  • Cambridge University Press Governing Sustainability

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe crisis of unsustainability is, above all else, a crisis of governance. The transition to a more sustainable world will inevitably require radical changes in the actions of all governments, and it will call for significant changes to the lifestyles of individuals everywhere. Bringing together some of the world's most highly regarded experts on governance and sustainable development, this book examines these necessary processes and consequences across a range of sectors, regions and other important areas of concern. It reveals that the governance of sustainable development is politically contested, and that it will continue to test existing governance systems to their limits. As an assessment of existing policy practices, it will be of great interest to all those who are preparing themselves - or their organisations - for the sustainability transition.Trade Review'This collection offers some hugely stimulating insights … and in the process, unashamedly puts the emphasis where it now needs to be: we now know (more or less) what we need to do to secure a sustainable world, but how the hell are we going to do it?' Jonathon Porritt CBE, Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission'This smart and erudite collection problematizes 'environmental governance' and 'sustainability'. By identifying the multiple approaches to these key terms, the authors advance our collective efforts at refining the concepts and ultimately achieving sustainability.' Peter M. Haas, University of Massachusetts'Neil Adger and Andrew Jordan have brought together an outstanding set of authors who offer an excellent overview of governance and sustainable development. This is an important book for all scholars interested in our common future.' Elinor Ostrom, Indiana University'Our understandings of citizenship, governance, and government have evolved with the rise of understanding in ecological complexity, the desire for sustainability, and the contradictory but parallel rise of market ideology. All will continue to change with the demise of market fundamentalism, rise of pragmatism, and renewed faith in government. Governing Sustainability deeply explores the past and helps prepare us to both design and adapt with the future.' Richard B. Norgaard, University of California, BerkeleyTable of ContentsPart I. • Cambridge University Press Nature and Empire in Ottoman Egypt An Environmental History Studies in Environment and History

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn one of the first ever environmental histories of the Ottoman Empire, Alan Mikhail examines relations between the empire and its most lucrative province of Egypt. Based on both the local records of various towns and villages in rural Egypt and the imperial orders of the Ottoman state, this book charts how changes in the control of natural resources fundamentally altered the nature of Ottoman imperial sovereignty in Egypt and throughout the empire. In revealing how Egyptian peasants were able to use their knowledge and experience of local environments to force the hand of the imperial state, Nature and Empire in Ottoman Egypt tells a story of the connections of empire stretching from canals in the Egyptian countryside to the palace in Istanbul, from the forests of Anatolia to the shores of the Red Sea, and from a plague flea's bite to the fortunes of one of the most powerful states of the early modern world.Trade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'This book adds an important new dimension to the historiography of Ottoman Egypt. The author makes very intelligent use of Ottoman administrative documents and Muslim court records from a variety of Egyptian locales in order to situate this critical region within the new cutting-edge scholarship on the role of the environment and natural resource management in history.' Jane Hathaway, Ohio State University and author of The Arab Lands under Ottoman Rule, 1516–1800Review of the hardback: 'Alan Mikhail deploys an impressive array of environmental history insights. He asks new questions and comes up with startling answers.' Richard W. Bulliet, Columbia UniversityReview of the hardback: 'Nature and Empire in Ottoman Egypt offers a history of the Ottoman world like no other. The force of environmental processes, the lived detail of peasant life, and the emergent forms of modern governmental power interact in this highly original account of early modern Egypt.' Timothy Mitchell, Columbia UniversityReview of the hardback: 'Through admirable and painstaking research, Mikhail has explored a new and fascinating aspect of Ottoman Egypt, using a timeframe that spans a transitional period, which allowed him to draw comparisons and provide original comments and provocative opinions that will stimulate future debate. This book is highly recommended.' Doris Behrens-Abouseif, Journal of the Economic and Social History of the OrientTable of ContentsIntroduction: an empire by nature; 1. Watering the Earth; 2. • Cambridge University Press Peatland Restoration and Ecosystem Services

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisPeatlands provide globally important ecosystem services through climate and water regulation or biodiversity conservation. While covering only 3% of the earth''s surface, degrading peatlands are responsible for nearly a quarter of carbon emissions from the land use sector. Bringing together world-class experts from science, policy and practice to highlight and debate the importance of peatlands from an ecological, social and economic perspective, this book focuses on how peatland restoration can foster climate change mitigation. Featuring a range of global case studies, opportunities for reclamation and sustainable management are illustrated throughout against the challenges faced by conservation biologists. Written for a global audience of environmental scientists, practitioners and policy makers, as well as graduate students from natural and social sciences, this interdisciplinary book provides vital pointers towards managing peatland conservation in a changing environment.Table of ContentsList of contributors; Acknowledgements; Foreword Julia Marton-Lefèvre; 1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisTropical Forest Insect Pests, first published in 2007, promotes a better theoretical understanding of pest population dynamics, and causes of forest insect outbreaks in the tropics. Covering pests of both natural forests and plantations, it examines the diversity of tropical forest insects; their ecological functions; the concept of pests; and the incidence of pests in natural forests, plantations, and stored timber. General issues on which foresters and forest entomologists hold strong traditional views, such as the severity of pest incidence in plantations vs. natural forests, in plantations of exotics vs. indigenous tree species, and in monocultures vs. mixed plantations are discussed. The final section looks in detail at specific insect pests of the common plantation tree species across the tropics, with recommendations for their control. This is a comprehensive resource suitable for graduate students and researchers in forestry and tropical forest entomology, and for forest plantaTrade ReviewReview of the hardback: 'This is a comprehensive resource suitable for advanced students and researchers in forestry and tropical forest entomology, and for forest plantation managers in the tropics. • Cambridge University Press Empire of Timber Labor Unions and the Pacific Northwest Forests Studies in Environment and History

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe battles to protect ancient forests and spotted owls in the Northwest splashed across the evening news in the 1980s and early 1990s. Empire of Timber re-examines this history to demonstrate that workers used their unions to fight for a healthy workplace environment and sustainable logging practices that would allow themselves and future generations the chance to both work and play in the forests. Examining labor organizations from the Industrial Workers of the World in the 1910s to unions in the 1980s, Empire of Timber shows that conventional narratives of workers opposing environmental protection are far too simplistic and often ignore the long histories of natural resource industry workers attempting to protect their health and their futures from the impact of industrial logging. Today, when workers fear that environmental restrictions threaten their jobs, learning the history of alliances between unions and environmentalists can build those conversations in the present.Trade Review'We know a lot about the US environmental movement. There is also a considerable body of scholarship that explores the tumultuous past of unions and unionizing. Forging the links between these historiographies has been rare. Add Empire of Timber to that clutch of pathbreaking studies.' Char Miller, Pomona College, California'Empire of Timber represents a major contribution to environmental and forest history, and with its thoughtful thematic combination of work, health, and resource sustainability, it sits at the cutting edge of scholarship in these fields.' Book SynopsisJohn Evelyn (1620â1706), intellectual, diarist, gardener and founder member of the Royal Society, is best known for his Diary, the great journal of his life and times, encompassing a momentous period in British history. A lifelong collector of books, like his contemporary Pepys, Evelyn amassed over 4,000 items in his library. This work, originally published in 1664, was the first English-language treatise on forestry. Intended for the gentry, it aimed to encourage tree-planting after the ravages of the Civil War and to ensure a supply of timber for Britain's fast-developing navy. The first work sponsored officially by the Royal Society, it was an offshoot of Evelyn's unpublished manuscript Elysium Britannicum, a compendium of gardens and gardening. This is the 1908 two-volume reprint of the fourth edition, published in the year of Evelyn's death. Volume 2 covers practical aspects of forestry and the use of trees in landscaping.Table of ContentsBook III: 1. Of copp'ces; 2. Of pruning; 3. Of the age, stature, and felling of trees; 4.
