Beacon Press Faith Ed Teaching about Religion in an Age of
Book SynopsisAn intimate cross-country look at the new debate over religion in the public schools A suburban Boston school unwittingly started a firestorm of controversy over a sixth-grade field trip. The class was visiting a mosque to learn about world religions when a handful of boys, unnoticed by their teachers, joined the line of worshippers and acted out the motions of the Muslim call to prayer. A video of the prayer went viral with the title “Wellesley, Massachusetts Public School Students Learn to Pray to Allah.” Charges flew that the school exposed the children to Muslims who intended to convert American schoolchildren. Wellesley school officials defended the course, but also acknowledged the delicate dance teachers must perform when dealing with religion in the classroom.Courts long ago banned public school teachers from preaching of any kind. But the question remains: How much should schools teach about the world’s religions? Answ

University of Minnesota Press Mothers United
Book SynopsisAn intimate and inspiring account of immigrant Latina mothers fighting for better schools for their children.Trade Review"Andrea Dyrness has produced an intimate, persuasive ethnography of a new, unexpected ‘learning site’ beyond the school walls. In Mothers United, we see the deft, sensitive hand of a genuinely ‘collaborative ethnographer’ working as a democratic, cultural broker/teacher/learner. I haven’t seen a better portrayal of activist ethnographic practice in the literature." —Douglas Foley, University of Texas, Austin "Mothers United is a brilliant example of how educational ethnography can illuminate the complex workings of school reform, parental agency and school engagement, and participatory action research for school change and social justice. Andrea Dyrness superbly illustrates how social injustice is reproduced in even the most well-intentioned and social justice-oriented school change movements." —Sofia Villenas, Cornell University"Dyrness’ excellent research reminds us of the importance of ethnographic work—the kind of research that probes deeply into the beliefs and actions of individuals, and the importance of giving legitimate voice to those individuals most often ignored."—Teachers College Record"Dyrness offers a stunning example of what critical ethnography can look like. The descriptions are rich and thick, drawing the reader in and offering ample support for her arguments."—Cultural Organizing "Dyrness has written an important book that will appeal to general audiences, educators, policymakers, and academics. Mothers United serves as a powerful example for enacting the community and social justice lived by Dyrness and the five women who collaborated on this research."—H-Net Reviews"Serves as a reminder that whenever one believes the fight for justice and equity has been won, it has only just begun."—Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences"Mothers United artfully combines the best aspects of the common concerns of multicultural educators. Mothers United should be added to a list of recommended books for multicultural educators to read, enjoy, and absorb. It definitely has the potential to challenge and transform."—International Journal of Multicultural Education "This book ultimately offers a compelling example of ethnographic, participatory research that would interest readers in a variety of fields. Certainly, educators and others, including anthropologists, educational anthropologists, and those with an interest in urban education, immigrants in education, and/or parental involvement must read this book."—Association of Mexican-American Educators Journal"Told with passion and realism, Mothers United is a significant book for anyone engaged in social change work through education and research, and a powerful example of how theoretically compelling and politically meaningful activist anthropology can be when practiced as committed participatory action research."—Anthropology and Education Quarterly"Dyrness offers the reader a thoughtful narrative, weaving together lively portraits of mothers, descriptions of the research process, and a discussion of research findings, and makes important connections from her study to relevant scholarly literature and current educational debates and issues."—Intercultural Education"Theoretically informed, empirically rich and offers methodological insights that are important for all researchers committed to a critical perspective."—Gender, Place, and CultureTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction: A Fragile Partnership 1. Beaufort Books The School Choice Roadmap
Book SynopsisTrade Review"A resource for parents who feel overwhelmed by the prospect of school choice. Campanella is the president of the annual public-awareness effort National School Choice Week, and his debut book offers a clear road map for choosing the best schools for one's children. Its initial chapters lay down fundamental conceptsthat parents are the experts on their own children, that what works for one child may not work for another, and that geographic location is a key factor in choosing a school. He then introduces six education options: traditional public schools, public charter schools, online public schools, public magnet schools, private schools, and home schooling. He provides basic descriptions of each choice, complete with quick summaries of management styles, how teachers are certified, and other factors. He also offers tables regarding each choice's geographic availability, although these lack some specificity. "My Takes" summarize the author's thoughts on each education option, such as "Private Schools can be unique, diverse, and more affordable than you might think." The author walks readers through his seven-step process (starting with "Think Back to Your Own Time in School" and "Identify Your Goals for Your Child"), providing questions for readers to ask themselves as they do their own research. Worksheets help to focus the discussion with a structured, methodical approach. The questions feel repetitious at times, but they effectively highlight important items. The final chapter asks readers to share their experiences with others, which sweetly concludes the main text. Readers may have questions that the seven-step plan doesn't directly address, but Campanella's lengthy "Frequently Asked Questions" section will likely help them. Overall, the author succeeds in his stated desire to remove politics from the school-choice discussion. However, more critical commentary would have been useful, as some descriptions feel overly idealistic. Throughout, Campanella includes supportive, inspiring quotations from parents and school administrators as well as examples of successful schools around the country; several regions are noticeably underrepresented, however. A straightforward and often useful companion for those on a school-choice journey." Kirkus Indies
