Book SynopsisWritten for use as a text and reference for those interested in how new materials may be used to capture, store, and use solar energy for alternative energy resources in everyday life, Solar Fuels: Materials, Physics, and Applications discusses the fundamentals of new materials and the physical processes involved in their mechanisms and design. This book offers clear examples of current state-of-the-art organic and inorganic solar cell materials and devices used in the field, and includes experiments testing solar capability along with standardized examples. Last, but not least, it also gives a clear outline of the challenges that need to be addressed moving forward.Trade Review'Research on organic solar cells for photovoltaic (PV) applications has been under investigation for more than 20 years, and it is appropriate to have a new book on this topic. The significant progress in developing organic solar PV is reviewed and presented, along with measurement methods that are used in characterizing organic solar cells. While this book may be used as a textbook, it is written for all individuals who want to know more information about organic solar PV. The chapters in this work cover history, materials for solar PV, measurement methods, solar cell architecture, interface topics, new methodologies, and information pertaining to the future of organic PV. Additionally, many good references appear at the end of each chapter, and excellent color illustrations and figures are included throughout the book. While there has been great advancement in developing solar PV, the present efficiencies of about 10 percent are too small to be competitive in most markets. Organic chemists, physical chemists, physicists, and engineers are attempting to advance the science and design of organic solar cells for PV applications. This book is likely aimed toward these individuals and others who are interested in this particular topic.--L. E. Erickson, Kansas State UniversitySumming Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above; faculty, professionals, and general readers.'– L. E. Erickson, Kansas State University, for CHOICE, February 2018 Vol. 55 No. 6‘"Solar Fuels"… does offer sufficient depth on most of the principal methodologies and analytical methods of characterization to bring the reader close to research-level expertise on organic photovoltaic devices (OPV), which is the main topic. … This volume offers a very useful starting point into this burgeoning field.’– Paul G. • Nuclear Engineering Fundamentals

Taylor & Francis Inc Nuclear Engineering Fundamentals

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisNUCLEAR ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS is the most modern, up-to-date, and reader friendly nuclear engineering textbook on the market today. It provides a thoroughly modern alternative to classical nuclear engineering textbooks that have not been updated over the last 20 years. Printed in full color, it conveys a sense of awe and wonder to anyone interested in the field of nuclear energy. It discusses nuclear reactor design, nuclear fuel cycles, reactor thermal-hydraulics, reactor operation, reactor safety, radiation detection and protection, and the interaction of radiation with matter. It presents an in-depth introduction to the science of nuclear power, nuclear energy production, the nuclear chain reaction, nuclear cross sections, radioactivity, and radiation transport. All major types of reactors are introduced and discussed, and the role of internet tools in their analysis and design is explored. Reactor safety and reactor containment systems are explored as well.To convey theTrade Review"The author presents a fresh approach to the fundamental science and engineering related to nuclear power generation. Difficult concepts are explained in a simple way that will make it easier for students to grasp. The author has gone to great lengths to make the content interesting and uses numerous graphical illustrations to help explain the theories. The content is comprehensive and covers topics that would generally only be found in a collection of textbooks."— John Robberts, Design Point Consulting Engineers (Pty) Ltd, South Africa"This book covers a lot of the material used in most sophomore and junior year undergraduate nuclear engineering courses. There are a large number of review questions and homework problems at the end of each chapter that will aid the student in learning the material. The chapters tend to stand alone so that the instructor can select the chapters of interest as needed for their course. Hence, one could easily use this same textbook for a three or four semester sequence of undergraduate courses. In addition, it would be the perfect book for an introductory graduate level course for those students who do not have an undergraduate nuclear engineering degree. The textbook is written in an easy to understand manner which also makes it conducive to self-study by nuclear engineers or other persons in industry who are interested in the topic. Moreover, this textbook can serve as a single reference for use in taking the Professional Engineer’s Exam in Nuclear Engineering."— Mark Pierson, Virginia Tech, USATable of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgmentsAuthorChapter 1 Understanding the Atom and the NucleusChapter 2 Neutrons and Other Important Nuclear ParticlesChapter 3 Fundamental Nuclear Processes: Scattering, Fission, and AbsorptionChapter 4 Nuclear Cross Sections and Reaction ProbabilitiesChapter 5 Cross Section Libraries and Sources of Nuclear DataChapter 6 Radioactive Materials and Radioactive DecayChapter 7 Nuclear Fission and the Nuclear Chain ReactionChapter 8 Neutron Moderators and Reactor CoolantsChapter 9 Elements, Isotopes, and Their PropertiesChapter 10 Uranium Enrichment, Nuclear Fuels, and Fuel CyclesChapter 11 Fuel Pins, Fuel Rods, Fuel Assemblies, and Reactor CoresChapter 12 Types of Reactors and Their Design ParametersChapter 13 Pressurized Water ReactorsChapter 14 Boiling Water ReactorsChapter 15 Fast Reactors, Gas Reactors, and Military ReactorsChapter 16 Containment Buildings and the Nuclear Steam Supply SystemChapter 17 The Interaction of Radiation with MatterChapter 18 Shielding Systems and Radiation ShieldsChapter 19 Protecting Humans from the Harmful Effects of RadiationAppendix A: Important Nuclear and Physical ConstantsAppendix B: Unit Systems and Conversion FactorsAppendix C: Nuclear Cross Sections and Reaction RatesAppendix D: Physical Properties of Important Nuclear MaterialsAppendix E: Atomic Mass Tables, Half-Lives, and Natural AbundancesAppendix F: Delayed Neutron Emitters and Their Nuclear PropertiesAppendix G: Attenuation Coefficients for Radiation ShieldsIndex

  • Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasma Physics: Ideal MHD Theory

Morgan & Claypool Publishers Magnetically Confined Fusion Plasma Physics: Ideal MHD Theory

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book describes the ideal magnetohydrodynamic theory for magnetically conned fusion plasmas. Advanced topics are presented in attempting to fill the gap between the up-to-date research developments and plasma physics textbooks. Nevertheless, they are self contained and trackable with the mathematical treatments detailed and underlying physics explained. Both analytical theories and numerical schemes are given. Besides the current research developments in this field, the future prospects are also discussed.Nowadays, it is believed that, if the ideal MHD theory predicts major instabilities, none of the magnetic confinements of fusion plasmas can survive. The author has also written the book Advanced Tokamak Stability Theory. In view of its importance, the MHD theory is further systematically elaborated in this book. The conventional ideal MHD framework is reviewed together with the newly developed multi-parallel-fluid MHD theory. The MHD equilibrium theory and code are described with the non-letter-'X' separatrix feature pointed out. The continuum modes, quasi-modes, phase mixing, and Alfven resonance heating are analysed. The analytical theories for MHD stability in tokamak configurations are systematically presented, such as the interchange, peeling, ballooning, toroidal Alfven modes, and kink type of modes. The global stability computations are also addressed, including resistive wall modes, error-field amplifications, and Alfven modes, etc.Table of Contents Preface Acknowledgements Author biography 1.
