Springer Verlag, Singapore The Mahalanobis Growth Model: A Macrodynamics
Book SynopsisThis book provides an analytical and computational approach to solving and simulating the Mahalanobis model and the papers surrounding it. The book comes up, perhaps for the first time, with a holistic examination of an important growth model that emerged out of India in the 1950s. It contains detailed derivations of the Mahalanobis model and the several critiques and extensions surrounding it with an organized synthesis of the main results. Computationally, the book simulates the model and its many variants, thus making it accessible to a wider audience. Advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students in the fields of Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics will gain immensely from understanding both the mathematical aspects as well as the computational aspects of the Mahalanobis model. In the absence of a single 'go-to' source on all aspects of the model -- analytical and computational -- this book is a definitive volume on the Mahalanobis model that has all the derivations of all the papers surrounding the model, its dissents and critiques, and extensions as in the wage goods model suggested by Vakil and Brahmananda. Trade Review“The book The Mahalanobis Growth Model: A Macrodynamics Approach by Ghate, Gopalakrishnan, and Grover (G3) is a labor of love, a fitting intellectual tribute to PCM’s growth models, which too were labors of love designed to concretize ideals of development planning for India’s Five-Year Plans. … Indian economics undergraduates will read this book, work through the math, digest the economic intuition, and come away with a sense of awe for PCM. They will come to appreciate … .” (Joydeep Bhattacharya, Indian Economic Review, Vol. 58 (1), 2023)Table of ContentsChapter 1: Overview of the 2 Sector Mahalanobis Model- Simulations in Matlab Chapter 2: Critiques of the 2 Sector Mahalanobis Model - The Bronfenbrenner Critique - The Ezekiel Critique - The Bettelheim Critique - The JBS Haldane Critique - The Raj and Sen Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 3: A Stochastic Version of the 2 Sector Mahalanobis Model - Outline of the Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 4: Open Economy Extensions of the 2-sector Mahalanobis Model - The Harris Model - The Ezekiel Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 5: Overview of the 4 Sector Mahalanobis Model - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 6: Critiques of the 4 Sector Mahalanobis Model - The Komiya Critique - Observations by Tsuru - The Shenoy Dissent - Simulations in Matlab Chapter 7: The Wage Good Model - An Analytical Framework – The Brahmananda and Vakil Model – by MJ Manohar Rao - Simulations in Matlab

Springer Verlag, Singapore Rural Poverty, Growth, and Inequality in China
Book SynopsisThis book aims to empirically and theoretically study how the economic growth and inequality affected China’s rural poverty since China’s reform and opening-up. Apart from the trickle-down effect, some empirical researches show that rising inequality usually links with unfairly shared of the economic growth, which is not good for the poor, and this book particularly concerns with the impact of inequality on poverty reduction. In 11 chapters, it leads readers to review the dynamic changes of rural poverty in China, and estimates rural poverty by various methods, for instance, with analysis by monetary poverty (including income and expenditure poverty), multidimensional poverty, absolute poverty, and relative poverty. Especially attention is paid to apply the “growth-inequality-poverty triangle” model for long-term poverty dynamic changes evaluation. The book revisits poverty reduction strategies in different development periods for rural China and evaluates the poverty eradication achievements stage-by-stage under different analytical methods, in order to provide an objective assessment. Among the chapters, pro-poor growth, Shapley decomposition, poverty elasticity, density estimation, multidimensional poverty analysis, and policy simulation methods are applied for both national wide discussion and rural sub-group heterogeneity analysis. In addition to students, teachers, and researchers in the areas of development, economic growth, equity, and welfare, the book is also of great interest to policy makers, planners, and non‐government agencies who are concerned with understanding and addressing poverty-related issues in the developing countries.Table of ContentsPreface.- Chapter 1 Poverty Alleviation Process in Rural China.- Chapter 2 Literature Review.- Chapter 3 Absolute and Relative Changes in Rural Poverty.- Chapter 4 Pro-poor Growth for Rural China.- Chapter 5 The Decomposition of Income Growth and Income Inequality on Rural Poverty.- Chapter 6 Types of Economic Activities and Rural Residents’ Poverty Dynamic Changes.- Chapter 7 Human Capital and Rural Residents’ Poverty Dynamic Changes.- Chapter 8 Dynamic Rural Poverty Changes by Regions: Current Status and Prospects.- Chapter 9 The Impacts of Unbalanced Development on Rural Multidimensional Poverty.- Chapter 10 Relieving Relative Poverty in Rural China.- Appendix

Springer Verlag, Singapore Macroeconomic Policy in India Since the Global
Book SynopsisThis book discusses the Indian economic crisis and brings out what went wrong and the correction necessary for getting the economy back to high growth trajectory, leading to economic transformation. To do so, the book covers trends in performance of Indian economy since the Global Financial Crisis to the COVID-19 effect, bringing out factors that have determined the same. The book questions the approach to macroeconomic policy of both the RBI and the government and brings out what it takes for macroeconomic policy to be supportive of high growth. It contains revealing contrasts with East Asia and China, although India has the same potential to grow with an expansion of manufacturing. Overall, it argues that macroeconomic policies (as much as structural, industrial, and trade policies) have been deficient and even good initiatives on the industrial policy and trade flounder for the lack of a strategic approach to macroeconomics. The book highlights the special opportunities present in an emerging economy with vast under and utilised labour and the macroeconomic policy initiatives that can take advantage of this key feature. It covers the macroeconomic data on growth using multiple indicators, then the external shocks and the internal policy measures/responses; besides, GVA/GDP, credit, exports, external transactions, interest and policy rates, yields, exchange rates, money, capital flows, indices of industrial sector, price indices and inflation, government expenditures, tax rates, fiscal deficits, market uncertainty measures to present a holistic picture of the economy and the shocks and policy actions that have followed. The book uses an innovative method of presentation and the consistency of the trends/stances of both monetary and fiscal policy using these large number of variables. It discusses the debate on overestimation of GDP/GVA growth estimates over the years from 2011-12 to about 2016-17 comprehensively. There is special coverage of GST with a comparison with China. Coverage also includes performance since the COVID-19 crisis again using a large number of indicators and an explanation for the same in terms of the limitations of the government’s initiatives to counteract. The book is a quick and ready reference of what has happened in macroeconomic terms to those interested in the relevant facts. It is of interest to international economists, policy analysts, and investors whose need to understand that the Indian economy in macroeconomic terms and in terms of the stances and penchant of the government and the RBI is of value.Table of ContentsChapter 1. Book SynopsisThis book analyzes education in Japan from the viewpoint of “the stagnant current Japanese economy”. Tomoyuki Tamagawa, a long-time mathematics teacher in junior high school, is now a vice principal. He and Tamotsu Nakamura have written Chapter 1 of this book together because they believe that the loss of vitality in the Japanese economy is due to the problem of human capital formation in school education. Shinji Oi has worked for many years at a Japanese broadcasting station and has extensive experience in human resource development. In Chapter 2, he analyzes the relationship between optimal human capital investment and labor market mobility, based on his recognition of the importance of vocational training, or human capital investment at the firm and the necessity for good allocation of human resources. Tokuji Saita is well versed not only in the realities and practices in the financial industry but also in the financial system as a whole. In Chapter 3, based on his long experience in the financial industry, he analyzes and points out the importance of “openness” of innovation from a macroeconomic point of view.Table of ContentsChapter 1:- Relationship between educational attainment and class size: Effects of teacher resource allocation.- Chapter 2:- Investment in general and specific human capital: Social optimality via labor turnover.- Chapter3:-Necessity of openness to stimulate innovation: An investigation into causes of slow innovation.

ISEAS The Indonesian Economy in Transition: Policy Challenges in the Jokowi Era and Beyond
Book SynopsisBy any indicator, Indonesia, the fourth most populous nation on earth, is a development success story. Yet 20 years after a deep economic and political crisis, it is still in some respects an economy in transition. The country recovered from the 1997–98 crisis and navigated the path from authoritarian to democratic rule surprisingly quickly and smoothly. It survived the 2008–09 global financial crisis and the end of the China-driven commodity super boom in 2014 with little difficulty. It is now embarking on its fifth round of credible national elections in the democratic era. It is in the process of graduating to the upper middle-income ranks. But, as the 25 contributors to this comprehensive and compelling volume document, Indonesia also faces many daunting challenges — how to achieve faster economic growth along with more attention to environment sustainability, how to achieve more equitable development outcomes, how to develop and nurture stronger institutional foundations, and much else.Trade Review“This is a timely and much-needed book. There are very few recent books on Indonesia with such a comprehensive analysis of not just mainstream economic policies, but also most importantly the key issues of human capital, inequality, social welfare, labour, food security and natural resource management. This book will not only be crucial for policy discourse but for all stakeholders who care about Indonesia making the transition not only to a high-income economy, but an inclusive one.” — Mari Pangestu, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia“The Indonesian Economy in Transition: Policy Challenges in the Jokowi Era and Beyond is one of the most important books that discusses the Indonesian economy post–Asian Financial Crisis. A must-read for anyone who wants to understand contemporary Indonesian economy.” — M. Chatib Basri, former Minister of Finance of Indonesia

Taylor & Francis Ltd Economics of Engineering Education in India
Book SynopsisThis volume focuses on the key trends and major developments in engineering education in India and reflects on the effects and challenges of its expansion on economic growth and development.Analysing several dimensions relating to the status and growth of engineering education, this book: Highlights, in the overall policy environment, the rapid growth of engineering education, imbalances in the growth between different branches of engineering education, changing trends and patterns in their growth, quality of education, gender inequality, and inequality by caste, region and economic status and labour market conditions that influence the demand for engineering education Reflects on the rapid growth of private sector in engineering education and its effects on equitable access, quality and other dimensions of higher education, and on overall development of the economy Investigates the socio-economic characteristics of the students going to private colTrade Review“Engineering as a field of university study in India has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 25 years, most of it in private institutions and of highly varied quality, from the internationally renowned Indian Institute of Technology to low-quality unaided private institutions. It is this huge and varied engineering education system which India depends on to make it a major player in the global economy. Professor Tilak’s book—a detailed study of this complex subject based on extensive empirical data—is an essential reading for understanding whether the system as it now exists will be able to fill this role.” - Martin Carnoy, Vida Jacks Professor of Education and Economics & Lemann Foundation Professor Stanford University “Engineering education is one of the most important aspects of Indian higher education and central for India's future economy. It is also not well understood and significant parts of it are subpar. Dr. Tilak has provided a thoughtful data-driven and policy-relevant analysis.” - Philip G. Altbach, Research Professor and Distinguished Fellow, Center for International Higher Education, Boston College, USA “This is possibly the first study to provide a systematic economic analysis of engineering education in India. Its juxtaposition of the macro-level with the micro-level makes it most valuable for research scholars and policy practitioners in India, while its recognition of the wider international context will interest readers in the outside world.” - Deepak Nayyar, Emeritus Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and former Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi “A must reading for higher education policy makers in India, focusing on engineering by a prominent scholar in the field.” - George Psacharopoulos, Formerly with London School of Economics and the World Bank “There are few in India who can match the expertise of Professor Jandhyala B G Tilak in the field of research in Higher Education especially the economics aspects of education at all levels. As Vice Chancellor, National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA), his contributions to the promotion of higher education research are of historic significance. In the emerging decades, India will compete effectively with higher education in U.K. and U.S.A, largely because of valuable services of Prof. Tilak and a few others. This book surveys the literature of world-renowned writers Robert Solow, Fritz Machlup, Theodoe W Schultz and others with his interpretations of their theories applicable to Indian highe.r engineering education. This book is a valuable addition to the study of higher education in India and aboard.” - Vedagiri Shanmugasundaram, Founder Vice Chancellor, Monomaniam Sundaranar University; Former Director, Reserve Bank of India and IDBI; Senior Visiting Member, Linacre College, University of Oxford “Two great sectors are at the heart of higher education’s many practical contributions to society through learning and research – engineering and health. In Economics of Engineering Education, Professor Tilak takes us inside engineering education and illuminates the role it plays in development. Get engineering education right, he shows us, and the nation is on track. The solid data and considered judgments in this book are making a crucial contribution to policy, the profession and the next generation that will build India.” - Simon Marginson, Professor of Higher Education, University of Oxford; Director ESRC/RE Centre for Global Higher Education “ I find this book very useful for evidence- based decisions and informed public policy regarding engineering education. The book illustrates emergence of private education and its impact on equitable access, equity, quality, affordability and related issues currently faced in India. The systematic approach and methodology adopted in the study and credible data may help in framing right policies. Prof. Tilak’s book will be useful to recalibrate the current approach to engineering education and offer policy pointers to regain the glory.” - Bhushan Patwardhan, Chairman, National Assessment and Accreditation Council; Former Vice Chairman, University Grants Commission; Distinguished Professor, Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University “Professor J.B.G. Tilak is one of India’s best-known social science scholars and an international authority on the Economics of Higher Education. His most recent book is a timely contribution to academic and policy knowledge of engineering education in India. Engineering, with its many variants, civil, mechanical, electrical, and production is a key profession in any economy. As Tilak shows, engineering education in India has undergone a sea change over the past three decades. The implications of this need to be understood by both private and public institutions and, of course, students. This is the purpose of this excellent study.” - W. John Morgan, Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow, Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data, and Methods (WISERD), Cardiff University “This commendable book presents a critical analysis of some of the major challenges in engineering education using valuable primary and secondary data. These challenges include: overzealous expansion and the resultant supply-demand mismatches which are reflected in high rates of unemployment, inequities in education by gender, caste/religion, and region, poor quality of education as revealed in lower employability of graduates besides, limited public financing and issues relating to affordability. "This rigorous research study systematically analyses some of these critical issues in engineering education in India with a futuristic perspective. I have no doubt that it will attract the attention of academia as well as administrators and policy makers. Given the paucity of systematically conducted research studies in this field, this study undoubtedly makes an invaluable reading on the subject of a great contemporary relevance.” - Narendra Jadhav, Former Vice Chancellor, Savitribai Phule (Pune) University; Former Member, Planning Commission, Former Member of Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha. “Economics of Engineering Education in India is an insightful new book by Jandhyala B G Tilak describing and analyzing in depth the remarkable growth, issues related to sources of funding, quality, employment of graduates, and policies for public and private engineering education in India. Professor Tilak is a well-known and respected scholar who recognizes the significance of highly skilled human capital in engineering fields to sustained per capita economic growth. This and more universal basic education are desperately needed for broader development in India. As this occurs, this book, which is likely to become the go-to source, can help make the provision of good quality engineering education’s vital role more economically efficient.” - Walter W. McMahon, Professor of Economics, and of Education, University of Illinois “This is an impressive single-authored book on a timely topic painstakingly researched by an eminent scholar, authoritatively articulating ideas in the discourses on the emergence and quest for future direction of higher education for development with deliberate expansion of the STEM fields in which Engineering plays an important role. By engaging theories and ideas about human capital development thorough empirical inquiry based on secondary and primary data, the author strengthens the merit of the book. Furthermore, by using a methodological approach beyond univariate account to engage in multivariate analysis that provides a rich and multidimensional analysis, the book informs the reader of the complexity of the interactions between the explanatory factors in the educational sector and entrenched socially significant determinants such as gender, caste, and region/state, as well as the dynamics of the public and private sectors of higher education and its financing. In addition to researchers and policymakers in the public and private sectors, this book will be an invaluable source to other education stakeholders including students, international agencies, and NGOs in their respective efforts to understand and effectively tackle the development of inclusive human resources.” - N’Dri Assié-Lumumba, Professor, Cornell University; President, World Council of Comparative Education Societies Table of Contents1. Cambridge University Press Applied Nonparametric Econometrics
Book SynopsisThe majority of empirical research in economics ignores the potential benefits of nonparametric methods, while the majority of advances in nonparametric theory ignore the problems faced in applied econometrics. This book helps bridge this gap between applied economists and theoretical nonparametric econometricians. It discusses in depth, and in terms that someone with only one year of graduate econometrics can understand, basic to advanced nonparametric methods. The analysis starts with density estimation and motivates the procedures through methods that should be familiar to the reader. It then moves on to kernel regression, estimation with discrete data, and advanced methods such as estimation with panel data and instrumental variables models. The book pays close attention to the issues that arise with programming, computing speed, and application. In each chapter, the methods discussed are applied to actual data, paying attention to presentation of results and potential pitfalls.Trade Review'A clear and thorough treatment of nonparametric and semiparametric econometrics. The text will be valuable to empirical researchers, who can expand their methodological toolkits without resorting to difficult journal articles. Even advanced topics, such as nonparametric instrumental variables and nonparametric models with panel data, are treated at an accessible level.' Jeffrey M. Wooldridge, Michigan State University'Taking theory to data is difficult for most students, but this book provides substantial help by providing cogent explanations of practical considerations, including how well methods that work 'in theory' might be expected to work with real data in the quantities that researchers might have available.' Paul W. Wilson, Clemson University'Daniel Henderson and Chris Parmeter have provided a modern survey of nonparametric econometrics. Newcomers will enjoy their applications-oriented introduction to this growing field. Theorists will find a compact survey of the most important foundations. Researchers of all sorts will want to add this valuable resource to their libraries.' William Greene, Stern School of Business, New York University'This well-written textbook represents a rigorous yet accessible introduction to nonparametric methods, one that makes clear the importance of these techniques for empirical research. Henderson and Parmeter have performed a valuable service for students throughout the social sciences.' Steven N. Durlauf, University of Wisconsin'Nonparametric econometric methods have by now become quite common in applied research, yet, as in almost all areas of research, theory precedes practice. The current hands-on approach of the book comes to fill the gap and offer the applied researcher a manual of how to properly use these methods without compromising rigor. It will complement other more theoretical books on the subject and as such it will prove very useful to many practitioners and students alike.' Thanasis Stengos, University of Guelph'The authors advertise right at the beginning that this book was written to help bridge the gap between applied economists and theoretical nonparametric econometricians. Having worked on both sides I can say that this book keeps this promise in almost all aspects: the way it is written, the selection of topics, and the selection of methods.' Stefan Sperlich, Université de Genève'The aim of this book is to teach nonparametric methods to applied economists. The book does an excellent job of achieving this objective. The mix of rigor and intuition is perfect, and the availability of software to go with the book makes it easy to implement the techniques being taught.'
