The pictures are clear and there are an amazing array of stitches explained. The stitches include instructions for using ribbon. The instructions are so easy to follow and in no time you are creating beautiful things. I cannot describe the amazing amount of stitches that are in this book. It's one of those books that no matter how long you have it you will always use it. This is a book that anyone wanting or already embroidering will want for their collection. It's a book that would be brilliant as a Christmas Gift or for adding that extra special something to a gift you've made. Thread, needles, and fabric are the triumvirate of necessary materials required for all embroidery projects, and an introductory discussion of those factors is joined by commentary on transferring design onto fabric. Once these important preliminary issues are cleared, then the meat of the book is offered: the stitches themselves, from simple to complicated. The thing to realize about this book is that every stitch is afforded clear and detailed textual directions augmented by exquisitely clear photographs. * Booklist *March 2015 This is a timeless and useful guide to embroidery stitches. It offers step-by-step instructions to an A-Z of stitches with clear, easy to follow photos. Find out how to create the perfect bullion knot and much more with professional techniques. It includes all the stitches you need for any stitch project. The only downside is that you might have this book as it was previously published in Australia in 2000 by Country Bumpkin. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *March 2015 I love the simplicity of cross stitch, you make a row of diagonal lines going one way and then you go back the other way. It’s easy to get into a rhythm because it’s all the same, over and over. But embroidery is a whole different ballgame, there are tons of stitches. Apparently, far more than I even realized because A-Z of Embroidery Stitches* is full of ones I’ve never even heard of! I had a hard time even getting a photo of the contents pages listing all the stitches, there are so many! I counted and there are 84 different stitches listed, and that doesn’t even count all the variations like the 8 types of blanket stitches. I tried my hand at a couple of the stitches in the book and I found the photos all really easy to follow and the directions to be clear. Besides a handful of basic stitches, I always need to reference either YouTube videos or an online guide when doing embroidery stitches. I really appreciated the little diagram that appears on the top showing all the different steps at once. It was really helpful for me to get an idea of the progression of the stitches. In addition to all the different stitches there is also a great general overview on getting started with embroidery – transferring designs, choosing needles, finishing your embroideries… There are also tips for left handed embroiderers and a lot of great information about thread painting and working with ribbon. The cover of the book advertises it as “a complete manual for the beginner through to the advanced embroiderer” and I would definitely agree. This is a truly comprehensive stitch guide and I was really impressed with how easy to follow the photos and directions are. I was also excited to see that there are a bunch of other “A to Z” embroidery books either out or that will be released this year – whitework, needlepoint, threadpainting, ribbon embroidery, stumpwork. I’m really excited to check out some of these, especially if they are as detailed as this one! HarperCollins Publishers Jane Austen Embroidery: Authentic embroidery
Book Synopsis 15 beautiful embroidery projects from the era of Jane Austen. Jane Austen was as skilful with a needle as she was with a pen. This unique book from Jennie Batchelor and Alison Larkin showcases recently discovered 18th century embroidery patterns expertly repurposed into 15 exciting modern stitching projects. The patterns and projects are brought to life with glimpses into the world of Regency women and their domestic lives by lively historical features, quotes from Jane Austen’s letters and novels, enchanting illustrations and inspirational project photography. The book opens with an illustrated introduction on historical embroidery. Next comes the materials and methods section, clearly explaining the key stitches, as well as providing information on threads, fabrics and frames. The practical section includes 15 projects for modern items. The projects are divided into three chapters according to the item the 18th century pattern was originally intended for with patterns for different skill levels: Embroidered Clothes: Dressed to Impress: Projects include Simple Sprig Pattern (Two Ways), Pencil Case, Clutch Purse, Apron, Housewife.Embroidered Accessories: How Do You Like My Trimming?: Projects include Napkin Set, Mobile Phone Pouch, Tablet Sleeve, Jewellery Pouch, Muslin Shawl.Embroidery for the Home: A ‘Nest of Comforts’: Projects include Tea Box Top, Work Bag, Cushion, Sewing Set, Tablecloth. Search Press Ltd The Hand-Stitched Flower Garden: Over 45
Book SynopsisLearn how to create beautiful and understated decorative stitching motifs. The designs feature surface and dimensional stitches and bead embroidery; with motifs inspired by nature ranging from roses, sunflowers, asters and daisies to little bumblebees, ladybugs and dragonflies. All 20 projects include step-by-step instructions and actual size templates. Learn how to make brooches, small bags and purses, cushion covers, picture frames and more. The variety of motif combinations will keep you stitching all year round.Trade ReviewTake up freestyle hand embroidery and use your new skills to adorn twenty projects. There are some imaginative choices for items to decorate in here, ranging from the ubiquitous cushion, egg cozy and pin cushion, to a hair barrette, decorated coat hanger cover, oven mitt and sewing machine cover. The book is divided into four seasonal sections, starting with a few pages showing the featured embroidered flowers. Then follow the projects, although not all of the flowers are used -- some only appear at the back as patterns. Each project has staged photographic instructions that are easy to follow even for those fairly new to sewing projects, together with a picture of the finished item in situ, a list of what fabric and thread you need, plus a list of stitches. The color palette is shown as a key with actual photographs of stitches worked with the thread (DMC), a nice touch. Some patterns can be measured out directly; others appear as patterns in their projects or at the back, either full sized or requiring sizing. This does not need to be done on a computer or copier, but dimensions are listed so you can draw out the patterns yourself. All the embroidery stitches are shown at the back and have been chosen to suit the subjects, so range from standard freestyle stitches, such as long and short, French knots, and chain to more exotic offerings like granitos stitch, ghiordes knot stitch, and double drizzle stitch. There are also projects involving beads, even a bit of ribbon embroidery, and stumpwork to add interest to the embroiderer and show what a bit of hand stitching can do. At the back are also all the drawn patterns for the flowers etc., with indications as to which stitch goes where, plus how to do the various types of fancier work. Under the heading of "Getting Started," you can find out about threads, transferring methods, resizing, and what you need to kit yourself out as a hand embroiderer. As for the patterns, choose from mimosa, plum blossom, yew berries, cosmos, safflower, wild strawberries and others, along with bees, butterflies, snowflakes and other accents (over 45 of them). This is a lovely book destined for many a keeper shelf that would be ideal for beginners upward. * Rachel Hyde - Myshelf.com *Inspired by nature, Yuki presents over 45 exquisite embroidery designs and 20 projects in this beautiful book. The designs reflect the seasons and include something for everyone, from Acorns to Witch-hazel! Full-size templates are included together with step-by-step instructions, and detailed stitch techniques will ensure success for all abilities. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *May 2016 This book provides over 45 beautiful floral designs to embroider, plus 20 projects to make, giving endless possibilites for you to mix and match motifs and create designs of your own too. Split into four chapters following the seaons, the flowers for each season are shown stitched on to a plain linen background, followed by a selection of stylish projects, incorporating the motifs, with full clear step-by-step instructions. Comprehensive tools, materials and stitch guide can be found at the back. This book will give you an endless source of inspiration. * Love to Make *'The Hand Stitched Flower Garden is a reflection of my passion for flowers and embroidery, designed to encourage others thinking about trying embroidery to get started and introduce techniques beyond the basics to those looking to advance their skills. The book consists of two parts: a collection of motifs to stitch and project ideas for using those designs. The motifs section is arranged by season and features a variety of botanical motifs with insects here and there, for fun. These motifs range in difficulty from simple ones using just a few easy stitches to ones that use materials like ribbons and beads or dimensional techniques. So there’s a little bit of a variety of things to provide a taste of different avenues to explore and to show that knowing one extra method can really expand the possibilities. The projects section features items for the home and fashion accessories, namely, things that can be used in everyday life. I tend to be a practical person and wanted to offer ideas that would be useful in some way, so an embroiderer can enjoy using the finished piece as much as the stitching process. The projects are generally simple and straightforward to construct to make it easy to adapt them to different motifs and materials. They are intended as blank canvases on which an embroiderer can stitch her favorite motif.' - Yuki Sugishima For the full article visit: http://www.needlenthread.com/2015/11/yuki-sugashima-on-the-hand-stitched-flower-garden.html * Mary Corbett's Needle'n'Thread *I love stitching and I love flowers, so this book combines two of the loves of my life. I know many stitching friends, who like me, will appreciate this book. There are 45 embroidery designs accompanied by 20 projects to make. You can mix and match flower motifs to make your own designs. This book will provide an endless source of inspiration. Apart from the introduction and tools and resources, the book is split into four chapters – following the four seasons of the year. The embroidered flowers are shown in colour, 3 to a page. They include beautiful flowers like tulip, lavender, magnolia and mimosa, but also ladybirds and butterflies. The projects are practical yet beautiful. I love the sewing machine cover, the butterfly pincushion, the oven mitt, all the projects are handsome. Step-by-step instructions are given for the projects. An elegant book of embroidered projects that will appeal to a wide range of stitchers. Highly recommended. * Karen Platt- yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *The cover of this book just gives you a small glimpse in to the beautiful and amazing designs held within this book. There are 45 beautiful floral designs to embroider and 20 projects ideas as well. The projects surprised me the most in this book. Not only are you getting the beautiful designs you also get full instructions, including pictures, to make the different projects. I love the fact that there are step-by-step instructions and the pictures are so clear that you will easily understand how to make everything. The book is split into to season's of the year. Each season provides you with the pattern for the beautiful floral designs and the projects to use them on. At the back of the book everything is covered from the tools, materials and techniques used. You are then also provided with a stitch directory. I cannot express enough how professional and sophisticated the designs in this book are. The book gives you the opportunity to create amazing and beautiful items. You can use the designs on the projects in the book or you can use them to embellish your own projects. This book is worth every penny and more besides. * Crochet Addict UK *Introduction Author, Yuki Sugashima remembers the time she rediscovered her old box of threads and that being the trigger of the interest in embroidery craft. Her previous experience as a floral designer meant she was soon creating floral motifs in thread. Range of information All the information required to make the items is condensed down to 4 pages each, or so, including photographic imagery, diagrams and the method to undertake the making. Each project has a brief introduction, a colour palette, 'you will need' information, diagrammatic instruction and photography. There is a tools, materials and technique guide, plus actual size templates at the back end of the book 9/10 Quality of information The purpose of the short introductions are to share a few tips and to link the themes. There is opportunity to learn/use surface and dimensional stitching and bead embroidery, and though not hugely comprehensive the information does fully support the aim to do the best job at recreating Sugashima's embroidered range of items 9/10 Layout Size and format is similar to a lifestyle/fashion magazine (not glossy). Paperback book is 23 cm Long x 18 cm Wide. Instructions are in fonts that are quite small and fine. One full paged image is included for each project and a lovely double paged feature spread appears in each section which showcases flora and fauna embroidery 8/10 Photography/Illustration Eye catching, full colour photography, images are of high quality 8/10 Features Contains 128 pages. Pages numbers are labeled on each of the double paged features I mentioned in Layout to direct you over to stitching information 8/10 Conclusion I haven't put needle to fabric using this book as a guide as yet so am unable to feedback specifically about the accuracy and effectiveness of the projects. This is a nicely presented book however, with some inspirational designs to embroider. The project ideas are quite traditional i.e. egg cosy, oven gloves and apron, but items such as these, when completed, could get stained easily during food preparation so the time and energy in adding hand embroidery motifs could be regarded as bittersweet if they happen to get spoiled, and if shrinkage occurs, or if dyes from the threads were to bleed out in a warm wash. Personally, I admire the skill and the work involved and I think the outcomes are very pleasing, but delicate embroidery is better applied, I feel, to items such as covers, pouches and fashion accessories. Therefore, I may set up one of the projects as a workshop theme when my craft group next meets, or make an item or two and giveaway as keepsake gifts to the same sewing friends. First, however, I need to get to grips with embroidery techniques and the contents of this book may well send me on the right road. * Debra Hall -Notcompulsory.blogspot.co.uk *

With a short but useful section on colour mixing with carders, and a shopping list of additional elements required for various features, the book then goes into the basic techniques of needle felting including using forms to help create shapes. After teaching the basic forms that are required for the projects, how to create features and joining forms to make larger shapes, we then launch into the projects that progress quite quickly from simple to more complex. I particularly liked the ‘Small World’ pincushion in a cup and ‘Felt a Face’. With templates at the back, this book takes you from a novice to feeling fairly competent. Out of all the many books I have gathered over the years I haven’t been as keen to use one as much as this. In this book Steph covers everything from what you need to get started, how to attach your fabric to the hoop and how to finish your piece ready to hang on the wall. All the steps are supported with photographs and illustrations to make it super simple especially for the newbies and younger stitchers. There’s even some iron on templates to help you start creating your personalised embroidery journal. They are large in size which was a lightbulb moment. Why haven’t I scaled up before to fit more on? The stitch guide is by far the best I have used. I’ve seen so many over the years but this one beats the rest. All the stitches are broken down into 4 or 5 steps (something I try and do as a teacher so as not to confuse and put them off). Steph and the Oh Sew Bootiful team are masters at not overcomplicating things. The photos are plentiful and the book is laid out in a way that is accessible to all. Sometimes I struggle with ideas but with this book it is easy to find inspiration. There’s a quick reference contents page at the front of all the sections and at the back an index of all 1000 motifs. The alphabet, numbers and diacritics are really handy too. The way each motif has been illustrated and photographed stitched up means you could adapt existing ones to personalise them such as changing the colour, adding symbols etc. The addition of the featured artists and their creations is brilliant. Ultimate goals right there. I’ve now got tons of ideas. The book is a handy size which means it’s perfect for popping in my kit and taking on my travels. The Great Outdoors section is going to be used on repeat (and the Sweet Treats! Overall 10/10 and 5*. You will not be disappointed and neither will all the stitchers you gift it to, it’s the perfect present! Here’s to years of creative stitch journaling courtesy of Steph and Search Press! -- Sue Riley * Customer Review *This book is beautiful. A lovingly created journal tells a story. It provides a fascinating glimpse into your world and is a beautiful object in its own right to be cherished by generations to come. All of the techniques are explained with clear instructions and step-by-step photographs, so even those who are just setting out on their creative journey will find inspiration and all the know-how they need to make their own gorgeous daydream journals.Trade ReviewDaydream Journals by Tilly Rose is jam packed with inspiration for those looking to create mixed media journals. Tilly shares the techniques and inspirations behind her beautiful journals, teaching you how to use fabric, paper, embroidery and natural products like flowers, leaves, berries and twigs to create unique masterpieces. This book is not so much a step-by-step instruction manual for creating exact replicas of her journals. Rather it is one that gives you the starting point for creating your own unique journals. She shares her sources of inspiration, as well as well as giving advice on finding your own. Some of the many techniques covered in the book include Indian block printing, flower tapping, solar dying, creating natural dyes, adding embellishments, embroidery stitches, applique and crazy patchwork. The first half of the book is focused on inspiration and techniques, the second half is project based. The projects are intended more as a starting point, showing you the basic steps for creating the items featured but encouraging you to decide upon the finer details yourself. So that your finished project will be personal and unique. There are a few different journal projects plus a button jar project and a small embroidered bag. See the collage below for some of the projects from the book. This gorgeous book is sure to have you bursting with inspiration and ready to stitch your own daydream journal in no time! -- Fiona Pullen * The Sewing Directory *A sense of family and relationships, nature, and memories emanates from Rose's special way to journal. With more than just words and doodles, UK-based author Rose (Stitched Memories, 2018) encourages readers to seriously stop, smell, hear, and taste their surroundings as journaling inspiration. She encourages the addition of flowers and other botanicals using methods (some of which she invented) like squishing, petal washing, flower tapping, berry squishing, leaf imprints, and solar dyeing. These techniques are further boosted by creativity with fabric and thread, such as couching and appliqué, all explained with good captions and colour photographs. As for the mystery of putting it all together, plenty of paper clips, safety pins, glue, and other adherents become the foundation for eight projects, most of which are books, like "diary of a fen gal," inspired by nature walks. There's also a "jar of smiles" to hold odds and ends; a scrolled journal; and a purse. Fusing craft and nature, Rose's endeavour emits an otherworldly aura. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *Textile artists find inspiration all around them, from fleeting memories to treasured items, sketches, poems and photos. Search Press Ltd Goldwork: Techniques, Projects and Pure
Book SynopsisHazel Everett is an exceptionally skilled goldwork embroiderer, and in this beautiful book she passes on her knowledge and expertise in a way that is both practical and visually stunning. Drawing on traditional methods, she creates works that are brilliantly executed, in a style that is both modern and unique. Here, Hazel provides expert guidance and advice on an extensive range of goldwork embroidery techniques. Her detailed descriptions and step-by-step instructions are accompanied by clear diagrams and embroidered samples, all carefully and exquisitely worked by the author herself. Throughout the book there are numerous examples of the author's own work, providing inspiration for embroiderers who wish to extend their skills in this fascinating area. The book ends with ten fabulous projects, including richly worked samplers, Christmas tree decorations and needle books, all using the full range of techniques, threads and other materials that the reader has learnt about in the previous sections of the book. This is an invaluable reference for those already familiar with the art of goldwork embroidery, as well as an excellent starting point for anyone wishing to embark upon it. A unique source of information and inspiration for anyone interested in goldwork embroidery. All of the major techniques and materials associated with goldwork embroidery are explained through clear, step-by-step instructions, worked samples and diagrams, and there are ten fabulous projects to put into practice all the reader has learnt, allowing them to produce beautiful embroideries of their own. Numerous exquisitely worked pieces provide inspiration and ideas.Trade ReviewThe Royal School of Needlework has been producing their Essential Stitch Guide series in conjunction with Search Press for a couple years now. I’ve reviewed all the books in the series so far (Blackwork, Crewelwork, Silk Shading, Stumpwork, and Whitework). The most recent addition to the series is the Goldwork stitch guide, by Helen McCook. Here’s a glimpse of it and my impressions. I’ve been waiting for the goldwork stitch guide for a while! When the RSN first started their series of Essential Stitch Guides, goldwork was my first thought. So, as soon as I saw that the release date was coming up, I pre-ordered a copy so I could get my eager, grimy paws on it as quickly as possible. I watched for the mail daily. Contemplating the golden delights within, I dreamt about the book nightly. I sighed for it. I pined for it… And, although I am exaggerating more than a little bit on those points, I will admit that I did build up quite a bit of anticipation for this book, which can always be a dangerous thing when you want to look at a book objectively. After the book arrived and I gave it a good once-over, I had to set it aside and come back to it for a twice-over, and then a thrice-over. Finally, I’m ready to write about it. Essential Stitch Guides: the Rudiments of Embroidery Techniques Keep in mind that the Essential Stitch Guide series is a collection of small, accessible books that are meant to introduce embroiderers to specific types of needlework. Within the confines of the book size, the whole scope of the technique could never be covered. Instead, what we get in these stitch guides are the rudiments of the technique, enough to introduce and teach the basics. The stitch guides are not thorough, exhaustive books on the subjects they cover – they can’t be. And really, can any single book on any technique be? So, as introductory books, they form an excellent reference and guide for embroiderers. At the beginning of the goldwork stitch guide, we get the initial information that we find in the rest of the series: information on the RSN, an introduction to the topic, a short (and, in this case, quite limited) history of the topic. Goldwork: A Limited History I was somewhat disappointed with the history section in this book, though again, we have to remember that the books are small and not meant to be exhaustive. The history of goldwork here is limited to goldwork in England – a bit of talk about the wealth of kings and the pomp of ecclesiastical ceremony, and then the involvement of the RSN in creating and maintaining significant goldwork embroideries. When reading the history part, try not to forget that goldwork in the West was taken to incredible heights in Belgium, in France, in Italy, in Spain; and further, we can’t really ignore the influence of the Far East on goldwork. Again, it’s a small book. But really, does our outlook have to be quite so small? A little mention of other significant places where goldwork flourished would have at least broadened the perspective of those reading the history section. Granted, most folks don’t purchase a stitch guide or instructional book to read history – and so we move on to the meat of the matter, which is, of course, the rest of the book. Goldwork Threads: This is Worth It! The section on materials, and specifically on the threads used in goldwork, is worth the price of the book, even for just these few short pages of information. Why? Although many other goldwork books go into the types of metal threads used in goldwork, they don’t necessarily go into what the threads are composed of and how they’re made. This book does. It’s brief, but good information. This type of information can help the embroiderer determine how, or how not, to use specific threads and how to identify threads. Goldwork Instruction Before instructing on actual methods, we learn how to frame up our ground fabric, a little bit about design and how to work up a design concept before beginning, some information on starting to stitch (how to thread a needle, starting the thread, the use of beeswax and the like), the order of work (an excellent section for the beginner!), and a very nice section on the various types of padding. The instructional content in the goldwork stitch guide is delivered via step-by-step photos and photos of finished stitch samples. All aspects of basic goldwork are covered: couching threads (passing thread, Japanese gold, plunging the threads, couching in a circle, using pearl purl, etc.); what the author calls “cutwork” (chip work – the use of purls and so forth); working with kid leather; s-ing; spangles; plate; embroidery stitches with gold threads (i.e. working chain stitch or fly stitch with cut purls); using color (diaper couching, or nué); and finally, combining techniques. You can get a very good idea of the instructional photos and other content by viewing this PDF from Search Press that offers some full-sized pages of the inside of the Goldwork Stitch Guide. It’s definitely worth looking at – you’ll see at least three good examples of goldwork pieces from the RSN collections used as illustrations, too. The final section on combining techniques is where you’ll find pictures of various projects worked by the author that will provide inspiration for your own goldwork. Keep in mind, this is not a project book, so you won’t actually find instructions for completing the projects shown here, but you will find details on the techniques used in each project, with clear photos so you can get an idea of how to incorporate the techniques into your own goldwork projects. The book ends with an index. Pros & Cons Cons: 1. Truthfully, as far as the instruction goes, it’s all been done before. If you have the A-Z of Goldwork or Hazel Everett’s goldwork book, you aren’t going to find new instruction here, and the A-Z of Goldwork and Hazel Everett’s book are a bit more thorough, because they’re a bit larger and can fit more in. 2. I found the history part somewhat irksome. I do wish the book had at least glanced beyond the shores of England. 3. At just under $20 once the exchange rate is figured, it is somewhat expensive, especially if you already have the books mentioned in #1 above. However, it is likely that the price of the book will decrease a bit once it is available in your country. You won’t have the exchange rate and long-distance postage to worry about, anyway. Pros: 1. I really like the description of the threads in this book. 2. The instructional content is good, clear, and succinct – enough information to get the beginner started on the goldwork journey. 3. The book is small, easily portable, has a spiral binding for easy opening while working – it’s a nicely made book. 4. Of course, who wouldn’t love the pictures from the RSN collections? 6. It’s a worthwhile member of the series. It’s nice to have these reference books on each technique in one compact, matching series. -- Mary Corbet * Mary Corbet's Needle 'n' Thread *Nov 12 This satisfying book gives details of designing a motif, a clear order to approach any project and techniques to use. There are also good sections on Or Nué and using kid. The second section offers a good selection of projects, especially clear diagrams on insects. The close-up photography shows the detail of each piece. Text and pictures are well matched and make any embroiderer want to start a project, especially the two in the final chapter, of a Dragon and Seahorse. A complete beginner to Goldwork would gain confidence using new materials and the experienced worker would be stretched by the author’s enthusiasm and skill. A lovely soft covered volume that would enhance any sewer’s shelf. * Merseyside Embroiderer's Guild (megonline.co.uk) *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 History 8 Equipment 10 Needles 12 Frames 14 Fabrics 20 Transferring a design 22 Designing a motif 24 Order of work 26 Padding 30 Metal threads 35 TECHNIQUES 40 Pearl purl 42 Purls 47 Shading with chippings 50 Stem stitch formation 52 Purl loops 54 Embellishing beads and stones with purls 56 Graded cutwork 58 Geometric cutwork 60 Plunging threads 62 Couched threads 63 Or Nué 66 Twists 68 Handmade twists 70 Broad, 11’s and whipped plate 72 Crimped plate 74 Milliary 76 Kid 78 Spangles 80 Elizabethan twist 82 Flatworm 83 Embroidery stitches 84 Appliqué 87 PROJECTS 88 Flowers 88 Bugs 94 Fritillary 104 Butterfly 106 Cornucopia 110 Hanging decorations 116 Needlebooks 126 Dragon 134 Seahorse 138 Glossary 142 Index 143

What more could you need? Excellent! -- Nia Kirwin * Customer review *Comprehensive directory of stitches with clear photographic reference and easy-to-follow diagrams. 200 embroidery stitches in all for cross or chain stitch, couching, canvas work, laid work, drawn thread work and decorative stitches. They are arranged according to use. This book should be on every embroiderer's bookshelf. It is particularly useful to beginners or those wishing to enlarge their knowledge of stitches and expand their embroidery work. There is a stitch selector and embroidery essentials. Alternative names for the stitch are given where known as well as usage and notes. The front cover says 'pages lay flat for ease of working' - this is incorrect - the pages do not lay flat. This book has been previously published and is an updated edition. * Karen Platt *Expand your enjoyment of embroidery by learning over 200 stitches. Whatever your preferred style or fabric there is a stitch for it and this larger format reissue of the 2003 original is an essential resource for all levels of embroiderer. Although a total beginner might be daunted by the sheer number of stitches, they could learn all the basics (and more) from this useful book. As well as the stitches there are sections on all the essential topics from what you need to start through to choosing fabrics, working from charts, using a hoop and finishing off. Turn to the back for a short section looking at various types of embroidery, both freestyle and canvas. Each short description contains photographs and diagrams to whet the appetite, plus lists of stitches associated with the style and a brief history. The bulk of the book is given to the stitches themselves, which are divided into two sections (fabric and canvas) and helpfully showcased at the front in a stitch selector. The stitches are grouped in families eg line, chain, blanket, smocking, loops, pulled etc which makes searching for a stitch suitable for a particular effect or style easier. Each stitch is shown photographed, and then how to work it is shown in one or more colored diagrams. These are very clear because they are drawn with the thread a contrasting color to the background, which also contrasts with the white page. They are also large enough to be easily seen, and backed up with written instructions. At the base of the page the stitch’s uses are given, plus any notes. There is an index at the back, and a page showing more embroidery books by Search Press so you can take your knowledge further. There are no patterns or projects but this is not that type of book; instead this is one you will never finish working through which is suitable for every level of embroiderer. Highly recommended. * myshelf.com *Probably the most comprehensive embroidery book I've seen. Really well illustrated, each stitch has photos as well as diagrams, which I find very helpful. Also shows finishing techniques and a description of various embroidery styles. If you only buy one book on embroidery, this should be it! -- Linda Jesuadian * Customer review *This is a fab book. I can't put it down! As a beginner to embroidery, and student at a creative textile class, this is invaluable. All types of embroidery is covered and when you find the areas you are really interested in, the instruction is clear, detailed and easy to follow, not just a brief overview. The Crowood Press Ltd Bayeux Stitch
Book SynopsisThe term ‘Bayeux stitch’ often describes the laid and couched work that was used across Europe in the middle ages. This practical book of techniques and projects demonstrates the simple style of the Bayeux tapestry, before showing variations based on both surviving examples and adaptations of medieval manuscripts. It explains the narrow range of stitches used in laid and couched work and introduces the limited colour palette in medieval embroidery and the rhythmic use of colour. There are twelve projects with step-by-step sequences that illustrate how to stitch subjects ranging from knights to trees, and from dragons to bishops. By introducing subtle variations of techniques and materials, Tanya Bentham illustrates the endless potential of this beautiful embroidery, and brings it alive for today’s embroiderers.

The book is written very well, taking into account both beginners and more experienced sewists. The designs are very well photographed, and the instructions are really clear and easy to follow. There is a wide variety of designs, and the techniques for woven or knitted mending are quite decorative. The only thing that seems to be missing is any tips on how to stop the material used for patching on the woven sections from fraying. Other than this minor comment, this book is very educational and enjoyable. Well worth the money. -- Jacqui Grainger * Amazon Customer Review *This book is easy to follow and full of inspiration. An excellent book to inspire both beginners and experienced sewers; even those who have never picked up a needle to have can have a go at decorative mending before throwing away a loved garment or item. Textile artist Alice Fox shows how to work with found, foraged, gathered and grown materials to create fabulous textile pieces that are inspired by, and made from, nature. Search Press Ltd Beginner's Guide to Silk Ribbon Embroidery:
Book SynopsisLearn how to create exquisite, delicately embroidered silk ribbon flowers, including foxgloves, roses, hydrangeas, delphiniums, primroses, geraniums, irises, poppies... and much more. A small selection of stitches are used to create a wide variety of flowers. All the techniques are explained in detailed step-by-step sequences.Trade ReviewOctober 2014 I learned ribbon embroidery with this book and went on to teach classes and make various embroidered items using this lovely method. First published in 1998 this is one of the Classics range of stand out titles that belong firmly on every crafter’s keeper shelf. This is a user-friendly primer that gets you started right away before pictures of advanced work and worse still, what you might have to buy can frighten you. Fortunately that mostly means ribbons, embroidery floss, a hoop and if you want to stencil or paint backgrounds materials for this, otherwise there is no large outlay before you can start. Learn how to anchor ribbon and the special stitch unique to ribbon embroidery plus a few other adaptations of freestyle stitches and before long you will be working on your first picture, a study of spring flowers. If you have done some embroidery before you will find it easier as you have already learned much of what you need to know, but even if you haven’t expect clear photographs and captions guide you through the process. Why is this book a classic? I have several other books on the subject but none is so obviously aimed at the beginner, and with a subject that has not had a lot of coverage (especially back in 1998) this is essential. It literally takes you from choosing the ribbon through practising the stitches to making several small, simple but beautiful pieces. If you are at all interested in having a go and don’t already own this book do buy it. Very highly recommended. * Myshelf.com *October 2014 This was first published in 1998 and even looks dated for then, it has been re-published but not re-designed. However the information given is still relevant and useful and at this price, you cannot expect more. This book includes all the information you need to create stunning silk flowers, including framing your work. The Bouquet of Roses is my favourite. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *September/October 2014 Over one hundred step-by-step photographs show how to create exquisite, delicately embroidered silk ribbon flowers, using a surprisingly small number of stitches. Dip in and out of the book as you wish, and follow your own creative embroidery aspirations! The book starts out by introducing all that you need to become an embroiderer, and then explains the basic techniques: preparing your fabric, threading the needle, and even displaying your work in a hoop. Learn a selection of simple stitches, before progressing to more complex stitches that will take your embroidery skills to the next level. Let costume designer Coline Bavois, and The Embroidery Stitch Companion, become your indispensable guides to this timeless needlecraft.Trade ReviewI’m going to be brutally honest in saying that I have read a lot of embroidery books and I am super hard to impress in this area because there are a lot on the market. This book, however, massively exceeded my expectations and I was utterly impressed from start to finish! It is a smaller size book which makes it the perfect accompaniment to take with you whether that be on holiday, the work commute, the sofa, by the bed, or anywhere else you’d like to stitch! Whilst it is small in stature, it definitely is not lacking! In part 1, the embroidery essentials are covered including fabrics (and how different fabrics will react to stitches differently), threads (stranded, tapestry, wool, metallic, silk), needles, scissors, embroidery hoops, marking tools, transfer papers and more. It has top tips, illustrations, written text, and easily accessible information. Part 2 then guides you through basic techniques such as preparing the fabric, transferring your designs, securing your fabric in the hoop, best practice for using your thread, threading your needle, securing your thread (with different options including knots, waste knots, filling methods), and finishing off your embroidery. Each subsection is clearly presented with a heading, subheading, written text and images (where needed). It is truly wondrous reading through the book and seeing stitches that you think you know so well being used in such beautiful and creative ways. -- Naomi Clarke * naomialice.co.uk *I'm a textile artist and teach embroidery in some of my classes. I can see this book being a great recommendation for any of my students who don't have any previous experience, and for those who need a reminder. Experienced stitchers will enjoy the look and feel of the book, but may get less from it in the longer term. As is says on the cover, the author focusses on her favourite, and most used stitches. So be aware that this is NOT a stitch dictionary for expanding your stitching repertoire if you already know the basics. It doesn't pretend to be that, and there are plenty of those about. This book fits into it's own niche perfectly. A pocket-sized embroidery primer that will travel with you while you build your skills and confidence. -- Nicky Prys-Jones * Customer Review *Costume designer and embroidery aficionado Bavois’s book is sure to attract newcomers to the field of needle arts. She covers embroidery essentials, including types of fabrics, needles, threads, hoops, and transfer papers. Her book, written in precise language, teaches basic techniques, such as preparing the fabric, threading needles, and fastening off. There’s also decorative advice and a visual stitch guide that demonstrates how to create running, stem, back, blanket, and cross stitches with French and bullion knots. This handbook’s instructions progress in complexity. It includes illustrations and photographs that are clear with easy-to-understand directions. The last part of the book shows more advanced techniques, such as using appliqués, embroidering a T-shirt, and incorporating and applying beads. VERDICT A well-organized and thoughtful embroidery guide. Great for beginners wishing to learn an exciting new skill. Also for experienced embroiderers who need or want to brush up on their techniques and improve their skills. -- Library Journal * Library Journal *Table of ContentsCONTENTS Introduction 4 PART ONE: Embroidery essentials 6 Fabrics 8, Threads 10, Needles 12, Scissors 14, Embroidery hoops 15, Erasable marking pens 16, Transfer papers 18 PART TWO: Basic techniques 20 Preparing the fabric 22, Transferring designs 24, Securing the fabric 26, Thread best-practice 30, Threading needles 33, Starting to stitch 34, Fastening off 38, Final touches 42, Displaying the embroidery in its hoop 44, Decorative ideas 48, General advice 50 PART THREE: Stitch guide 52 Running stitch 56, Laced running stitch 58, Backstitch 60, Whipped backstitch 62, Stem stitch 64, Couching stitch 66, Chain stitch 68, Detached chain stitch 70, Fly stitch 72, Blanket stitch 74, Feather stitch 76, Cross stitch 78, French knot 80, Bullion knot 82, Straight stitch 86, Scattered straight stitch 88, Satin stitch 90, Shaded satin stitch 92, Planning a design 96 PART FOUR: Further ideas 98 Using appliqué to attach embroidery 102, Embroidering a T-shirt (or other stretchy fabric) 108, Embroidering with beads 112, Further creative inspiration 125 Acknowledgements 128

Search Press Ltd Crewel Embroidery: 7 Enchanting Designs Inspired
Book SynopsisIn this beautiful book, Tatiana Popova shows the reader how to create stunning crewelwork embroideries inspired by traditional fairy tales, including The Wizard of Oz, Karolcia, the Wild Swans and Cinderella. This magical collection takes as its central theme a magnificent embroidery depicting the ‘Tree of Happiness’. Each part of the embroidery is then explored in detail through stitch diagrams, explanations of the threads used, and alternative ways of working. There are seven wonderful designs in total, each dedicated to one of Tatiana’s favourite fairy tales, and all illustrated with gorgeous photographs and informative diagrams. Over 90 stitches are described in the book, all worked using stranded cotton and cotton pearl thread rather than traditional crewel wool, which gives the embroideries a fresh, modern appeal. Whether you are new to embroidery or an experienced embroiderer looking for inspiration and expert guidance, Tatiana’s beautiful book is one you will turn to again and again.Trade ReviewLast year I reviewed this author’s first book The Seasons in Silk Ribbon Embroidery on this site. This was a book with the wow factor in spades, a rare treat for the more advanced embroiderer. A year on and here is another such book, this time showing what crewel embroidery is capable of when inspired by fairy tales. The main project in this book is a larger piece entitled Tree of Happiness. Each section of this is also featured as a smaller design elsewhere in a different colorway, and each of these sections was inspired by a different fairy tale. Ms Popova is from the Ukraine, so the tales are more varied than they would be from an English speaking author. Andersen’s The Wild Swans are featured as is the Wizard of Oz and Cinderella, but there are also Polish and Russian stories plus a ribbonwork owl, the inspiration behind the author’s website name. To learn the stitches start at the beginning where you will find some very clear and foolproof staged photographs. There are also many tips here, and a gallery of photographs showing the whole tree plus all the separate elements. Each of these is also shown paler with a numbered key showing which stitch goes where with a handy page reference. This is a large format book and there are plenty of good-sized photographs with close-ups so you get a good idea of what the work is supposed to look like. Each chapter covers a different element, and as well as the expected key and list of materials there is a brief description of the story plus a personal reminiscence about how the author was inspired to choose it. This makes for interesting reading, and also caused me to ponder on what gets my own creative juices flowing. The embroidery uses Appletons wools or DMC threads which include stranded cottons (including variegated) plus pearl cotton sizes 8 and 12. The instructions are clear, but despite the author’s claim that beginners can tackle the projects I imagine most newbie embroiderers would be better starting with simpler work. Turn to the back for the outlines and advice on transferring to fabric, including tips for working on patterned material. This is definitely one for that keeper shelf, and my favorite book of 2020 so far. I can’t wait for book three! -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *This is a book filled with stunning crewel work embroidery. The designs are inspired by the fairy tales we all love and each design is accompanied with the story which brings each piece to life. Tatiana Popova is a major craftswoman in her art, and what she does is beautiful. She not only demonstrates the techniques of crewel, she simplifies and breaks down each design into small achievable parts. Diagrams, stitches and an array of colourful glossy photographs showcase the thread work and many of them have a 3D effect so it is easy to see each stage. These stages are divided into ‘zones’ which make it simple to understand. A lot of useful information is included and there is a conversion guide for various threads. I highly recommend this book. -- Tracy Shephard * Amazon *A beautiful book with excellent instructions and images. The images are good enough to aid your stitching. I love that you can do elements of the design or put it all together as one large design if you are more competent. A nice range of stitches covered as well with plenty of 'how to' instruction. A new author for me but one I will be looking at again. -- Claire Madder * Amazon *Oh what a fabulous book. I’m new to crewel embroidery so have to keep referring to the stitch patterns early on in the book but it’s all there! Exactly what I needed. The instructions are so well illustrated. I like the way the whole design is divided into 12 zones. I loved the storytelling behind each design. A truly inspiring book. -- Karen Callis * Amazon *Issue March/April This is a colourful wow of a book with appeal for those who admire crewel work but would appreciate a modern approach: Tatiana Popova's colourful designs and fluid approach to materials tick those boxes. Favouring stranded cotton and cotton pearl thread over traditional crewel wool gives her designs a contemporary feel, along with multiple options for different colour palettes and a wider range of 90 stitches, all of which are explained in clear instructions (with helpful photos of stitches, rather than diagrams), detailed photography and pattern diagrams to copy. Popova has established her own aesthetic, with designs that are equally enticing to novices as well as established stitchers. * Embroidery *A beautiful book! Tatiana tells folktales which link to each element of the design. These are stand alone designs which can be either embroidered individually or combined to make the gorgeous Tree of Life design seen on the cover. Stitch instructions are provided in alphabetical order for all the stitches used and the photographs are stunning. This is a truly exquisite book, I own a LOT of embroidery books, but this is definitely one of my favourites. -- Rachel Clarke * Amazon *While I'm only an occasional embroiderer, crewel is my favourite technique by far and I have a few books on the subject. This book has some great photography, with many large, vivid, detailed images so you can really see what you're supposed to be doing. The stitch instructions are particularly strong - I really like the way that the author uses different colours to show how the stitches build up. This is a vibrant book with delicious photos and it's a worthwhile addition to any embroidery library - if I were thinking about buying a crewelwork kit, I'd definitely pull this out instead as the instructions are so good. -- Kate Rawlinson * Amazon *On the whole I am enjoying this book, the pictures and stitch descriptions are excellent, the folk tales charming and the patterns challenging. I would recommend this book for intermediate level and above. -- Alison Finch * Amazon *This is a truly beautiful book. The photography is fantastic making the embroidery look like jewels on the page. Tatiana's instructions and step by step photos are really clear and easy to follow. I can't wait to start my crewel Embroidery journey. -- Latona Sewell * Amazon *Absolutely stunning book, lots of advice, beautiful pictures showing closeup work. -- Claire Allen * Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction Stitches and techniques Creative stitching Crewel designs Stitch index

If you are looking for Christmas cross stitch projects with a twist and contemporary designs, I think this book would suit perfectly. -- Sally Wilkinson * The SEW Region Magazine - Book Threads *Table of ContentsThe embroideries 8 ADVENT FOLIAGE Adopt a fir tree 10 Be good 12 Those little extras 14 Liven up Christmas Eve 16 Read a Christmas story 18 Cutlery pouches for festive place settings 20 CHRISTMAS ANIMALS Create a fairytale atmosphere 22 Send Christmas cards 24 Stave off hunger pangs 26 Count the days 28 Choirs are singing 30 A cover for a festive photo album 32 FESTIVE FOLIAGE A time for giving 34 Secret Santa 36 Regional traditions 38 A candle in your window 40 Keep them going with a little bag of treats 42 Write a letter to Santa 44 A furoshiki gift wrap 46 AMAZING ALPHABETS Welcoming guests 48 Enchanting tales 50 Keep the secret 52 The elegant hellebore or Christmas Rose 54 The essential Christmas jumper 56 Personalised gift labels 58 Cross stitch patterns 60 Techniques and how to make up your embroidery projects 82 Stitches 84 Getting started 85 Equipment 86 Classic fabrics 86 Instructions for making up 88 Acknowledgements 96

The Crowood Press Ltd Goldwork Embroidery
Book SynopsisGoldwork must be the most dramatic of the embroidered arts. The smallest addition of metal thread to a piece of embroidery can lend immediate visual impact, and yet the technique can also be beautifully subtle. A design stitched in goldwork will be rich in texture, shine and sparkle, and metal threads can be combined beautifully with other techniques. Aimed at guiding you through each stitch and technique, and with tips for moving on to your own designs, this book is full of practical instruction. With its high level of detail and over 600 photographs, it will be a treasured companion, whether you are a novice or an experienced embroiderer.Trade ReviewI have patiently waited for this book based purely on the promise of something beautiful. And yes, I am delighted to say that it ticks every box. The front cover is enticing but inside it is beautifully laid out and is a very visually pleasing book. Eye watering images of goldwork materials are very useful for both beginner and the more experienced goldworker... and it should be on your bookshelf! * The Goldwork Guild magazine *
