Book SynopsisBone is a dynamic tissue that undergoes continual adaptation during vertebrate life to preserve skeletal size, shape, and structural integrity and to regulate mineral homeostasis. Bone mass is skilfully regulated through osteoclasts and osteoblasts. Bone mass is reduced through decreased osteoblastic bone formation and increased osteoclastic bone resorption. This decrease induces osteoporosis. Bone loss is also caused in various pathophysiologic states including inflammatory condition, obesity, diabetes, and cancer cell bone metastasis. In addition, malnutrition or undernutrition is often observed with increasing ages and is strongly implicated in the pathogenesis and consequences of bone fracture in the osteoporotic elderly. Nutritional and functional food factors may play a pivotal role in maintaining bone health, and this will be expected as a new biomedical treatment for osteoporosis.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Type 1 Diabetes: Causes, Treatment & Potential

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisType 1 diabetes is a chronic auto-immune disease. Type 1 diabetes was previously called insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) or juvenile-onset diabetes. Type 1 diabetes develops when the body''s immune system destroys pancreatic beta cells, the only cells in the body that make the hormone insulin that regulates blood glucose. To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump. Topics discussed in this compilation include genetic and epigenetic studies of type 1 diabetes; blood pressure and diabetes during pregnancy; comparison of diseases-specific quality of life, metabolic control and cardiorespiratory fitness in physically active and inactive youths with type 1 diabetes; stem cells for the treatment of patients with type 1 diabetes; and the causes and potential complications of type 1 diabetes.

  • Natriuretic Peptides: Physiology, Molecular

Nova Science Publishers Inc Natriuretic Peptides: Physiology, Molecular

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides the current knowledge and recent developments to navigate cellular, molecular, and clinical aspects of natriuretic peptides and their receptors in health and disease. State-of-the-art technology in cell and molecular biology has been applied to delineate the expression, function, and regulation of natriuretic peptides and their receptors both in vitro and in vivo model systems. Transgenic and gene-targeted mouse models have clearly demonstrated that the absence of functional natriuretic peptides and/or their cognate receptors cannot only raise blood pressure but also cause severe hypertensive heart, similar to what is seen in untreated human hypertensive patients. The genetically engineered mouse models have been useful to reveal not only the actual functions of the genes for natriuretic peptides and their receptors, but more critically their modifying interactions with other genes. This book presents a comprehensive look at the past developments, current status, and future prospects of the natriuretic peptides and their receptor systems in bedside diagnosis, treatments, and therapeutic advancements. The book comprises of fourteen chapters from eminent scientists in their area of research expertise, and presents a wide range of reviews spanning the research works done on the natriuretic peptides and their receptors. Each chapter provides a comprehensive summary covering the aspects of physiology, molecular biology, and clinical implication of the accomplished experimental findings and future perspectives of research to be performed in this vital and important cardiovascular field. It is expected that this book will provide readers a focused overview of the status and perspectives of the natriuretic peptides and their receptors from the past accomplishments to exciting future investigations.

  • Adrenaline: Production, Role in Disease & Stress,

Nova Science Publishers Inc Adrenaline: Production, Role in Disease & Stress,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe book examines the noradrenaline-emotional psyches (brain-blood barrier) somatic-adrenaline axis. It conceptually updates research advances, diagnostic techniques and therapeutic methods. The authors enhance their discussions with clear illustrations and explicative texts written for researchers, professionals, educators and students alike, which favour its selection as an essential overview of recent medical and scientific advances, allowing the reader to have the satisfaction of finding first-rate accounts of important work. Comparative studies between immediately obtained adrenal vein samples (AVS) and 15 minutes thereafter show that the stress reactions induced by catheter manipulation had an effect on serum cortisol and aldosterone values. A transient increase in cortisol release from both adrenal glands occurs in the majority of the patients who undergo AVS. This stress reaction can influence the assessment of both the selectivity of the catheterisation during the sequential AVS technique and the lateralisation of aldosteronoma bearing gland. The separation of noradrenaline (NA) at brain and adrenaline at blood functions as a homeostatic lame axis by the blood-brain barrier blocking adrenaline feedback in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HTPA). This leads to postulate an evolution adaptation for the brain dominance over body, which allows a psychoanalytic treatment to function to signal turn-off and return to circadian homeostasis. Decreased glucose could stress the HTPA axis and leads to decreasing metabolites and releasing Mg2+ for integration of the brain-tissue network. Mg2+ changes adenylyl cyclase (AC) from a Ca2+-AC complex to an Mg2+-AC form with responsiveness to NA for short-term memory. The cAMP generated has been postulated for consolidation of long-term memory.

  • The Wise Scalpel: Tips & Traps in liver,

TFM Publishing Ltd The Wise Scalpel: Tips & Traps in liver,

Book SynopsisSurgery remains a challenge for young learners. Perhaps the most difficult of all surgeries are those done on the liver, biliary tree and pancreas. These organs are difficult to expose, difficult to operate and the patients are often difficult to recover. There are significant consequences for any missteps on what is a narrow pathway to a successful outcome. The skills needed to master surgery on these organs are hard to acquire. The volume of information presented to students is enormous and complex to parse. HPB textbooks contain a large amount of information from various authors but are often poorly coordinated. Surgical manuals contain significant anatomic details and descriptions but have difficulty transferring key concepts. Experienced surgeons are often oblivious to their skills and communicate poorly to their students regarding the things they do or understand that make them wise. This book tries to capture this wisdom. The topics in this book are most applicable to hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeons but really extend to all general surgeons. Anyone who operates in the abdomen must have a basic understanding of these dominant organs; general surgery trainees and staff are an additional focus of this book. The skills needed for a modern surgeon to succeed are much broader than the scalpel tip. Section I, HPB Surgical Craft, imparts important lessons on the laws of human interactions and cognitive aspects of surgery. Sections on the anatomy and operations on the liver, pancreas and bile ducts are presented. The expanded gallbladder section and pancreatitis chapters are of particular importance to general surgery residents. This book has been written in a readable and entertaining style, with many fun historical and contemporary quotes dotted throughout. The Wise Scalpel is an attempt to impart knowledge and understanding to students and practicing surgeons at all levels. The book focuses on tips, traps and underlying truths about the diseases of these organs and their surgical treatment. While this book will not supplant the struggle needed to move from novice to expert surgeon, hopefully it will quicken the process and help avoid some of the dangers and frustrations along the way.

  • Cultural Differences and the Practice of Sexual

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Cultural Differences and the Practice of Sexual

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is twofold: to promote an awareness of cultural differences in connection with sexual medicine among health care providers, and to demonstrate how such differences are relevant to the care and treatment of patients with sexual issues. Individual sexuality represents the cumulative effects of biological, psychological, and cultural influences. Yet much of the study of sexuality—including issues ranging from sexual identity to sexual response—has been conducted through a Western lens. Although a substantial body of work in anthropology has taken up the study of human sexuality from a cross-cultural perspective, two points are notable. First, this work seldom crosses the desks of medical and psychological health practitioners, and second, the relevance of specific cultural differences is rarely apparent to the typical sexual health practitioner. To address this situation, this book adopts a global perspective, focusing on how cultural practices and values can impact health care, treatment, and outcomes. In this regard, it covers three broad domains: Sexual Identity and Orientation; Sexual Response and Dysfunction; and Sexual Diversity. Each chapter consists of two parts: a general description of the relevant issues, and a discussion of how these issues can be relevant to clinical practice. The book offers a valuable, practical tool for specialists in sexual medicine and sexual psychology, for sexual healthcare givers, and for sexological researchers who want to better serve their patients by developing an awareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences, and by providing a framework for dealing with issues of sexuality and sexual health that takes cultural values into consideration, while adhering to best practices in patient care.Trade Review“The book has something to teach everyone, from the novice just beginning to understand the cross disciplinary nature of sexual health care to the seasoned sexual health professional looking to enhance their understanding of specific cultures or sub-cultures. As an educational resource tool, the book is worth being read and kept as a resource … . having read it, I look forward to treating my patients more effectively and to the many lively discussions that will be engendered by this work.” (Elisabeth Gordon, Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, May 6, 2021)Table of ContentsPart I: Introduction.- Culture and Practice: Identifying the Issues.- Role of Medical Anthropology in Understanding Cultural Differences in Sexuality.- Part 2: Sexual Issues, Identity, and Challenges.- Socio-cultural perspectives, challenges, and approaches to sexual health in the Indian subcontinent.- Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexuality from a Cross-Cultural Perspective.- Transcultural Homo- and Trans-Phobia.- Impact of Chinese Traditional Culture on Sexuality.- Sexual Fluidity Behind Culture.- Part 3: Dealing with Sexual Issues.- Middle East Cultural Challenges and the Treatment of Sexual Problems in Men.- Central Asian Challenges in Sexual Issues.- Western, Asian, and Middle Eastern societies’ cultural attitudes and barriers impacting the management of sexual health care.- Latin American and Latina/Latino Issues in Sexual Health.- Cultural Issues Impacting the Acceptance of Psychosexual Therapy.- Normal or normative? • This Is Your Brain on Birth Control

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisAn eye-opening book that reveals crucial information every woman taking hormonal birth control should know This groundbreaking book sheds light on how hormonal birth control affects women--and the world around them--in ways we are just now beginning to understand. By allowing women to control their fertility, the birth control pill has revolutionized women's lives. Women are going to college, graduating, and entering the workforce in greater numbers than ever before, and there's good reason to believe that the birth control pill has a lot to do with this. But there's a lot more to the pill than meets the eye.Although women go on the pill for a small handful of targeted effects (pregnancy prevention and clearer skin, yay!), sex hormones can't work that way. Sex hormones impact the activities of billions of cells in the body at once, many of which are in the brain. There, they play a role in influencing attraction, sexual motivation, stress, hunger, eating patterns, emotion regulation, friendships, aggression, mood, learning, and more. This means that being on the birth control pill makes women a different version of themselves than when they are off of it. And this is a big deal. For instance, women on the pill have a dampened cortisol spike in response to stress. While this might sound great (no stress!), it can have negative implications for learning, memory, and mood. Additionally, because the pill influences who women are attracted to, being on the pill may inadvertently influence who women choose as partners, which can have important implications for their relationships once they go off it. Sometimes these changes are for the better . . . but other times, they're for the worse. By changing what women's brains do, the pill also has the ability to have cascading effects on everything and everyone that a woman encounters. This means that the reach of the pill extends far beyond women's own bodies, having a major impact on society and the world. This paradigm-shattering book provides an even-handed, science-based understanding of who women are, both on and off the pill. It will change the way that women think about their hormones and how they view themselves. It also serves as a rallying cry for women to demand more information from science about how their bodies and brains work and to advocate for better research. This book will help women make more informed decisions about their health, whether they're on the pill or off of it.
