Book SynopsisIf you think you know what cross stitch is, look again! Jamie Chalmers, aka Mr X Stitch, shows you how to cross stitch using simple step-by-step instructions and also takes you to the frontiers of cross stitch design. The book is aimed at stitchers of all abilities, from absolute beginners looking to learn a new craft to embroiderers and cross stitchers who want to do something different in cross stitching. For many, cross stitch conjures up images of cute kittens and country cottages, but this book shows people that there’s a different side to cross stitching – that it’s an art in its own right, and will encourage them to be a little braver with their art. Jamie’s writing style is fun, entertaining and highly inspirational. The book aims to appeal to men as well as women, encouraging one and all to take up the ancient craft. It teaches the basics of cross stitching, including information on materials, tools, techniques and colour blending, but also puts Jamie’s own individual spin on it, with urban flavours and the introduction of different materials such as glow-in-the-dark threads and stitching on metal. As well as providing exciting designs to stitch, there is guidance on how to create cross stitch designs of your own, for example by using photographs and other images for reference. Jamie also showcases the work of other contemporary cross stitchers who are pushing the boundaries of their craft, and introduces more than 20 stunning cutting-edge projects to make, showing that beauty, innovation and 'craftivism' are alive and kicking in this inspirational book.Trade ReviewThink you know everything about cross stitch, or perhaps you have always wanted to have a go but think it might not be for you? Here is a book that cheerfully debunks lots of stitching myths and shows you that there is more to cross stitch than you might think. I do love a book that challenges stereotypes and shakes up the rules that inevitably accumulate around any hobby. Mr X Stitch does not look like most people’s idea of what a cross stitcher should look like which is refreshing in itself, and you can expect no charts of teddies, pets or gardens. Instead you get a humorous and common sense look at getting kitted out, learning the basics and stitching on more than just even weave fabrics. Topics often omitted or glossed over briefly get some fairly detailed coverage too, such as washing, pressing, framing, sorting out the back of the work and a whole page of useful tips. There are some charts to get you started including words, a geometric squirrel, rainbow flower, creative use of glow in the dark threads and even a Game of Thrones inspired piece. The book also looks at how other people have used cross stitch in creative ways including stitching on metal, abstracts, decorating biker gear, 3D work and even large scale work on fences. If you fancy having a go at your own charts there is a section on doing this with a computer, including an excellent beginner introduction to using software featuring a simple design. This is put through the paces in various sizes and a limited palette showing how to work with different fabric counts, getting the best look for your work and even how to do a pop art version. I wish I had seen something like that when I got my first cross stitch design program as it takes a lot of the trial and error out of getting to grips with using one. The book concludes with looking at plastic canvas, aluminium foil and other things with holes in that can be stitched, as well as a few pages of handy alphabets to aid your designing. There is even more in here than everything I have described so whatever your level if you want a good contemporary look at cross stitch this is the book for you. -- Rachel A Hyde * Myshelf.com *Issue 13 Needlework is having a real resurgence at the minute. Famed for being one of instagram's biggest supporters of hand stitching Jamie Chalmers, AKA Mr X Stitch has brough out his very own Guide to Cross Stitch, which is packed with original patterns and hints and tips to inspire and guide you every step of the way. We're especially smitten with the squirrel on the cover, which would make a perfect project for autumn evenings. * Sew now *A fun, entertaining, inspiring and instructive book by Jamie Chalmers, alias Mr. X Stitch, connoisseur of contemporary embroidery. Even if you think you know what cross-stitch is, is this book worth the effort. To the hand of simple step-by-step step instructions the writer's limits the possibilities with cross stitches and encourages them at their own borders to shift. On the order come: the basis of cross stitches, information about materials, tools, techniques, colors mix and finish. Also design it yourself and it use of the computer thereby, come amply offer. The book also contains work from a number of contemporary artists working with work cross stitch. This review has been translated from Dutch * Textiel Plus *Cross stitch has shaken off its lame image in recent years, largely thanks to pioneers like Jamie Chalmers, better known as Mr X Stitch. In this book he captures the energy of the contemporary cross stitch revival, with examples of modern designs and 20 projects, backed up with instructions on the basics of cross stitching – from materials and tools to techniques, using computer programs and colour blending. Once you’ve mastered the basics, he shows how artists have refined the basic cross stitch to make works that are both striking (cross-stitched fences by Les Deuz’Bro) and original (stitched metal works by Severiją Inčirauskaitę- Kriaunevičienę). * Embroidery *This is an awesome book, a useful reference tool, full of fascinating hints, tips and tutorials. I also found it an absorbing read and found myself sitting with a coffee, poring over the pages. The many unusual and interesting charts and suggestions for using materials such as GitD thread had me reaching for my purse and heading out to my local craft store. I would heartily recommend the purchase of this book , either as a special treat for yourself or a thoughtful gift for a friend. -- Jennie Meadows * Customer Review *I'm and experienced cross stitcher and thoroughly enjoyed this book. First time I've seen a book like this written by a man but the author shows a real enthusiasm for his subject. I liked the continuity from what essential equipment to have through to projects of varying complexity. It is written with wit and humour and holds the attention. The interviews within were very thought provoking. Somethings like the glow in the dark thread I'd not even heard of. This also made me think outside the box from just making pretty pictures to frame or hanging in the hoop to using on clothing or metallic objects. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone, especially if looking for something a bit out of the ordinary. -- Kim Bond * Customer Review *This is a fantastic book! I have been a longtime Mr X Stitch fan, and have attended a couple of his workshops, so getting my grubby mitts on a copy of this was a no brainer and I was not dissappointed. In his fun and chatty style, Jamie talks through the basics, as well as introducing more complex designs, and includes interviews/features on some really interesting, cutting edge stitch designers. The in depth analysis of how stitch/thread count affects the finished item (I adore that pineapple), and his advice about colour choices make this a must have book in my opinion. Cute, but never cutesy designs and great content. More please, Mr X Stitch! -- Natasha Field * Customer Review *I've been a cross stitcher since my teens and I didn't think any books about cross stitch would be more than basic how-to's and patterns.. I was happily surprised when I received The Mr X Stitch Guide to Cross Stitch, it's full of useful information from the basic how-to to tips and tricks, framing, pattern design and colour theory plus ideas for thinking out out of the box, taking it further and artist interviews AND patterns! This is the best guide out there about cross stitch and even as an experienced cross stitcher, this book is going to stay on my bookshelf and become a well thumbed guide. -- Becca Birtles * Customer Review *This is quite a modern style of cross stitch to what I'm used to but very inspiring to try something out of my comfort zone. I've met the author at an event before which is why I wanted this book and there are lots of his designs to try. It's a good book to get if you want to try something a bit different to traditional cross stitch designs. Now, which one to try first... -- Maria Ticehurst * Customer Review *Very good book. Excellent designs very innovative. Look especially Whitby abbey at sunset. But all designs are great. I'm a new person to cross stitch. Will definitely try out designs and show fellow cross stitchers the book. -- Linda Susan Bryan * Customer Review *This book is such a refreshing change to anything that on a book shelf in today's market. Well laid out in easy to follow sections ( for anyone new to cross stitch or a old hand at such a lovely hobby) I love the squirrel the flower and Whitby abbey with its 99 colours so refreshing to the usual flowers and teddys . If you want to refresh your interest in cross stitch this is the book for you. Will be a keeper on my book shelves. -- Jane Perry * Customer Review *I have never done cross stitch before so thought that I would like to review this book and contrary to my expectations, this book is quite exciting- an adjective I hadn’t previously associated with cross stitch. No roses and hearts here, more interesting contemporary projects offered. They include skylines, bargello with a difference, 3D objects, pop art and typography. The latter is what attracted me. It has very clear instructions for a novice like me, enabling me to create a suitably salutary notice for my home. In addition to clear stitching instructions, it has interesting sections on framing, computer design, the use of colour, embroidery on unusual mediums including plastic and metal, amongst others. A great book which has succeeded in capturing my imagination and will be used to create many an item in the future. -- Janet V (contributor) * Customer review *Table of ContentsForeword by Julie Jackson 6 Introduction 8 Tools & materials 10 Making a start 18 How to cross stitch 20 Framing your work 28 The back 32 Colour 36 A moment of context 46 Outlier: Zoe Gilbertson 54 Glow in the Dark 56 Stitching and travelling 63 Outlier: Kate Blandford 72 More Than a Hobby 74 Peace of mind 76 Embroidery as therapy 79 Craftivism 83 Embroidery as an art form 86 Outlier: Severija Inčirauskaitė-Kriauneviĉienė 90 Pattern Design 92 Computer design 94 Fabric count 99 Colour 100 Epic pineapple 102 Outlier: Lord Libidan 116 Thinking Outside the Hoop 118 If it’s got holes in it... 120 Stitching on plastic 122 Stitching on metal 127 We’re all adults 131 Outlier: Les Deuz'Bro 132 Final thoughts 134 Alphabet fonts 136 Acknowledgements 140 Index 141 Projects Back in Black 32 Fleur de Couleur 40 From Ampersand to Bargello 42 Something Meaningful 47 Sqrl! 50 Empire State 58 Winter is Coming 64 Home Sweet Home Network 68 VodkAtomic 70 I Got Yer Mindfulness Right Here 76 I am an Addict 80 #StitchforSyria 83 Mona 87 Introducing the Pineapple! 95 Portrait of a Pineapple 104 Pop Art Pineapple 108 Whitby Abbey at Sunset 112 Bling 120 Silver Devil 124 C-Tron 125 Yellow Blade 126 Look! 127 What The?! 128

When I got this book I thought the same, I didn’t think I could come up with anything that looked as good as the pictures even though I’ve been doing all kinds of crafts most of my life. A delightful book suitable for all abilities. -- Embroiderers Guild * Embroiderers Guild *Joyful Stitching offers a bright and colorful, simple approach to embroidery combined with wool felt and appliqué. If you love wool felt, appliqué, a folksy look, embroidery, texture, and color, Laura’s projects will be right up your stitching alley! Lovely presentation in color, good instruction, fun projects, very accessible to beginners and terrific even for advanced embroiderers who want to simplify and rev things up with a lot of color! -- Mary Corbet * Needle 'n Thread *This is the ideal book for anybody who thinks that embroidery is too “quiet” for them. Perhaps it conjures up images of florals and practical items such as tea towels? As it says on the cover with this book you can learn how to “transform fabric with improvisational embroidery” and have a lot of fun in the process. As soon as I saw the bright, folk art inspired image of a bird on the cover it made me want to start stitching. As the author says in her introduction you can really bring fabric to life with embroidery and the projects in here all demonstrate this. Most books on freestyle embroidery use 6-strand floss on cotton or linen, but this one uses perle thread on silk, wool and felt. The author also uses a lot of variegated skeins which adds a lot of the liveliness and also omits having to buy a very large number of shades of each color. The book starts with a brief overview as well as a section on what you need and how to use it. This includes how to use perle thread, methods of transferring designs to silk, wool and felt and buying the right needles and fabric. Each stitch is then shown in several good sized captioned photographs; these are easy to follow and I like the contrast between thread and fabric. Stitches are listed alphabetically and comprise all the basic freestyle stitches plus a few useful extras. The rest of the book contains the six projects which are wonderfully bright depictions of an apple, bird, heart filled with flowers, stylized plants, hand of fortune and a landscape with a house and lake. Each project covers several pages and contains a fair number of captioned photographs, list of what you need complete with a photograph of the threads plus instructions on finishing. The projects are pictures rather than functional items to be enjoyed as they are. US embroiderers can buy the variegated threads, hand dyed fabrics and even kits of the projects in the author’s online store; those in other countries will need to look elsewhere. This aside I found this to be a beautiful and inspiring book, ideal for anybody of any level who wants to see where freestyle embroidery can take them. -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *

  • Crewel Embroidery: 7 Enchanting Designs Inspired

Search Press Ltd Crewel Embroidery: 7 Enchanting Designs Inspired

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIn this beautiful book, Tatiana Popova shows the reader how to create stunning crewelwork embroideries inspired by traditional fairy tales, including The Wizard of Oz, Karolcia, the Wild Swans and Cinderella. This magical collection takes as its central theme a magnificent embroidery depicting the ‘Tree of Happiness’. Each part of the embroidery is then explored in detail through stitch diagrams, explanations of the threads used, and alternative ways of working. There are seven wonderful designs in total, each dedicated to one of Tatiana’s favourite fairy tales, and all illustrated with gorgeous photographs and informative diagrams. Over 90 stitches are described in the book, all worked using stranded cotton and cotton pearl thread rather than traditional crewel wool, which gives the embroideries a fresh, modern appeal. Whether you are new to embroidery or an experienced embroiderer looking for inspiration and expert guidance, Tatiana’s beautiful book is one you will turn to again and again.Trade ReviewLast year I reviewed this author’s first book The Seasons in Silk Ribbon Embroidery on this site. This was a book with the wow factor in spades, a rare treat for the more advanced embroiderer. A year on and here is another such book, this time showing what crewel embroidery is capable of when inspired by fairy tales. The main project in this book is a larger piece entitled Tree of Happiness. Each section of this is also featured as a smaller design elsewhere in a different colorway, and each of these sections was inspired by a different fairy tale. Ms Popova is from the Ukraine, so the tales are more varied than they would be from an English speaking author. Andersen’s The Wild Swans are featured as is the Wizard of Oz and Cinderella, but there are also Polish and Russian stories plus a ribbonwork owl, the inspiration behind the author’s website name. To learn the stitches start at the beginning where you will find some very clear and foolproof staged photographs. There are also many tips here, and a gallery of photographs showing the whole tree plus all the separate elements. Each of these is also shown paler with a numbered key showing which stitch goes where with a handy page reference. This is a large format book and there are plenty of good-sized photographs with close-ups so you get a good idea of what the work is supposed to look like. Each chapter covers a different element, and as well as the expected key and list of materials there is a brief description of the story plus a personal reminiscence about how the author was inspired to choose it. This makes for interesting reading, and also caused me to ponder on what gets my own creative juices flowing. The embroidery uses Appletons wools or DMC threads which include stranded cottons (including variegated) plus pearl cotton sizes 8 and 12. The instructions are clear, but despite the author’s claim that beginners can tackle the projects I imagine most newbie embroiderers would be better starting with simpler work. Turn to the back for the outlines and advice on transferring to fabric, including tips for working on patterned material. This is definitely one for that keeper shelf, and my favorite book of 2020 so far. I can’t wait for book three! -- Rachel Hyde * myshelf.com *This is a book filled with stunning crewel work embroidery. The designs are inspired by the fairy tales we all love and each design is accompanied with the story which brings each piece to life. Tatiana Popova is a major craftswoman in her art, and what she does is beautiful. She not only demonstrates the techniques of crewel, she simplifies and breaks down each design into small achievable parts. Diagrams, stitches and an array of colourful glossy photographs showcase the thread work and many of them have a 3D effect so it is easy to see each stage. These stages are divided into ‘zones’ which make it simple to understand. A lot of useful information is included and there is a conversion guide for various threads. I highly recommend this book. -- Tracy Shephard * Amazon *A beautiful book with excellent instructions and images. The images are good enough to aid your stitching. I love that you can do elements of the design or put it all together as one large design if you are more competent. A nice range of stitches covered as well with plenty of 'how to' instruction. A new author for me but one I will be looking at again. -- Claire Madder * Amazon *Oh what a fabulous book. I’m new to crewel embroidery so have to keep referring to the stitch patterns early on in the book but it’s all there! Exactly what I needed. The instructions are so well illustrated. I like the way the whole design is divided into 12 zones. I loved the storytelling behind each design. A truly inspiring book. -- Karen Callis * Amazon *Issue March/April This is a colourful wow of a book with appeal for those who admire crewel work but would appreciate a modern approach: Tatiana Popova's colourful designs and fluid approach to materials tick those boxes. Favouring stranded cotton and cotton pearl thread over traditional crewel wool gives her designs a contemporary feel, along with multiple options for different colour palettes and a wider range of 90 stitches, all of which are explained in clear instructions (with helpful photos of stitches, rather than diagrams), detailed photography and pattern diagrams to copy. Popova has established her own aesthetic, with designs that are equally enticing to novices as well as established stitchers. * Embroidery *A beautiful book! Tatiana tells folktales which link to each element of the design. These are stand alone designs which can be either embroidered individually or combined to make the gorgeous Tree of Life design seen on the cover. Stitch instructions are provided in alphabetical order for all the stitches used and the photographs are stunning. This is a truly exquisite book, I own a LOT of embroidery books, but this is definitely one of my favourites. -- Rachel Clarke * Amazon *While I'm only an occasional embroiderer, crewel is my favourite technique by far and I have a few books on the subject. This book has some great photography, with many large, vivid, detailed images so you can really see what you're supposed to be doing. The stitch instructions are particularly strong - I really like the way that the author uses different colours to show how the stitches build up. This is a vibrant book with delicious photos and it's a worthwhile addition to any embroidery library - if I were thinking about buying a crewelwork kit, I'd definitely pull this out instead as the instructions are so good. -- Kate Rawlinson * Amazon *On the whole I am enjoying this book, the pictures and stitch descriptions are excellent, the folk tales charming and the patterns challenging. I would recommend this book for intermediate level and above. -- Alison Finch * Amazon *This is a truly beautiful book. The photography is fantastic making the embroidery look like jewels on the page. Tatiana's instructions and step by step photos are really clear and easy to follow. I can't wait to start my crewel Embroidery journey. -- Latona Sewell * Amazon *Absolutely stunning book, lots of advice, beautiful pictures showing closeup work. -- Claire Allen * Customer Review *Table of ContentsIntroduction Stitches and techniques Creative stitching Crewel designs Stitch index

Book SynopsisWritten by expert shibori teacher Jane Callender, this beautiful, practical book is packed with both traditional and inventive stitch-resist techniques, a complete dyeing guide and an inspirational gallery of Jane’s work. This book contains all the information a beginner will need to get started - including tips on dyeing in small spaces and a guide to all the necessary health and safety considerations - but is also packed with innovative techniques and inspiring designs that will appeal to the experienced textile artist. The book is broken into three sections. The first shows you all the key stitch-resist techniques you need - from the basics right through to creating intricate designs – and all are clearly explained with photography and illustrations. Learn how to create a range of different shibori styles, oversew, make circles and other shapes, use grids, double needles, stencils and caps, bind fabrics, work with machine stitch, use fabric buffers and incorporate appliqué. The second section shows you how to use motifs to create pattern: learn how to create and position designs, including traditional arrangements such as Karamatsu and Tatewaku, create composite designs and get tips on how to plan your own patterns. Finally, the book contains a complete guide to dyeing – it contains recipes, tips and advice so that you can get the very best from every dye bath you make. Learn how to dye with both natural and synthetic indigo, in organic and synthetic vats. Also choose from a wide range of natural dyes, iron rust and dazzling Procion dyes, which can be used in combination or alone for amazing effects. Trade ReviewJane Callender is possessed of a unique talent. Since she was a student at West Surrey College of Art and Design, she has dedicated herself to the subtle arts of shibori and indigo dyeing. She is an acknowledged master of her craft. Her innovative award-winning work, admired both for its artistry and high level of technique, has been widely exhibited. A patient and accomplished teacher with all the necessary technical skills at her fingertips, she lectures and conducts workshops across the globe and through her website ‘Callishibori’ supplies shibori materials and tools to a worldwide audience. Well known as the author of the seminal 2000 Pattern Combinations, she has now written this superlative book. Clear, concise, instructive and inspiring, it is destined to be an essential manual and classic work of reference for both beginners and advanced practitioners for many years to come. -- John Gillow * Customer Review *For anyone who has ever pulled up and dyed a simple stitched resist, the beauty and complexity of Jane Callender's work is awe-inspiring. In this generous book, she shares, with great detail, her mastery of shibori techniques and dyeing. Attention to detail makes this an excellent guide for all levels. An introduction explains shibori as the interaction between compressed cloth and dye. The section entitled "Shibori Tradition", along with additional pages throughout the book, reveal the history of shibori worldwide and how politics, economics, and fashion affected design, including particular techniques developed by significant Japanese masters in modern times. The "Techniques" section proceeds from the simplest to more complex stitched patterns and shows the power of simple motifs in repeat. Even complex techniques are made clear with step-by-step photos and illustrations. Only a few indigo photos are perhaps too dark to be easily discernible. Some 100 pages are devoted to cloth preparation and process for specific techniques. Even the most experienced practitioner will learn something new about stitching on a single layer, on folded or pleated cloth, or combined methods such as capping and oversewing. Developing a motif by filling in larger shapes encourages creativity. Techniques not usually associated with stitch resist, such as clamp resist and binding or capping to a core, increase our understanding of the possibilities. Suggestions on dip dyeing for variety in some patterns and buffers for clean edges and to prevent knots from pulling through are invaluable. Degumming silk and even working on synthetic fabrics for interesting dimensional results without dyeing is explained. Japanese stitch names are used throughout. The sections on "Pattern" and "Dyes" will set the novice on the right path. Although many examples are dyed in traditional indigo, which is particularly well suited to resist dyeing, mordanted natural dyes, tannins and fiber reactive dyes enliven the book. There are excellent didactic chapters at the end of the book on these dyes. Indigo in particular is well explained. Callender acknowledges the dye experts she has learned from: Michelle Kwon of maiwa, french dye chemist Michel Garcia, and her compatriot author Jenny Balford Paul. The chapters devoted to discharge and dyeing whet the appetite for further exploration. The reader is encouraged to innovate and adapt traditional patterns according to her own artistic creativity. The author provides excellent sections on working with a grid and planning ahead for complex interactions between small pattern motifs. Other valuable tips are highlighted throughout. Callender's book should be read through with care and referred back to often when planning a new project. In this age of searchable documents on line, references to useful pages on particular techniques are appreciated. Finally, the gallery of Callender's own inspiring artwork shows what true mastery of craft can produce. This is an excellent companion to Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada's two earlier seminal books on shibori. Callender's book is a must have for all textile schools, shibori dyers and surface design artists. -- Barbara Shapiro * Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot *Autumn 2017 The author is very well known as both a tutor and textile artist, and this book certianly met my high expectations. Starting with an explanation of the process and an overview of worldwide shibori traditions, the text moves seamlessly through a full description of procedures, starting with methods of scouring fabrics for dyeing, knots and stiching variations. The very clearly illustrated and numerous step-by-step methods, generally referred to by their traditional terminology, are illustrated with photographs of the results. Design advice is provided throughout, so that you don't just master techniques, but learn to use them as effectively as possible. Chapters towards the end of the book are devoted to dyeing firstly, with indigo (including the natural organic vat), then -more unusually for shibori using natural dyes, iron and finally cold water fibre reactive dyes. Unusually this book is very suitable for both beginners and more advanced dyers. For the former, the text is logically organised and clear enough to be viewed as a complete self-teaching guide, but even for those with some experience there are likely to be some new ideas to try. If you have never tried shibori before, the stunning photographs will inevitably tempt you in. Highly recommended. * Journal for Weavers, Spinners and Dyers *A comprehensive resource for shibori. The book is divided into three sections: Techniques, Pattern and Dyeing with how-to instructions and photographs. To my knowledge this is the most comprehensive book on shibori. Develop motifs for unique textiles. Indigo recipes and ones for other dyes too, ensure a range a colours. Suitable for the beginner with challenges for every level. Illustrated throughout with some of the most remarkable examples of shibori outside Japan. Learn about shibori tradition, preparation, process, pattern, folds and more. Mogume is my favourite technique. I found Jane's work years ago, and my jaw still drops at her amazing achievements. I just want to work through this book from beginning to end and over and over again. Absolutely essential for anyone interested in dyeing, stitching and shibori. Simply wonderful, demonstrating the true art of shibori. * Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *Jane Callender has written the most marvellous book, 'Stitched Shibori', in encyclopaedic detail. Exploring the art of Shibori, in particular reference to stitched pieces and the pattern they create, this book exhaustively covers everything. It consists of three sections – Technique, Pattern and Dyeing. In Technique, there are 35 different approaches to stitching fabric. Many different stitches and patterns are explored, whether stitching on a single or double layer, how space between stitches can change a pattern, curve, pleat or binding. There are variations within each choice, producing multitudes of photographs of all the different effects achieved by changing the smallest detail. It is quite mind-boggling! If you want to work on stitched Shibori techniques, there can’t be many places where you can find all the answers. Pattern is a short section but teaches how to create the different patterns and stencils. You can see how combining techniques creates an infinite number of patterns – if you thought the first section was overwhelming, suddenly the world of Shibori opens up more widely. The Dyes section is extensively recipe-laden with many different Shibori dyes and how to create them. * Workshop on the web *May 2017 Shibori is a technique with its roots in Africa, China, and Japan. I’ve seen some pieces that are as intricate and delicate as a snowflake and as such I’ve rather filed this technique in the box marked ‘advanced’ i.e. not for me. Jane is a highly respected Shibori artist, teacher and speaker and so used to breaking down the technicalities of this centuries-old tradition into practical steps. The book is laid out intelligently, starting with the process of sewing in a single line of straight stitch with clear illustrations and photos showing the results that can be achieved. You can progress quite quickly by introducing more lines and layers or with folds and curves. Finished patterns can quickly become quite kaleidoscopic and for anyone interested in designing their own fabrics this could possibly get quite addictive. I was particularly drawn to the chapter on Wrapped Pattern, which combines stitching on the fold with binding the cloth around a cylinder for its more unpredictable results (but that’s me all over: living on the edge!). As with any technique involving dyes, you’ve got to have a certain amount of space to experiment and be comfortable handling chemicals. There are safety guidelines and recipes for all manner of dyes, both natural and synthetic, at the back of the book and some amazing colour combinations can be achieved with practice. Marigolds at the ready! * Popular Patchwork *Issue 40 Stitched Shibori is the Japanese art of immersing textiles in a dye bath and creating pattern using a range of stitched resist techniques (think tye-dyeing but on another level!). In this practical and beautiful guide , renowned expert Jane Callender showcases techniques, patterns and dyes in three comprehensive sections. Complete with full instructions, illustrations, photographs, designs, tips and advice, her guide features ideas for using grids, folding, pleating, motifs and stencils (plus other techniques) to create beautiful designs. It includes due recipes and useful advice on which fabrics to use. We believe it is a wonderful handbook for beginners and experienced textile artists alike. * Reloved *Shibori is a resist dye technique often associated with indigo. In its most basic form, stitches and/or pleats are applied to cloth before dyeing to create undyed, neutral marks or areas of pattern. Jane Callender, as Jenny Balfour-Paul explains in her foreward, is one of the few British shibori practitioners whose work can be considered a match to the foremost Japanese artists and in this book, the author brings to bear more than three decades of expert knowledge in this ancient craft. Callender wastes no time delving into every aspect of creating patterns using stitch resist. She begins with a brief introduction to shibori, before explaining the basics of preparation, tying knots, pulling threads and simple stitch arrangements. In pages 22-122 she explains all the key stitch-resist techniques needed – how various lengths, directions and rhythms of hand and machine stitch produce different marks. When combined with folds, pleats, binding, capping, wrapping, appliqué or multiple layers, the possibilities are endless. A second chapter reveals how to create intricate patterns. Finally she provides tuition and recipes for natural and synthetic indigo dyeing, as well as natural dyes and throughout, the instructions are explained clearly with helpful diagrams and photographs. Jane Callender has condensed a lifetime of practical expertise to create what can be best described as the shibori’s artist’s ‘best friend’, packed with both traditional and inventive stitch-resist techniques, designs and inspiration, including examples of her own work. Readers of this book will not be disappointed – both beginners and experienced makers will benefit from this guide, which at this price provides incredible value for a reference book you will return to again and again. * Embroidery Magazine *This is a lovely book, with a new technique I haven't tried before. I must admit I am more of a knitter and crocheter than stithcer, but the running stitch technique is easy to master, and the effects are amazing! What interested me most about the book was the section on natural dyeing (with yarn in mind!), and I found the step by step instructions really interesting and easy to follow. I have already ordered some indigo and alum, and intend to go foraging for some other natural products to continue this experiment! I honestly don't know how much shibori stitching I can see in my future, but I can see this book being pored over with regards to the fantastic dye section -- Natasha Field * Customer Review *At its simplest, shibori is the art of folding and pleating fabric, so distorting it before immersion in the dyebath. But it is so much more than that and eminent artist Jane Callender, who has devoted her working life to the art of shibori and indigo dyeing, presents, what will surely become, without doubt, a reference work for future generations of devotees of the craft. The book is divided into three sections – technique, pattern and dyeing, each meticulously explored with both lavish photography and highly detailed diagrams and explanations. A huge range of different stitch techniques are illustrated, used to create a myriad of specific designs and effects, together with the recipes for indigo and fibre-reactive dyes. This is an invaluable and inspiring resource book for both the beginner and the more experienced – highly recommended. * East Kent Embroiderers Guild *A beautifully presented book, with lots of information on the history of Shibori.Lovely projects, though not for the complete beginner to embroidery. The techniques are very clearly explained and illustrated , with step by step instruction,Definately a book i will use and reuse multiple times -- Jane Johnson * Customer Review *At first glance I thought this was going to be a little too technical and difficult for a beginner but I was so wrong. There is a section on the fascinating history of the craft, lots of different stitches to try and also details on how to make your own dye recipes. You are guided through each step with diagrams and photos which makes it very easy to follow. Its a very comprehensive book on this subject and I would recommend it to an enthusiastic beginner right through to the more accomplished crafter. -- Karen Painter * Customer Review *March 17 Master the art of Japanese stitch-resist dyeing through both traditional and more innovative techniques of stitching and staining fabric. This book guides you through the process starting with detailed explainations of how to create patterns with stitches and offering helpful photos of each finished effect. It contains all the information you need to get started, while its inspiring content ensures that it will remain a fruitful resource as you become an experiened textile artist. * Sew *A very technical book, which is also very informative. I would recommend it to students genuinely interested in Shibori and dyeing techniques. There is lots of imagery to inspire and whet the appetite. Written in a somewhat prescriptive manner which helps students to learn the techniques precisely and leaving room for further exploration. As always, excellent photography by Paul Bricknell adds value. Jane Callender brings her many years experience with this technique to bear in a way that will enable much learning to take place, for students of little or no experience and also for those in the know! I love the recipe charts, these make it all much easier to digest. -- Valerie Hughes * Customer Review *This book is a very informative & inspiring guide to the Japanese art of Shibori. It is well illustrated both with photos & diagrams. The results are stunning but the book guides you through the processes so that you feel good results are achievable even for a beginner. Shibori does not need a lot of specialist equipment & I think anyone with an interest in textiles would find this a very useful addition to their bookshelf -- Nicola Urmenyi * Customer Review *Although on first look the book looks very complicated however after reading the book the instructions are very clear and precise with handy little tips -- Jennifer Brain * Customer Review *Very informative book with lots of photos to guide you through this embroidery craft, I'm looking forward to trying this out for the first time! -- Donna Hall * Customer Review *Very comprehensive book on many aspects of this craft. At first look the book seemed quite complicated but once I started reading about this fascinating craft I now can't wait to get started. There are chapters on the history of Shibori. Plenty on the different types of stitching and dye patterns and a lovely section about natural dyes and how to recipes for them I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in this craft or anyone looking for a different craft to try -- Sharon Raglan * Customer Review *Table of ContentsWhat is shibori? 6 About this book 8 Shibori tradition 10 Stitch-resist techniques 14 Fabric preparation 15 The stitch-resist process 18 Stitching on a single layer 18 Mokume shibori 20 Blocks and stripes 24 Creating simple pattern 26 Double needles 31 Stitching with binding and capping 32 Capping 34 Oversewing 35 Oversewn shapes 37 Introducing the fold 39 Curves on the fold 40 One fold seam 43 Double fold 44 Shapes on the fold 46 Motif development 48 The versatile grid 55 The stitch grid 58 Folding on the grid 62 Two for the effort of one 65 Machined resist folds 66 Machined resists: dots, stripes and shapes 72 Machined resists using concertina folds 75 Wrapped pattern 82 Itajime shibori 86 Binding and capping to a core 92 Capping with plastic 94 Cores and reserved grounds 95 Chikuwa shibori 98 Dip-dyeing 100 Applying indigo with a pipette 103 Shirokage shibori 104 Appliqué shibori 108 Hotaru shibori 113 Degumming 116 Knots 118 Buffers 120 Pulling up 122 Creating pattern 124 Pattern in form 125 Traditional karamatsu 126 Takewaku 128 Traditional linked flower 130 Hemp leaf pattern 133 Planning pattern 136 Composite design for pattern 140 Dyes 142 Dipping into magical water: indigo 143 Natural chemical vat 144 Synthetic indigo vat 145 Natural organic vats 146 Indigo dyeing procedure 148 Indigo vat considerations 149 Indigo recipe charts 150 Other useful recipes 151 Indigo dyeing tips 152 Natural dyes 153 Iron rust 158 Cold water fibre-reactive dyes 161 Shibori equipment 166 Health and safety 168 Glossary 169 Gallery 170 Index 175 Biography 176

I have loved Priscilla's work for years, even to the point of driving to Thirsk at literally the opposite end of the country for a half-day workshop, years ago when I was able. Those lucky people in the north of England! I used to love her fabric collages on canvas, but this book is about her lovely ethereal textile sculptures, using humble materials and transforming them into the most beautiful works of art. She is a very generous person, detailing every step needed to create these pieces for ourselves, and a bonus is that she is in the UK, so there isn't the usual frustration of not being able to acquire supplies - for the most part. Yet another bonus is that her publisher has not given in to the latest trend of grey text and pale, barely there illustrations, as seems de rigeur in some contemporary textile books. In do-it-yourself projects, Jessica first helpfully explains the basics of materials; she teaches you how to pick the right fabric, what tools to use, where to source materials, what types of wire or beads to use and terminology. Taking influences from existing couture designs, she then shows you how to execute these learned techniques onto your own clothes. This book is perfect for fashion students, textile artists, and those who want a more unique look to their clothes.Trade Review‘Perfect for fashion students, textile artists, and those who want a more unique look to their clothes.' * SEW Region Magazine *'A top-flight lesson in customising your own clothes' -- Popular Patchwork'A lustrous medley of achievable embellishments designed to help you raise your stitching game.
