World Wisdom Books Children of the Tipi: Life in the Buffalo Days
Book SynopsisWhat was it like to grow up in the world of the pre-reservation Plains Indians before the coming of the white settlers? Prior to our modern era of television, video games, and computers how did American Indian children live, learn, and play? In this beautifully illustrated book, award-winning author, Michael Oren Fitzgerald, combines stunning photographs and simple quotations by Indian chiefs and elders to explain to today's youth what life would have been like growing up on the American plains. Children of the Tipi includes sections on boys and girls at play, camp life, and the important role of parents and grandparents. It features historical sepia photographs of children at work and play, as well as detailed color photographs of their toys, tools, and everyday objects.Trade ReviewThis gem showcases the traditional life of the Plains Indians who resist[ed] the white encroachment" the longest. Although the tribes included had varied cultures, Fitzgerald focuses on two common themes: moral character and the sacred quality of virgin Nature." Categorized under headings such as Mothers," Girls at Play," Boys Love Bows and Arrows," Daily Camp Life," Music and Dance," Living in Nature," and The Olden Days Have Vanished," each section is generously illustrated with sepia-toned archival photos. Quotes from important members of the tribes, people who had experienced firsthand or learned the traditional ways from elders, make up most of the text. Some of the quotes seem tangential at times. Others have been simplified for the intended audience, but they are not identified. The images are carefully positioned, and spot color photos of cultural artifacts add detail to each topic. The concluding pages, ...But Many Traditions Live On," switch to color pictures of modern children participating in traditional activities. For the art alone, this will be a useful addition. School Library Journal Michael [Fitzgerald] has helped to preserve the spiritual traditions of the Crow Sun Dance and he has helped to show us the wisdom of the old-timers." -- Thomas Yellowtail, Crow medicine man and Sun Dance chief Michael Fitzgerald has heard the poignant narratives of the American Indian people, and has lived among the Crow people for extended periods of time since 1970. He has studied American Indian religious traditions on the earth, among the people, in ceremonies and family gatherings. We thank Fitzgerald for his deep-seated appreciation, honor, and respect for American Indian culture, its religion, language, and lifeways." -- Janine Pease, founding president of the Little Big Horn College, and National Indian Educator of the Year I greatly appreciate the recovery work that Fitzgerald is doing, work that makes available for the classroom and popular use texts that have been all but buried in libraries." -- Stephen Brandon, University of New Mexico "Children of the Tipi: Life in the Buffalo Days" is a signature edition of collected quotations and sayings of North American Plains members of different tribes plus a stunning array of historic, rare sepia and white photographs of Native Americans of the Plains taken before 1904. Michael Oren has edited some of the proverbs and quotations, but the impact of the wisdom is unmitigated. Here are pictures of herds of buffalo, mothers and children in beaded cradleboards, Indian boys and girls at play with corn husk dolls and bows and arrows, and whole tribes riding horses pulling travois laden with buffalo hide tens and camp supplies. Here also are photos of bowls, spoons, corn, meat drying racks, pottery, jewelry, and rugs, and their making. All pictures are further explained in quotations of words from documented Native American individuals, with much guidance and valuable life messages contained in each utterance. The last few pages show modern color photos of Native American children of today, some still in special tribal dress. "Children of the Tipi: Life in the Buffalo Days" is a fascinating window into the past of North America's many Plains Native American tribes, sure to be enjoyed by children ages 4-8 and their parents, caretakers, and educators Midwest Book Review

World Wisdom Books The Compassionate Warrior: Abd el-Kader of
Book SynopsisA brilliant military strategist, superb horseman, statesman, philosopher, Muslim hero ...Emir Abdel Kader (1808-1883) was an international celebrity in his own time, known for his generosity and kindness even towards enemies. Today he is recognized as one of the noblest leaders of the 19th century and a pioneer in interfaith dialogue. This fascinating biography of the heroic Arab who led the resistance to the French conquest of Algeria, endured betrayal and imprisonment, and in 1860, in Syria, saved thousands of innocent people from mob violence brings a vital message for our times.Trade Review"The Compassionate Warrior: Abd el-Kader of Algeria" by award-winning children's author Elsa Marston is the 184 page biography of a 19th Century leader, an Arab hero who led the fight in Algeria against opposing French forces. Abd el-Kader (1807-1883) was especially known for his ability as a military strategist and Muslim political leader. What is less well known is his that in 1860 he was responsible for saving thousands of Christians from Syrian mob violence which earned him international recognition from Abraham Lincoln, Pope Pius IX, and Napoleon III. Enhanced with a section of period photography, "The Compassionate Warrior: Abd el-Kader of Algeria" is especially recommended for young readers ages 13 to 16 and would make a significant and highly valued addition to both school and community library biography collections. Midwest Book Review Such is the history of the man for whom our town is named. A scholar, a philosopher, a lover of liberty; a champion of his religion, a born leader of men, a great soldier, a capable administrator, a persuasive orator, a chivalrous opponent; the selection was well made, and with those pioneers of seventy years ago, we do honor the Shaykh." -- Elkader High School, Elkader, Iowa, class of 1915 "This book introduces us to a true Muslim hero, a man who combined the best qualities of a freedom fighter and a peacemaker. Often called the George Washington of Algeria, the Emir Abd el-Kader led his people in a long fight to resist the French conquest and colonization of their country... Elsa Marston's excellent biography presents [Abd el-Kader's] legacy as a model for young Muslims today ... and for non-Muslims who are not exposed to enough Muslim voices of reason and compassion." -- Barbara Petzen, Director, Middle East Connections This clear and accessible biography will provide young readers with a valuable portrait of the Emir Abd el-Kader, who was so admired in 19th-century America. It is an admirable contribution to the understanding of the encounters between Muslims and Christians in the age of colonialism." -- Carl W. Ernst, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, author of How to Read the Qur'an and Teachings of Sufism At a time when negative stereotypes dominate the public perception of Islam and Muslims, our young people are sorely in need of positive role models who embody the highest ideals of what it means to live a life of dignity and purpose. Marston has filled that void with this gripping narrative of the life of Emir Abd el-Kader, a towering figure who inspires us all to a greater sense of humanity and justice no matter what religion we may practice." -- Robert F. Shedinger, Luther College, author of Was Jesus a Muslim? Abd el-Kadera man of principle, Muslim spiritual leader, diplomat, Arab luminaryled a rich and engaged life, despite decades of exile. This Algerian hero's story provides a fascinating window into the history of the nineteenth century, reflecting social and religious values and the tumultuous political times, and helping us make connections between France's brutal colonial policies, the Algerians' valiant resistance, and one leader's dignified and powerful struggle for justice. Marston's is an important contribution to youth literature, and will doubtless be a truly lasting one." -- Zeina Azzam, Georgetown University, Director of Educational Outreach, Center for Contemporary Arab Studies The special merit of Marston's very beautiful book is that the virtues and human qualities of Abd el-Kader play a central role in her story. In bringing this story to American youth, the author is offering them the chance to discover not only the values of mercy and peace within Islam, but also the life of a person who completely embodied those values. This book is not only a beautiful narrative that is based on solid documentation, but it is above all a useful book for our children who are going to inherit a world which is in urgent need of mercy and peace." -- Ahmed Bouyerdene, author of Emir Abd el-Kader: Hero and Saint of Islam Award-winning author Elsa Marston's books about the Middle East are often categorized as 'juvenile fiction and non-fiction.' However, The Compassionate Warrior, like most of her work, is a piece of solid scholarship, engagingly narrated, that will also have great appeal for adults. The Emir Abd el-Kader is an inspirational figure from Algerian history who deserves to be better known, and this exceptional book is a welcome contribution to that cause." -- Laurence Michalak, University of California, Berkeley Elsa Marston's biography illuminates the extraordinary story of Emir Abd el-Kader. This 19th century hero was tireless in his efforts to protect innocent lives and the honor of Islam. His example is an inspiration for us all." -- Jacqueline Jules The Compassionate Warrior provides us with a rich opportunity to learn about the life and teachings of a prominent Muslim spiritual teacher who resisted French colonialism. Not being content with returning violence for violence, Emir Abd el-Kader also protected Syrian Christians at a later point in his life... This volume is highly recommended for all who seek to learn about spiritual ways of responding to the traumas of the contemporary world." -- Omid Safi, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, author of Memories of Muhammad: Why the Prophet Matters In her engaging biography, the author shows well how Emir Abd el-Kader, head of a religious order and a fighter against colonial intrusions, preached tolerance and coexistence among communities, as was evident of his defense of the downtrodden during the exceptional Damascus riots of 1860. It is good of the author to bring to light the tolerance of a brave and compassionate hero who was needed then and is needed now as a model of leadership." -- Leila Fawaz Tufts University, author of An Occasion for War: Mount Lebanon and Damascus in 1860 In Elsa Marston's story of Emir Abd el-Kader we learn about the character of a man who was regularly faced with difficult decisions. In his journey, we see that being a warrior does not always mean going to war, but can also involve simply fighting for what is right. We witness the heroism that lies in human nature, even during the horror of battle, and the compassion that makes heroism possible. There is no avoiding the strong sense of justice that permeates all of his actions, and that that commitment to justice is deeply informed by his faith and spirituality. The remarkable nature of his story only highlights the importance of being true to one's convictions. His story is both awe-inspiring and inspirational." -- Hussein Rashid, Hofstra University, associate editor of Religion Dispatches magazine It is not very often that we readers and teachers come across a book that reveals so much history and biography in such an engaging and compelling way. Although the life of the great Algerian freedom fighter of the nineteenth century is the central focus of the book, the story also features French and North African colonial history, Christian-Muslim relations, and European politics. This book is an excellent vehicle for young people to explore a fast-moving story of heroic resistance to power, of nobility in times of war, of famous people and trying times, while all along learningand probably enjoyinghistory, ethics, cross-cultural relations, and the inner workings of Muslim societies." -- Roger Gaetani editor of Introduction to Sufism: The Inner Path of Islam and A Spirit of Tolerance: The Inspiring Life of Tierno Bokar, former teacher and developer of educational materials Abd el-Kader, who fought for nearly two decades against occupation and oppression, refused the oppression of others, and believed that despite all our differences, we were brothers and sisters in humanity. His many battles, as a resistance fighter, as a prisoner, as an intellectual, and as a believer, embodied this simple and yet revolutionary idea. His message, in a world with more interaction than ever before, is not only still relevant, but key for us to preserve our ability to coexist and to work together for a better future. I think he is more needed today than in the 19th century." -- Majed Bamya, descendant of Abd el-Kader, diplomat and social activist

From the Aztecs of the city of Tenochtitlan to the Mississippians who built Cahokia to the Inuit of the arctic and the Taino of the Caribbean. Then there are Spanish, French, English, and other Europeans who invaded in the 1500s, the enslaved Africans forcibly brought to North American shores, and millions more, from all around the world. This is a story of creation and destruction, migration, exploration, conquest, wars, alliances, trade, governments, railroads, mutinies, panning for gold, invention, and art. It includes terrible injustices and amazing movements toward equality and freedom. And so much more. So unfold the book and immerse yourself in the vast tapestry that is North American history.Trade Review"North America as a fold-out graphic history presents a mind-boggling amount of information in a creative, imaginative way that often challenges our perceptions." * Armadillo Magazine *"Using a large timeline format, this unique book tells the history of North America over the past 13,000 years. Notably, this title covers a lot of information. Each spread contains many important historical events from all over the continent … Along with the plethora of information, there are many detailed illustrations for readers to explore....The thick pages are actually one long piece that unfolds into one eight-foot long page." * School Library Journal *"Along with using careful, respectful language when referring to Native groups and ‘enslaved people’, Albee highlights women." * Kirkus Reviews *"One of the most uniquely-designed books I’ve ever seen. I know kids are going to love folding out an eight-foot continuous work of art filled with facts." * Mr Schu Reads *"This book is not a story but a fold-out timeline that is about 6 feet in length! Brimming with information and will probably take several readings to really see everything on each page." * Youth Services Book Review *“Albee manages to condense history to an 8 foot double sided timeline. I wasn’t expecting this when I opened the book and it kept unfolding ... A book to pore over and read and come back to read some more." * Kid Lit Frenzy *"North America lives up to the high expectations we have for publications from What on Earth Books … The construction of the book is brilliant and simple. You can spread it out, getting a bird's eye view of our shared history or you can flip the pages like a normal book and narrow your view to just a few hundred years. The painful and shameful parts of history are not sugar-coated (though they are age-appropriate). Slavery, residential schools, and 'European Invaders' are all called what they are. North America does not read like history books from my childhood: it is interesting and honest." * Glass of Wine, Glass of Milk *"Visually and physically experience the unfolding of history with an articulate and thorough timeline. This book has the ‘wow’ factor and is beyond spectacular." * Wandering Bookseller *"Make plenty of space for this one because you'll want to unfold the 8 feet of history that is inside. Each page moves steadily through the graphic timeline of North America. Authors use pictures and descriptions to teach about what life was like from 10,000 BCE to invasions and slavery." * Nerdy Book Club *"Created in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, the graphic novel style illustrations by William Exley coupled with Albee’s signature pithy, accessible text results in an engrossing, visually stunning reference book for both home and classroom use." * Word Spelunking *

Peter Lang AG Teaching history to face the world today:
Book SynopsisThis book develops the challenges that history teaching must face as a curricular subject at the beginning of the 21st century. These challenges are related, both to new epistemological approaches in history education, and also to the development of new activities, active-learning methodologies, and historical thinking competencies. In terms of new approaches, this book suggests activities regarding invisible topics such as social and economic impacts in history, inequalities, church and science, gender equality, power and violence, prosecuted by justice, peasantry and the urban world, family and daily life, terror or travelers and their cross-currents. Regarding the activities, the incidence of new technologies in social relations and the effects of globalization is very remarkable for our students. The authors highlight the need for changes in teaching and learning history. Table of ContentsTable of contents – Acknowledgements - List of contributors - No future?
The paradigm shift towards the focus on competence training calls for new research regarding the processes of historical thinking and learning as well as the complex interaction between players, media and concepts of history as a school subject. What concepts do teenagers have of a successful history lesson? How do expertise, didactic methodology and professional knowledge of teachers interact? Which possibilities does a didactic of archeology offer? Detailed analyses focus on separate aspects of the teaching process. However, several internal interrelations arise between the research projects. For instance, the function of language in history lessons is highlighted from multiple perspectives. Not least, the fields of conflicts of normative claims which history as a school subject is exposed to need to be charted.
