World Wisdom Books Children of the Tipi: Life in the Buffalo Days

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat was it like to grow up in the world of the pre-reservation Plains Indians before the coming of the white settlers? Prior to our modern era of television, video games, and computers how did American Indian children live, learn, and play? In this beautifully illustrated book, award-winning author, Michael Oren Fitzgerald, combines stunning photographs and simple quotations by Indian chiefs and elders to explain to today's youth what life would have been like growing up on the American plains. Children of the Tipi includes sections on boys and girls at play, camp life, and the important role of parents and grandparents. It features historical sepia photographs of children at work and play, as well as detailed color photographs of their toys, tools, and everyday objects.Trade ReviewThis gem showcases the traditional life of the Plains Indians who resist[ed] the white encroachment" the longest. Although the tribes included had varied cultures, Fitzgerald focuses on two common themes: moral character and the sacred quality of virgin Nature." Categorized under headings such as Mothers," Girls at Play," Boys Love Bows and Arrows," Daily Camp Life," Music and Dance," Living in Nature," and The Olden Days Have Vanished," each section is generously illustrated with sepia-toned archival photos. Quotes from important members of the tribes, people who had experienced firsthand or learned the traditional ways from elders, make up most of the text. Some of the quotes seem tangential at times. Others have been simplified for the intended audience, but they are not identified. The images are carefully positioned, and spot color photos of cultural artifacts add detail to each topic. The concluding pages, ...But Many Traditions Live On," switch to color pictures of modern children participating in traditional activities. For the art alone, this will be a useful addition. School Library Journal Michael [Fitzgerald] has helped to preserve the spiritual traditions of the Crow Sun Dance and he has helped to show us the wisdom of the old-timers." -- Thomas Yellowtail, Crow medicine man and Sun Dance chief Michael Fitzgerald has heard the poignant narratives of the American Indian people, and has lived among the Crow people for extended periods of time since 1970. He has studied American Indian religious traditions on the earth, among the people, in ceremonies and family gatherings. We thank Fitzgerald for his deep-seated appreciation, honor, and respect for American Indian culture, its religion, language, and lifeways." -- Janine Pease, founding president of the Little Big Horn College, and National Indian Educator of the Year I greatly appreciate the recovery work that Fitzgerald is doing, work that makes available for the classroom and popular use texts that have been all but buried in libraries." -- Stephen Brandon, University of New Mexico "Children of the Tipi: Life in the Buffalo Days" is a signature edition of collected quotations and sayings of North American Plains members of different tribes plus a stunning array of historic, rare sepia and white photographs of Native Americans of the Plains taken before 1904. Michael Oren has edited some of the proverbs and quotations, but the impact of the wisdom is unmitigated. Here are pictures of herds of buffalo, mothers and children in beaded cradleboards, Indian boys and girls at play with corn husk dolls and bows and arrows, and whole tribes riding horses pulling travois laden with buffalo hide tens and camp supplies. Here also are photos of bowls, spoons, corn, meat drying racks, pottery, jewelry, and rugs, and their making. All pictures are further explained in quotations of words from documented Native American individuals, with much guidance and valuable life messages contained in each utterance. The last few pages show modern color photos of Native American children of today, some still in special tribal dress. "Children of the Tipi: Life in the Buffalo Days" is a fascinating window into the past of North America's many Plains Native American tribes, sure to be enjoyed by children ages 4-8 and their parents, caretakers, and educators Midwest Book Review

This is a story of creation and destruction, migration, exploration, conquest, wars, alliances, trade, governments, railroads, mutinies, panning for gold, invention, and art. It includes terrible injustices and amazing movements toward equality and freedom. And so much more. So unfold the book and immerse yourself in the vast tapestry that is North American history.Trade Review"North America as a fold-out graphic history presents a mind-boggling amount of information in a creative, imaginative way that often challenges our perceptions." * Armadillo Magazine *"Using a large timeline format, this unique book tells the history of North America over the past 13,000 years. Notably, this title covers a lot of information. Each spread contains many important historical events from all over the continent … Along with the plethora of information, there are many detailed illustrations for readers to explore....The thick pages are actually one long piece that unfolds into one eight-foot long page." * School Library Journal *"Along with using careful, respectful language when referring to Native groups and ‘enslaved people’, Albee highlights women." * Kirkus Reviews *"One of the most uniquely-designed books I’ve ever seen. I know kids are going to love folding out an eight-foot continuous work of art filled with facts." * Mr Schu Reads *"This book is not a story but a fold-out timeline that is about 6 feet in length! Brimming with information and will probably take several readings to really see everything on each page." * Youth Services Book Review *“Albee manages to condense history to an 8 foot double sided timeline. I wasn’t expecting this when I opened the book and it kept unfolding ... A book to pore over and read and come back to read some more." * Kid Lit Frenzy *"North America lives up to the high expectations we have for publications from What on Earth Books … The construction of the book is brilliant and simple. You can spread it out, getting a bird's eye view of our shared history or you can flip the pages like a normal book and narrow your view to just a few hundred years. The painful and shameful parts of history are not sugar-coated (though they are age-appropriate). Slavery, residential schools, and 'European Invaders' are all called what they are. North America does not read like history books from my childhood: it is interesting and honest." * Glass of Wine, Glass of Milk *"Visually and physically experience the unfolding of history with an articulate and thorough timeline. This book has the ‘wow’ factor and is beyond spectacular." * Wandering Bookseller *"Make plenty of space for this one because you'll want to unfold the 8 feet of history that is inside. Each page moves steadily through the graphic timeline of North America. Authors use pictures and descriptions to teach about what life was like from 10,000 BCE to invasions and slavery." * Nerdy Book Club *"Created in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, the graphic novel style illustrations by William Exley coupled with Albee’s signature pithy, accessible text results in an engrossing, visually stunning reference book for both home and classroom use."

The paradigm shift towards the focus on competence training calls for new research regarding the processes of historical thinking and learning as well as the complex interaction between players, media and concepts of history as a school subject. What concepts do teenagers have of a successful history lesson? How do expertise, didactic methodology and professional knowledge of teachers interact? Which possibilities does a didactic of archeology offer? Detailed analyses focus on separate aspects of the teaching process. However, several internal interrelations arise between the research projects. For instance, the function of language in history lessons is highlighted from multiple perspectives. Not least, the fields of conflicts of normative claims which history as a school subject is exposed to need to be charted.
