Chelsea House Publishers Captain James Cook
Book SynopsisJames Cook, son of a farm laborer and onetime shopkeeper's apprentice, became one of England's greatest explorers. After learning his trade as a seafarer in the Royal Navy, he commanded three epic voyages that took him around the world twice and from the Antarctic to the Arctic. His many discoveries included the Great Barrier Reef of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands. His exploration of the South Pacific added immeasurably to the geography of that region, and his rigorous insistence on a diet intended to prevent diseases like scurvy served as a model for generations of captains. On his final voyage, Cook was stabbed to death during the season of war in Hawaii. In ""Captain James Cook"", learn how this daring explorer charted far-flung regions of the globe.

Information Age Publishing From a Gadfly to a Hornet: Academic Freedom,
Book SynopsisWe examine Hart’s peripatetic career as teacher, editor, journalist, lecturer, and public philosopher. It is biographical as well as an intellectual history of a fascinating character and prolific author. Our goal is to resurrect Hart's intellectual life in order to more deeply understand the significant isuues he not only confronted, but endured These issues primarily include academic freedom and humanizing education, with their direct links to community organizing and Danish folk schools-themes that run throughout the book. Instead of seeing Hart’s intellectual life as a cautionary tale against forceful criticism, we offer a view consistent with Hart: we should embrace the “full and frank” sense of academic freedom in order to demonstrate a truly democratic mode of associated living in universities and civic communities. Respecting different views should not mean mollifying critique. The opposite, in fact, is in keeping with our view of the open exchange of ideas characteristic of free societies and legitimate institutions of higher education. Other theme of significance in this book include the status of the social foundations in teacher education, social welfare, pacifism, community organizing, the broader purpose of schools and universities in the U.S., and Hart's commitment to adult education via Danish folk schools and rural community living. The politics of teacher education are legion, and this was no less so when Hart began his career in the early twentieth century. Debates were had about the degree to which normal schools, as two?year teacher training sites, should broaden their technical scope to include the liberal arts. This is the distinction between teacher training and teacher education. Those in favor of classroom management and efficient controls or methods for dispensing curriculum faced criticism from those who thought schools should be embryotic spaces for individual and democratic growth. Hart was clearly on the side of individual and democratic growth and this meant, in part, less order, less routine, and less bureaucratic imposition of standards from bureaucratic hierarchies. Positively, it meant engaging in debates that challenge students to think differently than they have ever thought before. As we show in the following pages, Hart was enormously successful at challenging ideas...and many people would rather not be challenged. As we noticed above, this position results in demonstrating a ""full and frank"" enactment of academic freedom.

Taylor & Francis Teaching History with Film
Book SynopsisTeaching History with Film provides a fresh, engaging, and clear overview of teaching with film to effectively enhance social studies instruction. Using cases of experienced teachers to illustrate accomplished history teaching through movies, this text provides pre- and in-service teachers with ideas for implementing film-based lessons in their own classrooms and offers a deeper understanding of the thorny issues involved in using film to teach history. The second edition is completely revised and updated including: two entirely new case studies; a new chapter focusing on using international film and incorporating a more global view in the classroom; and additional material on using film to tackle difficult and controversial issues; as well as updates to all of the cases. Each section of the book focuses on how teachers can effectively support the development of studentsâ historical film literacy through topics such as using film to develop interpretive skills, to exTrade Review‘Film gives the history teacher rich opportunity to investigate stories of the past as contestable interpretations, but this is not a simple task. This book provides real help in this mission by providing a practical blend of theory, analysis and teaching program exemplars. This 2nd edition is up-dated and the addition of chapters on foreign films and difficult histories give currency and an international focus and appeal. A must for teachers across all stages of education who wish to motivate, engage and inspire today’s visually-orientated students.’ —Debra Donnelly is Senior Lecturer and Program Coordinator for History Education at University of Newcastle ‘The significance of the 2nd edition of Teaching History with Film goes beyond introducing history educators to the potential and provisos for teaching with the increasing number of historical feature films and documentaries—including foreign films—that are consumed everyday as part of our cultural curriculum.
