  • Energiewende: Politikwissenschaftliche

    Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden Energiewende: Politikwissenschaftliche

    1 in stock

(Sebastian Strunz, in: Politische Vierteljahresschrift PVS, Jg. 61, 2020) “... Januar 2020) “...

  • The Shanghai Cooperation Organization: New

NIAS Press The Shanghai Cooperation Organization: New

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIn its first decade of existence, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has developed into a key regional security group in Asia. Alarmists believe that the SCO is making itself into a NATO of the East, thus posing a long-term threat to the West, while others point to a "looseness" in the SCO that prevents it from becoming a cohesive group like NATO. Indeed, Sino-Russian rivalry is said to be a major obstacle for the SCO's long-term sustainability. Even so, the key importance of several SCO member states in the fields of economic development and energy production means that political developments within the SCO can soon no longer be ignored by the global market. Despite these factors - and even though its member states could be said to represent no less than "half of humanity" - the organization has long been disregarded by political leaders in the West and is seldom reported in Western media or analysed in academic works. As such, this ground-breaking volume with contributors from across the region and beyond will be a key reference for many specialists and academics working on Asian affairs. Aimed at political scientists and area specialists with an interest in Asian affairs, this volume is also intended to be of use in courses on contemporary geopolitics, security and foreign policy in Central Asia, Russia and China as well as offering unique perspectives to students in both political science and area studies. Certain chapters may also be helpful for scholars and students within the field of economics and energy studies. This volume is the result of a series of seminars and workshops on the SCO conducted within the framework of the Stockholm International Program for Central Asian Studies (SIPCAS). The initiator and leader of this book project was Professor Birgit Schlyter, Head of SIPCAS and presently Director of the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul.Table of ContentsContents: Preface 1. Claeys & Casteels Publishers BV Energy Scenarios and Policy Volume II: Handbook

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book was originally published by Claeys and Casteels, now formally part of Edward Elgar Publishing. Sub-Saharan Africa is on the move. Since 2000, the region has seen rapid economic growth (with real GDP growth rates outperforming other major regional economic blocs), improving social conditions (with falling infant mortality rates and rising life expectancies) and progressive political liberalization (if in the 1990s only about 5% of African nations were considered to be democracies, today only a handful of the 55 African states do not have a multiparty constitutional system). Notwithstanding the fact that Africa’s energy sector is vital to its socio-economic development, this remains one of the most poorly understood parts of the global energy system. This book seeks to contribute to the understanding of such a topical issue, by providing an analysis of the current trends and future prospects of sub-Saharan energy markets. Issues covered include patterns of energy production, demand and trade; energy investments; energy infrastructure; energy access; energy and development; regional energy cooperation; the role of China in Africa’s energy.

  • Guidelines for the Determination of Standardized

IAEA Guidelines for the Determination of Standardized

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThe operational useful lifetime of semiconductor electronic devices working in harsh radiation environments is limited by the structural defects induced by the exposure to ionizing radiation. This has immediate consequences for their use in high radiation environments, for example in nuclear facilities, satellites, radiotherapy, medical diagnostics, security and other industries. This publication establishes a standardized procedure to quantify the radiation hardness of semiconductor diode materials in a way that is independent of the irradiation parameters and biasing conditions of the device. The established parameter reflects the additional free charge carrier trapping cross section induced by the damaging radiation, normalized to the predicted concentration of generated vacancies by the same radiation. The effectiveness of the approach is validated through different types of ion beam irradiations, characterizations and materials used. The work leads towards approaches to predict the radiation induced effects on device performance for more complex electronic structures.

  • IAEA Approaches for Modelling of Radioecological Data

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis publication was produced as part of the Working Group 4 of the IAEA Modelling and Data for Radiological Impact Assessments (MODARIA) programme, which focused on the analysis of radioecological data in IAEA Technical Reports Series publications to identify key radionuclides and associated parameter values for human and wildlife exposure assessment. The intent is to reduce uncertainties and to develop new approaches to strengthen the evaluation of the radiological impact to the public, as well as to flora and fauna, arising from radionuclides in the environment. The publication comprises two main sections. The first one considers prioritization approaches to identify the radionuclides and pathways that potentially contribute most to internal and external exposure to organisms in wildlife groups for different sources and exposure situations. The focus of the second section is the improvement of transfer parameter values for animal product data, namely cow and goat milk. Milk was selected as it often has a high priority in radiological environmental impact assessment. Examples of approaches that can be used to identify potentially important data gaps, illustrated using case studies are also presented. This publication is intended to provide Member States with technical information and data that can be used by their national authorities to develop and improve their models and approaches for radiological environmental impact assessment for facilities and activities.

  • IAEA Radiation Safety in the Use of Nuclear Gauges:

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere are several hundred thousand nuclear gauges incorporating a radioactive source or a radiation generator in use all over the world. They have been used in a wide range of industries to improve the quality of products, optimize processes, and save energy and materials. The economic benefits have been amply demonstrated, and there is clear evidence that nuclear gauge technology can be used safely and will continue to play an important role. Although generic guidance for source handling is available, there have been no targeted recommendations for radiation safety in the use of nuclear gauges. To fill this gap the current publication provides practical guidance for implementing the safety requirements specified in IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSR Part 3, Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards, related to the use of nuclear gauges

  • Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive

IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe transport of radioactive material is an essential activity worldwide. Both safety and security during transport are matters of national and international importance. This publication is the latest edition of the IAEA Safety Requirements for the safe transport of radioactive material. It is supported by six IAEA Safety Guides which provide explanation and guidance for the SSR-6 requirements to facilitate harmonized implementation. The SSR-6 Regulations apply to the transport of radioactive material by all modes on land, water, or in the air, including transport that is incidental to the use of the radioactive material.Transport comprises all operations and conditions associated with, and involved in, the movement of radioactive material; these include the design, manufacture, maintenance and repair of packaging, and the preparation, consigning, loading, carriage including in-transit storage, unloading and receipt at the final destination of loads of radioactive material and packages. These requirements form an integral part of regulations worldwide, therefore SSR-6 and its associated guidance documents are a requisite source of guidance information for governments, regulators, and all individuals involved in the aforementioned activities of transport of radioactive material. These requirements are adopted into the UN Model Regulations which are subsequently adopted by the IMDG Code by the International Maritime Organisation for shipment by sea and by the International Civil Aviation Organization Technical Instructions for shipment by air. Both the IMDG Code and the ICAO Technical Instructions are globally implemented and mandatory. Land transport is the responsibility of the national government of each Member State, and the SSR-6 requirements are adopted for national transport safety regulations for shipments on land.
