Book SynopsisExperiment with stitch, fabric and thread to create your own unique textiles. This inventive book is a treasure trove of over 40 inspiring practical exercises, a rich and creative exploration of fabric and stitch, and a fascinating all-round read. Elizabeth Healey's approach to sewing is that it should be fun, and not like a chore or an exam we need to excel in. Her aim is to simply encourage you to pick up a needle and thread and get sewing! The exercises draw inspiration from around the world: create corded works of art inspired by Milton Glaser's iconic Bob Dylan poster; create bold embroidered African masks; layer up and cut away to create Mola applique; use bleach and fabric paint to create Aboriginal dreamtime lizards; create knotted works of art inspired by ancient Mayan counting systems; embroider varsity cross-stitch letters or try out decorative Japanese book binding. Alternatively, try a host of other techniques such as quilting, printing, dyeing, couching tumbled crockery, creating pleats and puckers and needlelace. Packed with stitch galleries and bursting with slow sewing ideas, the book also contains 'behind the stitches' features: illuminating insights into sewing movements such as Boro textiles, Gee's Bend quilting and Dorset buttons.Trade ReviewAt first glance I thought this book is not for me. How wrong could I be. Its exciting, informative and fun. It has a theme of humour throughout the book. It looks at traditional basic stitches and explores different ways of using them. It asks what is thread? The short answer is anything can be used as thread as long as the material you are sewing into has an open enough weave to accommodate it. If you are looking to take stitching to the next level but don’t know how to this is the book for you. It is full of ideas and tips. Using everyday objects as a source it explores ways of using them in stitch. This book is packed full of detail from the history behind some of the stitches to Aboriginal Culture. There is so much in this book it’s practical, informative full of fun and the photography is superb. A book that has something for everyone with page after page of ideas. -- Muriel Campbell, Board Chair * Embroiderers Guild *Received my copy on Friday, it contains a great range of techniques that I've never seen before. I mainly do cross stitch and make soft toys, but your book has opened my eyes to maybe trying new things .Im especially keen to try patchwork and dying and pleating. Book is very informative and I look forward to moving on to some new ventures ,thanks for giving me the chance . :) -- Mary Strickland * Customer Review *In this guide, crafter Healey explores embroidery supplies and techniques, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including vintage textiles, street art, textile arts from around the world, nature, and modern art. A variety of stitches and fabrics are used, and her exploration of non-Western embroidery, such as Japanese boro textiles, Indian shisha, and South Asian kantha, will introduce these traditional techniques to a broader audience. The projects serve as an excellent jumping-off point for creative stitchers; Healey’s willingness to stitch with just about anything will inspire embroiderers to see the potential in everyday materials. VERDICT Embroiderers are a natural audience for this guide; however, crafters interested in crazy quilting will also find some interesting ideas. * Library Journal USA *For an abundance of drool worthy creative sewing inspiration, look no further than Elizabeth Healey's STITCH, FABRIC & THREAD (Search Press 2017). This 160-page book has over 40 inspirational techniques to learn, from decorative stitches to raised textures like knots, trapunto, cords, pleats, and pinches, drawn threadwork, mola applique, and more. Comprehensive information on threads, colors, and fabrics rounds out the contents, and makes for an easy leap to your own embellished garment and accessory projects. But whether or not you've got an itch to embellish, the photos alone will make this book a treasured resource. - in the Must Haves section of Vogue Patterns. * Vogue Patterns (Aug/Sept 2017) *July 2017 Pretty Patches contributor Elizabeth Healey brings her passion for textiles to Stitch, Fabric & Thread an exploration of stitched work including over 400 practical exercises. The projects draw inspiration from around the world, from embroidered African Masks to Aboriginal dreamtime lizards and Japanese Bookbinding. * Pretty Patches *This new book by Elizabeth Healey headlines as ‘an inspirational guide for creative stitchers’ and is an experimental book for those – perhaps fairly new to stitching – who wish to develop and play with their creative ideas. The book is not strictly a project book but it does include templates for some of the ideas for you to have a go. The book’s aim is to allow you to develop your own ideas from the wealth of techniques mentioned in the book, with the focus on different stitch types, both hand and machine. It begins with a back-to-basics look at tools, threads and material types that you can choose for stitching. It really assumes limited knowledge and is a very comprehensive introduction before you start creating. Then it leads into different stitch-based sections, starting with straight stitches. The first four pages of the section are a beautifully photographed visual exploration of different straight stitch techniques to whet your appetite before it focuses on more detailed techniques and ideas such as pojagi patchwork, kantha and creative darning. The book continues in a similar format with well-illustrated sections on chain and blanket stitches, textural raised stitches, fabric manipulation and embellishments. As before there is a quick visual overview followed by more detailed ideas. The author explores stitch ideas from around the World and the book is an interesting read too! It finishes with a very useful visual dictionary of stitches at the rear of the book and templates (not all at full-size) for some of the ideas to kick-start your creativity. You will enjoy this book if you want to stitch your own designs, but get ‘stuck’ coming up with ways to achieve your ideas. It is packed full of inspiring images that will help set you off on your creative journey. - See more at: http://www.thesewingdirectory.co.uk/stitch-fabric-and-thread/#sthash.H5eAb2gw.dpuf * The Sewing Directory *Wow! What a truly inspirational book. As soon as I opened the front cover I fund my self-itching to get started on another project inspired by this book. Elizabeth Healey has done an amazing job of drawing together ideas and inspiration from all over the world. Each chapter is based on one type of Stitch and shows you how you can expand on that type to create wonderful works of embroidery and textile art. All in all this book is definitely worth buying as I believe it is one you will go back to time and time again, for both reference and inspiration! -- Sian Lawton * Customer Review *Yes, I know this is a papercraft blog – but the source of my inspiration is frequently needlecraft and this new title by Elizabeth Healey is an appreciation of many of the fabric manipulation techniques that kindle my creative fire. This lively new title covers many wonderful needlecraft specialities, including shisha mirror embroidery, Suffolk puffs, penny rugs, mola (reverse appliqué) and so much more. All interspersed with a dash of cultural and/or historical background and super how-to tips. This book provides exactly what is says on the tin, delivering on the promise of the title's strap line. The projects are delightful and the author successfully updates many techniques with time-saving tweaks (such as the cheat’s molas worked with felt cut-outs – no edges to turn under). The fact that many (probably all) creative endeavours are underpinned by mathematical principles strikes fear in the heart of many crafters – Elizabeth Healey proudly revels in this knowledge, and shares her wondrous discoveries. She says , “I was once told that sewing is basically applied mathematics. If maths was your most hated subject at school, don’t panic”. Another gem is citing that creating a seemingly random pattern is not as easy as it sounds. Yay. A weekend browse of this book could send your crafting off in splendid new directions. Would also make a fab Mother’s Day gift. http://thepapercraftpost.blogspot.co.uk/2017/03/stitch-fabric-thread-by-elizabeth.html * Papercraft Post *I bet that gorgeous cover grabbed your attention. It gives you some idea of the inspiration this book provides through practical exercises. The many techniques explored in this book are quilting, shisha embroidery, printing, mola, dyeing, couching, Japanese bookbinding and needlelace. You'll discover stitch galleries and features on sewing movements such as Boro textiles. Subtitled 'An Inspirational Guide For Creative Stitchers' this book includes : Before The Stitches - all about research and preparation; Running Stitches explores straight stitches; Chain and Blanket Stitches is another exploration of stitches and includes creating penny mats, one of my favourite projects in the book as well as stitched memories; Raised Stitches has some nice experimental ideas including Dorset buttons and More Than Stitches including Shibori techniques and mola and gathered circles and stitches at the very back of the book. The book is a basic introduction to stitch with projects that you can follow. Since it covers a lot of things, it should have broad appeal. With over 40 exercises there is bound to be many things you will love. I felt that even if you encountered nothing new, you would still find value in the projects and expression in this creative book. So much to love for stitchers here. * yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Elizabeth Healey's book is an inspirational book indeed. As an embroiderer who takes a very playful approach to her craft, looking at spontaneity and improvisation rather than following patterns or rules, what we have in Stitch, Fabric and Thread is a book full of new and exciting approaches within a framework of what most people would feel comfortable with. Particular stitches are explored but go off on tangents. So with the running stitch, you look at the basics, then at a gallery of over 25 different ways of using straight stitch in your work. You then move onto a series of wildly different exercises or projects, all using running stitch. Chain and blanket stitches and later textured stitches are approached in the same way and you are moved far away from a pedestrian approach but taken on a roller coaster ride of stitching, stories and 'Behind the Stitches' which look more deeply into subjects ranging from Dorset Buttons to Boro Textiles or Mola Reverse Appliqué. It is an exciting book that feels like someone with a brain full of stitches and ideas has exploded onto the page. It is taken beyond the traditional book of stitches and goes one step further, moving from the stitch to all the different ways you could use it and making it a treasure trove of ideas. From making simple stitched forms to mini art forms, you have a really good book about making stitching fun and thinking outside the box. * Workshop on the web *Elizabeth takes a slightly unconventional approach with her first book by presenting a range of creative and inspirational projects based around stitch types. The projects are of a somewhat random nature, but explanations are given for each, allowing flexibility for the reader to expand the idea in her own way. A charming ideas book perfect for anyone wishing to experiment with fabric and thread. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *I am an artist and do a bit of sewing in some of my artwork. I found this book inspiring. Lots of beautiful photos throughout the book. It is so creative and is definitely a book I will pick up time and again -- Heather Graham * Customer Review *The title of this book says it all - Stitch Fabric & Thread 'An Inspirational Guide for Creative Stitchers' - and it certainly is just that 'inspirational'. This lovely book is packed full of techniques, ideas and instruction for the avid stitcher that are beautifully illustrated and clearly explained - including embroidery, quilting, fabric painting, dyeing and much much more. It introduced me to many techniques that I had never seen before, and I will look to this book for a wealth of ideas and for practical stitch reference for many years to come -- Gaynor Lewis * Customer Review *We love this book, packed with stitch galleries and bursting with slow sewing ideas, the book also contains 'behind the scenes stitches' features; illuminating insights into sewing movements such as Boro textiles, Gee's bend quilting and Dorset Buttons. It is an absolute inspiration! * Hot Brands Cool Places *You only have to look at the cover of this book to feel inspired. With 160 pages of well illustrated information that can be difficult to find elsewhere this book is a must for every textile student, sewing enthusiast and mixed media artist. The book contained a wide range of textile techniques that have been explained well along with projects to try. Also included are answers to questions about how things work....for example...how a sewing machine works. This book contains more than the title suggests and is a joy to own. -- Gaye Parker * Customer Review *An excellent, inspiring book that gives lots of photos to easily explain ideas , that covers lots of techniques. I felt like a child in a sweet shop, that got me straight in my craft room trying ideas out . I can recommend the book to anyone that is trying and playing with new inspiring techniques. -- Karen Meakin * Customer Review *The illustrations in this book are really good and there are clear instructions to help you create some wonderful stitching projects. The layout of the book makes you want to try all the different techniques and overall, it's given me some new inspiration. -- Joanne Crosby * Customer Review *This is a lovely inspiring sewing book to relax with and absorb ideas from. The author has a particular style emulating nature and using soft subtle natural shades and ethnic inspiration, using traditional stitching techniques which becomes apparent throughout the book. It all makes for a very soothing and restful style which is nevertheless exciting and innovative. As well as lots of tips and techniques there are specific projects to try with step by step guidelines and templates. Techniques covered which I had not come across before include Boro stitching and Mola applique and there are some great ideas for making and using Dorset buttons which I've already begun and find them fascinating. A must read for imaginative stitchers and would be textile artists, to add to your sewing library and gain insight and creativity from. -- Jan Lambert * Customer Review *I so wish there were a higher star rating that I could give as this book is PHENOMENAL! Elizabeth Healey has absolutely jam-packed this book with ideas, exercises, prompts and knowledge for stitching in a range of contexts and inspirations. You can see from the contents page at how detailed this book is, but it isn’t ever overwhelming! The book’s layout and the structure have been expertly thought through and crafted so that you, as the reader and maker, are taken on a textile journey. Even the subtle page decorations are inspirational as you go through the book… Before starting the stitches, Elizabeth talks about the importance of preparation in terms of tools, sketchbooks and recording, threads, fabrics, colour, image inspiration and more. What I really love is how Elizabeth really brings it back to basics in exploring these factors. For example, Elizabeth talks about the different fabrics in such detail (their weave, their formation, their weight) and, even if you thought you know lots about fabric, it is so informative and inspiring. I adore how Elizabeth also encourages you to think ethically about your fabrics too with a specific section on ethical textiles and textile recycling. Once the preparation is covered, Elizabeth then begins to explore the stitches with the first section being based on straight stitches. Now, don’t be fooled! Straight stitches are so incredibly versatile, and Elizabeth demonstrates this beautifully with a phenomenal 26 visual prompts for using straight stitch including (but not limited to) chicken scratch, seed stitch, kantha, boro, sashiko and much, much more. I love how each of the 26 prompts is presented visually at the start of that section so that you can see exactly what the stitch idea is. Then the in-action prompts begin and the layout for each activity/prompt is exquisite! The technique/stitch is explained alongside the materials, the instructions and stunning photography. What is also incredibly clever is that a lot of the prompts also contain an ‘elsewhere’ section which is almost like an extension of that prompt and encourages you to look further into that specific technique/inspiration. Continuing this inspirational and flawless layout, the second section explores ‘chain and blanket stitches’ (shisha, felt, mail art, stitching on knit and more), the third section explores ‘raised stitches’ (embellishing prints, scattered french knots, couching) alongside pattern repeats, natural dyes, ink and bleach experimentation with the fourth and final section exploring ‘more than stitches’ (shibori techniques, texture, rag books, applique, drawn thread and more). If you’re new to stitching, or just want a refresher on stitching techniques, then there is also a detailed and easy-to-follow section on the range of stitches used towards the end of the book. I genuinely don’t know how to rave about this book any higher. If there is only one book that you buy this year then I would really, really recommend that you choose this one as it is phenomenal from start to finish! To see more reviews like this visit http://www.crochetaddictuk.com/ * Crochet Addict UK *December 2014 Defined here as “a way of altering a surface with stitches,” embroidery in all its richness and variety is presented in this alphabetically arranged guide to a wealth of stitches available to the needle crafter. Thread, needles, and fabric are the triumvirate of necessary materials required for all embroidery projects, and an introductory discussion of those factors is joined by commentary on transferring design onto fabric. Once these important preliminary issues are cleared, then the meat of the book is offered: the stitches themselves, from simple to complicated. The thing to realize about this book is that every stitch is afforded clear and detailed textual directions augmented by exquisitely clear photographs. * Booklist *March 2015 This is a timeless and useful guide to embroidery stitches. It offers step-by-step instructions to an A-Z of stitches with clear, easy to follow photos. Find out how to create the perfect bullion knot and much more with professional techniques. It includes all the stitches you need for any stitch project. The only downside is that you might have this book as it was previously published in Australia in 2000 by Country Bumpkin. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *March 2015 I love the simplicity of cross stitch, you make a row of diagonal lines going one way and then you go back the other way. It’s easy to get into a rhythm because it’s all the same, over and over. But embroidery is a whole different ballgame, there are tons of stitches. Apparently, far more than I even realized because A-Z of Embroidery Stitches* is full of ones I’ve never even heard of! I had a hard time even getting a photo of the contents pages listing all the stitches, there are so many! I counted and there are 84 different stitches listed, and that doesn’t even count all the variations like the 8 types of blanket stitches. I tried my hand at a couple of the stitches in the book and I found the photos all really easy to follow and the directions to be clear. Besides a handful of basic stitches, I always need to reference either YouTube videos or an online guide when doing embroidery stitches. I really appreciated the little diagram that appears on the top showing all the different steps at once. It was really helpful for me to get an idea of the progression of the stitches. In addition to all the different stitches there is also a great general overview on getting started with embroidery – transferring designs, choosing needles, finishing your embroideries… There are also tips for left handed embroiderers and a lot of great information about thread painting and working with ribbon. The cover of the book advertises it as “a complete manual for the beginner through to the advanced embroiderer” and I would definitely agree. This is a truly comprehensive stitch guide and I was really impressed with how easy to follow the photos and directions are. I was also excited to see that there are a bunch of other “A to Z” embroidery books either out or that will be released this year – whitework, needlepoint, threadpainting, ribbon embroidery, stumpwork. I’m really excited to check out some of these, especially if they are as detailed as this one! Book SynopsisThe Right-Handed Embroiderer's Companion will help you to learn and master over 170 embroidery stitches including their variations.Trade ReviewNov 10 Following the success of The Left Handed Embroiderer's Companion, Yvette Stanton has produced an edition for right-handers. It is a comprehensive dictionary of counted and non-counted stitches with clear, step-by-step instructions and diagrams. There are stitches you have heard of and maybe some that you haven't, all waiting for you to try your hand at. In keeping with the previous edition, each stitch does contain a snippet of advice at the e4nd of each set of diagrams to help left-handers which is useful should you be teaching a friend or relative. The Right Handed Embroiderer's Companion is an absolute gem and a must for anyone with a love of stitching. * NEW STITCHES *Dec 10/Jan 11 There's no shortage of stitch dictionaries, but if you want to master new stitches and also explore variations of the basic stitches, this book is ideal. The step-by-step diagrams are very clear and easy to follow, and the beautiful worked samples will encourage you to distort and manipulate the stitches and use them creatively and experimentally in your own embroidery. There are instructions for more than 170 different stitches (including surface stitches, needlepoint stitches and counted thread stitches), with some unusual ones, such as Chinese knot, pagoda chevron stitch and Ceylon stitch. Following on from the success of her previously published Left-Handed Embroiderer's Companion (Yvette Stanton is a left-handed embroiderer), this book aims to redress the balance for the right-handers who were apparently feeling left out – and developing a condition called left-handed envy (I was one of them)! * Stitch *Oct 10 The Right-Handed Embroiderer's Companion by Yvette Stanton is the sequel to the left handed version. I am right handed but have a copy of the left hand edition which I have previously reviewed here. These books are exceptionally clear in their directions and stitches are shown worked in all sorts of different ways and in sample to really give inspiration for their use. I am finding this book invaluable in my City and Guilds stitch samples. I have already got a few stitch dictionaries in my library, including the classics, but this is my first choice now as it is so bright and light and well indexed. I would highly recommend this for other students and teachers. Both the right and left handed embroiderer's companions are superb. * Jennyflowerblue.blogspot.com *Nov 10 Following the success of The Left Handed Embroiderer's Companion, Yvette Stanton has produced an edition for right-handers. With clear instructions accompanied by diagrams showing you what to do, it is very hard to go wrong. Examples of each stitch will inspire you to use the stitches creatively and experimentally in your embroidery and you will learn how easy it is to master new stitches. This book provides a great source of ideas for textural embellishment so, whether you are a quilter or an embroiderer, there is sure to be something in this resource of value. * Fabrications *Winter 2010 This was much more than a stitch dictionary for me. I have spent hours leafing through it just for the pleasure of it. The precision of the instructions is a joy to follow and with hints and tips that are included you can make yours look the same. Not only is it easy to master new stitches but with the inclusion of variations for most of the stitches it is an inspiration as well as delivering information on how the stitches can be used. * West Country Embroiderers *Table of ContentsYou will discover: How easy it is to learn and master new stitches How to work surface stitches, needlepoint stitches and counted thread stitches How the stitches and their variations should look, and how you can make yours look the same How different stitches can be used creatively in your embroidery with colour, texture and different types of thread

This new, redesigned edition includes the internationally renowned embroiderer Jan Eaton’s revisions to the original text, and includes a preface by famed embroiderer Mary Corbet.Trade ReviewI loved this little book from the minute I opened to the first page. From the introduction to all your sewing needs to simplicity of the cross stitch, from the filling stitches to the cut and drawn - a fabulous introduction and detailed explanation of how to achieve. For those starting out with needlework I think this book would serve as a wonderful guide and to those more accomplished a nice reminder. My daughter is studying for a degree in product design and textiles a subject she has no real familiarity with but using this as a guide she has wowed her tutor with an amazingly diverse sampler far more complex than was expected so 10/10 for beginners. Now where's my hoop...? -- Samantha Bolter * Customer review *A beautifully produced book with lovely illustrations and clear instructions, and nice to have stitches sorted into categories. This classic reference book has achieved near-legendary status since it was first published in 1934, owing to its clear instructions and huge library of stitches. It includes fully illustrated instructions for over 400 embroidery stitches, ranging from simple border and outline stitches, to filling stitches, canvas stitches and pulled fabric stitches. Scattered throughout are dozens of inspirational embroideries to show the stitches in action. Ideal for both those starting out with needlework and those more accomplished embroiderers who need inspiration for different stitches and techniques, this new, redesigned edition includes the internationally-renowned embroiderer Jan Eaton's revisions to the original text, and includes a preface by famed embroiderer Mary Corbet. * Stitch Magazine, Feb/March 2019 *This is a book that fulfils every need for embroiderers. It includes stitch techniques, both written and visual, which makes it a brilliant teaching guide for beginners as well as acting as a reminder for those more advanced. Mary Thomas’s Dictionary of Embroidery Stitches was first published in 1934, and Jan Eaton has revised and updated it perfectly. It is fabulous that Search Press has republished this book, as it gives us the opportunity to learn from a classic embroiderer such as Mary Thomas as well as gaining more modern skills from Jan Eaton. I love the abundance of colour, beads and decorative stitches that fill the pages. It is both artistic and inspirational. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *This is a revised and updated (by Jan Eaton) edition of the classic guide, originally published in 1934. Mary’s book was the original embroidery dictionary, the one that inspired the many to follow. How does it stand up today? Like every book that is deservedly called a “classic” it stands up very well. There are over 400 stitches in here, all with clear, easy to follow diagrams and in many cases, photographs of a worked sample. Each stitch also has a short description which contains information about its origin if known, use, tips for working and anything else of note. Stitches are grouped according to their use in a design, so there are chapters for isolated stitches, borders, outlines, various types of fillings, different types of stitch for canvas, pulled fabric, cut-work and more. This is how I always look for stitches when I am designing a project so appreciate this way of organising. At the beginning there is a very short section showing types of thread and fabric available for hand embroidery plus a few tips for beginners. At the back is an index, and throughout the book quite a few examples of finished work. It does not matter what level embroiderer you are, a book like this is invaluable and I wouldn’t be without a stitch dictionary. I have quite a few, but this is probably the best and also inspired most of the others. Recommended for anybody who wants to learn (or is already adept at) embroidery. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *This is a must have book whether you are new to embroidery or an experienced embroidery. It has dedicated chapters on types of Stitches: filling Stitches, pulled thread Stitches etc. Many stitches will be familiar to an embroiderer but alongside that this book is filled with little known Stitches with excellent illustrations and instructions opening up new possibilities for creativity. Beautifully made in lovely, soft colours, the birds are filled with toy stuffing and embellished with folk-style surface embroidery in different-coloured threads. The birds all have optional ribbon hangers for display.Trade ReviewWhether or not you make your own felt or just enjoy stitching, the twenty different birds featured in this book might appeal as characters with a folksy feel. In designing the projects the author, Corinne Lapierre, has combined her love of felt, folk embroidery and birds. The first part of the book lists the necessary materials, tools and equipment required before moving on to the basic techniques for making the birds. This is followed by instructions for the embroidery stitches used in each project. Throughout this section the author adds a series of tips to help the maker work through the different techniques smoothly. The second part of the book concentrates on the different bird projects. For each bird there is a list of the materials and equipment required followed by step-by-step instructions for making. Cutting templates are also provided at the end of the book. The author points out that the birds themselves are relatively easy to make, but their characters are defined by the colours and embroidery stitches used. The information provided throughout the book is clearly presented and well illustrated. Each fun project should be achievable for anyone with a basic knowledge of stitch and embroidery. * Journal of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers *This book is a delight from cover to cover. It starts by explaining what items are needed to complete the projects and then goes on, in simple terms, to talk about techniques from drawing templates to cutting out the felt, to embellishing with hand sewn embroidery. These stitches are clearly explained at the beginning of the book in easy to follow instructions and photos. There are even simple instructions for making birds feet. Once this has all be laid out for you, there follows 20 easy to make colourful birds which are so pleasing to the eye! I particularly like the use of sequins on the pigeon to add texture and shimmer. All of the templates needed to complete the projects are at the back of the book, these can easily be copied or traced as they are so simple. All in all, a lovely book! -- Shirley Marriott * Customer review *A great little book. Every process is clearly described, with beautiful photos and diagrams. Perfect for experienced and beginners alike. The patterns are clear and easy to follow. The birds are beautiful - I love the robin - that will be the one I will make first. All of the templates to make each bird, are at the back of the book, and they can be easily traced, or scanned so that you don't need to damage such a lovely book. -- Sue Rowland * Customer review *What a superb book, the techniques section is very informative and will certainly be a great help for me, a novice embroiderer. The illustrations are bright and clear, fantastic photography. At the back of the book you will find the templates for each of the projects. I can’t wait to make my first bird, which I think will be the peacock. -- Sandra Dennis * Customer review *Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a beautiful book full of lovely birds to create. I would recommend to anyone who wanted to have a go. The clear photographs and instructions are just so easy to follow. This book would be a lovely present and you could give the person a few felt squares, some thread and let them start creating right away!! Love it!! -- Moyra Blayney * Customer review *Received my book today the projects are lovely and more importantly achievable. I love the fact that the project is all hand stitched. My nieces and I have already picked which ones we are going to do and are off out to get our materials this afternoon. These projects are going to provide many happy sewing hours for us and some great little gifts which we plan to give away as random acts of kindness. Search Press have produced yet another fab book. -- Wendy Burt * Customer review *The square format of this beautiful book makes it feel different and inside it is filled with the enthusiasm of the author for her felt birds. There are twenty very attractive birds to make. Each of them a pleasing mix of well chosen felt colours and embroidery stitches. Techniques and stitches used are illustrated with excellent photographs and easy to follow instructions. The hand drawn illustrations add a personal touch to the book. Full size templates are included for each project. This is a book to make you smile. A clever use of simple embroidery stitches such as fly, seed, chain and French knots are used effectively to give each of the birds their individual characters. I very much liked the proud peacock, a pheasant with attitude and the trendy flamingo. Making felt birds is not my usual thing but I could be tempted by my favourite, the hen, whose comforting shape and embroidery really epitomises 'folk art'. -- Carol Winter * SEW Region Magazine (June 2019) * Time for a book review! And today’s book review is all about fun! Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a new book packed full of – you guessed it! – folk embroidered felt birds! And they’re delightful! If you love birds (I love birds) and you like the look of folk embroidery, and you like working with felt to make three dimensional objects, then you need to add this book to your library. It’s one of those books that just makes me happy when I flip through it. Folk Embroidered Felt Birds is a project book. The projects are small, three-dimensional birds made from felt, stuffed and embroidered. The cover is the seller for me. I know, I know! Don’t judge a book by its cover and all that. But really – a flamingo AND a puffin? With those legs? And those feet? I see this book being perfect for those who like to make. The birds are perfect for whimsical ornaments and delightful gifts. What a great way to pass on a bit of cheer to a friend on a birthday – or out of the blue for no reason at all! The book features a fairly vast array of projects focusing on twenty different types of birds, which are all recognizable. From the humble robin, to the pheasant and flamingo, the parrot, the toucan, the gentle dove and the flamboyant peacock, the gangly stork, the majestic swan, the hen, the goose, the owl, the gull and goldfinch – they’re all there, waiting for you to bring them to life! Like any good project book, Folk Embroidered Felt Birds begins with a section on materials. There’s nothing too out of the ordinary here – felt (the author recommends a wool / viscose blend); embroidery floss; wire (for legs), filling, ribbon, sequins, wire tape, and other very regular stuff. From materials and tools, we move into techniques: transferring the template designs to felt, to sewing, filling, stuffing, making legs and feet, appliqué, and all the techniques necessary for creating a three dimensional bird. Every aspect of instruction is presented in very clear, step-by-step photos with text. The text is succinct quite minimal; it’s very precise and easy to follow. And of course, there’s a selection of embroidery stitch instructions with step-by-step photos as well. And then – the projects! For each project, you’ll find a list of tools and supplies required to make the bird, along with a list of the templates to use from the back of the book. The templates in the back of the book are clean line drawings of the different bird parts, that you trace and cut out for patterns. Along with the materials and templates lists, you’ll find a page of instructions that take you through constructing the bird, referring to the techniques covered at the beginning of the book. The projects in the book are all darling! And the instructions are excellent and very accessible. If you enjoy making things and you like birds, folk art, and felt, this book would be right up your alley! I’m pretty sure it will put a smile on your face! See the full review here. -- Mary Corbet * Mary Corbet's Needle n Thread *Anybody who cut their sewing teeth on felt will enjoy this book; inside it are twenty folk art style birds to make up and display. If, like me you have loved working with felt since early childhood you will probably want to dive in but if you are new to it read the first section of the book before picking up a needle. This will tell you what type of felt to use (a mix of viscose and wool sold on the author’s website) and how to work with it, do several embroidery stitches, sew up the patterns and make the wire legs and feet. When you have the basics sorted you can progress to the patterns. Each one features a page-sized photograph of the bird in a suitable setting, a list of materials, tools and templates and written instructions. These usually come with a simple diagram or two, but unless you are a total beginner you won’t have problems making them up. The first section lays it all out very clearly with staged photographs, including some excellent ones for the embroidery stitches which are so good I wish there was a whole book of them! I think the family pet could learn how to embroider with these…the birds themselves are mostly those familiar to UK residents including robin, blue tit, heron, swan, peacock, hen, goose, herring gull and owl. A few exotics are included such as a flamingo, toucan and parrot, and many are suitable for certain occasions such as Christmas (robin and dove) Easter (hen and goose) and new baby (stork). At the front is a handy double page spread showing all the birds for easy choice, and at the back are all the templates life size. No sewing machine is required for these projects, and all are ideal quick makes for somebody who knows a few basics but is not confident enough for larger projects including older children (be careful with that wire though). Anybody in more need of something easier can go to the author’s website and buy kits of some of these birds as well as lots of other creatures and Christmas decorations. Bundles of wool/viscose felt and kits are available from www.corinnelapierre.com -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *Tweet, Tweet You're guranteed to love Corinne Lapierre's latest book, Folk Embroidered Felt Birds! Alison 'paints' her threads on to hand-coloured backgrounds, blending her stitches and achieving stunning results. There are stunning step-by-step projects so that the reader can put into practise his or her newly-acquired skills.Trade ReviewRarely do I find any book which includes Silk Painting, but Alison Holt uses silk painting as a background for her exquisite machine embroidery! This book is a delight for the eyes and could tempt anyone to try this gorgeous art. Equipment is covered concisely and simply, including silk paints, clear outliner and habotai 8. Followed by sections on taking source photographs, how to capture movement, cropping, combining photographs, sense of scale and which areas to paint or stitch. The section of colour is really informative. The paragraph on understanding colour is probably something we're all aware of but a nudge to the mind increases our execution when painting. I love the 'Painting Without Resist' example, which is fully explained in eight photographs and includes lots of tips. This is followed by 'Lacework Trees' which is so beautiful. However, this is just one example of many; the seascapes are wonderful, and although machine embroidered, would give lots of tips and inspiration to painters. The wonders of this book are too numerous to mention and defy description. Perfectly written and illustrated, with gardens, woodland and seascapes. As I love trees and seascapes, this is a book I would love to own. -- Margaret Dunning * International Journal of the Guild of Silk Painters *This is a must-have instructional inspirational book for anyone interested in free-motion embroidery. The subtitle is painting the natural world with needle and thread. Well the natural scenes are beautiful and really true to nature. In my opinion it is also suitable for hand embroidery projects. -- Henriet Simons * Amazon *What a fantastic book. I didn't know that you could create such beautiful art just using a standard machine. Very informative and with step-by-step instructions, guiding you through each piece. -- Debbie Prince * Amazon *No, that picture on the cover isn't a painting - its actually an amazing piece of embroidery! Whether you fancy illustrating blooming gardens, tranquil woodlands or romantic seascapes, this book covers everything you need to recreate beautiful scenery using just two simple stitches. It even includes a showcase of Alison Holt's most exquisite machine embroideries. * Sew Magazine *Whatever type of sewing machine you have you can use it to make beautiful pictures. Just thread up your needle and put some fabric into a hoop and off you go. Well, there is a bit more to it than that which is where this book comes in… If you have the four books by this author on free-motion machine embroidery covering landscapes, seascapes, flowers and woodlands you won’t need this book as you already have it. If not, this new compendium volume contains all four in a revised format. I always love a craft with infinite possibilities but a minimum outlay of funds and which has scope for plenty of recycling and using up oddments, and this is one of them. A simple swing needle machine capable of straight lines and zigzag stitch is the main item, backed up with a supply of threads, plain cloth, paints, embroidery hoop and inspiration. The first part of the book tells you what you need to buy and how to prepare the cloth, use photographs, plan you work, choose threads and background colours and stitch. The rest of the book contains chapters on the themes contained in the earlier books so you can learn how to stitch flowers and foliage, create bosky woods, show the sea in all its moods and produce various landscape types. These pictures are beautiful, depicting very British scenes in the main (or at least northern temperate) and there are numerous exercises to try and several larger projects to work through. The projects all have plenty of staged photographs and this book is aimed at those who are new to this craft, while containing much material of use to those wanting to perfect their skills. Throughout are many of the author’s many pictures with captions explaining various points and lots of tips for better work. An excellent guide to free-motion machine embroidery that teaches most of what you need to know. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *This exciting title showcases textile artist Alison Holt's exquisite machine embroideries, whilst teaching the reader to 'paint' their surroundings using two simple stitches. This book is just amazing and very pleasing to the eye. As a creative person, but not a good one I might add, I envy her talent. The projects in this book can not only be sewn, but also painted, so depending on your own preference, you can have a go at creating and even designing something with a stunning effect. You can also add organza, beads and ribbon to give definition to your chosen piece. The landscapes and seascapes are full of life, the colours vibrant and the subject is beautiful. The 10 projects are accompanied with instructions, techniques and ideas how to create the perfect picture. Of course for most of us this will take some practice, but I love this book, and even if I can achieve just one beautiful flower or a frothy wave then I would be happy. -- Tracy Shephard * Amazon *Issue March/April Alison Holt has been working with creative machine embroidery since the 1970s, 'painting' with thread in her unique style. Her forte is capturing natural landscapes in stitch - from coast to countryside - in realistic detail. Using two simple stitches (straight, zig-zag), Holt explains how to stitch portraits of your surroundings using free-motion embroidery, drawing on other techniques such as silk painting, colour mixing and working with photographs. She breaks the process down into clear stages, illustrated with helpful photographs and examples. An excellent investment for those interested in mastering pictorial machine embroidery. * Embroidery *Alison Holt is a graduate of Goldsmiths in London, where she studied fine art, textiles, and embroidery. She chose freehand machine embroidery as her medium and “started to explore her love of gardens and the countryside”. Alison has perfected the reproduction of nature to the point that her embroideries seem like photographs or paintings, until you look closer and realise the added layer of texture and dimension that the stitches provide. The technique she has developed to such success over the decades for her commissions, courses, lectures, workshops, and books also incorporates silk painting. “More textured areas, such as rough seas and windblown grasses, lend themselves to stitch, whereas smooth areas, such as distant sea and sky, are better represented by silk painting.” But you don’t have to be good at sketching or painting to give machine embroidered art a go. “Machine embroidery has a life of its own and some wonderful effects can be achieved without particular drawing skills.” The book shows you how to transfer a design to fabric, as well as how to use silk paints if you want to approach your work from that angle. In Machine Embroidered Art, Alison takes readers through each of the steps required to stitch a scene of natural beauty. She starts with a rundown of the materials and equipment you’ll need, most importantly a sewing machine – any machine will do, although one with the ability to do zigzag stitches is recommended. Threads, supplies for silk painting and a list of “other equipment” are given in detail, setting you up for early success. Alison works from photographs and always has a camera handy to shoot inspiring scenes. She then uses these and any sketches she may have done to create a design. She takes readers through the art basics of composition, balance, contrast, movement and more in the planning chapter, before moving on to light. Machine Embroidered Art is comprehensive in showing how Alison creates her works of textile art, and how you can do the same. Her skill and mastery of a sewing machine are evident. But it’s the pages and pages of incredibly lifelike landscapes and natural scenes that make it an inspiring read. Book SynopsisThe Royal School of Needlework teaches hand embroidery to the highest standard, developing techniques in new and innovative ways. Written by RSN apprentice and tutor Kate Sinton, this book contains an extensive guide to stitches and techniques, as well as guidance on the materials and equipment you need; how to design your own stumpwork embroidery; framing up; and positioning and transferring your design. Each stitch is clearly illustrated with step-by-step photography, along with expert instruction on how to form the stitch and use it in your needlework. With an introduction to the RSN and a brief history of stumpwork, together with numerous traditional and contemporary examples, this book provides an essential guide to this classic form of embroidery. Trade ReviewBeautiful artworks. Well written and illustrated. Plenty of information on what is needed to begin the art of stumpwork and how to do the stitches. Look forward to trying this method to improve my stitching skills. -- Sara Hawkins * Amazon *I have never attempted stumpwork, so receiving this book, I was reading it as a complete beginner, although I have experience in other areas of sewing. The book takes you right through everything about stumpwork, from the history right through to materials required, techniques and different stitches used. Every technique has colour pictures of each step, making it so easy to follow. Lots of good ideas for sewing your own pictures, or you could make up your own quite easily, following the book's very well written instructions for stitches and techniques. A fabulous book to have on the craft bookshelf as reference material. -- C. Owen * Amazon *Clearly written with easy to follow pictures and easy to understand, just ordered threads and looking forward to starting a project when they arrive! -- Libby O'Toole * Amazon *As an inexperienced embroiderer I hoped this book would expand my knowledge and I wasn’t disappointed. This is a 2021 reprint of a 2011 original and it’s bright and colourful presentation is engaging and informative. The initial 30 or so pages talk you through the history of the RSN, Stumpwork and the tools recommended to achieve this technique. Each of the following pages are clearly set out introducing each stitch with a text description, followed by step-by-step instructions with clear colour photographs walking you through the creation of each stitch. Personally, I would like to have the option for a spiral bound issue so that it lays flat for ease of use – however, this can easily be overcome by the use of a book stand. Whilst the book does not contain specific projects to follow and recreate, it would be possible to use this stitch guide to create a finished piece of work. I feel confident that I could use this book to begin my journey into Stumpwork. Subsquently, I have also been recommended this book by a more experienced embroiderer friend who already owns a copy, so I am confident this would be a suitable reference guide for all levels. -- Helen Todd * Amazon *This book is larger than I expected having seen previous editions of this book series before, but this reformatted version of the 2011 original has been made larger (A4) and thus much easier to read and use. It’s absolutely full of step-by-step pictures and instructions to show you how to do very basic stitches all the way up to much more developed pieces incorporating multiple different stumpwork techniques. The instructions are clearly worded and pictured in detail so that you can easily follow along. The designs are very wide-ranging in content and therefore there will be something that everyone will like. I particularly like the leaves on the cover and that technique is used again on a piece within the book to great effect. I was very surprised to see just how many different techniques were included from wired work and applique to numerous flat and raised surface stitches which can create texture in your work and a number of techniques I’ve never heard of. It really is packed with information, but it’ll be a fantastic resource to keep coming back to over time as my embroidery progresses and changes. Ultimately, it’s a very useful book packed with information, ideas and great places to get started with stumpwork or carry on if you’ve previously had a go. I’d definitely recommend it! Book SynopsisDiscover the art of kogin, a style of traditional Japanese sashiko embroidery with modern appeal. Historically, kogin was used as a pattern darning technique to reinforce threadbare fabric and add warmth to the clothing worn by farmers in the villages of northern Japan. With dozens of beautiful and simple geometric patterns, kogin embroidery offers fresh inspiration and authentic technique to proponents of the decorative mending movement. Colourful photos offer step-by-step instruction for learning this simple counted thread embroidery technique. Beginners will discover how to prepare the thread and fabric, how to read kogin charts, and how to make the basic straight stitches that comprise kogin motifs. Once you’ve mastered the basics, try your hand at one of the 25 adorable and easy projects included in the book. Featuring bright and modern colour schemes, these accessories are designed for contemporary life. You’ll find an assortment of pretty brooches, barrettes and hair ties, pouches and coin purses, framed samplers, pincushions, and ornaments, plus potholders, coasters, and place mats for the home. Once you start stitching, we guarantee you won’t be able to stop!Trade ReviewAn interesting read that teaches you how to start this style of embroidery and gives some sweet little projects to get you started. Overall a great book for beginners with clear instructions and diagrams. -- Jessica Irene Morgan * Amazon *I had never heard of Kogin until I came across this book. Although this is an ancient technique the designs included in the book are bright, modern and stylish. It starts with a gallery of the items you can make and then you can skip to that section of the book, and they appear to get more complex as you go along. I am loving the button bobbles, I am thinking of making some to add to some upholstery in my bedroom, anyway I digress... The getting started section easily breaks down the tools and materials and eases you into starting wonderfully. Clear photos with concise text, I think this is perfect for a true beginner to embroidery. I think if you are familiar with cross stitch this could be a natural progression as you will be used to evenweave and linen fabrics. The charts look clear and easy to follow and the construction instructions are also concise and efficient. I do like how this book is simple and straight to the point, it would be welcoming to a beginner as it is a very user friendly book. I would have liked to learn a little more about the origins of this technique but that could be the geek in me. -- Sarah Gage * Amazon *This is a great guide to a fresh and adaptable embroidery style that is suitable for beginners and established crafters alike. Based on traditional Japanese motifs, Sashiko embroidery can take on the look of Japanese, Scandinavian, European contemporary or many other decor trends, and this book gives examples of how you can incorporate that with your choice of colour or embellishment placement. The book starts with beautifully photographed projects, and all of them are small and simple - less intimidating than many other embroidery project books! The book then goes in to materials and techniques, and as you would expect from a Search Press book there are lots of clear photographs and diagrams to help explain everything. The book finishes with diagrams, charts and explanations of how to create the projects in the front of the book, and these would be easily adaptable to other things - I plan on using some of the charts to add an extra something to some face masks I have. -- Natalia Forrest * Amazon *I am fascinated by Sashiko embroidery and pattern darning in general so this book is ideal as it develops both those ideas. There are nearly 40 small projects to work through involving a variety of finished objects. Most of these are really small, like buttons and brooches, but there are also more involved projects like purses and a handbag. The projects give no indication of time required or skill level but the very clear pictures give an indication of the complexity involved. All the projects are clearly photographed at the front of the book and the instructions to make these projects are in a separate section at the back of the book. In between these two sections there is information on the tools and materials needed to produce the items included in the book. Each project also clearly states what is needed to make that item. As an introduction to an embroidery technique I thought this was well thought out with some very interesting projects that wouldn't take too long to finish and would help you develop your skills and interest level in this type of work. If you like working small projects this is a book I would recommend. -- Chris Jones * Amazon *Kogin is a style of Japanese sashiko embroidery with a geometric appearance. Simple and timeless, its clean lines and basic elegance is sure to appeal to modern tastes. You can use it to adorn so many things too, from tiny pins to pictures. It doesn’t take long to learn this straightforward but attractive type of embroidery, and there are plenty of smaller projects here that make up quickly. A lot of them are also of practical rather than decorative use, so you can make attractive buttons, hair ties, Christmas decorations, purses, bags and pincushions. Like all the books I have seen that originated in Japan this one follows a particular layout. At the front are photographs of all the projects, followed by the instructions and patterns. This means you get to whet your appetite by looking at many pages of colourful photographs. There is a short list of tools and materials, then a useful guide on how to prepare the thread and fabric, read the charts, work the stitches and get the tension right. The projects start simply with the smallest projects such as pins and hair ties, and progress through to the larger, more complex pieces. You don’t need to be an experienced embroiderer to tackle kogin work but some knowledge of making up projects and doing things like working with button kits, purse frames and zippers is a good idea. This is a lovely book suitable for anybody with a bit of stitching experience. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *This book is aimed at all kinds of expertise levels from beginners to long term kogin enthusiasts. I think there would be inspiration in it for sewing enthusiasts of all levels. The book is by Boutique-Sha. They have produced quite a few books with Search Press and are a craft and lifestyle publisher in Japan who have written hundreds of publications and had them translated into English. The content is great. It teaches you the skills you will need, explains the tools and techniques, and provides 25 inspiring projects you can make. The projects vary from little framed pictures to larger sewing projects like pouches and purses so there is a fab range of items to make no matter what your skill level. I imagine you would start (as I did) with a small project but return to this book again and again to make more items as your skills grow. The photography is really good quality in this book. There are lots of detailed clear photos in the hints and tips sections to explain the techniques, and the photography to show you the finished projects is really nicely set up too. The section which shows you how to make each project uses illustrations instead of photography and these are really well done too. To me the book works well because it covers such a wide variety of experience levels. A beginner could pick it up (like I did) and be really happy learning a great new skill, but an experienced person could also pick it up and find plenty of useful tips and lovely projects. This is a really great book. It has something for beginners, lots for experienced kogin lovers, small projects, big projects, it’s a really well thought out selection of skills and projects. I was a total newbie to the art of kogin and it taught me a great new skill which I think is beautiful. The projects use techniques which date back hundreds of years and make it somehow look traditional or vintage but modern too. As I said at the start, I thought the best way to review the book was to teach myself a new skill from it. So, I did. I decided to use the sample project pattern to make a piece to insert in a handbag mirror frame I had. I think it turned out really well, which is totally credit to this book. -- Jo Burgess * www.mrxstitch.com *Discover the art of kogin, a style of traditional Japanese sashiko embroidery with modern appeal. It introduces the Japanese embroidery technique which originated in the Edo period as a functional method of repairing and reinforcing fabrics. Kogin uses counted stitching techniques and careful placement of parallel lines to create striking geometric patterns which can be used to adorn a wide variety of objects. After a brief introduction to the technique and its history, Modern Kogin presents the projects covered in the book, from small brooches and hair ties to more complicated pieces including bags and pouches. While the items themselves are generally simple in their construction, requiring only a small amount of knowledge in order to finish the stitching into a completed object, the patterns are intricate and beautiful from the beginning although deceptively simple to stitch. Kogin embroidery may look complicated, but each piece is made up of nothing more than simple straight lines. While the work is simple, the effect is striking, especially when using bold colours against white fabric. The patterns include instructions alongside detailed explanation of how Kogin is worked, including tips and tricks to keep your stitches neat and the order in which to work them followed by step-by-step instruction for each project, including help on making up items such as bags, purses and biscornu pincushions. This book is invaluable for anyone interested in exquisite openwork embroidery. * Machine Knitting Monthly *The charts are clearly drawn, and the images are very well photographed, something which is not easy to do with whitework! Suggestions for the best way to work the stitches are carefully explained. At the start of each chapter is a photograph of an item that uses the stitches in the following sections. These, too, are beautifully photographed, so well that it is almost possible to work out the details of the pattern from the photograph alone. The effects produced by the various stitches are lovely, and the ways of adapting them by altering the thread, or by the spacing of stitching, and by working the stitch in different directions, are mind-blowing in their variety. The cover boasts over 140 different stitches, but when you take account of the variations of thread and spacing, there are in fact many more. [...] As a reference book of ideas to use in your own designs, this book is a treasure for anyone interested in pulled thread work. It is certainly very welcome addition to my bookshelves - except that it will probably not be on the actual shelves much - it is far too useful to remain in its allotted place for long! -- Alison Larkin * Book Threads Magazine *This is a great book. I love the cover of the book; the design is exquisite makes me eager to want to open the book. The cover insert and products are very appealing visually and I love the different stitch techniques illustrated on this page. The introduction explains pulled thread embroidery in simple terms and the origins of the craft was fascinating to read. It’s user friendly for crafters of all abilities and the explanation of materials useful and clearly explained. The Staircase stitch is stunning and I love the cross stitch design. -- Caroline Perraton Waters * Customer Review *Traditionalists will love learning how to work ‘counted thread openwork’ or ‘drawn fabric embroidery’. The stitches and techniques section is so clear and easy to see what to do. The projects are modern and instructions are clear. The iron-on transfers are a great addition. Would recommend highly. -- Nicola Hazleton * Customer Review *I've been an embroiderer for a number of years but wanted to try some modern embroidery. This book contains a good range of stitches which are explained clearly with lots of photos. There are some really cute designs and once I'd chosen my first I couldn't wait to start so I substituted a few of the colours of thread with similar ones I already have. Using 6 strands of thread together is a big learning curve but I love the finished look and have already chosen design number 2. Iron-on transfers are included for each design or they can be traced. I would consider this book suitable for a confident beginner or someone, like me, wanting to try something different from traditional embroidery. -- Val Hatton * Customer Review *A beginner’s guide to modern raised stitches, 3D Embroidery is a curated collection of over 30 raised embroidery stitches and techniques, taught within the context of 20 in-hoop embroidery projects. The book is written very well, taking into account both beginners and more experienced sewists. The designs are very well photographed, and the instructions are really clear and easy to follow. There is a wide variety of designs, and the techniques for woven or knitted mending are quite decorative. The only thing that seems to be missing is any tips on how to stop the material used for patching on the woven sections from fraying. Other than this minor comment, this book is very educational and enjoyable. Well worth the money. -- Jacqui Grainger * Amazon Customer Review *This book is easy to follow and full of inspiration. An excellent book to inspire both beginners and experienced sewers; even those who have never picked up a needle to have can have a go at decorative mending before throwing away a loved garment or item. 10 in stock

Book SynopsisWith its beginnings in seventeenth century England, stumpwork is today making a revival. Come join us for an exciting journey into the world of raised embroidery. There are over 400 clear step-by-step photographs and instructions presented in five easy to use sections and 20 stunning designs from around the world. Each design is beautifully presented with colour photography, easy to follow instructions and full size pattern. There is expert advice on the materials and tools you need to ensure success and enjoyment, and tips and hints to help you perfect your stitches and techniques.Trade ReviewFrom Mary Corbet's Needle 'n' Thread" A-Z of Stumpwork was originally published by Country Bumpkin Publications, but, as of 2015, it has been recently re-published by Search Press, along with the rest of the A-Z needlework series. This is good news for embroiderers worldwide, because the A-Z books are some of the best embroidery reference books (and the most beautiful!), and they’re now available to a wider audience, more affordably. A-Z of Stumpwork focuses on dimensional embroidery techniques, made famous in 17th century embroidery, and enjoying a huge resurgence in popularity today. The cover above is from the new A-Z of Stumpwork published by Search Press in 2015. If you own the old version, or if you’re considering buying a used copy, the old cover looks like this: The book begins with general information about stumpwork: materials needed, tools, how to transfer the design, and so forth. Then it launches into the instructional section, which covers surface embroidery stitches (both raised and padded stitches), padding and slip techniques, wirework techniques, needlelace techniques, and beading techniques. Each technique section is filled with step-by-step color photos. Below each photo is the written explanation of the step illustrated. If you’ve wondered how to use felt as padding, wonder no more – the book shows several different ways to use felt, whether in single layers or worked up over many layers. The book instructs on ways of making separate slips – that is, embroidered pieces that are separate from the main design and then attached onto the design. Wired leaves always come to mind when I think of stumpwork, and the book demonstrates clearly how to make these detachable leaves and petals, and how to attach them to the main design. Beads are a regular part of many stumpwork designs, so there’s a thorough section on how to attach beads to your stumpwork projects. And often in stumpwork, we run across covered beads – berries or whatnot made out of thread-covered wooden beads. The book details different ways to cover these types of beads. Finally, the back of the book features over twenty beautiful stumpwork projects created by talented designers from all over the world. (Incidentally, the “Magic Mushrooms” stumpwork designabove is available for free on the Country Bumpkin website.) The designs range from tropical birds to modern flowers to scenes of Africa to Elizabethan flowers – there’s a wide variety of designs, and they’re suited for beginners to stumpwork, to intermediate (and beyond). The back of the book contains line drawings for all the designs and their elements. What can I say about this book that the book doesn’t say for itself? If you’re interested in stumpwork embroidery, then I’d say this is one of those necessary reference books that you’ll want on your bookshelf! -- Mary Corbet * Mary Corbet's Needle 'n' Thread *April 2015 Since it's 17th-century heyday, stitchers have been charmed by raised embroidery's ability to produce truly animated results, and stumpwork is enjoying a well-deserved renaissance. Lizzie Kulinski's teddy bear 'Henry' begs to be picked up and cuddled with his padded muzzle and domed tum. Jan Kerton's beaded 3D blackberries are succulent enough to lure the birds from the trees. Libby Vater's 'Cottontail' bunny's ear, worked as a detached piece, is affixed with an instruction impossible to resist: 'Gently stroke the ear to shape it.' Packed with clear step-by-step photographs and instructions and full-size trace of patterns, this is an essential guide; stumpwork beginners and experts will appreciate the careful distillation of basic and advanced techniques, styles and colourful inspiration. A welcome practicality is the 'lay-flat' binding, which enables the book to remain open for reference while you stitch. * Stitch *March 2015 This form of three-dimensional embroidery has been around since the 17th century. This book shows stitches used with over 400 step-by-step photos. Full-size patterns are included for 20 designs. You'll find out all about raised and padded stitches. Each stitch is clearly shown and the instructions are easy to follow. The designs include mushrooms, flowers, animals, a bear, berries and butterflies. With each design, you see clearly at a glance the stitches used, materials needed and order of work. There are no step-by-step photos for working the designs. Favourite designs include Elizabethan Bouquet; Geraldton Wax, an Iris and if I could only choose one, it would be Gossamer because the silver wire worked butterfly is stunning. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *Table of Contents4 GENERAL INFORMATION 4 MATERIALS Fabrics and interfacings Threads Wire Beads Found objects TOOLS Needles Hoops Scissors Needlelace pad Other tools TRANSFERRING DESIGNS Transferring designs to main fabric Transferring shapes for cutting out STITCHES & TECHNIQUES 8 Surface Embroidery Techniques - raised and padded stitches 18 Padding and Slip Techniques 24 Wirework Techniques 30 Needlelace 40 Beading DESIGNS 46 Magic Mushrooms 50 Nature's Diner 53 Angel 56 Wild Rose Garland 59 Elizabethan Bouquet 64 Cottontail 66 Berry Garland 70 Fishwatch 72 Henry 75 Rainbow Lorikeet 78 Out of Africa 86 Wild Passionfruit 89 Tulipa 92 Geraldton Wax 94 Christmas Bells 97 Spring Splendour 100 Gossamer 104 Spirit of Spring 108 Forbidden Fruit 110 Verity 113 PATTERNS 124 INDEX 128 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
