University of Massachusetts Press Altering American Consciousness: The History of
Book SynopsisVirtually every American alive has at some point consumed at least one, and very likely more, consciousness altering drug. Even those who actively eschew alcohol, tobacco, and coffee cannot easily avoid the full range of psychoactive substances pervading the culture. If the use of drugs is a constant in American history, the way they have been perceived has varied extensively. Just as the corrupting cigarettes of the early-20th century became the glamorous accessory of Hollywood stars and American GIs in the 1940s, only to fall into public disfavour later as an unhealthy and irresponsible habit, the social significance of every drug changes over time. This work shows how the identity of any psychoactive substance owes as much to its users, their patterns of use, and the cultural context in which the drug is taken, as it owes to the drug's documented physiological effects. Rather than seeing licit drugs and illicit drugs, recreational drugs and medicinal drugs, ""hard"" drugs and ""soft"" drugs as mutually exclusive categories, it challenges readers to consider the ways in which drugs have shifted historically from one category to another.

University of Massachusetts Press The Secret Leprosy of Modern Days: Narcotic
Book SynopsisAlthough the topic of habitual narcotic use first surfaced in the United States during the 1820s, it was not until after the Civil War that it became a subject of widespread public attention. Beginning in the 1870s, an increasingly urgent discussion of what some described as a national epidemic of ""drug addiction"" could be found in both medical journals and the popular press. Today, nearly a century and a halflater, the term is so commonplace we speak of people being ""addicted"" to just about anything. Yet, as Timothy A. Hickman argues in this revealing interdisciplinary study, the meaning of addiction has always been as much cultural as scientific and never fixed. In ""The Secret Leprosy of Modern Days"", Hickman resituates the idea of addiction within its original late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century context. Through close readings of a broad range of literary, medical, and legal texts, he shows how Americans of that era conceptualized the dangers of drug addiction in terms of other preoccupations and fears. Anxieties about the accelerating pace of technological change, the loss of personal autonomy, and the degeneration of society attributed to both foreign influences and a decline of manliness all fed into a widespread sense of cultural crisis - a crisis of which the spiraling ""drug problem"" was seen as both contributing cause and consequence. Not surprisingly, Hickman points out, deeply held assumptions of class, race, and gender also figured into the popular understanding of addiction. While white middle-class addicts were often depicted as helpless victims of the social and economic pressures of modern life, their less privileged and nonwhite counterparts were regarded as morally weak. Over time the distinction between ""addict as patient"" and ""addict as criminal"" came to be accepted by the emerging medical establishment and codified into law, eventually finding expression in the Harrison Narcotics Act of 1914, the first national anti-narcotic legislation in the history of the United States - and the basis for much thinking about addiction and drug policy ever since.

Histria LLC The Silver Bullet Solution: Is it time to end the
Book SynopsisWhat’ s been missing the past 30-years that prevented voters and leaders from hearing or acting upon the Gierach call — and the Civil Society call— for legalized, controlled and regulated drugs and drug markets? Why the public repulsion from the Silver Bullet Solution to the many-tentacled, drug-prohibition monster?Have you lost a child to fentanyl or heroin overdose? Are you worried about losing a loved one to drug addiction or drug accident? Is your neighborhood threatened by violent crime and gangs? Is it safe for your child to get to school, go to the park, or play outside? This book offers answers to these challenges, and it broadcasts the idea that there is something “ YOU CAN DO” about it. You can help the new public opinion evolve.Trade ReviewUnited Nations’ recreational drug-control conventions serve an endless “World War on Drugs,” though the UN Charter foundational purpose is 'to maintain international peace and security.' Gierach’s book challenges world leaders, again, to abandon intuitive, drug-war intolerance, as did his 2014 draft of a proposed amendment of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs."—Jindrich Voboril, National Coordinator for Drugs Policy of Czech Republic

Academica Press Opium Consumption and Experience in India: From
Book SynopsisOpium Consumption and Experience in India offers a "cultural biography" of opium in the subcontinent. It spans the Raj and India after independence. The book examines the "social lives" of opium in India, beginning as a commodity in the sixteenth century to its social transformation and singularization in the eighteenth century, and its decline from the mid-nineteenth century to obsolescence in the twentieth century to new "paths and diversions" in our own times. The book attempts to illuminate how opium came to occupy a central place in the "cultures of consumption" and also in the socio-economic and political life of a people. How did opium become embedded in a social ethos where it not only served as a social lubricant but soon morphed into a narco-identity for the people of India. The identification of India as a land of "great opium eaters" spawned the propaganda of a "civilizing mission" that ushered in a new era of material exploitation and political domination. This had a significant impact on the development and regulation of opium and its use.

Academica Press Ghazipur, The Opium Mint: From 1820 to the
Book SynopsisThe Opium Factory of Ghazipur has a history all its own. Like most other colonial enterprises, it was developed to further colonial mercantile and imperial interests. Ghazipore, as it was known in British India, was the headquarters of the Benaras opium agency, which included almost the whole of the then-United Provinces. Directed and driven by metropolitan capital, the opium factory's success signaled the rise of colonial India as a major exporter of raw opium. Nevertheless, the opium factory was not simply a site of production of "provision" opium; it was where metropolitan capital and imperial science and technology intertwined to ensure the vitality of a colonial establishment. Technology was not everything, however. Raising the standard of opium manufacturing required the services of the "opium chemist," who became vital to the efficacy of the entire operation. Colonial research focused on the extraction of alkaloids to meet the growing demand of medicinal opium and its imports to England during and after World War II. From a site of manufacture of crude raw opium, the factory evolved into a modern pharmaceutical concern that was totally redesigned and reequipped. Renamed the "Government Opium and Alkaloid Works," some elements of continuity render this 200-year old monument a legacy embodying a powerful narrative of how "opium made the world go round." This work is an attempt to revisit and uncover the many trajectories of the Ghazipur opium factory, which still remains a site of production in the twenty-first century.

VeloPress Spitting in the Soup
Book SynopsisDoping is as old as organized sports. From baseball to horse racing, cycling to track and field, drugs have been used to enhance performance for 150 years. For much of that time, doping to do better was expected. It was doping to throw a game that stirred outrage. Today, though, athletes are vilified for using performance-enhancing drugs. Damned as moral deviants who shred the fair-play fabric, dopers are an affront to the athletes who don't take shortcuts. But this tidy view swindles sports fans. While we may want the world sorted into villains and victims, putting the blame on athletes alone ignores decades of history in which teams, coaches, governments, the media, scientists, sponsors, sports federations, and even spectators have played a role. The truth about doping in sports is messy and shocking because it holds a mirror to our own reluctance to spit in the soup-that is, to tell the truth about the spectacle we crave. Book SynopsisThis book explores the lived experiences of people who interact with needle and syringe program services in Western Sydney, Australia, including participants and industry workers. It locates the research within the wider context of harm reduction and drug policies. It addresses the question "what do needle and syringe programs do?" and seeks to unpack the agency of human and non-human factors to consider the ‘more than human’ effects of these programmes. Alongside a critical materialist perspective used to interpret the empirical findings, the book demonstrates that needle and syringe programs create new possibilities for engaging with the world by changing the material conditions of illicit drug consumption. It draws on the conceptual contributions of post-humanist thinking from assemblage theory, actor-network theory, and cognate scholarship. Consideration is given to transferable findings and insights for international contexts. The book speaks to scholars and postgraduate students in the areas such as sociology, criminology, social work, critical public health, cultural studies, and related fields.Table of ContentsIntroduction: What do needle and syringe programs do?.- Chapter 1 Beyond needles: the work done by engagements with service provision.- Chapter 2 The harm reduction subject and demarginalisation.- Chapter 3 Tarred with the same brush: The courtesy stigma of care.- Chapter 4 Assembling the effects of harm reduction services.- Conclusion: What needle and syringe programs do?.
