    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe second volume of The Cambridge History of Capitalism provides an authoritative reference on the spread and impact of capitalism across the world, and the varieties of responses to it. Employing a wide geographical coverage and strong comparative outlook, a team of leading scholars explore the global consequences that capitalism has had for industry, agriculture, and trade, along with the reactions by governments, firms, and markets. The authors consider how World War I halted the initial spread of capitalism, but global capitalism arose again by the close of the twentieth century. They explore how the responses of labor movements, compounded by the reactions by political regimes, whether defensive or proactive, led to diverse military and welfare consequences. Beneficial results eventually emerged, but the rise and spread of capitalism has not been easy or smooth. This definitive volume will have widespread appeal amongst historians, economists, and political scientists.Trade Review'In many respects the history of capitalism is the history most relevant to our times. It's a huge story and is well told in this very important book.' Lawrence H. Summers, Charles W. Eliot University Professor, Harvard University'The two editors of The Cambridge History of Capitalism have done an excellent job in assembling an all-star group of scholars in presenting first-rate essays dealing with the development and accomplishments of capitalism and the important impacts of national and international markets for labor, capital, and goods throughout the world. These studies range in time from ancient Babylonia to today. All essays are superbly researched and highly informative in detailing the contributions of markets and of capitalism to global political and economic development.' Stanley Engerman, University of Rochester, New York'This is a book we have been waiting for: an authoritative analysis of the rise and development of global capitalism, inspired by the great classical economists and written by a team of excellent experts in the field. A fine update of our knowledge about one of the big questions in the social sciences.' Jan Luiten van Zanden, Universiteit Utrecht, The Netherlands'… an inestimable contribution.' Oxford Today'Undeniably these two volumes amount to an impressive achievement … any reader will learn a great deal from these volumes and at the same time find their understanding significantly enhanced.' • Cambridge University Press Trades Quotes and Prices

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisFor decades, discussions of financial markets have primarily centred on prices. In this book for practitioners, researchers and advanced students, the authors present an alternative approach - the microstructure approach - by considering the micro-scale actions of individual traders, and addressing many long-standing questions regarding market fairness, stability, and optimal trading.Trade Review'Leading physicist and hedge fund manager Jean-Philippe Bouchaud and his co-authors have written an impressive book that no serious student of market microstructure can afford to be without. Simultaneously quantitative and highly readable, Trades, Quotes and Prices presents a complete picture of the topic, from classical microstructure models to the latest research, informed by years of practical trading experience.' Jim Gatheral, Baruch College, City University of New York'This book describes the dynamics of supply and demand in modern financial markets. It is a beautiful story, full of striking empirical regularities and elegant mathematics, illustrating how the tools of statistical physics can be used to explain financial exchange. This is a tour de force with the square root law of market impact as its climax. It shows how institutions shape human behaviour, leading to a universal law for the relationship between fluctuations in supply and demand and their impact on prices. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see how physics has benefited economics, or for that matter, to anyone who wants to see a stellar example of a theory grounded in data.' Doyne Farmer, University of Oxford'This is a masterful overview of the modern and rapidly developing field of market microstructure, from several of its creators. The emphasis is on simple models to explain real and important features of markets, rather than on sophisticated mathematics for its own sake. The style is narrative and illustrative, with extensive references to more detailed work. A unique feature of the book is its focus on high-frequency data to support the models presented. This book will be an essential resource for practitioners, academics, and regulators alike.' Robert Almgren, New York University and Quantitative BrokersTable of ContentsPreface; Part I. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisProvides a new intellectual, economic and legal history of capitalism from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. It analyzes the interaction between economic practices and legal constructions in France and compares the French case with other Western countries during this period, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany and Italy.Trade Review'Stanziani explores European economic development from a fresh angle, substituting a focus on law, credit, institutions, regulation, and organizational innovations for the customary centrality of technology and industry. The result is a provocative, practice-centered analysis, stretching across four centuries. An extraordinary recasting of economic history, as arresting as it is engaging.' Philip Scranton, Rutgers University'This work is original. It tackles key issues of the present-day world economy, adding new views to a long-standing debate on the role of governments, laws, institutions, regulations, conventions and the like, leading readers back to late [eighteenth]-century economic thought. In studying rules (codified of course, but also habitual ways of doing), Stanziani suggests a new chronology of capitalist development - ni plus, ni moins. In so doing, he sheds new light on issues such as laissez-faire policy, social welfare systems, mass consumption, institutions and actors since the late [eighteenth] century up to now. This is an impressive achievement.' Peter Scholliers, Vrije Universiteit Brussel'Stanziani argues convincingly that the ancien régime concern with just price and consumer protection was largely absent from nineteenth-century standardization efforts.' Paul Cheney, The Journal of Modern History'Stanziani offers bold claims while being meticulous enough to reward readers who require convincing … Rules of Exchange stands out both for its bold claims and its ability to muster enough evidence to defend them.' Book SynopsisOne of New York Magazine''s best books on Silicon Valley! The true, behind-the-scenes history of the people who built Silicon Valley and shaped Big Tech in America Long before Margaret O''Mara became one of our most consequential historians of the American-led digital revolution, she worked in the White House of Bill Clinton and Al Gore in the earliest days of the commercial Internet. There she saw firsthand how deeply intertwined Silicon Valley was with the federal government--and always had been--and how shallow the common understanding of the secrets of the Valley''s success actually was. Now, after almost five years of pioneering research, O''Mara has produced the definitive history of Silicon Valley for our time, the story of mavericks and visionaries, but also of powerful institutions creating the framework for innovation, from the Pentagon to Stanford University. It is also a story of a community that started off remarkably homogeneous and tight-knit and stayed that way, and whose belief in its own mythology has deepened into a collective hubris that has led to astonishing triumphs as well as devastating second-order effects.Deploying a wonderfully rich and diverse cast of protagonists, from the justly famous to the unjustly obscure, across four generations of explosive growth in the Valley, from the forties to the present, O''Mara has wrestled one of the most fateful developments in modern American history into magnificent narrative form. She is on the ground with all of the key tech companies, chronicling the evolution in their offerings through each successive era, and she has a profound fingertip feel for the politics of the sector and its relation to the larger cultural narrative about tech as it has evolved over the years. Perhaps most impressive, O''Mara has penetrated the inner kingdom of tech venture capital firms, the insular and still remarkably old-boy world that became the cockpit of American capitalism and the crucible for bringing technological innovation to market, or not. The transformation of big tech into the engine room of the American economy and the nexus of so many of our hopes and dreams--and, increasingly, our nightmares--can be understood, in Margaret O''Mara''s masterful hands, as the story of one California valley. As her majestic history makes clear, its fate is the fate of us all.

Now, ten years later, they’re back with another must-read story that will help any team or organization cope with their biggest challenges and turn them into exciting opportunities. Once upon a time a clan of meerkats lived in the Kalahari, a region in southern Africa. It offers a powerful warning to those who take globalization for granted. What the midwife nutured, she may also help strangle. In the best tradition of social science. "Limits" demonstrates how mastery of the details illuminates the big picture of a world poised between renewal and disaster.' Hugh Heclo, George Mason University, Virginia 'This is an important book in three ways. It is synoptic in providing and interrelated explanation of the post-war rise of welfare capitalism, the pressures of globalization and subsequent welfare state reforem. It is synthetic in its sensitive interweaving of a wide range of literature. And it is illuminating in its depth analysis especially of the US and German cases.' She was looking for an answer to Brecht''s question about the dark times, about whether there will also be singing during the dark times. The answer that Brecht provides is that yes, that poets will sing of the dark times. In the six ars poeticas that Spahr writes, she sings of the dark times but also of coral, the pop song''s possible liberation, and the love of comrades. She writes not only of the rich history of what politics and poetry have done with each other, but what they might yet do together.[Sample Poem]from ARS POETICA 1: CORAL To write poetry after Castle Bravo. Then to write poetry after 1500 feet. After high-quality steel frame buildingsnot completely collapsed, exceptall panels and roofs blown in.After 2,000 feet. After reinforced concrete buildings collapsedor standing but badly damaged. After 3,500 feet. After church buildings completely destroyed. After brick walls severely cracked. After 4,400 feet. After 5,300 feet. After roof tiles bubbled and melted. After 6,500 feet. After mass distortion of large steel buildings. To write the Cold War and doves. The Cold War and tapeworms. The Cold War and sails of ships. The Cold War and the steel of bridges. To write poetry after that.To write in a world with few nutrients, one that rocks back and forth. The same beginning in both the sea and the land.To write poetry that knows a hard, cup-shaped skeleton. And then poetry that knowsthe long, stinging tentacles capturing.Knows the water. The Atlantic and the Pacific. The connections between. The one moving into the other. To develop poetry in the stomachthat then exits through the mouthwhich is the anus.To write poetry in the bluethat is the absence of green.Light penetration.Whorls of tentacles. The slime earth too.Hunters and farmers.Shallow water.Few nutrients.High fecundity.Rapid growth.Multiarmed morphology and tube feet.To write tube feet.To write the exact place.Seaward slope place.Sea terrace place.Algal ridge place.Coral algal zone place.Seaward reef flat place.Islet or interisland reef crest place.Lagoon reef flat place.Lagoon terrace place.Lagoon floor or basin place.Coral knolls, pinnacle and patch reefs place. To write poetry after.

Book SynopsisA renowned Harvard professor debunks prevailing orthodoxy with a new intellectual foundation and a practical pathway forward for a system that has lost its moral and ethical foundation.Free market capitalism is one of humanity''s greatest inventions and the greatest source of prosperity the world has ever seen. But this success has been costly. Capitalism is on the verge of destroying the planet and destabilizing society as wealth rushes to the top. The time for action is running short.Rebecca Henderson''s rigorous research in economics, psychology, and organizational behavior, as well as her many years of work with companies around the world, give us a path forward. She debunks the worldview that the only purpose of business is to make money and maximize shareholder value. She shows that we have failed to reimagine capitalism so that it is not only an engine of prosperity but also a system that is in harmony with environmental realities, the striving for social justice, and the demands of truly democratic institutions. Henderson''s deep understanding of how change takes place, combined with fascinating in-depth stories of companies that have made the first steps towards reimagining capitalism, provide inspiring insight into what capitalism can be. Together with rich discussions of important role of government and how the worlds of finance, governance, and leadership must also evolve, Henderson provides the pragmatic foundation for navigating a world faced with unprecedented challenge, but also with extraordinary opportunity for those who can get it right.

    Out of stock

Book Synopsis The sociologist Thomas Sowell writes, "We need to confront the most blatant fact that has persisted across centuries of social history—vast ddifferences in productivity among peoples, and the economic and other consequences of such differences." Poverty demeans dignity, shrinks the soul, wastes potential, and inflicts suffering on three billion people on our planet. We must also acknowledge that, during the past fifty yyears, the record in international assistance to the least developed countries has been disappointing; the economics-based abstractions developed in the think tanks of Europe and North America are insufficient. In the River They Swim is the antithesis of that search for solutions to the next big theory of global poverty. From the fresh perspective of advisors on the frontlines of development to the insight of leaders like President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and Pastor Rick Warren, it tells the story of change in the microcosms of emerging businesses, industries, and governments. These essays display a personal nature to their work that rigorous analysis alone cannot explain. We learn that a Sufi master can teach us about the different levels of knowledge, the "different ways to know a river." These practitioners could have written about its length, its source, its depth, its width, the power of its current, and the life it contains. They could have invested time and money to travel to that river so that they could sit on its shores and look at it, feel the sand that borders it, and watch the birds at play over it. Instead, they dove in to swim in the river, felt its current along their bodies, and tasted something of it. They wondered, briefly, if they had the strength to swim its length, and now they share the answer. If human development is a river, the authors in this volume, and perhaps some readers, will no longer be satisfied to stand along its banks. Book Synopsis"The Commons" is a generic term that denotes everything we share. The commons includes our entire life support system, both natural and social. The air and oceans, the web of species, wilderness and flowing water â all are parts of the commons. So too are language and knowledge, sidewalks and public squares, the stories of childhood, the processes of democracy. Some parts of the commons are gifts of nature, others the product of human creativity and endeavor. Some are new, such as the Internet, others are as ancient as soil and calligraphy. But they all âœbelongâ to all of us, if that is the word. No one has exclusive rights. We inherit them jointly and hold them in trust for those who come after us.This short but comprehensive work examines the history and tragic loss of the commons and discusses how we can bring them back at a time when privatization and ownership are economic mantras. By examining institutions, communities, and educational systems as well as the ways in which communities and even nations are governed, the authors make a plea for a more sustainable, healthier, and socially beneficial future for all by establishing and thriving in the commons.

A cogently structured anti-capitalist approach to the climate crisis." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Why, in our affluent society, do so many people live in poverty, without access to health care, working multiple jobs and are nevertheless unable to make ends meet, with no future prospects, while the planet is burning? In his international bestseller, Kohei Saito argues that while unfettered capitalism is often blamed for inequality and climate change, subsequent calls for “sustainable growth” and a “Green New Deal” are a dangerous compromise. Capitalism creates artificial scarcity by pursuing profit based on the value of products rather than their usefulness and by putting perpetual growth above all else. It is therefore impossible to reverse climate change in a capitalist society—more: the system that caused the problem in the first place cannot be an integral part of the solution. Instead, Saito advocates for degrowth and deceleration, which he conceives as the slowing of economic activity through the democratic reform of labor and production. In practical terms, he argues for: the end of mass production and mass consumption decarbonization through shorter working hours the prioritization of essential labor over corporate profits By returning to a system of social ownership, he argues, we can restore abundance and focus on those activities that are essential for human life, effectively reversing climate change and saving the planet.Trade Review"If you want to get a jump on the book everyone will be talking about this winter, you should preorder Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto now."—Jeva Lange, Heatmap News"Saitō’s proposal is simple, salient, and adapts Marx for the modern day."—The Millions"Looking to start out the year with some big ideas? Marxism, he argues, offers a viable model for reorienting society around the maximization of public goods as opposed to the endless pursuit and concentration of wealth."—Ben Dooley & Hisako Ueno, The New York Times"This necessary and energizing 21st Century manifesto is a truth mirror inviting us to see ourselves and our place in the metastatic growth engine that is our current economic system.

    Out of stock

    Out of stock

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisMarket liberalization in Myanmar began in 1988 and had some unanticipated consequences. As farmers began to operate in a context with greatly reduced government control, there was an explosion in the production of green gram, which became extremely popular as an export crop. However, market liberalization in the industry surrounding this new export-oriented crop gave rise to growing economic disparities, largely determined by access to land, capital and credit.Ikuko Okamoto explores these issues through a detailed case study of Thongwa Township, a place east of Yangon (Rangoon) in the major green gram producing region in the country. She shows that farmers responded quickly to policy changes and made maximum use of new opportunities, even in a country where socialist policies had previously limited such opportunities. She also traces the consequences for different social groups in rural Myanmar, and shows that traders benefited the most from the new arrangements, and landless laborers the least. Her research offers important insights into the transition from a socialist to a market-based economy, and local-level responses to market incentives. It also shows that the success or failure of new crops in a peasant economy largerly depends on whether the crop is compatible with the initial resource endowment.
