    3 in stock

Book SynopsisChina is in the midst of transitioning from a manufacturing-based economy to one driven by innovation and knowledge. This up-to-date analysis evaluates China''s state-led approach to science and technology, and its successes and failures. In recent decades, China has seen huge investments in high-tech science parks, a surge in home-grown top-ranked global companies, and a significant increase in scientific publications and patents. Helped by state policies and a flexible business culture, the country has been able to leapfrog its way to a more globally competitive position. However, the authors argue that this approach might not yield the same level of progress going forward if China does not address serious institutional, organizational, and cultural obstacles. While not impossible, this task may well prove to be more difficult for the Chinese Communist Party than the challenges that China has faced in the past.Trade Review"This highly important work gives us insightful analysis founded on a tremendous depth of scholarship and interviews. It is the most comprehensive account of China's innovation system through a western lens."—Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, University of Alberta "Innovation in China offers a masterful account of China's innovation system, its working, and its impacts (for better and worse). A must read for those who care about innovation, China, or both." —Dan Breznitz, University of Toronto "The various aspects related to the effectiveness of China's industrial and innovation policy have long been debated and analysed, but have never been fully understood. Book SynopsisIt deals in a practical and reasonable way with many of the estimating problems which can arise where building and civil engineering works are carried out and to include comprehensive estimating data within the guidelines of good practice. The early part of the book has been completely rewritten to contain chapters useful to students and practitioners alike for the development of the estimating process resulting in the presentation of a tender for construction works. The second and major part of the book contains estimating data fully updated for the major elements in building and civil engineering work, including a new chapter on piling, and a wealth of constants for practical use in estimating. The estimating examples are based on the current edition of the Standard Method of Measurement for Building Works (SMM7). The comprehensive information on basic principles of estimating found in ''Spence Geddes'' are still as valid today as the first edition. In this edition the prevailing ratTrade Review'This is a very useful publication that is very clearly presented and easy to use. • Distributional Effects of Environmental and

Taylor & Francis Ltd Distributional Effects of Environmental and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisMany effects of environmental and energy policy are likely to disproportionately burden those with low income. First, it raises the price of fossil-fuel-intensive products that constitute a high fraction of low-income budgets (like gasoline, heating fuel and electricity). Second, the handout of pollution permits to firms provides value to those who own them. Third, low-income individuals may place more value on food and shelter than on improvements in environmental quality, so high-income individuals may get the most benefit of pollution abatement. Fourth, air quality improvements may raise the value of houses owned by landlords, rather than helping renters. These effects might all hurt the poor more than the rich. This book brings together the seminal economics literature that studies whether these fears are valid and whether anything can be done about them.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction; Part I Conceptual Overview: A framework to compare environmental policies, Don Fullerton. Part II Costs to Consumers: Is the gasoline tax regressive?, James M. Poterba; Distributional aspects of an environmental tax shift: the case of motor vehicle emissions taxes, Margaret Walls and Jean Hanson; A distributional analysis of green tax reforms, Gilbert E. 4 in stock

Book SynopsisAdam Smith warned of the prevalence of corporate conspiracies more than two hundred years ago. Since then, interest in cartels has sometimes intensified (during the Great Depression, for example) and sometimes diminished, but the need for control has always remained on the antitrust agenda.Trade Review'Mike Utton's timely new book provides an excellent overview of issues arising from cartels and collusion between firms and shows how this remains an important policy concern in the world today. The book covers areas such as the economics of collusion, the case for collaboration and the persistence of cartels over time. It then moves on to policy development and discusses current policy both in the US and EU. Individual cases are reviewed and the important development of leniency policy is discussed as a key feature in policy today. Overall this is a very useful addition to the literature and will be particularly of use to both students and other researchers working in this field.' --Roger Clarke, Cardiff University, UKTable of ContentsContents: Preface 1. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisThis comprehensive and innovative Handbook applies the tools of the economics of complexity to analyse the causes and effects of technological and structural change. It grafts the intuitions of the economics of complexity into the tradition of analysis based upon the Schumpeterian and Marshallian legacies.Trade Review’The editor of this Handbook, Cristiano Antonelli, is to commended for the high quality of the group of authors he has assembled for this project. They provide excellent coverage of the various areas within the field, covering complexity of innovation, complexity of knowledge, complexity of structural change and development, and lessons and implications for economic policy. This is an important and evolving topic, and this book captures the cutting edge of research on it, particularly in connection with the broader idea of economic complexity.’ -- J. Barkley Rosser, Jr., James Madison University, US’My overall impression of the handbook is very favourable. It gives a broad overview of the different topics addressed by complexity economics, especially with regard to innovation and knowledge management. Knowledge and innovation are treated as the emergent properties of a system in which heterogeneous actors interact in different ways at different levels: the firm (meso), the individual (micro), and society (macro). Both Antonelli s and Bonaccorsi's chapters are treasure troves of concepts and ideas, although not necessarily for the complexity novice. Lane's chapter, however, provides an excellent introduction. . . For researchers in the field of economics and those that are interested in 'complexity in the real world', this handbook provides ample discussion and research roads ahead.’ -- Andreas Ligtvoet, Science and Public Policy’Antonelli's handbook is an impressive compendium of theoretical approaches to complexity in economics that has emerged during the last two decades. . . this handbook is an amazing excursus on the state of the art of complexity thinking in the economics of technological change. Not only did the compendium reinforce the achievements of other theory textbooks in this field; it also paves the way for a “normalisation” of complexity in economics. It strongly defends the advantage of operationalization and applied research in economics and touches upon important policy implications. Therefore, it is a must-read both for the scientist and for the policy researcher in the field of innovation and technological change.’ -- Manfred Paier, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social SimulationTable of ContentsContents: PART I: INTRODUCTION 1. • Knowledge in the Development of Economies

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd Knowledge in the Development of Economies

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis innovative book offers a critical perspective on the state of the current global economy, making sense of knowledge-related issues by critically assessing existing institutional choices, as well as pointing to new ways forward.Trade Review'This book presents an entirely new approach to knowledge, creativity and social organisation. The first part of the book provides a trenchant critique of current globalisation, of multinational corporations, the WTO, and intellectual property rights. The rest of the book outlines an alternative globalisation based on inclusion, democratic participation, and equality. The role of the universities in this process is given special attention. The alternative globalisation is still based on the market economy but not necessarily one in which the sole objective of the corporations is to maximise profits. The book is a must-read for all economists, including those who are satisfied with the current state of the subject. The analyses of this volume of outstanding papers edited by Sacchetti and Sugden are fresh, sober and entirely convincing.' -- Ajit Singh, University of Cambridge, UK'It is arguable that at the root of the current global crisis lies the ferocious attack on critical thinking - indeed freedom of thought - that has taken place over the past 30 years or so. The editors of this volume are among the minority voices that kept thinking outside the box and voicing their views during this period. Their present volume offers fascinating readings on diverse issues ranging from uneven development, through university and art management, to motivation, capabilities and democratic governance, as they relate to knowledge and learning. It is hoped that the book will receive the attention it deserves and that more such voices will now be raised and heard.' -- Christos Pitelis, University of Cambridge, UK'While the relevance of knowledge in economic development represents a consolidated result, this volume takes some important steps forward in new directions. Highly valuable is the attempt to integrate the study of knowledge production, with its potential for improved creativity, whose expression is now dependent on the social structure and is not merely exogenous any more. The focus on heterodox approaches and on non-traditional organisational and proprietary forms is particularly coherent with both the theoretical premises of the volume and the expected evolution of economies.' -- Carlo Borzaga, University of Trento, Italy'This is a collection of essays which escapes the confines of mainstream economics, raising fundamental questions of the role of academics in policy making. It requires the reader to imagine different worlds - to think beyond present realities; a book striving to deal with important issues, not sliding over them to make cheap points. A scholarly work; demanding, in places difficult, but worth persevering with. Should be read by everyone interested in a different way forward for economic development in a global world.' -- Keith Cowling, University of Warwick, UKTable of ContentsContents: Preface PART I: INTRODUCTION 1. Book SynopsisPractitioners and policy-makers will also greatly benefit from reading this volume, following up on the author's widely acclaimed book published in 1999 The Economics and Management of Intellectual Property: Towards Intellectual Capitalism.Trade Review'Ove Granstrand's excellent monograph titled Evolving Properties of Intellectual Capitalism: Patents and Innovation for Growth and Welfare explores how the innovation system works in advanced economics. At its core is the concept of the ''innovation spiral'' that depicts the interdependence amongst R&D/knowledge, patents/IP, innovation and economic growth and welfare. Its focus on the neglected topic of intangible assets and intellectual capital is timely. The author's focus is primarily European but the relevance of his work is global. The book is a must read for policymakers, a handy reference for managers, and a useful guide for students wishing to understand the many element of innovation policy.' --David Teece, Berkeley Research Group, US'Ove Granstrand's new book is both a broad and deep treatment of his subject. A general reader may value this original and important work for its international comparisons and its treatment of policy as well as more familiar economic issues. A reader with interest in the details of intellectual property may value the work for the penetrating questions asked in the author's research and the wealth of detail and evidence presented. The book is important in its advocacy of seeing patents as a dynamic factor influencing innovation rather than as simply having a static and protective role. Granstrand's treatment will be valuable to executive and political audiences as well as lawyers and economists.' --James M. Utterback, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, US'This is Ove Granstrand's best and most profound work to date. Book SynopsisIt is these two factors that have determined not only the remarkable success of Asia in economic development but also the uniqueness of its growth model. This book examines the rise of Asia in the past two decades and draws lessons from its growth patterns.Trade Review'Asia, like other continents outside Western Europe and North America, was poor and considered a least-hope region for breaking the poverty trap in post WWII. However, Asia has surprisingly become the most dynamically growing region in the world in the recent decades with extraordinary speed and scale. This book is an insightful study of the root causes and strategic policy framework of Asia's development success. It provides convincing analyses to show that other lower-income countries can learn useful lessons from Asia to achieve their aspiration for prosperity. The book is a must-read for all policy makers and students in the developing world and international development institutions.' --Justin Yifu Lin, Peking University, China and formerly Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank'There are many studies that attempt to explain the rapid rise of the economies of East and South Asia. Only a few of these studies base their analysis on a systematic quantitative comparison of the sources of growth in East and South Asia and none do so with more rigor than this work by Professor Vu Minh Khuong. The study is a major contribution to our understanding of these important economies performance.' --Dwight Perkins, Harvard Kennedy School, US'The astonishing rise of Asia over the past decades is transforming the world economy and changing the balances in global politics. In this book, Professor Vu Minh Khuong provides an in-depth study of the drivers of growth in sixteen Asian economies based on solid empirical analyses. This topic deserves a comprehensive handbook, and the editors delivered. The chapters are engaging and lucid, and cover a wide range of topics. The editors were not shy about spanning boundaries between technical detail, economic analysis, and policy relevance. It succeeds in this thanks to the editors' inclusion of theoretical perspectives ranging from the mainstream to institutional and evolutionary economic theory, complex adaptive systems theory, and critical political economy. . . Readers will gain insight into the limitations of the questions that are asked within different economic traditions, but importantly, also into what can be revealed by these theories and empirical methods. Cambridge University Press Industrial Policy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisDismissing industrial policy because ''governments cannot pick winners'' is counter-productive. This Element studying selected major innovations illustrates the fact that virtually all major new technologies have been developed by a synergetic cooperation between the public and the private sectors, each doing what it can do best. By examining how R&D is financed, rather than where it takes place, the authors show that the role of the public sector is much more pronounced than is often thought. The nature of the cooperation - who does what - varies with the nature of each innovation so that simple, one-size-fits-all, rules about what each sector should do are suspect. These results are particularly important because they challenge the scepticism in the United states and elsewhere about the importance of industrial policy, a scepticism that threatens to undermine the long-term, and necessary cooperation, between the public and private sectors in promoting growth-inducing innovations.Table of Contents1. Starting with unusually rigorous definitions of transaction costs, property rights, and resources, Barzel and Allen lay out a fruitful framework for analyzing institutions and employ it to generate a stunning array of insights into a wide variety of real-world situations. This book is essential reading for economists, legal scholars, policymakers, and anyone else who wants a fresh take on the way institutions work.' Henry E. Smith, Harvard Law School'As is fitting for a Third Edition of Economic Analysis of Property Rights by Yoram Barzel and Douglas W. Allen, there is a lot to learn in this new volume. The authors have been leaders in the New Institutional Economics. They examine property rights, transaction costs, information costs, organizations, and institutions. They describe how these arrangements coordinate and direct economic behavior and impact human welfare. • ReUnderstanding Entrepreneurship

    Cambridge University Press ReUnderstanding Entrepreneurship

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisHow do entrepreneurs make decisions in the real world? Why are entrepreneurs absent from mainstream economics? What functions do entrepreneurs play in the market? What type of institutional environment is needed for entrepreneurship to play a role? Neoclassical economics is a market theory without entrepreneurship. This misconception distorts our understanding of how the real market works, leading to a theory of market failure that forms the common foundation of various government interventions. The market is not only an allocative process but, more importantly, a discovery and creative process. To understand the real market, Weiying Zhang argues that economics must shift from a price-centric to an entrepreneur-centric paradigm. Blending theory and narrative, Zhang intersects history with the present supporting his theory with relevant case studies. He argues that once entrepreneurship in the market is correctly understood, the foundation for government intervention is undermined and the economy can sustainably flourish.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe view of dynamic capabilities in evolutionary economics as being based on capabilities comprised of routines has so far precluded their integration in evolutionary economics. This Element contributes to such integration by introducing the dynamic metacapabilities framework. Borrowing from quantum mechanics, dynamic metacapabilities assume that resources and capabilities, rather than being created ex-nihilo, result from bundles of information ''decohering '' to bundles of resources and capabilities as new information becomes available to the firm. Operationalized by a management paradigm we call ''quantum management, '' dynamic metacapabilities contribute to integrating dynamic capabilities in evolutionary economics and to resolving the ongoing debate on what dynamic capabilities are by postulating an informational view of the firm according to which firms ''evolve '' with strategy throughout a lifecycle governing the transition from dynamic ''metacapabilities '' to dynamic capabilities and onto ordinary capabilities.

Book SynopsisAn alternative theory of the firm is needed that helps better understand the nature and actual functioning of firms as well as the challenges raised by digital platform firms. In defining firms as economic collective ventures organised by political means, this book offers a political economy vision of firms.Specifically, the book provides an authority-based conception of the firm that supplies a theoretical grounding for democratic governance. It is argued that workers must be viewed as actors of the firm, not passive subjects of capital, given that authority is a non-coercive form of power. The book examines authority and subordination from the workers' perspective and argues that when workers accept authority, it is because they see it as facilitating mutually beneficial cooperation between people with divergent interests. As managerial authority is based on its acceptance by workers, it calls for legitimacy. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisEnergy is a key resource for transformational development globally. Oil and gas continue to play a key role in this sector irrespective of the gradual transition towards renewables and will continue to do so in most developing and emerging economies in the near future. The industry is complex and highly capital intensive not only with significant risk, but also with significant benefits. Such a complex but important sector is generally not well understood both in academic and policy circles. This book fills this void by serving as a comprehensive reference to the oil and gas sector, with a focus on emerging markets and developing economies (EMDEs). It offers in-depth coverage of the critical and contemporary issues in the economics of the oil and gas industry by carefully integrating the relevant theoretical underpinnings and practical policy issues across the value chain of the industry in relation to the development, fiscal arrangements, and the economic and financing aspects of the industry. These insights will significantly deepen the understanding of the industry and extend knowledge of the sector in ways that existing books do not. The book includes relevant cases and, thus, will serve as a valuable resource for students taking courses in market analysis of the oil and gas industry, energy economics, development economics and finance, environmental and resource economics, the political economy of the extractive industry, and development studies. In a rapidly changing world, with increasing competition in all sectors of transportation, railways are currently restructuring their planning, management, and technology. As commercial and pricing policies change and new methods of organization are introduced, a more entrepreneurial spirit is required. At the same time, new high-speed tracks are being constructed and old tracks are being renewed, magnetic levitation trains are in operation, hyperloop systems are being planned, high-comfort rolling stock vehicles are being introduced, logistics and combined transport are being developed. Awareness of environmental issues and the search for greater safety attribute a new role to the railways within the transportation system. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisEnterprises in rural regions must now act in a globalized world and face global challenges, such as climate change, resource scarcities and social inequalities or the sustainability preferences of consumers. Rural start-up enterprises often strive to contribute to the solutions of global-scale problems, for example, the issues expressed by the United Nation s Sustainable Development Goals, and for getting skilled labor into urban regions in order to make rural regions appealing to young people again. This book explores the management of sustainability issues in the context of the rural enterprise economy. It sheds light on these challenges and opportunities by linking the rural enterprise economy and sustainability management. It provides practical evidence about how rural enterprises and rural entrepreneurs can handle sustainability requirements and contribute to sustainability transformations in terms of economic, environmental and social stability. In addition to its practical relevance, the motivation of the book is first and foremost to develop a common understanding of the necessary key terminology and core concepts in a still largely underexplored, yet rapidly expanding research field and contribute to theory development by employing a multidisciplinary approach. It offers state-of-the-art cases from various countries to question and approach unresolved research questions related to sustainability issues and the management of sustainability, which are both a requirement and an opportunity for entrepreneurs and enterprises in a rural context. The book primarily targets scholars and researchers in economics and business research, entrepreneurship, innovation, regional planning, economic geography and sustainability management. It is also aimed at practitioners committed to enterprise development or entrepreneurship in rural regions and elsewhere, and policymakers and policy actors at different levels.

Book SynopsisThe emerging conflict between the US and China has an inherent tendency towards a development of deglobalization. It is the historical prerequisites for this deglobalization that are examined in this book. These assumptions are largely based on what is termed the second wave of globalization, based on increasing technological competition between the US and China, as well as China''s expansion along the New Silk Road.In this book, the author makes a distinction between the Old Globalization and the New Globalization. The Old Globalization was characterized by competition over costs in general and wage costs in particular, while the New Globalization is categorized by new competencies and skills, especially technological capabilities and technological innovations. The second wave, which is driven by technological innovations, lays the foundation for a counter-strategy on the part of the US to stem the Chinese technological expansion. It is this new strategy that confines the seTable of Contents1. Towards deglobalization 2. Technological innovations drive deglobalization 3. Deglobalization: A new economic world order (USA-China)

Book SynopsisTimely and invigorating, this book explores how blockchain technology is disrupting economies and transforming societies. It offers detailed insights into the synergistic and complementary effects of blockchain and other new and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, satellite imagery and digital twins.Trade Review‘This book is both a fantastic introduction to the fundamental concepts of blockchains and a unique discussion of the business models impacted by the blockchain. Kshetri provides an excellent sketch of the debate over using distributed ledgers to demonstrate business trustworthiness. The business cases Kshetri provides perfectly demonstrate the value offered by technology that uses strong cryptographic tools. One of the book’s best and most unique contributions is in its chapter on the synergies between artificial intelligence and the blockchain. The case studies from health care and other data-intensive industries offer invaluable details on data ownership management, privacy, data lineage management, and shared governance for users of blockchain and AI technologies. Kshetri also discusses emerging disruptive technologies, like the Metaverse, Web 3.0, and the Internet of Things. This is one of the best books on the subject and an excellent guide for readers of all levels.’ -- J. Brzezinski, Choice Magazine‘Kshetri’s The Rise of Blockchains is a timely, to-the-point, and detailed book on a relatively new and still obscure topic of blockchain technology. The book focuses on this all-new phenomenon deeply impacting, sometimes disrupting, and transforming our societies, policy-making, and the global economy today. And as a matter of fact, it also does a good job focusing on this new technology that has both introduced cryptocurrencies and transformed the supply chain, payments, privacy, and security systems.’ -- Bilal Bağış, Insight Turkey Journal‘Professor Nir Kshetri’s exciting new text The Rise of Blockchains: Disrupting Economies and Transforming Societies is a must read for those interested in how distributed ledgers are impacting the political, economic, and social landscapes of societies, both developed and underdeveloped. Economists, politicians, and anyone else involved in finance should add this text to their reading list.’ -- Jeffrey Voas, EIC Computer Magazine, US‘This book covers several key topics in blockchain, ranging from payment and settlement to cybersecurity and the supply chain. The book is well written and flows logically. It would be a great textbook for a blockchain course and a nice reference for researchers working in this field.’ -- Yogesh K. Dwivedi, Swansea University, UK and Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune, India‘Professor Kshetri has delivered a very timely, well-written, and well-documented treatment of a topic that many people find difficult and sometimes opaque. I believe the content is accessible for both advanced undergrads and graduate students. I plan to adopt this book for my own blockchain course.’ -- Stephen C. Wingreen, University of Canterbury, New Zealand‘In 2018, Ginni Rometty, the retired CEO of IBM, caused a stir when she said presciently: “Blockchain will do for transactions what the Internet did for information.” This compendium by Professor Nir Kshetri attempts to explain why and how such a transformation is taking place. The comprehensive book is framed by business organisations and market opportunities. It addresses the essentials of how Blockchains work, and their synergies with decentralized, autonomous organisations as well as complementary technologies such as AI. It also provides up-to-date coverage of hot-button issues such as use-cases in supply chain management with traceability-as-a-service. It shows how such ubiquitous use-cases will allow Blockchain to cross the chasm. Two enabling technologies – security as an integral aspect of mainstream platforms and Blockchain-enabled payments which may counter the centralizing features of proposed CBDC initiatives – will bring confidence in such a trust-free environment. The book closes with a realistic assessment of emerging opportunities, barriers, trends and policy implications. It is commendable that Professor Kshetri, acknowledged as one of the most impactful researchers on Blockchain, has taken it upon himself to make translational his deep insights and understanding on the topic. I recommend this book highly to any business executive or specialist student interested in exploiting the value of Blockchains.’ -- Ravi S. Cambridge University Press The LaborManaged Firm

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book uses economic theory to argue that worker-controlled firms are rare due to market failures rather than inherent organizational defects. The book will be of interest to scholarly researchers, graduate students, and advanced undergraduates in economics, especially in industrial organization, labor economics, comparative economics, organizational economics, and finance.Trade Review'Gregory K. Dow has thought more deeply and in a more sustained manner about the puzzle of why capital hires labor than any serious student of economic theory since the first efforts in the field were undertaken more than a generation ago. The present effort to organize, revisit, and distil the conclusions from his investigations is rigorous, laid out with admirable clarity, and always intellectually honest and clear-headed. Louis Putterman, Brown University, Rhode Island'Bringing together a lifetime's research, The Labor-Managed Firm lays out the failures of the classic model of cooperatives that assumes that they maximize income per worker instead of profits. It offers an array of ideas about the relation between labor and capital to account for the sparsity of coops in market economies.' Richard Freeman, Harvard University, Massachusetts'This book provides an expansive economic theory of firms controlled by their employees. It explores the birth, evolution and possible transformation of such firms in comparison to conventional investor-owned firms. Although it is a primarily theoretical work, it refers to the empirical literature so the reader gets a broad understanding of this sector of the economy. The theoretical analyses presented in this book provide guidance to practitioners. I highly recommend this book to all those interested in employee ownership.' Avner Ben-Ner, Center for Human Resources and Labor Studies, University of Minnesota'In this remarkable work, Dow synthesizes his extensive research on the economics of labor-managed enterprises. Economists working in the field will find both an indispensable assessment of the literature and a fruitful catalyst for fresh theoretical and empirical investigations. Those new to the subject will discover insights about the manifold ways in which market conditions shape how firms are governed.' Gilbert Skillman, Wesleyan University, Connecticut'Does current corporate governance reflect market efficiency, or are there potentially better ways to organize and run corporations? Gregory K. Dow takes this question to a new level by pulling together his own and others' theoretical work on labor-managed firms, providing a thoughtful comparison of the conditions favoring capital-managed and labor-managed firms. This is a masterful contribution to basic issues of economic organization, with implications for how we should design firms and public policy.' Douglas Kruse, Rutgers University, New Jersey'This is a lovely book, and one we have needed for several decades. It offers a genuinely novel perspective on the theory of labor-managed firms, informed at every step by a careful attention to empirical findings and by the institutional makeup of real-world worker cooperatives and employee-owned firms. Dow has spent some thirty years thinking about these issues, and brings his work together in an impressive whole. It will redefine the theoretical and empirical research agendas, as well as providing an invaluable text in support of a postgraduate course on economic democracy.' Cambridge University Press Monopsony Capitalism

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book explores the combination of capital''s changing composition and labour''s subjective agency to examine whether the waning days of the ''sweatshop'' have indeed begun. Focused on the garment and footwear sectors, it introduces a universal logic that governs competition and reshapes the chain. By analysing workers'' collective action at various sites of production, it observes how this internal logic plays out for labour who are testing the limits of the social order, stretching it until the seams show. By examining the most valorised parts of underdeveloped sectors, one can see where capital is going and how it is getting there. These findings contribute to ongoing efforts to establish workers'' rights in sectors plagued by poverty and powerlessness, building fires and collapses. With this change and a capable labour movement, there''s hope yet that workers may close the gap.Trade Review'Just as the dynamics of capitalism shuts down opportunities for labour organizing, it can also open up new possibilities. In this important book Ashok Kumar traces the history and geographical spread of the garment industry, how retailers have secured ever more power that has led to the restructuring of the global production chain and increased the structural power of the most exploited workers. Exemplary engaged research that challenges the fatalism accompanying neoliberalism.' Michael Burawoy, University of California, Berkeley'The sweatshop economy is pervasive in today's global capitalism. Ashok Kumar charts its evolution, shows how market power is becoming concentrated, and also charts the rise of worker resistance which exploits vulnerabilities in the new production systems.' Richard Hyman, London School of Economics and Political Science'A major theoretical and empirical contribution to our understanding of the evolving state of contemporary global industrial capitalism.' David Harvey, City University of New York'With surgical precision, Ashok Kumar opens up key sites in global supply chains to rigorous investigation and offers urgent insights about how sweatshops work, and how they might work differently. Powerful and profoundly illuminating, this book is a must-read for all those concerned with labour and its movements, and supply chain capitalism and its alternatives.' Deborah Cowen, University of Toronto'Unlike many a book on capitalism and labour, Ashok Kumar not only goes global, but also, most significantly, moves into the innards of the most labour-intensive sectors. Thus, beyond the familiar narratives of exploitation, he proposed a theory of monopsony power in global value chains which brings together the inner logics of capital and the collective power of workers in analysing the evolution of the sweatshop.' Saskia Sassen, Columbia University, New York'This ability to generate new conceptual debates on the basis of thorough and extensive empirical work defines Monopsony Capitalism as a magisterial accomplishment. Cambridge University Press Understanding the PrivatePublic Divide

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisMarkets are taken as the norm in economics and in much of political and media discourse. But if markets are superior why does the public sector remain so large? Avner Offer provides a distinctive new account of the effective temporal limits on private, public, and social activity. Understanding the PrivatePublic Divide accounts for the division of labour between business and the public sector, how it changes over time, where the boundaries ought to run, and the harm that follows if they are violated. He explains how finance forces markets to focus on short-term objectives and why business requires special privileges in return for long-term commitment. He shows how a private sector policy bias leads to inequality, insecurity, and corruption. Integrity used to be the norm and it can be achieved again. Only governments can manage uncertainty in the long-term interests of society, as shown by the challenge of climate change.Trade Review'Family, school, railways? What do they have in common? They cannot be run well, or at all, as private for-profit enterprises and yet they are crucial for a good life. In this well-written and tightly argued book Avner Offer brings arguments to delineate the areas that naturally belong to the market and to the state. At the time when the neoliberal version of capitalism is widely questioned, this books proposes a new set of answers.' Branko Milanovic, author of Global Inequality and Capitalism, Alone.'Avner Offer is, to my mind, the leading thinker on the Left from within the academic community of economists and historians. He is not afraid to think in radical terms, as he has shown in relation to an impressive range of issues, including colonialism, war, consumerism and, here, the state. His latest book is a must-read, imbued with both history and practical economics, and couldn't be more policy relevant. If you agree with Offer, it will add fire to your existing arsenal; if you disagree, it will represent a much-needed challenge. Either way, Offer's voice needs – and deserves – to be heard.' Victoria Bateman, author of The Sex Factor: How Women made the West Rich'As a scholar and as a citizen Avner Offer always puts Truth in the first place. He asks thorny questions that pierce to the heart of things. His judgements are so deeply grounded and so carefully considered that they seldom allow any appeal. Understanding the Private-Public Divide shows Offer's passions for veracity, for equality under the law, for social justice, for community responsibility and for a commensurate distribution of wealth: in a word his humanity. This immediately topical book goes to the heart of the contemporary crisis of untruthfulness, injustice, mistrust and disorder. Complacent satisfaction in contemporary democracy is more and more, he shows, a cloak for corruption and criminality.' Richard Davenport-Hines, author of Universal Man: The Seven Lives of John Maynard Keynes 'The Covid pandemic has exposed the inadequacy of individualism and the market mechanism as answers to a global catastrophe. Avner Offer, one of the most imaginative and thought-provoking of economic historians, shows how this is just one example of a failure to understand the proper roles of the public and private sectors. Book SynopsisIndustrial consolidation, digital platforms, and changing political views have spurred debate about the interplay between public and private power in the United States and have created a bipartisan appetite for potential antitrust reform that would mark the most profound shift in US competition policy in the past half-century. While neo-Brandeisians call for a reawakening of antitrust in the form of a return to structuralism and a concomitant rejection of economic analysis founded on competitive effects, proponents of the status quo look on this state of affairs with alarm. Scrutinizing the latest evidence, Alan J. Devlin finds a middle ground. US antitrust laws warrant revision, he argues, but with far more nuance than current debates suggest. He offers a new vision of antitrust reform, achieved by refining our enforcement policies and jettisoning an unwarranted obsession with minimizing errors of economic analysis.Trade Review'Reforming Antitrust is a delightfully detailed narrative of the policy topic du jour, drawing on first-hand experience and empirical evidence to bring to life the often academically wonkish field of Competition Law. Reflecting on the aspects of antitrust policy that have worked well over the past thirty years and explaining how an error cost framework could help antitrust policy work better, this book is a must-read for public policy makers and academics.' Elizabeth M. Bailey, NERA'Well-written and engaging even to the lay reader, this new volume is a must-read for anyone interested in antitrust reform.
