    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis fascinating new volume provides a comprehensive yet concise overview of the chemical aspects of some of the major innovations and changes that occurred during the 20th century, relating chemical structures and properties to real-life applications. Developed for a course taught by the author for several years at UVA, the author covers the important and consequential developments in chemistry and explains their everyday, real-life applications. These include such topics as consumer products, fossil fuel use, polymers, agriculture, food production, nutrition, explosives, and drugs. The section Molecular Biology and Its Applications includes examples of the application of biotechnology and genetic engineering. Trade Review"Professor Richard Sundberg, who is well known as an author of both a widely used advanced organic chemistry text and two indole chemistry monographs, has now published The Chemical Century for the educated general public. With minimal chemical jargon and few organic chemical structures, Sundberg has woven a fascinating story of chemistry over the past 150 years. From early chemical dyes and explosives, to the structures of DNA and proteins, and to today’s medicines and pesticides, Sundberg covers an array of ubiquitous chemical topics that are regularly featured in news media and on the Internet. Importantly, his book goes far in dissipating ‘chemophobia’—the irrational fear of chemicals that has plagued the general public for decades. The Chemical Century should be on the reading list of anyone interested in learning about chemicals, both good and evil."—Dr. Gordon W. Gribble, The Dartmouth Professor of Chemistry, Hanover, New Hampshire"Professor Sundberg is well known as an educator and as co-author of the two-volume, multi-edition Advanced Organic Chemistry, a mainstay in chemistry graduate education for 40 years. He now has turned his pedagogical talents to the history of mankind from the 1800s until today through the lens of the contributions of chemistry. Readers need little chemical knowledge in order to inhale a sense of chemical research, product development, and commercialization in the 20thcentury. Sundberg nimbly weaves the themes of power (such as in the form of explosives and fuels), the manufacture of everyday things, food, drug discovery, biotechnology, and molecular biology into a story that we, our parents, and our grandparents have experienced firsthand—mankind’s advances during the past 100 years."—Jeffrey I. Seeman, Department of Chemistry, University of Richmond"This masterful book relates the impact of chemical discovery and invention on the broad scope of twentieth-century history: upheaval in war, government and society; human and ecological health; industry and commerce; the rise and fall of nations and the quality of everyday human life. Chemical structures and equations provide depth for chemists and serve as illustrations for the more casual reader. The book’s organization and the table of contents make it easy to select particular topics of interest. The Chemical Century is a unique and valuable work: both a clearly written history of the science and a history of the century from a chemical point of view. Derived from classroom lectures at the University of Virginia, this book illustrates Dr. Sundberg’s love of teaching and his never-ending search for causation. Discovery leads to invention. Book SynopsisWith a sharp focus on environmental pollution and its impact on life and nature, scientists and engineers have studied the water treatment effect of natural wetlands for many years, resulting in the development of constructed wetlands (CWs) for treating wastewater. This informative new book provides current information and guidance on the construction, performance, operation, and maintenance of subsurface flow constructed wetlands of domestic and municipal wastewater. The focus of the volume is to evaluate the performance of horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands in treating domestic wastewater to establish the limit that can be safely discharged to agricultural drains. Two-step procedures were used for the preparation of this book. Using modeling and statistical analyses of treated water samples showed a significant difference between different media for the treatment of most pollutants. The authors went on to design artificial neural network models (ANNs) using Matlab software to simulate some of the experimental data and to anticipate the parameters of output concentration. The wetland systems have the ability to deal with various pollutants with different concentrations and to decrease the treated water to the standard limits. This volume presents the main role of emergent plants for treatment performance in the constructed wetlands and will be a very important resource for engineers in this field as well as for both undergraduate and graduate students.Table of ContentsIntroduction. • In Search of the Good Society: Love, Hope and Art

Taylor & Francis Ltd In Search of the Good Society: Love, Hope and Art

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCompelling reading, this book both reinforces and elevates the role of art in the exploration and analysis of the concepts of democracy, globalization and capitalism. In the book, the author describes a post-human world, a state we have already entered. But how should we think about it, given we have already been co-opted? Can we articulate the future outside the false discipline that the market often dictates, beyond the clutches of a few social media companies, and maintain our rich diversities while holding on to those things that make life possible and worthwhile: love, hope and art?Running throughout the book is the central theme of uncertainty and divergence. It is uncompromising in asking the question about the need for a new global creation story, which has at its core not the certainties of one defined creation myth but the need to feel comfortable with the uncertainty principle both in physics and the political economy. It is up to artists, scientists and philosophers to articulate this wonder and to help us write a new global creation story based on art (the arts), uncertainty, diversity, risk and wonder – and of course knowledge. This book has the capacity to both clarify and re-shape your thinking.Trade Review'This book is an outstanding reflection on the crucial challenges of our time and a path toward a positive future. How can the good life be delivered? The author argues that decisions made through deliberate public policy can enhance and promote health, social care, education, equality and social mobility, all keys to a good society. Yet we must advance public policy with public reasoning. We must win the argument with reason. The author fears that voters today, especially in the UK and the USA, have shot themselves in the foot, like turkeys voting for Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you only read one book this year, this should be the one.'Oliver F. Williams, Director, Center for Ethics and Religious Values in Business, Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame, USA'This book is TRULY BRILLIANT. I feel as if I have travelled with the author to far-flung places, back in time and close to death. It conjures up pictures of extraordinarily diverse places, yet subtly reminds us how similar, frail and yet strong we are. It weaves together such different themes so seamlessly. The text cleverly connects major world events and issues, the context of all our lives. With amazing clarity, it is a perfect balance of reflection and positivity, leaving me with a sense of connection to the world and hope.'Carol Adams, Professor of Accountancy, University of Durham, UK'In this illuminating book, In Search of the Good Society, Malcolm McIntosh engages in a wide-ranging contemplation of the theory and practice of the good society. With McIntosh’s background and experience, he is ideally suited to craft such a quest. Using optics of love, hope and art, he envisions the good life being delivered within a global society and economy. This thoughtful, well-written and insightful essay will be appealing both to optimists and realists. I strongly recommend this book for academics, practitioners and concerned citizens.'Archie B Carroll, Professor Emeritus, Terry College of Business, University of Georgia, USA'Malcolm McIntosh's latest book is a true gem. It gives all of us pause as we consider the dark realities of the world we face today, then offers hope through glimpses of what creating a good society really means. Read this book. You will be glad you did! It is brilliant. I am blown away and hope the book has great success. The last three chapters in particular are stunning in their scope and impact.'Sandra Waddock, Professor of Management, Galligan School of Management, Boston College, USA'The chapter on health is both refreshing and inspiring. Whilst acknowledging that some diseases are incurable, it takes a very positive approach as to how we can maximise our chances for being around for as long as possible, with some very practical and achievable suggestions. The chapter very clearly highlights the uncertainty over prognosis and, as a medical community, our inability to be accurate in our predictions. It outlines a number of lifestyle steps that as individuals we can all take to improve our chances of defying the odds and being long-term survivors. More than that, it shows the power of positive thinking and of living life to the full.'Mark Beresford, Consultant Oncologist and Clinical Lead for Oncology and Haematology, Royal United Hospital, Bath'Centred on his courageous story of surviving and thriving terminal cancer over six years, Malcolm takes us on an insightful, enlightening, and sometimes painful, experiential journey. It’s compelling reading. Don’t miss it…'Bimal Arora, Chairperson, Centre for Responsible Business, IndiaTable of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgementsIntroduction: The Reflective Observer 1. Book SynopsisSustainable consumption is a controversial concept: politically, socially and intellectually. Consumption drives our economies and defines our lives; making it sustainable is an enormous and essential challenge. The World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 set in place a 10-year programme of effort by national governments to develop strategies for sustainable consumption and production. The problem of changing consumer behaviour and making our lives more sustainable continues to challenge opinion-formers and policy-makers alike. This book provides a coherent synthesis of key contributions to the literature on consumption and sustainability, comprising a substantive collection of selected papers and extracts from books, journals and institutional publications. Presented with a comprehensive introductory overview, the Reader also offers an invaluable 'route map' through the complex intellectual terrain relevant to the pursuit of sustainable consumption.Trade Review'This useful book lays out the case for making consumption sustainable, or at least less unsustainable. Essays by a variety of distinguished authors explore the psychological as well as social and economic factors, and end with propositions about how to understand and manage ourselves.' Sir Crispin Tickell, Chancellor, University of Kent, UK 'Professor Jackson has compiled (and contributed to) an outstanding collection of eclectic papers on the multi-faceted conundrum of consumption. This comprehensive volume frames the problem, makes the case against consumerism, unmakes it again in an intriguing section on 'resisting simplicity' and ends by 'reframing sustainable consumption.' Anyone hoping to understand the role of consumption in placing (un)sustainability among the most intractable problems confronting the modern world should begin with a thorough read of Jackson's new collection.' William E. Rees, Professor, University of British Columbia, Canada 'This is an invaluable guide to the innovative and urgent field of sustainable consumption. The way we live and the life of the planet are intertwined and this book is an excellent resource for those who wish to know.' Ed Mayo, Chief Executive, National Consumer Council, UK 'A comprehensive introduction provides an excellent guide through the complex arena of sustainable consumption.' Magazine of the IEMA 'I highly recommend this book... This reader presents a thoughtful selection of the best literature available in the field and is organized as a practical and essential framework for better understanding a very central topic at the core of many environmental issues.'
