’s highly innovative approach to male portraiture. Frans Hals is one of the greatest portrait painters of all time and, together with Rembrandt, is one of the most eminent seventeenth-century Dutch artists. Published to coincide with the Wallace Collection’s exhibition of the same name, Frans Hals: The Male Portrait explores the artist’s highly innovative approach to male portraiture, from the beginning of his career in the 1610s until the end of his life in 1666. Through pose, expression and virtuosic painterly technique, Hals revolutionised the male portrait into something entirely new and fresh, capturing and revealing his sitters’ characters like no one else before him. This book includes the first in-depth study of Hals’s great masterpiece, The Laughing Cavalier, from 1624. The extravagantly dressed young man, confidently posed with his left arm akimbo in the extreme foreground of the picture and seemingly penetrating into the viewer’s space, has been charming audiences for over a century. Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd Inspiring Walt Disney: The Animation of French
Book SynopsisAccompanying an exhibition at the Wallace Collection, Inspiring Walt Disney explores the influences of the art and architecture of France on Walt Disney and his studio artists, highlighting in particular the Disney classics of hand-drawn animation, Cinderella (1950) and Beauty and the Beast (1991). Pairing preparatory material from these films – including concept art for talking furniture and fairy-tale castles – with masterpieces from the eighteenth century reveals hidden sources of inspiration and allows us to appreciate the extraordinary talents behind Disney animated films and French decorative arts. Just as the dynamic, twisting movements of the Rococo sought to breathe life into what was essentially inanimate – silver, porcelain, furniture – so too did Disney animators seek to create the illusion of movement, action and emotion. Illustrated with innovative works by artists such as Mary Blair, Hans Bacher and Peter J. Hall, and the animated and anthropomorphic furniture, Sèvres porcelain and gilt bronze of rococo designers, the catalogue explores the shared creative roots of these two seemingly disparate artistic realms and looks to revitalise the feelings of excitement, awe and marvel, which both eighteenth-century craftsmen and Disney animators sought to spark in their audiences.Table of ContentsForeword Inspiring Walt Disney - Helen Jacobsen Selected Works - Helen Jacobsen with Wolf Burchard The Discovery of Europe Early Animation Cinderella Architecture of the Imagination The Swing Eighteenth-Century Dress Animating the Inanimate Further Reading Picture Credits Index

Book SynopsisThis fantastic book showcases the prestigious Embroiderers’ Guild’s huge collection of embroidered birds through the ages. Featuring photographs taken especially for the book, items are shown in full along with detailed images that show off the stunning birds at their best.Trade ReviewThis fabulous book highlights some of the exquisite works done using birds as their inspiration. This aesthetic book provides an eye opener into the surprisingly wide-ranging, attractive and interesting embroideries which can be created showcasing birds. Embroidered Treasures: Birds provides a real learning experience allied to the sheer pleasure of viewing the superbly photographed examples Dr Collinge has selected from the Collection. The embroideries range from small mats, sachets and panels through bags, tea cosies and cushion covers to wall hangings, sleeve bands and samplers. * SEW Region Magazine (December 2019) *You'll be amazed by the stunning array of colours inside this book! Sewing enthusiasts will be blown away by the history of the embroiderer's guild and its collection - learn all about the use of metal thread, birds in art and every stitch variation you could possibly think of! * Sew Magazine (December 2018) *Following on from Embroidered Treasures Flowers, which examined floral embroidery, Annette Collinge turns her attention to our feathered friends, selecting examples that intrigue as well as inspire. She highlights pieces from cultures around the world, dating from the 17th century to the modern era - from realist renderings to fanciful interpretations, from practical items to contemporary artworks - and which take in a whole wealth of techniques from Berlin wool work to modern machine embroidery. The Guild was founded in 1906 and since then its collection, now housed at Bucks Co Museum, has grown substantially. This book offers amazing insight into its many riches. * Embroidery, The Textile Art Magazine (Nov/Dec 2018) *Subtitled 'Exquisite Needlework of the Embroiderers' Guild Collection', this book showcases the best embroidered birds from the extensive collection. The embroideries cover a period dating from the 17th century to the present day. From abstract to naturalistic, the variety is wonderful and the book covers many forms of embroidery from crewelwork to contemporary. The imagination, skill and detail in portraying birds will provide much inspiration to everyone interested in this subject. There is a brief history of the Embroiderers' Guild followed by twelve chapters: Monochrome Embroidery; Metal Thread; Applied Materials; Machine Embroidery; Silk Embroidery; Evenweave Backgrounds; Bags; Art; Samplers; Fanciful; Birds From Many Lands and finally Stitches. A short paragraph of text opens each section, with each photographed piece of work having a title such as 'Crewelwork Panel' and descriptive text plus technique, date, place and size highlighted in a box. On some pieces, it also gives the maker's name and who gifted the piece to the collection. All pieces have a EG number. I found the techniques of most interest, but this is not a book of techniques - it merely informs us of the technique used. Work as varied as rug hooking, felt applique and numerous embroidery techniques are included from all over the world. There is some overlap of the chapters, for in Chapter One on Monochrome, you will find Metal Thread and Silk Embroidery even though these have chapters of their own. Almost every manner of bird is to be found. This is a wonderful resource on how birds have been used to inspire embroidery over the centuries. Recommended. -- Karen Platt * www.karenplatt.co.uk *Way back in January, I reviewed the book, Embroidered Treasures: Flowers, a wonderful compilation of embroidery pieces held by the Embroiderers’ Guild of the UK. Like the Flowers book, Embroidered Treasures: Birds promises to be an exciting and inspiring look at a wide array of embroidery projects from different eras that feature our feathered friends. If you love birds and you love embroidery, and if you’re fascinated by the history of embroidery, you will love having this book in your library! Better yet, it is such a pretty book that it doesn’t need to be consigned to a bookshelf. It’s a perfect “coffee table” book, one that you can pick up and browse through at leisure, gleaning striking bursts of beauty and helpful bits of information every time you meander through it. I’ve had the pleasure of perusing an advanced copy of the book, thanks to Search Press, and it is everything you’d want – beautiful, informative, and inspiring! Throughout the book, you’ll find embroidered birds from a wide spectrum of artistic eras, covering a wide variety of techniques. All sorts of birds populate the book, from stylized birds to realistic renditions of birds in needlework. With each featured embroidery, you’ll find dates, provenance, and all the details of techniques and materials used to create the embroidery. What I love about this new series of books from the Embroiderers’ Guild of the UK is that you can learn much from each book, just by studying the pieces in it. No, it’s not an instructional project book – you won’t learn how to recreate, step-by-step, the embroidery pieces you see. But you will learn a lot about the history and development of embroidery, and you’ll see, at a glance, what kinds of techniques can be used to produce a certain look or style of embroidery. This is very helpful, if you have ideas in mind for a project, but you’re not sure what techniques to use to get the look you want. Soooo…. bird lovers, historical needlework buffs, and general embroidery enthusiasts – this book’s for you! -- Mary Corbet * www.needlenthread.com *I was very keen to read this book being a member of the Embroiderers' Guild for about 25 years and a lover of bird embroideries in particular. The book does not disappoint. Stunning photography enhances every page with information about each piece, the technique, the date and place of origin, together with the actual size of the piece of work. It is pure joy discovering how each piece was formed in a plethora of techniques, including works gathered from across the world across the centuries up to the present-day including birds by the author Dr. Annette Collinge. Techniques are well explained but not in great depth so the book means you can dip into it for short or long spells of reading time. It is perfect to inspire you in making your own work or simply just to enjoy the skill and craftsmanship of the embroideries. As others have commented, it is not a book to tell you step by step how to do it yourself; it is a book to love for its amazing photography and know that it will give you hours of enjoyment by reading it. You cannot fail to be inspired by looking through this book, whether your love is for hand or machine embroidery, mixed media or traditional - this book has it all. Highly recommended. -- Jude Lovatt * Amazon *If you love birds and love embroidery, I highly recommend this book. It’s full of colourful eye candy in the form of quality images, along with interesting and useful text relating to the pieces. It covers a wide range of embroidery techniques and provides inspiration to anyone interested in the subject. It’s a wonderful resource book showing how birds have been used to inspire embroideries over the years. A definite favourite in my collection. -- Gwenda Culkin * Amazon *Beautiful coffee table book, full colour pictures and history of embroidery. Doesn’t have patterns or how to do any of the stitching but love it. -- Ellen Rose Perkins * Amazon *Lovely informative book, well written with excellent photography. -- Diana Connor * Customer review *'Embroidered Treasures - Birds' by Dr. Annette Collinge is truly a treasure to behold. The artwork and skill are absolutely stunning and something I imagine all artists strive to work towards with their own creative work. This book is made on behalf of the Embroiderers' Guild and displays some beautiful examples of the creativity of people through time. It has a large table of contents split into different sections, e.g. on bags, on silk, samplers, metal threads, etc. It also has an index. Each piece has an EG number, a date, size and a few paragraphs about the piece. The pieces range from intermediate to way, way, way advanced! It is a shame there are no mini tutorials in the book, but this is purely showing the historical pieces they have in their collection. I absolutely love the peacock piece on page 23, and the Berlin work Budgerigar on page 90. It gives you so much inspiration when you look at the pieces and how they have included birds in so many different ways. I love the Cockerel Sleeve Band with the two cockerels looking at each other, hand embroidered in bold silk threads. I would highly recommend this book if you enjoy looking at embroidery and are looking for some inspiration - there is a lot to be had from this book. 10/10 -- Kaiserin Maggs * Amazon *I loved the photography in this book and there are some exquisite pieces of work in it. If you want a reference book containing stunning pieces of art, then this is it. It’s also very informative about the history of embroidery and the different techniques used throughout the ages and from around the world. I especially liked the collage owl kit. The page explains how embroidery kits were very popular in the 1970’s and 1980’s and reminded me of my first embroidery project that I completed in the 80’s as a child. If you are unable to attend an exhibition, then this is the next best thing. -- Joanne Gardener * Amazon *This is such an informative book with some stunning photography of many pieces from the Embroidery Guild's collection that feature birds. Each piece is accompanied by information on technique, date of make and the area that it comes from. This is not a technique book that will teach you how to create these wonderful pieces, but certainly such a lot of inspiration here that will encourage you to experiment and find your own project to work on. As a needlecrafter and general crafter this book is right up my street, however it's the type of book to leave readily available as non crafters will find it just as interesting. It was interesting to see my husband, definitely a non crafter, pick the book up for a token flick through and half an hour later he was still engrossed and commenting on the photographs. Love it and will be looking out for more. -- Louise Blackah * Amazon *I have received my embroidered birds’ books. I am so pleased with the look of the covers, which are bright, colourful and eye-catching. The instructions are so clear and helpful that anyone can understand. Also, some are for beginners and you can do more intricate ones as you feel able. Lovely templates too. The birds are done in such beautiful colours, some of which I would never have thought of putting together which is so helpful as I am not good at selecting colours to put together. Great book all round well worth buying. -- Pam Butterfield * Facebook *Table of ContentsHistory of the Embroiderers' Guild and Its Collection Introduction Embroidered in Monochrome The Use of Metal Thread Applied Materials Made by Machine Embroidered in Silk Embroidery on Even-weave Backgrounds Embroidery on Bags Birds as Art Samplers and Samples Fanciful Birds Birds from Many Lands Stitches and More Stitches Index

Scala Arts & Heritage Publishers Ltd The Royal Castle Warsaw: Director's Choice
Book SynopsisThe Royal Castle in Warsaw is one of the most important museums-residences in Poland. Its history and the provenance of its collections are extremely complex and symbolise the turbulent history of the country. The last king of Poland, Stanisław August, created a great collection of works of art and commissioned the interior design in a classicist style. With the loss of independence by Poland, works of art and furnishings were transported to Russia, then later returned under the Treaty of Riga in 1921. Looted by the Germans during World War II, the Castle was blown up in 1944. The castle finished being rebuilt in 1984 and today is a museum of interiors and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highlights of the Castle’s collections include paintings by Rembrandt and Canaletto as well as valuable objects of decorative arts and historical memorabilia, showcased in this latest Director’s Choice with the expertise of Director Wojciech Fałkowski.

D Giles Ltd Paolo Veneziano's Coronation of the Virgin
Book SynopsisAccording to Nico Muhly, the Coronation of the Virgin is "a panel of pure theatre and music". Painted in 1358 by the Venetian artist Paolo Veneziano (ca. 1295-1362), the apocryphal story of the Virgin's death is depicted in one of the artist's most thrilling and important works. Paolo Veneziano presents the Virgin and Christ in sumptuous garments and surrounded by a choir of angels playing portable organs, lutes, trumpets, tambourines, and other instruments. The angels symbolize the harmony of the universe; their instruments are the authentic components of a medieval orchestra, accurately depicted and correctly held and played. The decorative sparkle of the surface - with its brilliant, expensive colours, patterned textiles, and lavish gold leaf - reflects the Venetians' love of luxury, a taste that enriches much of 14th- and 15th-century architecture in Venice.Table of ContentsDirector's Foreword by Ian Wardropper; Acknowledgments; Contribution by Nico Muhly; Essay by Xavier F.
