  • Game Changer: The Story of Pictionary and How I

Mascot Books, Inc Game Changer: The Story of Pictionary and How I

Book SynopsisIt all began with one small step. Game Changer is the story of how a twenty-three-year-old waiter from Seattle had the outrageous dream of beating industry giants Milton Bradley and Mattel at their own game. With no experience, Rob Angel used his guts, drive, and intuition to create one of the most beloved board games of all time: Pictionary. Rob did it his way. He produced the first 1,000 games by hand in his tiny one- bedroom apartment, disrupted the market by selling to nontraditional retail outlets, and did countless demonstrations at the bottom of the escalator at Nordstrom" "a store with no game department. Anything to succeed. Getting there wasn''t easy; Rob had to navigate his way through production mishaps, cash flow troubles, and countless copycats trying to scratch their way past Pictionary. Still, within three years, Pictionary became the bestselling board game in North America, and shortly after, the world. When Mattel acquired Pictionary in 2001, a staggering 38,000,000 games had been sold in 60 countries. In Game Changer, Rob shares the remarkable inside story of taking Pictionary from simple idea to iconic global brand by breaking rules and breaking records, never giving up or giving in, and working harder when most would walk away all while having the time of his life. Candid and compelling, Game Changer is as much a captivating memoir as it is a blueprint to personal and professional success.

McFall, co-CEO of BIGGBY COFFEE, helps readers identify the common-sense strategies they need to focus on to turn their start-up ideas into positive-cash flow businesses. Readers will be pleased to find that McFall avoids sophisticated and tedious descriptions of processes, theories, and regulations. In addition to his calls for ""personal due diligence,"" grit, and hard work, he goes into detail about crucial business drivers, speaking from his personal and professional experience and including examples of hits and misses. Filled with anecdotes, ideas, and calls to action, Grind provides the expertise new businesses need to perform well. Row House Publishing The Antiracist Business Book: An Equity Centered

Book SynopsisTHE ANTIRACIST BUSINESS BOOK is the business book for the modern world. Trudi Lebrón has spent the last decade working as a DEI and impact coach for businesses, non-profits, and entrepreneurs. And what she learned over that time was that making a lasting change wasn''t about fixingold systems; it was about building a new one. In this seminal work, Trudi lays out a plan for all businesses, leaders, entrepreneurs, and coaches to remix business, so that equity and impact become synonymous with profit and power.Trudi provides lessons on understanding the long-term impacts of living in a hyper-capitalist, post-colonial world (aka White People Sh*t) and an examination of the way we have viewed wealth (whether as an obsession or an obscenity). She will compel business owners and leaders to rethink how they do business.Trudi shares ways to create an antiracist business in a capitalist system, showing readers: How to make the shift from toxic capitalism to justice-based commerce - Trudi has spent years working with corporate leaders, online entrepreneurs, and mid-level managers on understanding how to build profitable businesses based on ethical transparency, justice-based leadership, and equitable business practices. She explains how justice can be found in a system that places profit above all else, re-imagining our economic systems not just in theory but in practice. How to move from the streets to the suites (-isms in business) - Trudi identifies the new form of leadership, which isn''t from above but is built from the trust, creativity, and community usually found in the streets. As younger generations demand a new world order, the old one is dying and is being replaced with something remarkably more dynamic, equitable, and wealth-generating for all.How to make friends with money - This is for all you activists in the back row. Money is not the devil. In fact, without embracing and creating wealth generation, antiracism will always struggle at the corners of the conversation. In this work, Trudi will help readers heal their business journey, inviting them to redefine and re-envision their relationship to wealth.Unlike any other book on the market,THE ANTIRACIST BUSINESS BOOKtakes an antiracist perspective. It applies it to how we are doing business-at the top, in the middle, and at the bottom, offering tools for advancement in how we work, earn, and lead. The wisdom inside this timely and essential book advocates for a new order of business that creates transparency, opportunity, and disruption. Businesses can no longer be successful while operating as tools of the status quo.

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis This research monograph answers the question how sustainability driven entrepreneurs (ecopreneurs) deliver their sustainability goals through their business practices. The research draws on data from 12 case studies set within the food industry. The analysis takes a firm level and a supply chain level perspective and provides insights to the interconnected nature of sustainability goals within and across firms. It provides theoretical propositions that show one approach of how to conduct business in a way that works for the planet and people in addition to shareholders. This presents an alternative understanding of organisational performance that builds the foundation for many avenues of future research into sustainable management. The research combines the remote areas of supply chain management and entrepreneurship at the intersection of sustainability. This novel approach and the insights from the business practice exploration, offer many avenues for further research beyond entrepreneurship and supply chain management. This book will be of interest to academics in management research and also to people with an academic background that work together with sustainability driven and/ or social entrepreneurs, who could benefit from the insights into how sustainability goals are delivered through business practices and the relevant trade-offs faced by ecopreneurs.

De Gruyter The Role of Business Incubators in the Economic

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisTo study the role of business incubators in the economic growth of India, it is imperative to understand whether or not incubators reduce the mortality of start-ups. Are incubators instrumental in providing an effective platform for accelerating the growth of start-ups? Do the existing incubators meet the expectations of start-ups? Are incubated start-ups able to attract funding from venture capitalists? These are only some of the questions that fall within the scope of this research. In this book, the authors explore the subject in-depth in an attempt to respond to them. For the purpose of this study, primary and secondary research data were used. In the context of American, European and Chinese incubator industries, this data was readily available. However, due to its nascent stage, there was not enough secondary data available in the context of the Indian incubation industry. Therefore, primary research was carried out. Thus, in order to design the research, structured interviews with the founders of start-ups and incubator managers were conducted. The findings of the study reveal that, despite the gaps between the offering of incubators and the expectations of start-ups, there is a positive impact of business incubators on job creation, wealth generation and the creation of intellectual property.

Book SynopsisHow has "ethnic entrepreneurship" emerged and developed since the late eighties in Berlin? In his study, Baris Ülker answers this question by relying on the experiences of immigrants from Turkey. Most academic studies on "ethnic entrepreneurship" have focused either on the "most unitary" structure available in the "natural flow of history" or on the pre-given "cultural" characteristics of immigrants. This book instead sets historical ruptures, conditions of possibility and individual practices in context. It analyzes how human beings have been turned into "ethnic entrepreneurs" and explains the ways of governing the self and others in the neoliberal urban context.

De Gruyter The Mystery of Wealth: Capitalism. Democracy.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe purpose of this book is to demystify the causes of wealth and poverty like never before done. It is the seminal comprehensive presentation of the CDR index. The CDR index is a mathematical model that shows how capitalism (C), democracy (D) and rule of law (R) jointly with natural resources and geography explain almost all economic growth. As it turns out, capitalism, democracy, and rule of law are intangible policy variables that are at the disposal of all countries and explain almost all gross domestic production of tangible products and services. There is also a minor contribution from non-policy variables such as natural resources and geography. These are all that countries require at their disposal and choice in order to enjoy their desired standard of living. The CDR economic growth model is a new paradigm.

The Rockwool Foundation Research Unit Job Creation & Job Types: New Evidence from

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWe extend earlier analyses of the job creation of start-ups vs. established firms by taking into consideration the educational content of the jobs created and destroyed. We define education-specific measures of job creation and job destruction at the firm level, and we use these to construct a measure of surplus job creation defined as jobs created on top of any simultaneous destruction of similar jobs in incumbent firms in the same region and industry. Using Danish employer-employee data from 2002-7, which identify the start-ups and which cover almost the entire private sector, these measures allow us to provide a more nuanced assessment of the role of entrepreneurial firms in the job-creation process than previous studies. Our findings show that while start-ups are responsible for the entire overall net job creation, incumbents account for more than a third of net job creation within high-skilled jobs. Moreover, start-ups only create around half of the surplus jobs, and even less of the high-skilled surplus jobs. Finally, our approach allows us to characterize and identify differences across industries, educational groups and regions.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat are the characteristics of jobs in entrepreneurial firms as compared to jobs in incumbent firms? Even though this question has been addressed by many researchers before us, we provide new evidence to the field since we measure the entrepreneur as the organic new firm. In the literature, the majority of studies have focused on entrepreneurs as measured by small or new firms. By organic new firms, we mean new firms that are not the result of restructurings or organizing existing or additional activities in a formally new firm. Moreover, we distinguish entrepreneurial firms by different types and distinguish between growing and declining industry-region clusters. Our results differ from the findings in the existing literature. Specifically, we find that compared to incumbents, entrepreneurial firms have higher total factor productivity, are more skill intensive, and pay higher wages. The differences are more pronounced in growing clusters. Moreover, the results show important differences between different types of entrepreneurial firms. Specifically, spin-offs are found to enjoy the largest productivity advantage. The wage and skill premiums at the firm level disappear at the job level, as larger incumbents are both more skill intensive and pay higher wages than smaller incumbents.

  • Job Quality by Entrepreneurial Spinoffs

The Rockwool Foundation Research Unit Job Quality by Entrepreneurial Spinoffs

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWe study whether entrepreneurial spinoffs are important drivers of industry dynamics. More precisely, we investigate whether the quality of jobs in spinoff entrepreneurs are higher than for other entrepreneurs. We distinguish spinoff firms by different types and distinguish between growing and declining industry-region clusters. We find that spinoffs on average have higher wages, are more skill intensive, have higher sales per worker and are more productive than non-spinoff entrepreneurial firms. The differences are more pronounced in growing clusters. The results even hold when we control for worker heterogeneity and industry and region clusters characteristics. An important feature of the analysis is that we measure the entrepreneur as the organic new firm. By organic new firm, we mean new firms that are not the result of restructurings or organising existing or additional activities in a formally new firm.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBased on the ''theory formation of entrepreneurship'', as has been developed over the past few decades by political economists, sociologist and social-economic historians on the notion ''entrepreneurship'', this study will focus on how entrepreneurship in the Netherlands, specifically during ''Trade Capitalism'' (1350-1815), took shape and what its contribution has been to the period of ''Total Capitalism'' (as from the late 1980s). Three sub-periods during ''Trade Capitalism'' will be studied. The first sub-period runs from 1350 to 1580 and is considered to be the upbeat to the ''first modern economy'' in the world. In the second sub-period, running from 1580 to approximately 1670 (the so-called Dutch Golden Age), this first modern economy reached its absolute zenith. During the then following third sub-period, from 1670 to 1815, we see forms of economic stagnations and a gradual decline in trade in the Netherlands. Perpendicular to each of these three periods, four dimensions related to the functioning of entrepreneurship will be applied so as to assess the entrepreneur''s standing in practice. These are 1) identifying and making optimal use of ''opportunity conditions'', 2) institutional development in which government played an important role, 3) socio-cultural aspects affecting entrepreneurship, and 4) specific personal characteristics of the entrepreneur. All of these also provide insight into the entrepreneurship in the past and its contribution to the present-day Total Economy.

Book SynopsisThis is a book about the formation, development, and success or failure of new high technology companies, focusing on those that grew under the auspices of entrepreneurs from MIT in Boston at the end of World War Two. Edward Roberts has conducted extensive empirical research on these firms for the past 25 years and has written widely on the subject. He is one of the acknowledged academic experts on entrepreneurship. This book is the culmination of his work and synthesizes his findings.Trade Review`One has only to look at a book such as Edward Roberts' Entrepreneurs in High Technology ... to see how much can be achieved.' Book SynopsisFew would deny the crucial role that entrepreneurs play in our increasingly global economy--but exactly what is this vital, yet loosely defined business force we call the entrepreneurial spirit? This landmark study is the first to examine analytically the nature of the opportunities that entrepreneurs pursue, the problems they face, the traits they require, and the social and economic contributions they make. Until recently, entrepreneurs have been largely ignored in modern economic theory. But at the dawn of a networked age, marked by the advent of e-business and the home office, there''s no question that entrepreneurs have recaptured the popular imagination. Studies now show that most men and women dream of starting their own businesses rather than rising through the corporate ranks. Yet in spite of increased attention by many of today''s leading business schools, entrepreneurship has remained largely a mystery, an apparantly intuitive sense of values possessed by certain individualTrade ReviewTruly fascinating ... Book SynopsisAre entrepreneurs essentially the same everywhere? Are the processes of entrepreneurship similar? Or are they shaped by their environments? If so, how? We know a lot about national differences in management practices, corporate governance, and even innovation systems, but we know surprisingly little about national differences in entrepreneurship. Comparative Entrepreneurship compares processes of entrepreneurship in the UK and Japan, countries associated with liberal market economies and coordinated market economies respectively. Focusing on high tech manufacturing it identifies basic similarities and key differences. Similarities are found in approaches to opportunity and business creation, which are strikingly different from recent policy emphases in the UK and Japan, inspired by Silicon Valley (hence the entrepreneurs live in ''the shadow of Silicon Valley'').
