European Interuniversity Press Fiscal Federalism in the European Union and Its
Book SynopsisThe book tackles a key issue for the European Union: Fiscal Federalism. It evaluates the applicability of this theoretical perspective for the EU. Conversely, it pinpoints ways in which the diversity of existing fiscal settings and organisations, both at national and European levels, can throw light on the theory. The study analyses two of the most important European policies: Cohesion Policy and the Stability and Growth Pact. It compares the episode of German Unification to the 2004 European Enlargement. It pioneers a cross-country analysis of the various national fiscal settings. Finally, it highlights the close links between the dynamics of decision-making related to the main budgetary choices and the integration process. The questions raised are crucial in the current context of economic and institutional uncertainty: How should we apprehend the Cohesion Policy, the main expression of European solidarity? How can the coordination of national fiscal policies be improved? How are European countries and their regions organised in fiscal and budgetary terms? What lessons can the EU draw from its own fiscal past and from that of its Member States? Over and above the originality of the answers provided by the authors, the book suggests that it would be difficult to take the integration process further without first clarifying what Europe can, should or wants to do.

This collection of papers derives from the multidisciplinary workshop of young researchers which took place in Louvain-la-Neuve on 11-13 June 2003. It is based on actual case studies in the sectors of transport, data-processing and telecommunications between the 1950s and the 1980s. It analyses the long and difficult process for those involved in building expertise in the new field of an integrated Europe. At the same time as firms discovered the importance of influencing the decision-making process at work, they were given a place in this participative process. This new role implies the accumulation of enlarged technical competencies and the multiplication of contacts with other economic actors. Together, they have taken part in the demarcation of the Community framework, through the elaboration of technical standards, tax harmonisation, state aids regulation, and so on, and have defended their interests in this framework as best they could. This could provoke strong opposition, which was difficult to overcome. In this case, a process of learning and understanding was necessary on both sides in order to advance Community harmonisation.

Presses Interuniversitaires Europeennes The Worth of the Social Economy: An International
Book SynopsisWhat is the worth of the social economy? What worth does the social economy produce? Co-operatives, not-for-profit and mutual benefits organizations as well as foundations share common values that colour the way they perform and how they manage to do so. Yet, little is known about how the social economy is actually being evaluated, and how evaluation may reinforce or weaken this specificity. This book fills a gap in the literature about the social economy. It seeks to make a critical assessment of the interests to which the social economy of today must cater and for which questions of evaluation appear to be the most telling. A first set of contributions is made up of four theoretical papers inspired by various disciplinary fields: management, economy, sociology, philosophy. A second set of contributions is composed of seven national analyses of how the social economy is evaluated in different institutional contexts: France, Québec (Canada), United Kingdom, United States, Brazil, Portugal and Japan. The conclusion of the book summarizes the findings of this study and formulates some questions addressed to policy designers, evaluation specialists and social economy actors.

Presses Interuniversitaires Europeennes Innovation Networks and Clusters: The Knowledge
Book SynopsisIn Economics, networks are increasingly used to describe the many links created between independent companies, as well as between them and other institutions (universities, banks, venture capital, etc.). In the current global and knowledge-based economy, they can be characterised as knowledge factories and knowledge boosters. They feed the internal processes of innovation (collaborative innovation) or the external processes of innovation, created by the propagation effects that come from inter-firm collaboration. The book explains how innovation networks are at the origin of the production of new knowledge that will be transformed and used in common as well as in separated production processes. This characteristic of networks as knowledge factories gives incentives to further investment in the production of knowledge and ensures the cumulativeness of the innovation process. Some of the authors clearly take a territorial point of view and study how clusters (in different parts of the world: Europe, Eastern Asia and North America) propelled by the quality of the innovation networks they enclose, can be characterised as knowledge pools into which the local actors will be able to draw to reinforce their individual and collective competitiveness. This book also includes analyses of the quality of the networks built within clusters, which may help their identification.

Presses Interuniversitaires Europeennes Oil Producing Countries and Oil Companies: From
Book SynopsisBehind the conflicts and the crises, the agreements and the severing of ties, the oil sector is above all a global business, number one in terms of the scale of trading. The sector is not only essential to the world economy, but it is generally thought to be of strategic importance. The history of oil gives scholars the chance to track and analyse changes in the world in the twentieth century, especially through the transition from unequal trading towards more balanced solutions, in which oil-producing countries can really profit from their resources. Numerous solutions have been proposed to ensure that oil revenue is not lost, but also to ensure that profits are made and supplies are secure. In order to examine the diversity and complexity of the recent history of the oil industry, this book considers the twentieth century across different continents, using original examples and new research on regions such as Latin America and Africa. Different views are analysed and changes in the industry are put into context. Today's realities are brought into focus by putting the spotlight on long-term changes. The volume concludes that the oil sector has not yet fully established itself as a sector of strategic importance.

This book leaves clichés and stereotypes aside and asks an important question: does oil bear responsibility for many of the conflicts in the world since the nineteenth century? Opinions on this issue are divided. For many the question is answered by the fact that oil's bad reputation goes back almost to its first discovery. But to develop a real analysis, it is necessary to compare the geographical locations and contemporary situations of these conflicts, since the contexts involved are seldom comparable. Each geopolitical situation requires nuanced analysis. A critical look at the situation in the long term, touching on situations in nearly every continent, enables the authors of this volume to develop a truly objective response. The image of petroleum emerges changed, if not turned upside down. The authors argue that perhaps we need to look beyond the oil to the political leaders, the entrepreneurs, the military leaders, even to humanity itself, to find the real root of the problem. Before we condemn black gold, we need to restore it to its proper place, as a reflection of human ambition.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Why Is The China Model Losing Its Power? -
Book SynopsisHistory has proved that communism failed at many levels during the first global competition between the capitalist and socialist camps during the Cold War. As a result, the socialist camp was dissolved. China is one of the few communist countries to survive in the twenty-first century. The Chinese economy was on the verge of collapse in the 1970s but began to take off in the early 1980s, guided by the China model. China became the world's second largest economy in 2010 and has quickly expanded its enormous global market and political influence. The second global competition between the capitalist countries and China has started. The second global competition is in fact between the China model and the Washington Consensus. Will Western hegemonies end as the result of the second global competition? Will China be able to rewrite the international rules? Will the Chinese communist political system collapse during the competition? What should the West do to the China model? This book will explore the implications of the China model in the context of the second global competition and argues that the downturn of the China model and China's global expansion are the two sides of the same coin. The China model is losing its power but not broken. China would be able to become even stronger, if it could reshape the philosophical foundation of the China model. The future of Western hegemony will depend on how the West understands the China model and deals with it. This book addresses these aspects and more.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd China's Economic Reforms: Successes And
Book SynopsisIn the last 40 years of China's economic reforms, the country has made unprecedented progress in its economic development and its position in the global stage. As a result, interest in China has resulted in numerous books focusing on the world's second largest economy. A single volume, however, cannot possibly explain the complex nature of China's economic system and its relationship with the rest of the world. China's Economic Reforms: Successes and Challenges contributes to the understanding of China's reforms by offering a detailed analysis of critical components of the country's economic architecture.Within the context of the global economy, the book illustrates the performance of the Chinese economy at both the aggregate and individual sector levels before and after reforms. Comparisons and contrasts are made with the economies of the US, Japan, South Korea, India, and Russia. The book presents the challenges facing the Chinese reform process, and explain how these challenges affect the domestic economy, the rest of the world, and the overall success of China's reforms.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Chinese Financial System, The: Sino-centricity
Book SynopsisWith a strategic and geopolitical view on China's financial system, this book explores a number of roles that it plays in the world's second largest economy. The first key mission has been the financing of the domestic economy. The second one has been the financing of infrastructures (transportation, energy, and telecommunication) to offer companies a conducive environment to develop manufacturing facilities. Thirdly, it supports Chinese foreign investment. The final and most recent role is the active use of technology in finance and investment to collect big data. The book supports three theses. The first thesis argues that finance and investment are not only the product of market forces but also other dimensions like regulations, geopolitics, technology and internal governance. Another thesis is that the State Council is metaphorically the conductor, and financial and economic actors are the performers who must imperatively follow the conductor. Last but not least, the third thesis is that the sino-centric perspective adopted by the Chinese authorities impedes foreign entry. Contrary to industries opened to foreign companies, the Chinese government left ajar the door to banking industry — characterizing foreign banks as marginal actors in the system.

Springer Verlag, Singapore The Limits of Authoritarian Governance in
Book SynopsisThis book delves into the limitations of Singapore’s authoritarian governance model. In doing so, the relevance of the Singapore governance model for other industrialising economies is systematically examined. Research in this book examines the challenges for an integrated governance model that has proven durable over four to five decades. The editors argue that established socio-political and economic formulae are now facing unprecedented challenges. Structural pressures associated with Singapore’s particular locus within globalised capitalism have fostered heightened social and material inequalities, compounded by the ruling party’s ideological resistance to substantive redistribution. As ‘growth with equity’ becomes more elusive, the rationale for power by a ruling party dominated by technocratic elite and state institutions crafted and controlled by the ruling party and its bureaucratic allies is open to more critical scrutiny.Table of Contents1. World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Emerging Capital Markets And Transition In
Book SynopsisThis book provides the analysis on capital markets in China, focusing attention upon (1) the bubble phenomena (whether or not a Chinese bubble really exists and might burst), (2) foreign direct investment and (3) integration, through all of which we could recognize the current situation and the future prospects of Chinese marketization. As regards to the bubble phenomena, particularly 'early warning indicator' of the bubble, this book attempts to utilize the Grubbs-Smirnov Test to discover the 'abnormal value' in several asset markets. Investigations of this book suggest that the distinctive features of the Chinese market have been significantly different from the markets of capitalist countries such as the United States and Japan. As far as Japan's foreign direct investments in China are concerned, this book tries to reveal the Chinese characteristics on FDI phenomena with FDI-trade ratio. The analysis of this book suggests that Chinese FDI from Japan has undoubtedly revealed the distortions caused by non-economic factors, which also mean that the distinctive features of the Chinese market have been different from the markets of the United States and Japan etc. Regarding integration, this book provides the analysis on the 'G2' system between the United States and China (cooperation or conflict between them). The considerations of this book conclude that it might be difficult to have good cooperation between them because of significant differences between the Chinese system and the US system.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Asian Economic Systems
Book SynopsisAsian Economic Systems provides readers with a crisp analytic framework, concepts and narrative highlighting contemporary Asia's systemic diversity. The framework facilitates insightful comparison with the western neoclassical ideal. This method allows students to easily appreciate the special virtues of various Asian economic systems, and compare them with those offered in the west. This objective is buttressed with background material on Asian economic history where appropriate, together with basic data on Asian and global economic performance to help students integrate concepts with experience. The approach provides an objective platform for discussing Asia's place and future in the new global order. It makes it clear that there is no universally best economic system. There are a variety of good systems and nations should choose the system that best suits their cultural heritage, values and aspirations. The approach informs discussions about the wisdom of forming regional free trade zones, economic communities (like ASEAN), and unions (analogous to the European Union), as well as forging a one-world system of economic governance. Also, Asian Economic Systems has a secondary goal. It provides the tools needed for training students in how to apply microeconomic, macroeconomic and financial principles to practical issues of systems and policies. The book focuses on East and Southeast Asia. The term Asia is used as a shorthand for the cultural region dominated historically by Confucian kinship networks, Japanese communalism and Theravada Buddhism, and more recently by Marxist-Leninist communism. It excludes the Middle East, Central Asia, the Himalayan states, South Asia, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Russia and America's Asia Pacific possessions. The book identifies and elaborates four rival market systems in contemporary Asia each with its own distinctive performance characteristics, potentials and humanist properties: (1) communist (China, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia), (2) Confucian (Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Korea), (3) communal (Japan), and (4) Theravada Buddhist (Thailand and Sri Lanka). Their comparative merit is partly obscured by differences in stages of economic development, epochal, and conjunctural factors, but their special positive and negative attributes are unmistakable, and are compared with North Korea's communist command system which is the region's fifth core alternative to democratic free enterprise.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Capitalism In The 21st Century: Why Global
Book Synopsis'Dr Donghyun Park is a prominent and rare economist in Asia who can combine frontline economic theories, lively data, and real-time policy analyses. Capitalism in the 21st Century is a masterful book by Dr Park, providing a comprehensive understanding of heterogenous trajectories of economies around the globe and more fundamental mechanisms of the modern capitalistic system. This is a 'must-read' for those who are interested in comparative economic systems, global economy, and international development.'Yasuyuki SawadaChief Economist, Asian Development BankProfessor of Economics, University of Tokyo'Donghyun Park makes clear that capitalism gets a bad rap, in large part because of too much emphasis on capital as in financial engineering, and too much emphasis on capitals as in government protectionism. Park argues a compelling case that genuine capitalism, which is about entrepreneurship, is necessary to solve the big problems most people face around the globe.'Adam S PosenPresident, Peterson Institute of International EconomicsGlobal capitalism is currently suffering from an unmistakable malaise, epitomized by wide and growing inequality that is eroding popular support for capitalism. Such anti-capitalist sentiment, coupled with a growing anti-globalization mood, delivered Brexit in a UK referendum and swept Donald Trump to the US presidency. In Capitalism in the 21st Century, internationally well-regarded economist Dr Donghyun Park articulately explains why more capitalism is needed to tackle global problems such as climate change and inhumane poverty. While defending capitalism against its unfair demonization, the author makes a positive case for entrepreneurial capitalism, which creates wealth and jobs as well as drives human progress. According to the author, reforming the financial industry, which has become a self-serving leviathan, and more fundamentally, tweaking the economic role of the government, which stifles growth-promoting entrepreneurship, are critical to restoring the vitality of capitalism. The book is explicitly written in such a way that the general reader without any background in economics or finance can easily understand it.Related Link(s)

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd World Development And Economic Systems: Theory
Book SynopsisMainstream economics generally assumes a universalistic market-oriented economic behavior that drives countries to adopt one economic system, with marginal variations. This book extends the scope of theory and applications by asserting that other distinct behaviors evolve and dominate in other economic systems. Systemic differences arise from distinct social, political and economic behavioral-motivational types that associate with intensive agent activity in household, state and firm settings. External conditions, historical events, and agent interactions ultimately result in domination of one motivational type over others; thus determining distinct profiles of structure, conduct, and performance in different economic systems, that are generally observed in the adopting countries.The book validates the theory empirically, traces the historical evolution of the respective economic systems in the world regions and evaluates their responses to various systemic failures such as monopoly, uncertainties, externalities and collective needs. The evaluation is extended to structural changes and system performance regarding growth and distribution.This book draws on microeconomics, welfare economics, development economics and the international economy. The book projects the influence potential of leading countries/systems, and treats effects of displacement of incumbent leaders (US, Japan) by newcomer leaders (China, India) on system competition and on world governance.Table of ContentsIntroduction; An Integrative Theory of Economic Systems; Empirical Validations; Evolution and Evaluation of the Firm Intensive System in FIS-Centered Countries; Evolution and Evaluation of the State Intensive Systems in SIS-Oriented Countries; Economic Systems in the World Development Regions; Focus on China and India as Upcoming Global Leaders; World Governance and System Competition in the Near Future;

Hamad Bin Khalifa University Press The Centrality of Middle Class
Book SynopsisAs the need for economic growth takes a salient role in the political discourse of society's welfare and progress, the middle class, as a social grouping existing within socioeconomic structures, has a multiplier effect - politically and culturally. The middle class serves a vital role in supporting a country's growth through stimulating economic development and promoting a politically engaged society. By examining Vietnam and Serbia as ideologically attuned countries which differ in economic development, the author draws on functionalist, dimensional paradigms to underline how critical the rise of middle class is in understanding the political stability of modern societies before concluding that society's sub-social challenges and cultural determinants do affect the course of development and growth. This comprehensive study will appeal to social scientists with interests in political stability, ideological states and development narratives.

NUS Press Economic Disparity in Rural Myanmar:
Book SynopsisMarket liberalization in Myanmar began in 1988 and had some unanticipated consequences. As farmers began to operate in a context with greatly reduced government control, there was an explosion in the production of green gram, which became extremely popular as an export crop. However, market liberalization in the industry surrounding this new export-oriented crop gave rise to growing economic disparities, largely determined by access to land, capital and credit.Ikuko Okamoto explores these issues through a detailed case study of Thongwa Township, a place east of Yangon (Rangoon) in the major green gram producing region in the country. She shows that farmers responded quickly to policy changes and made maximum use of new opportunities, even in a country where socialist policies had previously limited such opportunities. She also traces the consequences for different social groups in rural Myanmar, and shows that traders benefited the most from the new arrangements, and landless laborers the least. Her research offers important insights into the transition from a socialist to a market-based economy, and local-level responses to market incentives. It also shows that the success or failure of new crops in a peasant economy largerly depends on whether the crop is compatible with the initial resource endowment.

Time Myth-busting and nicely-written collection of essays Independent, UK Shaking Economics 101 assumptions to the core ... Kirkus Reviews For anyone who wants to understand capitalism not as economists or politicians have pictured it but as it actually operates, this book will be invaluable -- John Gray Observer, UK A lively, accessible and provocative book Sunday Times, UK For 40 years, I have worked as a journalist and trained thousands of other journalists from my former perches as a University of Missouri Journalism School professor and as executive director of Investigative Reporters and Editors.
