Johns Hopkins University Press Downward Mobility
Book SynopsisHow do the stories we tell about money shape our economies?Beginning in the late eighteenth century, as constant growth became the economic norm throughout Europe, fictional stories involving money were overwhelmingly about loss. Novel after novel tells the tale of bankruptcy and financial failure, of people losing everything and ending up in debtor's prison, of inheritances lost and daughters left orphaned and poor. In Downward Mobility, Katherine Binhammer argues that these stories of ruin are not simple tales about the losers of capitalism but narratives that help manage speculation of capital's inevitable collapse. Bringing together contemporary critical finance studies with eighteenth-century literary history, Binhammer demonstrates the centrality of the myth of downward mobility to the cultural history of capitalismand to the emergence of the novel in Britain. Deftly weaving economic history and formal analysis, Binhammer reveals how capitalism requires the novel's complex techTable of ContentsList of Illustrations Acknowledgments Introduction 1. Rowman & Littlefield The United States and the Global Economy
Book SynopsisFinancial collapse. Global recession. The revival of free-market policies. Massive and increasing inequalities. Housing bubbles and record foreclosures. Severe strain in the European Union. Emergence of China and other major players on the international economic scene. Every day, media outlets bombard us with news and possible explanations for the financial, economic, and political crises. In The United States and the Global Economy, Frederick S. Weaver gives readers a concise introduction to the patterns of change in international financial and trade regimes since World War II in order to clarify recent global economic turmoil. Weaver has compiled a clear chronology of major events in the international economy to show how they have reflected and shaped changes in the domestic economy of the United States. Although U.S. dominance over the world economy is not as complete as it once was, U.S. domestic economic processes continue to have profound effects on global economic affairs. TheTrade ReviewWeaver provides a clear, concise, and easily-digestible description of key moments in US economic history and the economic concepts that underpin these events. His work is a boon to all undergraduates struggling through a course in international political economy and to those teaching them. -- Alexandra Guisinger, University of Notre DameHistory matters so we repeat it when we should and don't when we shouldn't. Weaver has done a great service by providing an accessible guide to recent US economic history (and its political drivers) in global context. -- Kevin Gallagher, Boston UniversityWeaver’s book makes a contribution to public understanding of a complex subject. It offers an alternative interpretation to the doctrinaire writings of some mainstream economists who celebrate the benefits of free trade, wealth creation, and consumer gains while downplaying the costs of dislocations, volatility, and instability. * H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online *To quickly get up to speed on today's global economy and its impact on the US, this interdisciplinary book is a good place to start. Its wide-ranging "Selected Readings and Websites" list will also help readers pursue specific topics of interest. Over the last 60 years, numerous international developments have affected the US's role in the global economy, and this volume focuses on how these events have shaped the US economy. Weaver (emer., Hampshire College) explains and analyzes the effects on the US of the emergence of the EU, OPEC policies, the Soviet Union's collapse, China's rise as the export superpower, and economic successes in South Korea, India, Brazil, and Southeast Asia. He examines the causes and consequences of the global crisis from the perspective of developed and developing countries, covering important themes such as the role of income distribution during this crisis; the global nature of the crisis; the systematic failure of the global financial systems; inadequacy of global governance institutions; and challenges presented by financial innovation. To make the book more accessible, Weaver provides readers with the vocabulary of key elements of international economic analysis and their interactions. A good supplement for international studies courses. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduate through professional audiences as well as general readers. * CHOICE *Explores the patterns of change in the international economy since World War II, focusing on the ways in which international events, issues, and relationships reflected and shaped changes to the U.S.economy. * Journal of Economic Literature *Weaver’s narrative of how the international economic order has changed since the end of the Second World War is often compelling and informative. The book is well paced and an easy read, giving readers without background knowledge in economic or international affairs a good starting point to understand the rapid changes in the international economy. Weaver has the ability to seamlessly define and discuss the sometimes confusing jargon of international economics and provides throughout the book helpful side notes that add to the narrative but do not unnecessarily distract the reader from the book’s core insights. * E-International Relations *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: The Twentieth Century Quest for a Stable International Economy Chapter 2: The U.S. Domestic Economy and the International Scene, 1945 to 1970s Chapter 3: U.S. Political Shifts and beyond Bretton Woods, 1970s to 1980s Chapter 4: The New International Economy and the Dissolution of U.S. Modern Times, 1970s to 1990s Chapter 5: The Triumph of Free-Market Global Capitalism, 1990s to 2007 Chapter 6: The Twenty-First Century Quest for a Stable International Economy Selected Readings

John Wiley and Sons Ltd Combatting Modern Slavery: Why Labour Governance
Book SynopsisOver the last decade, the world’s largest corporations – from The Coca Cola Company to Amazon, Apple to Unilever – have taken up the cause of combatting modern slavery. Yet, by most measures, across many sectors and regions, severe labour exploitation continues to soar. Corporate social responsibility is not working. Why? In this landmark book, Genevieve LeBaron lifts the lid on a labour governance regime that is severely flawed and limited. She takes a close-up look at the millions of corporate dollars spent on anti-slavery networks, NGO partnerships, lobbying for new transparency legislation, and investment in social auditing and ethical certification schemes, to show how such efforts serve to bolster corporate growth and legitimacy as well as government reputations, whilst failing to protect the world’s most vulnerable workers. To eradicate modern slavery and human trafficking in global supply chains a new approach is needed; one that confronts corporate power and profits, dismantles exploitative business models, and regulates the booming private industry of accounting firms, social auditors, and consultants that has emerged to ‘monitor’ and ‘enforce’ labour standards. Only worker-driven initiatives that uphold fundamental rights can protect workers in the contemporary global economy and make forced labour a thing of the past.Trade Review“‘LeBaron's book gives renewed focus to what business actors, civil society, and government need to do to in order to combat modern slavery. It is a highly recommended read for all those involved in the challenges of eradicating slavery.”Urmila Bhoola, Former UN Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of slavery“Combating Modern Slavery is a bold, deeply-empirical, even heroic work of moral social science by a brilliant and intrepid scholar. With original field work and a deep dive into the nature of supply chains, global labor governance regimes, audit methods practiced by actual companies, and the worst elements of labor exploitation among the most endangered people, this book is a sobering but moving explanation of the politics and the economics of the modern slavery crisis... In a world struck numb by a pandemic, this book warns us of what millions of the most vulnerable of laborers already face every day.”David W. Blight, Director, Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery and Abolition, Yale University, and author of the Pulitzer prize-winning Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom“We don’t need another hero, argues Genevieve LeBaron. Companies have long promised to sell ethically made products, but they have covered up and misdiagnosed forced labor. Combatting Modern Slavery lays out a readable critique and promising way forward.”Tim Bartley, Washington University in St Louis“A scorching critique of corporate-led efforts to address forced labor and trafficking that shines a spotlight on more promising, worker-driven initiatives for addressing exploitation in the global economy.”Janie Chuang, American University“An important and original analysis of ‘modern slavery’ and forced labour that does not shy away from asking difficult questions.”Samantha Currie, University of Liverpool “A lucid and provocative critique of the contemporary global labor governance regime.”American Journal of SociologyTable of Contents1 Who Does Labor Governance Work For? 2 Labor Exploitation in Global Supply Chains 3 Corporate Power and the State 4 The Recruitment Industry 5 The Enforcement Industry 6 Protecting 21st Century Workers

PublicAffairs Edible Economics: A Hungry Economist Explains the
Book SynopsisEdible Economics brings the sort of creative fusion that spices up a great kitchen to the often too-disciplined subject of economics For decades, a single, free-market philosophy has dominated global economics. But this intellectual monoculture is bland and unhealthy. Bestselling author and economist Ha-Joon Chang makes challenging economic ideas delicious by plating them alongside stories about food from around the world, using the diverse histories behind familiar food items to explore economic theory. For Chang, chocolate is a lifelong addiction, but more exciting are the insights it offers into postindustrial knowledge economies; and while okra makes Southern gumbo heart-meltingly smooth, it also speaks of capitalism’s entangled relationship with freedom. Myth-busting, witty, and thought-provoking, Edible Economics serves up a feast of bold ideas about globalization, climate change, immigration, austerity, automation, and why carrots need not be orange. It shows that getting to grips with the economy is like learning a recipe: when we understand it, we can adapt and improve it—and better understand our world.

Book Synopsis“Charles Sauer's Profit Motive is the Ronald Reagan of Economics Books.” —Grover Norquist president of Americans for Tax ReformMost businesses are driven to maximize profit, but what does this drive really mean in action? In Profit Motive: What Drives the Things We Do economist Charles Sauer makes the case that identifying your own and others’ “Profit Motives” provides the foundation for running a successful business, being an effective leader, a good consumer, and getting what you really want out of life. In this highly praised new treatise on economic behavior, Sauer examines how businesses make decisions in pricing and employment and how the search for long-term profit can mean adopting practices that may seem contrary to fundamental capitalist principles. Welcome to the land of Blah Blah Blah. The Problem: We talk so much that we don't think very well. They can't-and that's bad, because words have become our default thinking tool. The Solution: This book offers a way out of blah-blah-blah. It's called 'Vivid Thinking.'In Dan Roam's first acclaimed book, The Back of the Napkin, he taught readers how to solve problems and sell ideas by drawing simple pictures. Through Vivid Thinking, we can make the most complicated subjects suddenly crystal clear. Whether trying to understand a Harvard Business School class, or what went down in the Conan versus Leno battle for late-night TV, or what Einstein thought about relativity, Vivid Thinking provides a way to clarify anything.Through dozens of guided examples, Roam proves that anyone can apply this systematic approach, from leftbrain types who hate to draw to right-brainers who hate to write. Book SynopsisA forgotten book by one of history's greatest thinkers reveals the surprising connections between happiness, virtue, fame, and fortune.Adam Smith may have become the patron saint of capitalism after he penned his most famous work, The Wealth of Nations. But few people know that when it came to the behavior of individuals—the way we perceive ourselves, the way we treat others, and the decisions we make in pursuit of happiness—the Scottish philosopher had just as much to say. He developed his ideas on human nature in an epic, sprawling work titled The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Most economists have never read it, and for most of his life, Russ Roberts was no exception. But when he finally picked up the book by the founder of his field, he realized he’d stumbled upon what might be the greatest self-help book that almost no one has read.In How Adam Smith Can Change Your Life, Roberts examines Smith’s forgotten masterpiece, and finds a treasure trove of timeless, practical wisdom. Smith’s insights into human nature are just as relevant today as they were three hundred years ago. What does it take to be truly happy? Should we pursue fame and fortune or the respect of our friends and family? How can we make the world a better place? Smith’s unexpected answers, framed within the rich context of current events, literature, history, and pop culture, are at once profound, counterintuitive, and highly entertaining.

Berrett-Koehler What the U.S. Can Learn from China: An Open-Minded Guide to Treating Our Greatest Competitor as Our Greatest Teacher
Book SynopsisChina succeeded Japan as the world's second largest economy in 2010 many predict it will grow to be larger than the United States by 2020. Three decades ago, China was a rural economy with barely any exports. The rise of China presents the United States with a "Sputnik Moment," in the words of President Obama. Will we rise to the challenge as we did during the space race, or will we rationalize and scapegoat our way to explaining why we can't compete?Ann Lee provides an unvarnished assessment of Chinaâs political economy and governance structure, analyzing the sources of Chinaâs success and identifying lessons that can be applied by other governments regardless of ideology. As a Chinese-American who emigrated to the U.S. from Hong Kong at the age of seven, Lee is uniquely situated to help Americans understand how China sees its own society and how to adapt some Chinese practices to benefit the U. S. For example, the Chinese economy is designed to make the kind of unproductive and unrestrained financial speculation that has devastated much of the West impossible. Aspiring Chinese politicians have to pass tests to prove their competency to govern. The Chinese homicide rate is a fifth of what it is in the U.S. While not blind to Chinaâs shortcomings, Lee argues that rather than demonizing China, a more productive use of time and resources is to learn from this rising power in order to maximize the talent of millions of people.

This is the first book to pull together in once place detailed information about the 1% and the 99% in all realms of society, the causes and consequences of this deep inequality, and what can be done about it. The focus of the worldwide âœOccupyâ protests is creating a world that works for 99% of people and businesses, not just the richest and most powerful 1%. But who are the 99%? Who are the 1%? How extensive and systemic is inequality in different areas of society? What are its causes and consequence? How is inequality changing in our world? And what can be done about it? For many years Chuck Collins has been a top leader in studying, speaking about, and writing about these questions. In this book he brings together in one place, for the first time, information that has been widely scattered in many different articles, reports, and websites. He provides revealing and powerful information about inequality in all realms of todayâs world, including individual wealth and power, corporate wealth and power, media control, political influence, and other areas. He then describes the functioning of the âœWall Street Inequality Machineâ and describes how inequality wrecks everything we care about. And he tells how people and groups are pushing back against inequality and taking action to reduce inequality and create a world that works for the many and not just the few.
