  • The Mr X Stitch Guide to Cross Stitch

Search Press Ltd The Mr X Stitch Guide to Cross Stitch

    20 in stock

Book SynopsisIf you think you know what cross stitch is, look again! Jamie Chalmers, aka Mr X Stitch, shows you how to cross stitch using simple step-by-step instructions and also takes you to the frontiers of cross stitch design. The book is aimed at stitchers of all abilities, from absolute beginners looking to learn a new craft to embroiderers and cross stitchers who want to do something different in cross stitching. For many, cross stitch conjures up images of cute kittens and country cottages, but this book shows people that there’s a different side to cross stitching – that it’s an art in its own right, and will encourage them to be a little braver with their art. Jamie’s writing style is fun, entertaining and highly inspirational. The book aims to appeal to men as well as women, encouraging one and all to take up the ancient craft. It teaches the basics of cross stitching, including information on materials, tools, techniques and colour blending, but also puts Jamie’s own individual spin on it, with urban flavours and the introduction of different materials such as glow-in-the-dark threads and stitching on metal. As well as providing exciting designs to stitch, there is guidance on how to create cross stitch designs of your own, for example by using photographs and other images for reference. Jamie also showcases the work of other contemporary cross stitchers who are pushing the boundaries of their craft, and introduces more than 20 stunning cutting-edge projects to make, showing that beauty, innovation and 'craftivism' are alive and kicking in this inspirational book.Trade ReviewThink you know everything about cross stitch, or perhaps you have always wanted to have a go but think it might not be for you? Here is a book that cheerfully debunks lots of stitching myths and shows you that there is more to cross stitch than you might think. I do love a book that challenges stereotypes and shakes up the rules that inevitably accumulate around any hobby. Mr X Stitch does not look like most people’s idea of what a cross stitcher should look like which is refreshing in itself, and you can expect no charts of teddies, pets or gardens. Instead you get a humorous and common sense look at getting kitted out, learning the basics and stitching on more than just even weave fabrics. Topics often omitted or glossed over briefly get some fairly detailed coverage too, such as washing, pressing, framing, sorting out the back of the work and a whole page of useful tips. There are some charts to get you started including words, a geometric squirrel, rainbow flower, creative use of glow in the dark threads and even a Game of Thrones inspired piece. The book also looks at how other people have used cross stitch in creative ways including stitching on metal, abstracts, decorating biker gear, 3D work and even large scale work on fences. If you fancy having a go at your own charts there is a section on doing this with a computer, including an excellent beginner introduction to using software featuring a simple design. This is put through the paces in various sizes and a limited palette showing how to work with different fabric counts, getting the best look for your work and even how to do a pop art version. I wish I had seen something like that when I got my first cross stitch design program as it takes a lot of the trial and error out of getting to grips with using one. The book concludes with looking at plastic canvas, aluminium foil and other things with holes in that can be stitched, as well as a few pages of handy alphabets to aid your designing. There is even more in here than everything I have described so whatever your level if you want a good contemporary look at cross stitch this is the book for you. -- Rachel A Hyde * Myshelf.com *Issue 13 Needlework is having a real resurgence at the minute. Famed for being one of instagram's biggest supporters of hand stitching Jamie Chalmers, AKA Mr X Stitch has brough out his very own Guide to Cross Stitch, which is packed with original patterns and hints and tips to inspire and guide you every step of the way. We're especially smitten with the squirrel on the cover, which would make a perfect project for autumn evenings. * Sew now *A fun, entertaining, inspiring and instructive book by Jamie Chalmers, alias Mr. X Stitch, connoisseur of contemporary embroidery. Even if you think you know what cross-stitch is, is this book worth the effort. To the hand of simple step-by-step step instructions the writer's limits the possibilities with cross stitches and encourages them at their own borders to shift. On the order come: the basis of cross stitches, information about materials, tools, techniques, colors mix and finish. Also design it yourself and it use of the computer thereby, come amply offer. The book also contains work from a number of contemporary artists working with work cross stitch. This review has been translated from Dutch * Textiel Plus *Cross stitch has shaken off its lame image in recent years, largely thanks to pioneers like Jamie Chalmers, better known as Mr X Stitch. In this book he captures the energy of the contemporary cross stitch revival, with examples of modern designs and 20 projects, backed up with instructions on the basics of cross stitching – from materials and tools to techniques, using computer programs and colour blending. Once you’ve mastered the basics, he shows how artists have refined the basic cross stitch to make works that are both striking (cross-stitched fences by Les Deuz’Bro) and original (stitched metal works by Severiją Inčirauskaitę- Kriaunevičienę). * Embroidery *This is an awesome book, a useful reference tool, full of fascinating hints, tips and tutorials. I also found it an absorbing read and found myself sitting with a coffee, poring over the pages. The many unusual and interesting charts and suggestions for using materials such as GitD thread had me reaching for my purse and heading out to my local craft store. I would heartily recommend the purchase of this book , either as a special treat for yourself or a thoughtful gift for a friend. -- Jennie Meadows * Customer Review *I'm and experienced cross stitcher and thoroughly enjoyed this book. First time I've seen a book like this written by a man but the author shows a real enthusiasm for his subject. I liked the continuity from what essential equipment to have through to projects of varying complexity. It is written with wit and humour and holds the attention. The interviews within were very thought provoking. Somethings like the glow in the dark thread I'd not even heard of. This also made me think outside the box from just making pretty pictures to frame or hanging in the hoop to using on clothing or metallic objects. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone, especially if looking for something a bit out of the ordinary. -- Kim Bond * Customer Review *This is a fantastic book! I have been a longtime Mr X Stitch fan, and have attended a couple of his workshops, so getting my grubby mitts on a copy of this was a no brainer and I was not dissappointed. In his fun and chatty style, Jamie talks through the basics, as well as introducing more complex designs, and includes interviews/features on some really interesting, cutting edge stitch designers. The in depth analysis of how stitch/thread count affects the finished item (I adore that pineapple), and his advice about colour choices make this a must have book in my opinion. Cute, but never cutesy designs and great content. More please, Mr X Stitch! -- Natasha Field * Customer Review *I've been a cross stitcher since my teens and I didn't think any books about cross stitch would be more than basic how-to's and patterns.. I was happily surprised when I received The Mr X Stitch Guide to Cross Stitch, it's full of useful information from the basic how-to to tips and tricks, framing, pattern design and colour theory plus ideas for thinking out out of the box, taking it further and artist interviews AND patterns! This is the best guide out there about cross stitch and even as an experienced cross stitcher, this book is going to stay on my bookshelf and become a well thumbed guide. -- Becca Birtles * Customer Review *This is quite a modern style of cross stitch to what I'm used to but very inspiring to try something out of my comfort zone. I've met the author at an event before which is why I wanted this book and there are lots of his designs to try. It's a good book to get if you want to try something a bit different to traditional cross stitch designs. Now, which one to try first... -- Maria Ticehurst * Customer Review *Very good book. Excellent designs very innovative. Look especially Whitby abbey at sunset. But all designs are great. I'm a new person to cross stitch. Will definitely try out designs and show fellow cross stitchers the book. -- Linda Susan Bryan * Customer Review *This book is such a refreshing change to anything that on a book shelf in today's market. Well laid out in easy to follow sections ( for anyone new to cross stitch or a old hand at such a lovely hobby) I love the squirrel the flower and Whitby abbey with its 99 colours so refreshing to the usual flowers and teddys . If you want to refresh your interest in cross stitch this is the book for you. Will be a keeper on my book shelves. -- Jane Perry * Customer Review *I have never done cross stitch before so thought that I would like to review this book and contrary to my expectations, this book is quite exciting- an adjective I hadn’t previously associated with cross stitch. No roses and hearts here, more interesting contemporary projects offered. They include skylines, bargello with a difference, 3D objects, pop art and typography. The latter is what attracted me. It has very clear instructions for a novice like me, enabling me to create a suitably salutary notice for my home. In addition to clear stitching instructions, it has interesting sections on framing, computer design, the use of colour, embroidery on unusual mediums including plastic and metal, amongst others. A great book which has succeeded in capturing my imagination and will be used to create many an item in the future. -- Janet V (contributor) * Customer review *Table of ContentsForeword by Julie Jackson 6 Introduction 8 Tools & materials 10 Making a start 18 How to cross stitch 20 Framing your work 28 The back 32 Colour 36 A moment of context 46 Outlier: Zoe Gilbertson 54 Glow in the Dark 56 Stitching and travelling 63 Outlier: Kate Blandford 72 More Than a Hobby 74 Peace of mind 76 Embroidery as therapy 79 Craftivism 83 Embroidery as an art form 86 Outlier: Severija Inčirauskaitė-Kriauneviĉienė 90 Pattern Design 92 Computer design 94 Fabric count 99 Colour 100 Epic pineapple 102 Outlier: Lord Libidan 116 Thinking Outside the Hoop 118 If it’s got holes in it... 120 Stitching on plastic 122 Stitching on metal 127 We’re all adults 131 Outlier: Les Deuz'Bro 132 Final thoughts 134 Alphabet fonts 136 Acknowledgements 140 Index 141 Projects Back in Black 32 Fleur de Couleur 40 From Ampersand to Bargello 42 Something Meaningful 47 Sqrl! 50 Empire State 58 Winter is Coming 64 Home Sweet Home Network 68 VodkAtomic 70 I Got Yer Mindfulness Right Here 76 I am an Addict 80 #StitchforSyria 83 Mona 87 Introducing the Pineapple! 95 Portrait of a Pineapple 104 Pop Art Pineapple 108 Whitby Abbey at Sunset 112 Bling 120 Silver Devil 124 C-Tron 125 Yellow Blade 126 Look! 127 What The?! 128

Each of the projects contains step-by-step photography and clear instructions so that even beginners will find these projects a doddle. Trade ReviewFeb 17 I am a great fan of the Love to Sew series, with previous titles including Quilted Flowers, Mug Rugs and Teddy Bears. They are well priced and even if your bookshelf is starting to groan under the weight of craft books then the handy size will be welcomed! This latest title, Sewing Room Accessories, has been written by Debbie Shore, a name that may be familiar to readers through her YouTube channel and previous books. Her new book contains fifteen projects, all made in the practical style Debbie is known for. It starts with pincushions, and then goes on to patterns for a sewing case, sewing machine covers, a tool roll - everything you could think of that you need to make sewing easier. My favourite thing is the Ironing Stand which is based on foldable TV tables found in homeware shops. It looks fairly easy to make, and and would be very handy to have around the house when I sew. The book opens with a short introduction of techniques, but the clear step-by-step photos for each project makes it suitable for all abilities. Many of the projects have details such as pockets and zips to create clever storage ideas. The patterns are written in inches and centimetres, so will keep both quilters and dressmakers happy. If one of your new year's resolutions was to be organised and sew, then you will find lots of inspiration in this book. * Popular Patchwork *There is a lot of information in the book useful to those that are new to sewing. There are several projects many of which I will be making myself, my first project will be the sewing machine cover which I have been wanting to make for a long time. The pin cushion project looks easy and so pretty! All the projects can be made from fabric that I already have and many would make lovely gifts. The instructions are clear and easy to follow. * Joanne Catermole *Dec 2016 The newest title in the Love to Sew series from TV presenter Debbie is a wonderful collection of practical yet pretty items for the sewing enthusiast. As always Debbie provides a comprehensive guide to the fabrics and equipment required together with detailed step-by-step instructions. There are fifteen delightful projects to choose from including machine covers, caddies and totes for sewing equipment, ironing accessories and a fabulous funky pumpkin pincushion! Outstanding value-for-money, this is a must-have book for sewers of all abilities. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *Anybody who sews is going to require places to keep materials and items that help with various tasks. Here is a book of projects for making more than just pincushions to keep your sewing area tidy and enable you to transport your kit as well. There are fifteen projects in here, some of which can be made out of leftovers from other projects. Cotton fabric is used throughout, making this a book that will have a lot of appeal to quilters. Apart from the basic sewing kit you won’t need much else to make these projects, but there is a page showing some additional supplies such as a bamboo creaser, tacking glue pen, fabric clips etc. These items are all optional. This is a book aimed at those who already sew so is not for beginners, although there are instructions at the front for doing appliqué and creating and using bias strips. Make cases, rolls and caddies for storing tools, bags for carrying to classes, a sewing machine cover and useful pressing mitt. Each project has staged instructions with both captions and photographs, as well as a list of what materials and tools you need and a larger photo of the finished item. As this is not for beginners the staged photographs are not numerous but do illustrate the trickier parts. There are also often more than one view of the item showing it open as well as closed for example which is useful. * myshelf.com *Lovely book with easy to follow instructions and some great projects to try. * Lesley Roche *This is a good book it has got great ideas on how to do simple sewing for begginers. It also gives you step to step instructionsand pictures to show you what you should do next. * Mehnaz Hussain *Anybody who sews is going to require places to keep materials and items that help with various tasks. Book SynopsisEmbroidery is back! This book by Cristin Morgan, founder of the popular hand embroidery company Marigold + Mars, contains a stunning collection of contemporary embroidery motifs with bold colour palettes for you to stitch away at for hours on end. The 50 motifs include abstract and geometric patterns, botanical motifs, hand-lettered designs and much more, and will inspire you to get stitching in fresh and imaginative ways. Beginners will learn to master the 10 basic stitches and skills needed to create the motifs inside, all clearly explained in an attractive, approachable way; then, whether you're new to embroidery or the more experienced stitcher, your hand stitching skills can flourish by stitching the motifs onto 20 beautiful and practical projects inside, all featuring easy-to follow step-by-step instructions, lovely photography and helpful templates. Hoop Art will help you bring embroidery out of the hoop to add a touch of stylish handmade flair everywhere.Trade ReviewIssue May/June Social media is awash with images of embroidery framed in hoops; and this book does begin with several projects that do just that, but there is so much more to this stylish how-to book, which those who are keen to learn embroidery will love. Morgan has designed 50 modern motifs (from abstract and geometric patterns to botanical motifs and hand-lettered designs) that can be completed using only ten basic stitches, and has included a set of handy iron-on patterns that will have you stitching in no time. The stylish hoop art embroideries feel fresh and there is an entire section dedicated to embroidering jewellery, patches, homewares and clothing. Beginners will love the ease with which they can embroider a stylish necklace or tote bag, and more experienced stitch enthusiasts can tackle the embroidered denim jacket and patches, or the hoop that features on the cover. This is embroidery for our times, which, whilst aimed at a younger reader, will still appeal to anyone interested in stitching fashionable projects. * Embroidery *Issue 54 Embroidery has been brought into the 21st century. No longer the outdated skill for samplers and fussy patterns here Cristin Morgan has worked traditional stitches into beautiful designs perfect for modern interiors. Combining contemporary motifs that include geometric designs and botanical imagery worked in bright threads, once you've mastered the 10 basic stitches you'll have the knowledge to make 50 illustrated designs. Discover how to update and embellish a cushion cover, napkins or even a denim jacket, or simple salvage a hoop from a charity and create some contemporary wall art. * Reloved *If you think that freestyle embroidery is all about fussy rules and old-fashioned florals think again! This versatile way of making colorful marks on fabric can be as individual and modern as the stitcher, and this book shows you how to express yourself in stitches. This is an ideal book for a beginner as not only does it tell you what you need and show you enough stitches to get you started it also contains plenty of simple projects and even some embroidery transfers. I love the way the author points out that a beginner does not need to own everything on the list and says in just a few words how little you need to start. The projects start with several fun but very basic pieces that can be hung up in their hoops, and continues through garments, accessories, soft furnishings and even jewelry. The stitches are all shown at the back in a beginner-friendly way together with instructions on starting and finishing off plus how to transfer with and without the iron-on method. There is a section containing the templates, a list of projects with the DMC threads used and a couple of useful alphabets to trace if you are monogramming. Each project has plenty of captioned photographs as well as a large photo of the finished piece, size and a list of materials. If I could choose I would have opted for a darker, slightly larger typeface and most of the projects also require a sewing machine plus some basic skills associated with it. Some pieces can be made without, and none of the items are difficult to make up. I think my favorite is the zippered makeup purse decorated with lipsticks worked in a mixture of fabric paint and embroidery. Stitch a botanical fern, cactus napkins, winking pillow, watermelon sunglasses case, pictures in hoops of a rainbow, bees, wildflowers and many other things. I was impressed with the pom-pom instructions that show a totally different method to the one I have always used that can be done with a maker or just some card scraps. If you want to learn freestyle embroidery without a lot of unnecessary fuss and prefer contemporary designs you will love this very beginner-friendly book. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Delve into the world of modern embroidery with Hoop Art by Cristin Morgan of Marigold + Mars. It features 20 new projects to stitch and share. * Love Embroidery *This is an amazing book. It's one that you will use time and again. The only problem you will have is which project to start with first. -- Sue Dougill * Crochet Addict *Issue March/April Hoop art (quirky embroidered designs framed in a hoop) has stormed the internet, inspiring a whole new generation to try hand embroidery. Cristin Morgan leads the pack and this book offers 20 bright, contemporary projects for hoop pictures, as well as hand-embroidered homewares, jewellery and accessories, all with wide appeal for the contemporary crafter. As you'd expect, she's included a stitch directory, templates and paper patterns for more than 50 motifs for abstract and geometric patterns, botanical motifs, hand-lettered designs and much more. Book SynopsisThe Right-Handed Embroiderer's Companion will help you to learn and master over 170 embroidery stitches including their variations.Trade ReviewNov 10 Following the success of The Left Handed Embroiderer's Companion, Yvette Stanton has produced an edition for right-handers. It is a comprehensive dictionary of counted and non-counted stitches with clear, step-by-step instructions and diagrams. There are stitches you have heard of and maybe some that you haven't, all waiting for you to try your hand at. In keeping with the previous edition, each stitch does contain a snippet of advice at the e4nd of each set of diagrams to help left-handers which is useful should you be teaching a friend or relative. The Right Handed Embroiderer's Companion is an absolute gem and a must for anyone with a love of stitching. * NEW STITCHES *Dec 10/Jan 11 There's no shortage of stitch dictionaries, but if you want to master new stitches and also explore variations of the basic stitches, this book is ideal. The step-by-step diagrams are very clear and easy to follow, and the beautiful worked samples will encourage you to distort and manipulate the stitches and use them creatively and experimentally in your own embroidery. There are instructions for more than 170 different stitches (including surface stitches, needlepoint stitches and counted thread stitches), with some unusual ones, such as Chinese knot, pagoda chevron stitch and Ceylon stitch. Following on from the success of her previously published Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion (Yvette Stanton is a left-handed embroiderer), this book aims to redress the balance for the right-handers who were apparently feeling left out – and developing a condition called left-handed envy (I was one of them)! * Stitch *Oct 10 The Right-Handed Embroiderer's Companion by Yvette Stanton is the sequel to the left handed version. I am right handed but have a copy of the left hand edition which I have previously reviewed here. These books are exceptionally clear in their directions and stitches are shown worked in all sorts of different ways and in sample to really give inspiration for their use. I am finding this book invaluable in my City and Guilds stitch samples. I have already got a few stitch dictionaries in my library, including the classics, but this is my first choice now as it is so bright and light and well indexed. I would highly recommend this for other students and teachers. Both the right and left handed embroiderer's companions are superb. * Jennyflowerblue.blogspot.com *Nov 10 Following the success of The Left Handed Embroiderer's Companion, Yvette Stanton has produced an edition for right-handers. There are stunning step-by-step projects so that the reader can put into practise his or her newly-acquired skills.Trade ReviewRarely do I find any book which includes Silk Painting, but Alison Holt uses silk painting as a background for her exquisite machine embroidery! This book is a delight for the eyes and could tempt anyone to try this gorgeous art. Equipment is covered concisely and simply, including silk paints, clear outliner and habotai 8. Followed by sections on taking source photographs, how to capture movement, cropping, combining photographs, sense of scale and which areas to paint or stitch. The section of colour is really informative. The paragraph on understanding colour is probably something we're all aware of but a nudge to the mind increases our execution when painting. I love the 'Painting Without Resist' example, which is fully explained in eight photographs and includes lots of tips. This is followed by 'Lacework Trees' which is so beautiful. However, this is just one example of many; the seascapes are wonderful, and although machine embroidered, would give lots of tips and inspiration to painters. The wonders of this book are too numerous to mention and defy description. Perfectly written and illustrated, with gardens, woodland and seascapes. As I love trees and seascapes, this is a book I would love to own. -- Margaret Dunning * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters *This is a must-have instructional inspirational book for anyone interested in free-motion embroidery. Whether you fancy illustrating blooming gardens, tranquil woodlands or romantic seascapes, this book covers everything you need to recreate beautiful scenery using just two simple stitches. It even includes a showcase of Alison Holt's most exquisite machine embroideries. * Sew Magazine *Whatever type of sewing machine you have you can use it to make beautiful pictures. Just thread up your needle and put some fabric into a hoop and off you go. Well, there is a bit more to it than that which is where this book comes in… If you have the four books by this author on free-motion machine embroidery covering landscapes, seascapes, flowers and woodlands you won’t need this book as you already have it. If not, this new compendium volume contains all four in a revised format. I always love a craft with infinite possibilities but a minimum outlay of funds and which has scope for plenty of recycling and using up oddments, and this is one of them. A simple swing needle machine capable of straight lines and zigzag stitch is the main item, backed up with a supply of threads, plain cloth, paints, embroidery hoop and inspiration. The first part of the book tells you what you need to buy and how to prepare the cloth, use photographs, plan you work, choose threads and background colours and stitch. The rest of the book contains chapters on the themes contained in the earlier books so you can learn how to stitch flowers and foliage, create bosky woods, show the sea in all its moods and produce various landscape types. These pictures are beautiful, depicting very British scenes in the main (or at least northern temperate) and there are numerous exercises to try and several larger projects to work through. The projects all have plenty of staged photographs and this book is aimed at those who are new to this craft, while containing much material of use to those wanting to perfect their skills. Throughout are many of the author’s many pictures with captions explaining various points and lots of tips for better work. An excellent guide to free-motion machine embroidery that teaches most of what you need to know. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *This exciting title showcases textile artist Alison Holt's exquisite machine embroideries, whilst teaching the reader to 'paint' their surroundings using two simple stitches. There are stunning step-by-step projects so that the reader can put into practise their newly-acquire skills. * Craft Business *With two simple stitches, a straight stitch and a zig zag, the author Alison Holt demonstrates her talents beautifully. This book is just amazing and very pleasing to the eye. As a creative person, but not a good one I might add, I envy her talent. The projects in this book can not only be sewn, but also painted, so depending on your own preference, you can have a go at creating and even designing something with a stunning effect. You can also add organza, beads and ribbon to give definition to your chosen piece. The landscapes and seascapes are full of life, the colours vibrant and the subject is beautiful. The 10 projects are accompanied with instructions, techniques and ideas how to create the perfect picture. Of course for most of us this will take some practice, but I love this book, and even if I can achieve just one beautiful flower or a frothy wave then I would be happy. -- Tracy Shephard * Amazon *Issue March/April Alison Holt has been working with creative machine embroidery since the 1970s, 'painting' with thread in her unique style. Her forte is capturing natural landscapes in stitch - from coast to countryside - in realistic detail. Using two simple stitches (straight, zig-zag), Holt explains how to stitch portraits of your surroundings using free-motion embroidery, drawing on other techniques such as silk painting, colour mixing and working with photographs. She breaks the process down into clear stages, illustrated with helpful photographs and examples. An excellent investment for those interested in mastering pictorial machine embroidery. * Embroidery *Alison Holt is a graduate of Goldsmiths in London, where she studied fine art, textiles, and embroidery. She chose freehand machine embroidery as her medium and “started to explore her love of gardens and the countryside”. Alison has perfected the reproduction of nature to the point that her embroideries seem like photographs or paintings, until you look closer and realise the added layer of texture and dimension that the stitches provide. The technique she has developed to such success over the decades for her commissions, courses, lectures, workshops, and books also incorporates silk painting. “More textured areas, such as rough seas and windblown grasses, lend themselves to stitch, whereas smooth areas, such as distant sea and sky, are better represented by silk painting.” But you don’t have to be good at sketching or painting to give machine embroidered art a go. “Machine embroidery has a life of its own and some wonderful effects can be achieved without particular drawing skills.” The book shows you how to transfer a design to fabric, as well as how to use silk paints if you want to approach your work from that angle. In Machine Embroidered Art, Alison takes readers through each of the steps required to stitch a scene of natural beauty. She starts with a rundown of the materials and equipment you’ll need, most importantly a sewing machine – any machine will do, although one with the ability to do zigzag stitches is recommended. Threads, supplies for silk painting and a list of “other equipment” are given in detail, setting you up for early success. Alison works from photographs and always has a camera handy to shoot inspiring scenes. She then uses these and any sketches she may have done to create a design. She takes readers through the art basics of composition, balance, contrast, movement and more in the planning chapter, before moving on to light. Machine Embroidered Art is comprehensive in showing how Alison creates her works of textile art, and how you can do the same. Her skill and mastery of a sewing machine are evident. But it’s the pages and pages of incredibly lifelike landscapes and natural scenes that make it an inspiring read. Book Synopsis30 easy-to-make, stylish decorations all made from felt. The book includes templates, a comprehensive techniques section, guide to embroidery stitches and beautiful hand-drawn illustrations to accompany every project. The fabulous projects include mug hugs, hanging decorations, seasonal decorations, pillows, ornaments, wall-organisers, brooches, children’s toys and much more.Trade ReviewSeptember 2016 This book, the second from Yorkshire based designer Corinne Lapierre, is packed full of 30 craft patterns sewn using felt. It is easy to think of felt being used to make decorations, but this although the book does have patterns for lots of hangers and brooches, it also contains projects for the home, such as a wall hanging organiser, a mug cosy and a cushion. I was attracted to the wide variety of designsl, and the Scandinavian influence stops the book from looking too 'cutesy'. Sometimes felt books can feel like they are aimed at children, but the choice of designs and colours prevents this, and many of the projects feel very grown up. However, it would also be an ideal present for a child, as the patterns are well written and easy to follow, plus felt is a good introduction to using a needle and thread. The beginning of the book has clear photographs with the embroidery stitches and it is this addition which really enhances the designs. There is something very satisfying about makng items from felt. With no raw edges to worry about it is easy to get lost in playing with colour, cutting and stitching, and this book will provide you with enough inspiration to keep you sewing all through the year. * Popular Patchwork *Wool felt is the medium for the quirky, cute projects in designer Lapierre’s debut collection. The book opens with several brief tutorials on stitching and embroidering felt, including information about transferring embroidery patterns from templates and a detailed guide to the basic embroidery stitches used in the projects. This is followed by three seasonally inspired groups of accessories and embellishments, as well as a final “catch-all” chapter featuring a number of nature-and-animal-themed projects. Each project features a list of tools and supplies required (including the amount of felt needed in each color) as well as step-by-step instructions for completing the project with line drawings or photographs of key points. Projects span the small and simple, such as the carefully folded rose brooch, to intricate and complex, such as the owl pillow. Everything is hand-sewn and hand-embroidered, so a sewing machine isn’t required. Some basic sewing knowledge is assumed—there’s no information about cutting pattern pieces or constructing stuffed toys—but wool felt is a forgiving material and beginners should be able to work their way through the projects. VERDICT Sewists looking for “slow-sewing” projects or hand-stitchers desiring fun projects to embellish will be drawn to Lapierre’s adorable designs. * Library Journal USA *Fabulous Felt by Corinne Lopierre is a lovely book that gives you inspiration and projects to cover all seasons! There are 10 pages of techniques and stitches so this book is good for anyone new to working with felt. There are a number of projects for Summer, Spring, Autumn and Winter and these include both Easter and Christmas decorations and even Halloween. All the templates needed for the projects are in the back of the book and only a few require photocopying at more than 100% so most can be traced directly from the book. The instructions are clear and there are some lovely photos to help guide you! Overall I'm really pleased with this book! * Gemma Cornish *With 30 projects that are very appealing, it's really nice when it has all the information we need to get started. It gives extra motivation, when everything you need is at your fingers from start to finish. It comes with a step by step guide, amazing and lovely photos, good attention to details and all the templates needed are also provided. Absolutely love it and will definitely recomend it to friends. * Ana Afonso *Still working my way through this fabulous book. I'm a totally beginner to felting and have found this book excellent for newbies! The instructions are clear yet concise to follow and the patterns included are fabulous! I've picked out my first project and slowly working my way through- can't wait for it to be finished so I can pick another! * Helen Louise *This beautifully photographed book will appeal to both kids and adults. It's full of gorgeous contemporary scandi/folk style felt projects (30 to be exact) that are suitable for beginners and more advanced crafters. Each project contains details of materials and tools required plus step by instructions that are accompanied by clear photographs or illustrations. The templates at the back of the book are easy to trace and duplicate plus they are mainly true to size with the exception of a few that need to be enlarged 200%. My girls (9,9,10) are all totally smitten with the book and love how quick many of the makes are. They have started to create the most delightful gifts for friends, teachers and themselves and all the time they are slowly learning new stitching techniques that they can apply elsewhere. #ReviewItFriday * Blue Bear Wood *This book is colourful and very well set out with makes for both novices and experienced crafters. It ranges from small brooches and decorations to larger cushions and wall hangings. The step by step instructions, patterns and photography are very clear and it is easy for children to follow too. Thirty lovely items to keep you entertained crafting throughout the year. I am now looking forward to the next book by Corinne Lapierre. * Lynn Harris *Fabulous Felt by Corinne Lapierre is a delightful book that will suit beginners and experienced crafters alike. It would make a wonderful gift for beginners to encourage them since the instructions, lists of materials and descriptions of how to make the projects are clear and concise. Patterns are included and there is a lovely range of projects to choose from. More experience crafters could adapt the projects and make them more intricate as desired as a springboard for personal creativity. Instructions include the basic skills needed to embark on the projects from scratch and together with the colour photos make the book very accessible. The projects are so inspiring and some would be suitable for family craft sessions on a wet holiday. The finished projects would be lovely as handmade personal presents if you could bear to part with them or could be given as cutout kits for crafty recipient to make up for themselves. All in all it is a delightful book that would be inspiring to purchase or receive as a present. Thanks to Corinne for the hardworking and inspiration included in it. I already have a project picked out but have also found myself just picking up the book and reading it since it is so charming to browse through too. * Dianne Barnett *I received this book as a gift. I'm not the best crafter but my daughter is very much into creating things, so I was hoping it would give me easy to sew projects we would be able to do together. I find the book very clear structured. The projects are very charming, shown with very good photography and small enough for me as a beginner to try out. I was concerned not to manage to follow the instructions but the first few pages help understand terminology and give clear guidance applique and various stitches required. The templates are also very useful. I'm very happy with the book and am looking forward to trying our first project - the butterfly and flower hanging. * Nicole Selley *Fabulous Felt is a fantastic tutorial book with beautiful full-colour photography throughout. Each page is full of information and written in an simple, easy to understand format. There are thirty patterns included but these can be easily adapted to your own ideas and imagination. She patiently explains how to do each stitch in the project in the first few pages, using excellent photos to show how they are done. I like the fact that it is sectioned into themes, e.g. Summer Garden, Spring and Summer, etc. Every project is easy to find with the contents page at the front. There is an abundance of templates at the back and only a few of them need to be enlarged - always a bonus for me! I particularly like the chicken projects and have the perfect felt ready to do this. Each project has a small section on the side, detailing what templates, tools and material is needed. I really enjoyed looking through this and will definitely be using this book for years to come. 10/10. * Kaiserin Maggs *Fantastic book, very clearly written with excellent photographs. The part showing how to do some of the stitches is great for beginners and those of us who have forgotten how to do some! There are projects for everyone, children would be able to do some of them, or help someone older to do them. there is something for everyone and all seasons in this great book * Donna Hall *This book is set out well with clear photos showing the different techniques and equipment used to create the projects, exactly what I look for when attempting something new. The templates are clearly labelled and are printed with a thick enough line to accurately trace around. The instructions are comprehensive, easy to understand and along with the photos show exactly how each project should be completed. As felt comes in such wonderful colours, it would be easy to stray from the suggested colours to come up with personalised projects. Experimenting with the template sizes would help get much more out of this book, I'm thinking of enlarging the Woodland Mobile to make bunting for my campervan and shrinking the Lavender Sardines and adding a magnet to each one to make a fishing game! * Sarah Dennis *Lovely book well written. The projects are clearly explained and easy to make with fabulous photographs to help. All the templates are at the back of the book and easy to use. All the stitches are also clearly explained making the projects a delight to make. Highly recommended. * Jen English *June 2016 We love Corinne Lapierre's style and felt kits she produces and so we're excited to learn that she hasa a second fabulous new book coming out. You'll be glad to hear we weren't disappointed. Corinnehas designed 30 brilliant new scandi-style felt creations that are suitable for both the complete beginner as well as more experienced crafters, Split into four chapters: Summer Garden, Spring & Easter, Autumn & Winter and Home and Lifestyle, there's plenty to choose from yourself, your home and love ones. * Love to Make *Comment For all the projects Lapierre recommends felting material made from a blend of wool/viscose. Apart from supplying yourself with good quality felt, you do not need to equip yourself with much more than a basic sewing kit will provide. Some projects require the use of fusible webbing, plain tissue paper and toy stuffing and it would be enhancing to purchase some special threads, plus beads, buttons etc to make results extra pleasing. The book is suitable for crafters working at all levels. Techniques are shown in close up photography and there are templates at the back of the book. With the exception of just one of two designs the designs geared for children do not include small parts. Conclusion :How lovely that author Corinne Lapierre grew up with a creative Mum who inspired her! I see a lot of craft books but I was really taken aback by the stunning, yet gloriously simplistic layout of this one. I will be very quick to recommend Lapierre and her work in the future, plus the book itself. The felt designs are pretty fabulous so the book lives up to its bold title. This book has been received very well with 100% 5 star reviews on Amazon * Debra Hall -Notcompulsory.blogspot.co.uk *Find 30 little contemporary projects suitable for complete beginners. I think the front cover just about says it all for this book. Colourful, cute, desirable and fun projects. The book is split into chapters: Summer Garden; Spring & Easter; Autumn & Winter and Home & Lifestyle. The techniques section includes the basic techniques needed and the stitches used. Even children could easily master this, under supervision. There isn’t anything to dislike. It’s full of easy yet stylish projects using bought felt, well photographed and foolproof. There are templates too, some need to be enlarged. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials & equipment 8 Techniques 10 Embroidery stitches 14 SUMMER GARDEN 20 Beach Hut Bunting 22 Rose Brooches 26 Flower Brooches 30 Lavender Sardines 32 Racoon & Fox 34 Spring & EASTER 38 Hen Egg Cosies 40 Bird Hanging 42 Easter Decorations 44 Spring Hanging 48 Butterfly & Flower Hanging 50 Decorative Rabbits 52 AUTUMN & WINTER 56 Christmas Lavender Bag 58 Woodland Mobile 60 Halloween Decorations 64 Christmas Pixie 68 Scandi Houses 70 Mug Cosy 72 Heart Hanging 74 Christmas Clog & Mitten 76 Scandi Horse 78 HOME & LIFESTYLE 80 Bag Charm 82 Russian Doll 84 Sleepy Fox Brooch 88 Scandi-Style Pillow 90 Owl Pillow 94 Sleepy Fox Pillow 98 Toy Bunny 102 Wall Hanging Organiser 106 Hedgehog Pillow 110 Children’s Wall Hanging 114 Templates 116

Book SynopsisOpus Anglicanum, 'English work', was one of the high arts of the Middle Ages, treasured and traded by princes and bishops across Europe. This practical guide explains how just two seemingly simple stitches - split stitch and underside couching - can give extraordinarily complex and sophisticated results that exploit the qualities of silk and gold thread. It introduces new techniques through fourteen projects that progress in difficulty. The book advises on shading, adding detail and authentic use of colour; gives in-depth instruction on stitching faces, hair and hands, as well as wings, animals and landscaping and includes detailed reproductions of original pieces, as well as some with a contemporary twist. The book concentrates on the heyday of Opus Anglicanum, from the twelfth century to the fourteenth, when mastery of this art was at its height.Trade ReviewTanya Bentham covers everything in detail – from materials and tools, to embroidering with silk thread (drawing upon the original techniques used by Medieval stitchers). The result is a comprehensive guide to creating your own Medieval stitched masterpiece. * Textile Art Magazine - Embroidery *This book is a 'Must-Have' for medieval-inspired embroiderers. -- Anne Webber, Book Threads reviewer * Book Threads, SEW Region magazine *

  • The Art of Embroidered Flowers

Search Press Ltd The Art of Embroidered Flowers

Book SynopsisExplore nature through a combination of textiles and embroidery in this new, modernised edition of Gilda Baron’s inspirational, innovative, step-by-step work. Using painted and dyed backgrounds, and hand and machine embroidery, this guide presents a wonderful variety of three dimensional landscape and flower embroideries. A number of techniques are employed when applying colour to the fabric including batik, salt discharge and brushing dye into a wet surface. Beautiful pictures are then stitched and built up over the background in easy stages. The feeling of perspective is enhanced by the clever use of scale and colour, and all the techniques are explained clearly and demonstrated in a series of stunning projects. This original book is packed with practical advice and information. Anyone interested in pattern, texture and colour will discover a wealth of inspiration when they work through the projects. These highly individual designs will encourage beginners and more experienced embroiderers to create their own embroidered flower designs.Trade ReviewThe content goes far beyond the title. Baron’s book, first published in Great Britain in 2004, features flowers in embroidery, but also in painting, resist dyeing, collage, and other techniques. What she reveals is how to create elegant pictures that just happen to include thread. Her directions do occasionally meander, but at her work’s center are three designs—Summer Meadow, Buttercup Field, and Flowers by the Fence—with step-by-step, color-photograph instructions for every part of the process, from dyeing the background to selecting a frame. She mixes techniques in with her designs, looking at machine embroidery, sponging and masking, and a variety of resists (bubble wrap, for one). It’s a small tome, but one filled with big ideas and wall-to-wall examples of Baron’s art, whether the process of hand dyeing or finished fields of blooms. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *September 2017 If you're ready to take embroidery to the next level, pick up this book, which asks you to use it as a creative springboard for your own artwork. It provides you with all the techniques and knowledge you'll need, but what you produce will be all yours. * Sew *Search Press Classics is a series of their books which have stood the test of time and gone the whole nine yards in providing inspiration and instruction. Originally published in 2004 this book shows what can be done with a very basic sewing machine, scraps of cloth, a few simple stitches and some fabric paint. I have loved this book since it first came out, as it shows how you can do a lot with a little and have fun in the process. Recycle even tiny pieces of cloth and anything else you have to hand into some truly beautiful pictures. If you already do some type of sewing you will have nearly everything you need, as apart from the basics you only require fabric paint, plain fabric (I mostly use calico) and various threads. There are a few pages about using photographs or sketches for inspiration, and how to do the background painting. You can also space dye your own threads and learn a few simple hand embroidery stitches. The rest of the book contains projects and ideas to take the basic idea further and make greetings cards, decorative paper mounts and expand into panoramic scenes. This is not a book of flower portraits but glorious landscapes showing fields of poppies and buttercups, meadows, gardens and other colorful scenes. Learn how to use a sewing machine’s most basic stitch and adorn the foreground with a mixture of hand embroidery and flowers made from tiny scraps of fabric. You can also embroider on paper or card, and to inspire you further there are examples of the author’s other finished works. Simple and fun to do it shows you how you don’t need to buy the craft shop in order to make something beautiful and is a great way of using up leftovers from larger projects * Myshelf.com *This is a re-issue of the late Gilda Baron’s popular book, in the new Classics series. Using painted or dyed backgrounds with machine and hand embroidery and applique, and by following Gilda’s meticulous instructions, colourful interpretations of landscapes and gardens can be created. Three step-by-step projects are included with many suggestions for taking the techniques further, and a gallery of Gilda’s completed works provide further inspiration. This gloriously colourful book is a must-have for any embroiderer’s bookshelf. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Materials & equipment 8 design 14 TECHNIQUES 20 Surface embroidery 28 Summer Meadow 30 MACHINE EmBROIDERY 36 Buttercup field 40 Flowers by the fence 50 Embroidered cards 62 Taking things further 66 paper mounts 74 Panoramic scenes 76 Conclusion 78 Index 80

Includes complete flower samplers and a lovely selection of projects showing the embroidered flowers used in a variety of combinations and styles. This is a beautiful book combining the very popular first two books from Diana Lampe, Embroidered Garden Flowers and More Embroidered Garden Flowers, and includes the new "Kardinal Rose Garden".Trade ReviewNov 07 If you enjoy freestyle embroidery you will know that floral and garden-inspired pieces are a great favorite. Here is a book that combines two older titles (plus some new material) and contains patterns for four seasons of a garden, plus a special rose garden not featured in the earlier books. …And garlands too, samplers, a cottage garden and initials as well as ideas for gifts to make embroidered with these lovely floral images. I particularly liked the way that each flower was shown in a line drawing, together with instructions on working, threads used and the stitches needed. There are instructions too for the stitches, shown in right and left handed versions and although this is not ostensibly a book for the beginner embroiderer, it shows how few stitches are needed to accomplish so much. Beginners can learn the stitches and attempt some of the single flowers, while more experienced embroiderers can make up the lovely patterns or combine the flowers for their own pieces (what I have done). The more you look at this book, the more there seems to be in it. * Myshelf.com *Table of ContentsThe four seasons of Diana's garden embroideries in one book for the first time Extra projects to go with each season A comprehensive flower glossary covering every flower shown in the garden embroideries Stitch glossary, which includes instructions for left-handed stitchers
