Jennifer Moon creatively explores the importance of this emerging topic and how assertiveness is linked to the process of learning and overall student development, critical thinking and academic achievement. Trade Review"Jennifer Moon, senior lecturer (research) at Bournemouth University in the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice, has written a very useful book for today’s higher education student on the topic of academic assertiveness. This text has, as its primary goal, being a useful guide for students who seek academic success, both socially and in the classroom, though using techniques presented in the book on academic assertiveness."—Review of Higher EducationUS:Ana Marie Cancelli Coastal Carolina Community College (College Student Success Facilitator)„"I strongly recommend this for publication. I find it very timely and very necessary. My institution chooses texts by committee and I would be more than happy to put this text into the mix of texts to consider"„I believe college student success courses could use it as a primary text and I think it would work well as a supplemetal text in English 111"Q. Also, I wanted to know what your thoughts are about the format and the last section Part 3 for Instructors teaching this course"I thought the format was just fine."I am used to receiving a supplemental instructor's manual, but if it would make the text more cost effective, I think a 3rd section for instructors would be just fine." Kristen Thomas, University of Akron, Academic AdvisorQ: . If the work is intended as a textbook, For which course(s) would it be most appropriate? "course most appropriate : Student Success Seminar b) supplemental text c) currently we are using "Becoming a Master Student" by David Ellis 2006"„OVERALL REACTION : a) I really like the concept, especially utilizing examples/scenarios which would lead to great teaching discussions. b) I think there is a place for a book like this c) I would call it "leading edge" because I am not familiar with one that is out there that deals with this topic. d) The potential shelf life 2-3 years maximum before a revision would be needed. I like the timeliness of this information because of the type of student coming to college""Yes I recommend the book and our committee that selects textbooks for our Student Success Seminar course would definitely consider using it.""All college students can benefit from this book, it offers them a fresh new perspective, one that shows them they can control their destiny if they are willing to learn important communication and "life skills" which are essential in the pursuit of higher education."Babrbara Doyle, Arkansas State University, Director of Assessement"This text approaches topics covered in most freshman orientation courses or study skills courses.""The topic is not affected by the passage of time. The material is not prone to become outdated. The tips and strategies provided would be timeless information for college students 50 years ago and 50 years in the future"UK:Kate Exley:University of Leeds" The rationale for such a book is convincing and there appears to be a growing need for study skills and study guidance books that can give a wide range of students speedy orientation to a more independent mode of study."Phil Race: Leeds Metroplitan University (Areas of specialty Assessment, learning and teaching in higher education) "Writing style seems fit-for-purpose – friendly and stimulating. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Parents and Their Childrens Schools
Book SynopsisThe role of parents in their children''s education is an issue of critical importance. Many of the changes currently underway in British schools have been justified on the grounds that they provide what parents want. But what do parents really want? And how have they reacted to the changes already introduced in the UK, such as increased parental choice, the National Curriculum, and standardized assessment? Parents and Their Children''s Schools is the first book to tackle this important issue in depth and will be important reading for all those involved in education. It presents the findings of a unique research study which looked directly at these questions. The study followed 150 children through Key Stage One (5-7 years) of the National Curriculum, culminating in the first standardized assessments of 7 year olds ever to take place in the UK. The book presents the views of their parents and teachers, obtained through regular in-depth interviews at crucial stages during thisTrade Review"Parental choice in education has become a focus of political interest. This important book uses research findings to discuss what parents want, and whether they see themselves as consumers of education, in a lively, readable and thought provoking way. Anyone interested in the role of parents in schools would benefit from reading it." Harvard University Press Testing Wars in the Public Schools
Book SynopsisDespite claims that written exams narrowed the curriculum, ruined children’s health, and turned teachers into automatons, once tests took root in American schools their legitimacy was never seriously challenged. William Reese puts today’s battles over standards and benchmarks into perspective by showcasing the history of the pencil-and-paper exam.Trade ReviewWilliam Reese takes the reader back to the first standardized test in public school in the city of Boston in 1845...This book is a major addition to the role of schools in American society. People familiar with the arguments for and against testing will find similar arguments being talked about in 1845. -- Kevin Winter * San Francisco Book Review *With Testing Wars in the Public Schools, Reese crafts a masterful examination of the roots of the testing culture in American education and the ramifications for administrators, teachers, and students. -- S. T. Schroth * Choice *As Testing Wars in the Public Schools shows, written student examinations have always been entwined with public schools in the United States, and have been required, praised, and resented for generations. In this lively book, William Reese reveals the debates over rote memorization, threats to health, and even the use and misuse of statistics that were common in the nineteenth century as well as in the twenty-first. This highly original and thoughtful book is well worth reading. -- Maris Vinovskis, University of MichiganWritten tests are the bête-noire of contemporary educational critics, who claim that the tests encourage a sterile and rote pedagogy. But in William Reese’s tale, they were originally part of reformers’ efforts to, yes, reform sterile and rote pedagogy! These stories—and a treasure-trove of other ones—come to life in this new look at the early years of American public schools. -- Jonathan Zimmerman, New York University

Princeton University Press Uneducated Guesses Using Evidence to Uncover
Book SynopsisChallenges what our policymakers thought they knew about education and education reform, from how to close the achievement gap in public schools to admission standards for top universities. This book uses statistical evidence to show why some of the widely held beliefs in education today - and the policies that have resulted - are wrong.Trade ReviewWinner of the 2014 AERA Division D Significant Contribution to Educational Measurement and Research Methodology Award, American Educational Research Association "[T]hought-provoking... He questions the anecdotal and statistical evidence that underpins many of today's education policies and reform efforts."--Library Journal "An absolutely absorbing book. Feels like a must for politicians, reformers, educators--math educators in particular."--Cut the Knot Insights "Renowned statistician and research scientist Howard Wainer applies the tools of his trade to answer a question that affects every American: What is wrong with our education system? ... Wainer pokes holes in almost every aspect of conventional education policy--college rankings, admissions, aptitude tests--including a scathing critique of No Child Left Behind."--Bruce Walsh, Metro "[Wainer's] overall message rings clear and true for much more than assessment: Policy that is formed without full analysis of the breadth of data available on a topic is policy that will fail."--Laurent Rigal, Education Gadfly "Tired of yelling at the TV when he saw news accounts of policy changes based on flawed evidence, Wainer uses his book to present evidence to help assess 11 such trends, including the entrance-exam-optional policies in many colleges and teacher evaluations based on student performance... Wainer applies more than statistical evidence to education policy; he also brings common sense to bear."--Maureen Downey, Atlanta Journal-Constitution "With its timely reminder that high stakes decisions often rely on anecdotes, laden with emotion, and that 'the plural of anecdote is not data,' Uneducated Guesses ought to be read by anyone who is concerned about the weaknesses (and wrong-headed assumptions) in current educational policies."--Glenn C. Altschuler, Tulsa World "I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in testing, especially for college admissions or advanced placement... Wainer is a gifted writer with a notable talent for analyzing and presenting data."--Bill Satzer, MAA Reviews "The book provides a model for the development of rational public education policies, something that America needs desperately."--Robert A. Bligh, Education Review "Educators and education policymakers interested in helping students realize their potential will benefit from reading Wainer's book because the implications reach beyond postsecondary school instruction. Teachers and administrators at all levels can follow the logic of Wainer's ideas as they seek to use evidenced-based pedagogical strategies in their classrooms."--Denise G. Rowman & Littlefield Chomsky on MisEducation
Book SynopsisIn this work, Noam Chomsky builds a larger understanding or our educational needs, starting with the changing role of schools today, and then broadening our view toward new models of public education for citizenship.Trade ReviewChomsky and Macedo provide a brilliant analysis of schooling that draws upon a language of critique and possibility that reclaims the notion of schooling as a public good and a democratic force. At a time when teachers, students, and public life in general are under assault by the juggernaut of commodification and capital accumulation, it is crucial that educators, parents, youth, and others be offered a language in which politics, power, justice, and social change become central to any notion of educational reform. Chomsky and Macedo's book fulfills this task with great courage and penetrating wisdom. This is a book that should be read by everyone interested in education and the crisis of democracy. -- Henry A. This book juxtaposes the experiences of mostly minority children of poverty and their teachers with an examination of high stakes testing policies and the loss of a comprehensive education to political dictates.Trade ReviewI know of no other book that so clearly shows how our fascination with testing, standards, and accountability fails miserably to deal with the daily realities of education and poverty in this country. High States provides a richly detailed picture of these realities and deserves to be read by anyone concerned with the educational lives of poor children. -- Michael W. Apple, John Bascom Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Policy Studies, University of Wisconsin, Madison; author, High Stakes represents the moral compass for school improvement that has been missing in the accountability discourse. High Stakes should be required reading for policy makers bent on equating school improvement with accountability measures. * Journal of Anthropological Research *A critical, passionate, firsthand account....The authors challenge the effectiveness of using standardized tests to make decisions in a school that lacks basic amenities and suffers from excessive student and teacher stress. * Library Journal *High Stakes is a poignant look at the reality of public schools today. * The Louisiana Weekly *...an excellent first hand account of the impact of testing ...could inspire teachers, administrators, and parents not just to accept the message of those who advocate for high stakes testing and not to feel powerless. -- Dr. Liz Keefe, University of New MexicoA book so compelling that it just might become a classic. * American School Board Journal *High Stakes: Poverty, Testing and Failure in American schools, by Dale and Bonnie Johnson, is exceptional. The authors graphically yet dispassionately document the incongruities and inequities of poverty and high stakes testing in American schools. The book is a gripping report of first hand experience coupled with thoughtful analysis. It should be read widely, particularly by policymakers. -- Peter Johnston, The University at AlbanyThis text reveals the detrimental impact of high-stakes standardized testing and other accountability measures on public schools serving poor communities. … New to the second edition is a chapter describing how accountability mandates have become the dominant influence in public education at all levels nationwide. * Reference and Research Book News *All of the graduate students in my educational psychology classes, many of whom are public school teachers, who read the first edition of this book called for every school board member, legislator, and taxpayer to read it. I felt the same way when I first read it. It deserves to be read widely, especially by policymakers. * PsycCRITIQUES *A unique and sobering case study of a single poor, rural school with many children left behind. * Future Survey *...offers a timely and important account of the current policy climate and of the unfortunate consequences it inflicts on disadvantaged children and their teachers. * Journal Of Children and Poverty, September 2007 *Table of ContentsChapter 1 The Realities of an Underfunded School Chapter 2 September: The Children We Teach Chapter 3 October: Regulating Teaching Chapter 4 November: Drugs, Poverty, and Test Scores Chapter 5 December: "Clamp Down" Chapter 6 January: Test Preparation-The Pace Quickens Chapter 7 February: Pep Rallies for Tests Chapter 8 March: Test-Day Traumas Chapter 9 April: Freedom to Teach and Learn Chapter 10 May: "I Don't Want to Spend My Time on Paperwork" Chapter 11 How Can We Build a Better Future? University Press of America Diversity High
Book SynopsisDiversity High offers special insight into school change and social transition in racially divided communities. It underlines the obvious notion that change is difficult and confirms that leadership in an academic environment matters in changing schools. Vandeyar and Jansen provide a thorough investigation allowing readers to distinguish second-order changes (changes to curriculum, staffing, culture, and leadership), from first-order changes, (changes in student complexion in de-racializing schools). The study demonstrates the non-linearity of reforms by capturing the dynamism of change in powerful photographic records ranging from origins to change (demonstrated through black and white to color pictures). Conveying complexity through the ways in which race, class and culture intersect to produce unintended consequences; this book is concise and expertly researched. Ultimately, Vandeyar and Jansen celebrate human agency over determinist structures at the center of change through their Table of ContentsPart 1 Foreword Chapter 2 Setting the Scene Chapter 3 Historical Portrait, 1953–1990 Chapter 4 Racial Fission, 1994–1997 Chapter 5 Early Euphoria, 1997–2000 Chapter 6 Settling in, 2001–2004 Chapter 7 Hitting the rocks, 2005–2006 Chapter 8 Colorful Shadows

Rlpg/Galleys Tuning the Rig
Book SynopsisTo tune the rig describes adjusting a ship''s rigging; the rig of a well-tuned boat allows the sails to function well. This task must be performed to ensure the best performance by the ship. Tuning the Rig takes that metaphor as a guide for Catholic educators and administrators, as well as for the larger church. It argues from a variety of perspectives rooted in the Catholic imagination that the rig constantly needs to be re-tuned to balance between visions of the church as teacher and learner. Why should this matter to Catholic educators? To Herron, our understanding of the church as learner is at the heart of our understanding of ourselves as disciples. One of the logical consequences of this era of baptismal consciousness is a rising awareness on the part of the laity that their task is not simply to pay, pray, and obey but to grow and journey in faith. Herron''s focus ranges from issues closely pertaining to Catholic schools to the larger questions of the Catholic imagination. The underlying thread, however, is the challenge of maintaining the richness of the Catholic imagination of tuning the rig in changing times and the ordinary life of the church.Trade Review…An exceptional job of communicating key challenges to Catholic Educators, providing purposeful examples to model through their imagination, dialogue and community of discipleship. It will be a must for my students. -- Dr. Gerald M. Hamilton Books School Why Would Anyone Do That to Kids
Book SynopsisThis book encourages readers to think about and discuss the purpose of education. It provides an opportunity to consider how the way in which purposes are framed has consequences for student-teacher relationships and teacher-administrator relationships. The author introduces a moral/ethical dimension into the consideration of purposesWhy would anyone do that to kids? This book suggests that failure to reflect on the purpose of education underlies the lack of impact of many education reform efforts. The author presents a fictional roundtable discussion of educational issues. The participants include teachers, school administrators, state politicians and bureaucrats, parents, community members, and business people. Trade ReviewFifty years of teaching students from elementary through graduate school has taught me that conversation, discussion, and dialogue can engage them in creating worthwhile educational experiences. I have found the same to be true in work with teachers, school leaders, professors, and diverse publics on key educational issues. I am glad to see in this book that Jeff Gregg advocates a similar perspective. Through creative fictionalized conversations, often drawn from exemplary ideas of insightful scholars, Gregg illustrates ways to reconstruct educational purposes. The continuous revision of educational purposes based on experiences of enacting them must infuse education at all levels. I encourage readers to extrapolate the ideas and exemplary conversations that they encounter in this book to their continuously changing experiences. I urge readers to pursue such conversation in order to overcome domination of private and public schooling by corporate-state elites and to represent authentic public interests and needs. As many different voices enter conversations about educational purposes, we must remember that student voices are essential. Jeff Gregg has provided a book that illustrates how all involved in schools or influence educational policy need to seriously discuss purposes, meanings, and consequences of what they do. Then, they need to enact their own conversations to fit the needs of their own unique situations. Engaging in such ongoing conversation is, in fact, the process of democratic education. -- William H. Schubert, Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at ChicagoSchool: Why Would Anyone Do That to Kids? reminds me why I have love affairs with books. Drawing on a rich intellectual history, simulated conversations teach us the importance of regularly examining the purposes of education and continually questioning the role of school in society. Jeff Gregg constructed a multifaceted conversation that includes broad philosophical positions, extracted from a wide range of educational theorists, and illustrates how such positions have informed educational policy. This depiction of educational history is easy to digest, fun to think about, and helpful to remember when generating forward-looking policies and practices. -- Theresa Thorkildsen, University of Illinois at ChicagoGregg has a lofty goal for this ambitious, creative book—to engage us in reflection on the ultimate educational question: “What is the purpose of school?” What makes the book tantalizingly different is that we are immersed in a rich dialogue of voices that extend from current reformers back to Thomas Jefferson and Horace Mann. We become participants in the centuries-old debates about why we send kids to school. -- Mike Rose, author of Why School?: Reclaiming Education for All of UsTable of ContentsPrefaceAcknowledgmentsChapter 1Chapter 2Chapter 3Chapter 4Chapter 5ReferencesAbout the Author
