Cambridge University Press Ethics as a Weapon of War

Book SynopsisWhat role does ethics play in modern-day warfare? Is it possible for ethics and militarism to exist hand-in-hand? James Eastwood examines the Israeli military and its claim to be ''the most moral army in the world''. This claim has been strongly contested by human rights bodies and international institutions in their analysis of recent military engagements in the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon. Yet at the same time, many in Israel believe this claim, including the general public, military personnel and politicians. Compiled from extensive research including interviews with soldiers, Eastwood unpacks the ethical pedagogy of the Israeli military, as well as soldier-led activism which voices a moral critique, and argues that the belief in moral warfare doesn''t exist separately from the growing violence of Israel''s occupation. This book is ideal for those interested in military ethics and Israeli politics, and provides crucial in-depth analysis for students and researchers alike.Table of ContentsIntroduction: 'the most moral army in the world'; 1. Militarising the ethical turn; 2. 'The Spirit of the IDF'; 3. 'Keeping a human image': military ethical pedagogy in the IDF; 4. 'Meaningful service': ethics and pedagogy at pre-military academies in Israel; 5. Between guilt and anxiety: collecting testimony in Breaking the Silence; 6. 'Creating a moral conversation': the public activism of Breaking the Silence; Conclusion: towards an anti-militarist ethics.

Oxford University Press Inc Do Morals Matter Presidents and Foreign Policy

Book SynopsisA concise yet penetrating analysis of how modern American presidents have--and have not--incorporated ethics into their foreign policy.Americans constantly make moral judgments about presidents and foreign policy. Unfortunately, many of these assessments are poorly thought through. In Do Morals Matter?, Joseph S. Nye, Jr. provides a concise yet penetrating analysis of the role of ethics in US foreign policy since Franklin Delano Roosevelt''s presidency onward. Nye works through each presidency from FDR to Trump and scores their foreign policy on three ethical dimensions: their intentions, the means they used, and the consequences of their decisions. He also evaluates their leadership qualities, elaborating on which approaches work and which ones do not. Regardless of a president''s policy preference, Nye shows that each one was not fully constrained by the structure of the system and actually had choices. Since we so often apply moral reasoning to foreign policy, Nye suggests how to do it better. Most importantly, he shows that presidents need to factor in both the political context and the availability of resources when deciding how to implement an ethical policy-especially in a future international system that presents not only great power competition from China and Russia, but a host of additional transnational threats.Trade Review...highly recommended... * Mehmet Akif Koç, Insight Turkey *Analysing the ethics of US foreign policy under each presidential administration since 1945, Nye scores the policies of each presidency according to their intentions, the means they used and their consequences. He examines each president's leadership qualities and considers how US foreign policy might best address contemporary challenges such as great-power competi-tion and climate change. * Survival: Global Politics and Strategy *In times like these, it is important to appreciate the role that moral reasoning should play in foreign policy. This is especially true in a democracy, where sustaining global involvement requires support from citizens. Joe Nye is one of our foremost and engaging analysts of American diplomacy, and in this book he provides a clear-eyed guide for reengaging our moral compass. * Walter Isaacson, Distinguished Fellow and Former CEO, Aspen Institute, and Professor of History, Tulane University *From the doyen of US foreign policy thinkers, a powerful warning against domestic populist politics, which not only narrow our moral vision but defeat US purposes around the world. * O.A. Westad, Yale University *With characteristic insight and precision, Joseph Nye raises tough questions of how much ethics should shape a nation's foreign policy, provides a sweeping review of how past presidents have embraced or rejected ethical imperatives, and constructs a helpful scorecard for judging future presidents. This book takes on even greater significance as a growing number of nations-led by the U.S.-nakedly put self interest first. * David Gergen, CNN Senior Political Analyst, and Founding Director, Harvard Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership *In Do Morals Matter? Joseph S. Nye argues persuasively that in foreign policy, good intentions must be accompanied by the use of appropriate means that generate beneficial consequences. His astute analysis of American presidents since World War II demonstrates that 'contextual intelligence' is crucial for moral principles to yield good results. * Robert O. Keohane, Princeton University *A lucid, thoughtful and original examination of the role morality plays as American presidents shape their foreign policy. As Professor Nye shows convincingly in this highly readable book, leaders and citizens alike make assumptions, decisions and judgments which reflect their own views about what is good and bad. Yet again he has contributed much to our better understanding of international relations. * Margaret MacMillan, Emeritus Professor of International History, University of Oxford *Table of ContentsChapter 1: American Foreign Policy Ethical Traditions Chapter 2: What is a Moral Foreign Policy? Book SynopsisThe concept of obscenity is an ancient one. But as Joan deJean suggests, its modern form, the same that today's politicians decry, was invented in 17th century France. This work also casts a fresh light on the mythical link between sexual impropriety and all things French.Trade Review"Joan DeJean's new book is a fascinating study that like so much of her work identifies some of the sources of our own modernity in practices and concepts that emerged and took characteristic form in seventeenth-century France. It is masterfully written, beautifully conceived, convincingly argued, tellingly organized, and a delight to read." - Ross Chambers, author of The Writing of Melancholy: Modes of Opposition in Early French Modernism

Paying attention? Genuinely interested? The answer, writes Alex Pentland in Honest Signals, is that subtle patterns in how we interact with other people reveal our attitudes toward them. These unconscious social signals are not just a back channel or a complement to our conscious language; they form a separate communication network. Biologically based “honest signaling,” evolved from ancient primate signaling mechanisms, offers an unmatched window into our intentions, goals, and values. If we understand this ancient channel of communication, Pentland claims, we can accurately predict the outcomes of situations ranging from job interviews to first dates.Pentland, an MIT professor, has used a specially designed digital sensor worn like an ID badge—a “sociometerR

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisA New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice Drawing on never-before-published original source detail, the epic story of two of the most consequential, and largely forgotten, moments in Supreme Court history.Trade Review"Explaining Furman and its implications can be tricky, but Evan Mandery… has done both with remarkable ease. Mandery knows how to tell a story, and he’s done some terrific research." -- David Oshinsky - New York Times Book Review"Important…. Remarkable." -- Andrew Cohen - The Atlantic"If someone described a book about the Supreme Court’s decisions to strike down and then reinstate the death penalty as thrilling, would you believe her? You should; that’s exactly what A Wild Justice is. Reading it, you get swept up in the details of the court cases that determined capital punishment’s upheaval and rapid resurrection over the course of two decades. This is thanks to Mandery’s skill for whittling down complex legal situations to punchy play-by-plays." -- Jen Vafidis - The Daily Beast"Mandery has managed to turn textbook-style legal history into cinematic scenes with memorable characters." -- Maurice Chammah - Austin-American Statesman"Mandery has at once written one of the very best books I have ever read not only on the Supreme Court as an institution, but also on the death penalty itself…. One keeps turning the pages in order to find out what happens next." -- Sanford Levinson - History Book Club"The fascinating story of the abolition of the death penalty—and its restoration—had found its ideal narrator in Evan Mandery. At once a page turner and a work of serious scholarship, A Wild Justice puts you inside the justices' deliberations and the advocates’ strategizing. Required reading for anyone who cares about the Supreme Court and how it shapes our lives." -- Noah Feldman, author of The Broken Constitution"With a powerful story and an exceptional cast of characters—including Arthur Goldberg, Alan Dershowitz, and Robert Bork at their best—A Wild Justice is a rare achievement. At once entertaining and deeply instructive, it is a piece of legal history that grapples brilliantly with capital punishment, one of the fundamental issues of American justice." -- Sean Wilentz, author of The Rise of American Democracy: Jefferson to Lincoln"A Wild Justice is sensational—a revealing and illuminating behind-the-scenes look at one of the most important chapters in the history of the Supreme Court. After reading it, you may never look at the death penalty, or the justices, the same way again." -- Jeffrey Toobin, author of The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court"It takes a gifted writer to craft a thriller out of the efforts to have capital punishment declared unconstitutional, but Mandery pulls it off in this intellectual page-turner." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)"Outstanding in every respect." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"Mandery has written a tour de force examination of how the U.S. Supreme Court from 1963 to 1977 ruled on death penalty issues…this book is revelatory. Unlike Bob Woodward’s The Brethren and Jeffrey Toobin’s The Nine, it shows how all the court players (politicians, clerks, litigants) had a part in its capital punishment decisions…. As much a sociological study as a discussion of the law, this volume is well written and illuminating." -- Library Journal (starred review)"He portrays the complex personalities behind the arguments on both sides and a court as sensitive to political tides as moral and philosophical concerns on an issue that continues to remain controversial." -- Booklist

Book SynopsisAn astonishingly brave memoir of prostitution and its lingering influence on a woman’s psyche and life.Trade Review"This is surely the best, most personal, profound, eye-opening book ever written about prostitution—irrefutable proof of why it should NEVER be legalized." -- Jane Fonda"People who are working to end sexual exploitation will take heart from her example of transformation and an insistence on basic human dignity." -- President Jimmy Carter"Rachel Moran takes us where no readers have ever gone: into the deep hell of being prostituted… Anyone who believes "sex work" is chosen or a job like any other should read Paid For for its exposure of misinformation and myths alone. But the book is more: Moran writes so well that her story will scorch your heart…." -- Robin Morgan"No amount of theory from those who have never been prostituted can replace the truth and power of experience. Rachel Moran's Paid For should be required reading in courses on human rights, in police training and law schools, and in sex education courses that separate welcome sex from body invasion." -- Gloria Steinem"Paid For fuses the memoirist's lived poignancy with the philosopher's conceptual sophistication. The result is riveting, compelling, incontestable. Impossible to put down. " -- Catharine A. MacKinnon, law professor, University of Michigan and Harvard University"As a survivor, I can say Paid For got to the heart of what sex-trafficked and prostituted women face on a daily basis. Rachel speaks for those survivors who can’t speak for themselves, and for those who have been lost to the life." -- Vednita Carter, Founder and Executive Director, Breaking Free"Paid For is the political sword we desperately need to slay once and for all the myths and fairytales surrounding the sex trade. Sojourner Truth once said that truth is powerful and it prevails. Rachel Moran's earth-shaking book embodies just that." -- Taina Bien-Aimé, Executive Director, Coalition Against Trafficking in Women"Rachel Moran demolishes the “Pretty Woman” myth with the stark reality of the lived experience of her young years in prostitution. This memoir makes a strong case for the Nordic model law that criminalizes the buyers whose money drives the trade that treats women as objects for sale." -- Terry O'Neill, President, National Organization for Women

Book SynopsisTrade ReviewDuring the early days of the so-called ‘war on drugs,’ possession of marijuana could sometimes lead to a decades-long criminal sentence. In time, the need for reconsideration, and proportionality in sentencing, became apparent. The contemporary sentencing approach to child pornography offenses, including possession, requires an analogous re-examination. This text does an outstanding job of addressing the rationale for sentencing in child pornography cases, and in suggesting the need for potential change, in a thorough, scholarly, and thought-provoking manner.”—Fred S. Berlin, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine ~""Our modern digital world has increased exponentially the constitutional, social, and practical issues implicated by criminal laws and policies surrounding child pornography. University of Massachusetts Press Mediating Morality: The Politics of Teen

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe approach the United States has taken to addressing teen pregnancy— a ubiquitous concern in teen education and perennial topic in popular culture— has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Specifically since the radical overhaul of welfare policy in 1996, Clare Daniel argues, teen pregnancy, previously regarded as a social problem requiring public solutions, is seen as an individual failure on the part of the teens involved. Daniel investigates coordinated teen pregnancy pre- vention efforts within federal political discourse, along with public policy, popular culture, national advocacy, and local initiatives, revealing the evidence of this transformation. In the 1970s and 1980s, political leaders from both parties used teen pregnancy to strengthen their attacks on racialized impoverished communities. With a new welfare policy in 1996 that rhetoric moved toward blaming teen pregnancy— seemingly in a race- and class- neutral way— on the teens who engaged in sex prematurely and irresponsibly. Daniel effectively illustrates that the construction of teen pregnancy as an individual’s problem has been a key component in a neoliberal agenda that frees the government from the responsibility of addressing systemic problems of poverty, lack of access to education, ongoing structural racism, and more.Trade Review“Anyone who is doing research on teen pregnancy— from any perspective— should read this book, including people who might not usually engage in thinking about theories like intimate citizenship, biopolitics, and neoliberalism. Daniel writes about these topics in a very approachable fashion.” — Tasha n. Dubriwny, author of The Vulnerable Empowered Woman: Feminism, Postfeminism, and Women’s Health“Mediating Morality is lucidly written, meticulously researched, and thoughtfully constructed. It is an important contribution to scholars across disciplines working on women’s reproduction, youth cultures, media studies, and contemporary neoliberal discourses. I also hope it falls into the hands of policy- makers, social activists, and nonprofit leaders because it has the potential to change current framings of teen pregnancy and sex education.” — Karen Weingarten, author of Abortion in the American Imagination: Before Life and Choice, 1880–1940

Book Synopsis'Compelling, illuminating and often confronting, On Eating Meat is a brilliant blend of a gastronome's passion with forensic research into the sources of the meat we eat. Matthew Evans brings his unflinching honesty - and a farmer's hands-on experience - to the question of how to be an ethical carnivore.' Hugh Mackay 'Intellectually thrilling - a book that challenges both vegans and carnivores in the battle for a new ethics of eating. This book will leave you surprised, engrossed and sometimes shocked - whatever your food choices.' Richard GloverHow can 160,000 deaths in one day constitute a 'medium-sized operation'? Think beef is killing the world? What about asparagus farms? Or golf? Eat dairy? You'd better eat veal, too. Going vegan might be all the rage, but the fact is the world has an ever-growing, insatiable appetite for meat - especially cheap meat. Former food critic and chef, now farmer and restaurateur Matthew Evans grapples with the thorny issues around the ways we produce and consume animals. From feedlots and abattoirs, to organic farms and animal welfare agencies, he has an intimate, expert understanding of the farming practices that take place in our name. Evans calls for less radicalisation, greater understanding, and for ethical omnivores to stand up for the welfare of animals and farmers alike. Sure to spark intense debate, On Eating Meat is an urgent read for all vegans, vegetarians and carnivores.Trade ReviewHUGH MACKAY: 'Compelling, illuminating and often confronting, On Eating Meat is a brilliant blend of a gastronome's passion with forensic research into the sources of the meat we eat. PROFESSOR ANDY LOWE, Director of Agrifood and Wine, University of Adelaide: 'Insightful, well-researched and highly readable, Matthew Evans' new book On Eating Meat presents an honest and challenging assessment of the livestock industry and the ethical and environmental issues surrounding our consumption of meat... this book equips the reader with the knowledge to get beyond the entrenched opinions of its topic area, and allows us to decide whether and what type of meat we wish to consume, and with what consequences for the future.'ANTON VIKSTROM, Good Life Permaculture: 'Mathew Evans fearlessly investigates where our food comes from and the hidden impacts of our industrial food system. If you eat meat, read this book.' ALEX ELLIOTT-HOWERY, Cornersmith: 'This is the most important food book I've read in years. Book SynopsisA firsthand account of how public officials and other well-connected individuals have been compromised or blackmailed by their sexual improprieties, Confessions of a D.C. Madame relates the author’s time running the largest gay escort service in Washington, DC, and his interactions with VIPs from government, business, and the media who solicited the escorts he employed. The book details the federal government’s pernicious campaign waged against the author to ensure his silence and how he withstood relentless, fabricated attacks by the government, which included incarceration rooted in trumped up charges and outright lies. This fascinating and shocking facet of government malfeasance reveals the integral role blackmail plays in American politics and the unbelievable lengths the government perpetrates to silence those in the know.Trade Review"It has become an accepted fact that politicians are dirty. They lie, cheat, steal, and are above the law. Prostitutes are part of an underground part of this society, which America turns away from. There isn't much to be done to stop it, as paying for sex existed hand in hand with the power dynamic of governing people and society. Confessions of a D.C. Madam: The Politics of Sex, Lies, and Blackmail is a scary eye-opener of how naive American society is to this world." Wendy Stevens, Portland Book Review

  • Dying to Count: Post-Abortion Care and Global

Rutgers University Press Dying to Count: Post-Abortion Care and Global

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisDuring the early 1990s, global health experts developed a new model of emergency obstetric care: post-abortion care or PAC. In developing countries with restrictive abortion laws and where NGOs relied on US family planning aid, PAC offered an apolitical approach to addressing the consequences of unsafe abortion. In Dying to Count, Siri Suh traces how national and global population politics collide in Senegal as health workers, health officials, and NGO workers strive to demonstrate PAC’s effectiveness in the absence of rigorous statistical evidence that the intervention reduces maternal mortality. Suh argues that pragmatically assembled PAC data convey commitments to maternal mortality reduction goals while obscuring the frequency of unsafe abortion and the inadequate care women with complications are likely to receive if they manage to reach a hospital. At a moment when African women face the highest risk worldwide of death from complications related to pregnancy, birth, or abortion, Suh’s ethnography of PAC in Senegal makes a critical contribution to studies of global health, population and development, African studies, and reproductive justice. Trade Review"Siri Suh's Dying to Count is a powerful exploration of the women caught by reproductive governance and surveillance in Senegal...an excellent choice for scholars of reproductive health, transnational/global sociology, and public policy." * Sociology of Race and Ethnicity *"Dying to Count is a model of excellent academic writing...Suh's writing is clear, persuasive, and urgent: she skillfully blends different forms of empirical evidence and nuanced arguments to push the boundaries of major debates in gender and development policy." * Gender & Development *"[A]n impressive and detailed ethnographic exploration of post abortion care as a form of reproductive governance...Suh's critical and feminist lens infuses the book, evident not just in her incisive and reflection writing but in the methodological care that has gone into the research design and data collection." * Sociology of Health & Illness *"Dying to Count represents an important addition to the literature on reproduction. Even though the primary focus of the book is on abortion care, its analyses go beyond abortion and contribute to contemporary debates on reproductive governance and justice." -- Mounia El Kotni * Medical Anthropology Quarterly *"Siri Suh’s illuminating book Dying to Count offers a rare window into the politics of postabortion care (PAC) in Senegal, a country where induced abortion is illegal. At a time when restrictive abortion laws are on the rise in the United States and parts of Latin America, Suh’s book is a meticulously crafted achievement that has important implications for scholars doing work in the Global North and South." -- Joseph A. Harris * American Journal of Sociology *"In this fascinating account, Siri Suh describes how tools, policies, institutions, and data come together in Senegal to make post-abortion care into 'good care.' PAC suits policy-makers' needs for targets, funders' demands for metrics, and clinicians' interests in misclassifying abortions. With devastating analytical and moral clarity, Suh shows that there’s almost nothing PAC cannot do—except put women’s dignity and interests first." -- Claire Wendland * author of A Heart for the Work: Journeys through an African Medical School *"This is a magnificent book. Feminist scholar Siri Suh has written an exquisitely detailed and meticulously researched account of the introduction and use of post-abortion care in Senegal during the late 20th and early 21st century. By taking a clearheaded and compassionate look at maternal health and abortion politics in Senegal, Suh draws attention to the fact that as long as there are restrictive abortion laws women need PAC, no matter where they are living. What a superb addition to global health scholarship!" -- Susan Bell * author of DES Daughters: Embodied Knowledge and the Transformation of Women’s Health Politics *"Dying to Count is for anyone who wishes to better understand how reproductive governance operates—via medical technology, global development policies, NGO mission statements, and moral regimes. Scholars and graduate students of science and technology, global health, population and development, and African studies will find Suh’s analysis to be a valuable model for future analysis of reproductive governance across a range of social and political contexts." * Social Forces *Table of ContentsIllustrations Foreword by Lenore Manderson Abbreviations Note on Anonymity and Language Introduction: PAC as Reproductive Governance 1 A “Transformative” Intervention 2 A Troublesome Technology: The Multiple Lives of MVA in Senegal 3 “We Wear White Coats, Not Uniforms”: Abortion Surveillance in Hospitals 4 When Abortion Does Not Count: Interpreting PAC Data Conclusion: Evidence, Harm Reduction, and Reproductive Justice Appendix A: Methodology Appendix B: Cases of Admitted and Suspected Induced Abortions Acknowledgments Notes References Index

Book SynopsisHardcore pornographic films combine fantasy and real sex to create a unique genre of entertainment. Pornographic films are also historical documents that give us access to the sexual behavior and eroticism of different historical periods. This book shows how the making of pornographic films is a social process that draws on the fantasies, sexual scripts, and sexual identities of performers, writers, directors, and editors to produce sexually exciting videos and movies. Yet hardcore pornographic films have also created a body of knowledge that constitutes, in this digital age, an enormous archive of sexual fantasies that serve as both a form of sex education and self-help guides. Sex, Society, and the Making of Pornography focuses on sex and what can be learned about it from pornographic representations.Trade Review“With Bigger than Life Jeffrey Escoffier had already proved himself the most informative and lively chronicler of the history of gay pornography. Now, against the background of this history, he turns his attention to the making of gay sexual fantasies to convincingly explain how the unfaked realities of sexual acts work to connect with fantasmatic sexual scripts to sell alluring performances.” -- Linda Williams * author of Hard Core: Power, Pleasure and the "Frenzy of the Visible" *"Jeffrey Escoffier brilliantly lays bare what really drives pornography: less the pumping bodies than the underlying sexual scripts, which draw on historical conditions to shape individual desires. No scholar has tracked this process so comprehensively, from the labor arrangements of production to the evolving sites of consumption. Sex, Society, and the Making of Pornography offers pointed observations on everything from 1970s 'homo-realism' to contemporary gay-for-pay performance, as well as comprehensive theorization that reshapes porn studies." -- Whitney Strub * author of Perversion for Profit: The Politics of Pornography and the Rise of the New Right *"Escoffier returns to the topic of gay pornography that made his previous book Bigger Than Life: The History of Gay Porn Cinema From Beefcake To Hardcore so notable. With a focus primarily on the rise and fall of studio porn and its related scenarios and economics, toward the end, Escoffier touches on other forms of porn; actors' cam-shows, nightclub appearances, strip acts and escorting." * Bay Area Reporter *"Published as a collection in February, Sex, Society, and the Making of Pornography reflects some 25 years’ worth of interviewing on-and behind-camera talent." * BLOOP *"Escoffier covers porn’s relation to the sexual revolution, he movement from softcore to hardcore porn, the emergence of gay porn, identity through porn, porn screenplays, gay for pay, female actors in straight porn, porn stars, trans porn and porn and the technological revolution." * Reviews by Amos Lassen *"Enlightening and even affordable." * Lambda Literary *"While many might think of pornography as only a minor aspect, Escoffier offers a strong argument that hardcore pornography has been integral to the recent historical developments of sex and sexuality.

  • Euthanasia and Palliative Care in the Low

Peeters Publishers Euthanasia and Palliative Care in the Low

Book SynopsisBelgium and the Netherlands - the Low Countries - are the first countries in the world to have legalized euthanasia. Physicians who terminate life at the patient's request no longer have to fear criminal prosecution. However, end-of-life legislation in the Low Countries has provoked diverse responses and sparked vigorous and divisive ethical debate. For some, the new legislation has become a shining example; for others it is a lamentable materialization of a culture of death. A"Euthanasia and Palliative Care in the Low CountriesA" provides an overview and comparison of the legal specifics of the Belgian and Dutch Euthanasia Acts, a discussion of palliative care initiatives and an ethical examination of the new legislation. In addition, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the arguments used in the end-of-life debate and a critical examination of the positions taken by the churches. The book concludes with an overview of how Christian health-care institutions accommodate to this new legal situation.
