    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThe domestic phase of America's war on drugs has received considerable criticism over the years. Until recently, however, most critics have not stressed the damage of the international phase to America's Latin American neighbors. That lack of attention has begun to change and Ted Carpenter chronicles the disenchantment with the hemispheric drug war. Some prominent Latin American political leaders have finally dared to criticize Washington while at the same time, the U.S. government seems determined to perpetuate, if not intensify, the anti-drug crusade. Spending on federal anti-drug measures also continues to increase, and the tactics employed by drug war bureaucracy, both in America and abroad, bring the inflammatory 'drug war' metaphor close to reality. Ending the prohibitionist system would produce numerous benefits for both Latin American societies and the United States. In a book deriving from his work at the CATO Institute, Ted Carpenter paints a picture of this ongoing fiasco.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisOpium Consumption and Experience in India offers a "cultural biography" of opium in the subcontinent. It spans the Raj and India after independence. The book examines the "social lives" of opium in India, beginning as a commodity in the sixteenth century to its social transformation and singularization in the eighteenth century, and its decline from the mid-nineteenth century to obsolescence in the twentieth century to new "paths and diversions" in our own times. The book attempts to illuminate how opium came to occupy a central place in the "cultures of consumption" and also in the socio-economic and political life of a people. How did opium become embedded in a social ethos where it not only served as a social lubricant but soon morphed into a narco-identity for the people of India. The identification of India as a land of "great opium eaters" spawned the propaganda of a "civilizing mission" that ushered in a new era of material exploitation and political domination. This had a significant impact on the development and regulation of opium and its use.

Book SynopsisThe Opium Factory of Ghazipur has a history all its own. Like most other colonial enterprises, it was developed to further colonial mercantile and imperial interests. Ghazipore, as it was known in British India, was the headquarters of the Benaras opium agency, which included almost the whole of the then-United Provinces. Directed and driven by metropolitan capital, the opium factory's success signaled the rise of colonial India as a major exporter of raw opium. Nevertheless, the opium factory was not simply a site of production of "provision" opium; it was where metropolitan capital and imperial science and technology intertwined to ensure the vitality of a colonial establishment. Technology was not everything, however. Raising the standard of opium manufacturing required the services of the "opium chemist," who became vital to the efficacy of the entire operation. Colonial research focused on the extraction of alkaloids to meet the growing demand of medicinal opium and its imports to England during and after World War II. From a site of manufacture of crude raw opium, the factory evolved into a modern pharmaceutical concern that was totally redesigned and reequipped. Renamed the "Government Opium and Alkaloid Works," some elements of continuity render this 200-year old monument a legacy embodying a powerful narrative of how "opium made the world go round." This work is an attempt to revisit and uncover the many trajectories of the Ghazipur opium factory, which still remains a site of production in the twenty-first century.

Book SynopsisGlobalization and attendant modernization has increased both the supply and the demand for drugs around the world. Drug abuse is no longer the concern of only the developed world. Countries without histories of drug use, particularly developing countries, are now reporting problems of abuse because they have become transit points for international drug trafficking. This volume reviews the international status of drug abuse. Specific topics covered include drug abuse in the developing world, emerging drugs and poly drug use; gateway drugs, cultural views of drug use and state of the art methodologies employed in research on drug abuse.Table of ContentsContents: Introduction; Part I Drug Abuse in the Developing World: Reawakening the dragon: changing patterns of opiate use in Asia, with particular emphasis on China's Yunnan Province, Clyde B. Book SynopsisEver since the Shanghai convention in 1909, the threat posed to human well-being by drug abuse has led countries around the world to take action to deal with their drug problems. There are wide variations in the policies pursued, but most countries try to reduce both the supply of and the demand for drugs. Unfortunately, there is little research consensus on the respective merits of these two approaches or about the best ways to pursue them. Consequently, control and prevention policies are mostly driven by political considerations, economic realities and cultural expectations, though research has played an important part in formulating and evaluating treatments for drug addiction. This volume reviews studies on drug abuse prevention and treatment strategies under five main areas: 1. Reducing supply - strategies to control the flow of drugs from production to retail distribution; 2. Reducing demand - prevention of drug use at all stages of involvement and consumption levels; 3. Book SynopsisThis is the first volume that focuses on the lifespan neurobehavioral factors likely to determine susceptibility to alcohol abuse and its consequences. The chapters offer careful analysis of the effects of ethanol on the fetus, the infant, the adolescent, and the adult. The authors include behavioral neuroscientists and clinical neuropsychologists. Their topics range from the neurochemical and neuroanatomical consequences of prenatal alcohol to the cognitive consequences of prenatal alcohol on preschool and school-age children. The impact of genetics on sensitivity to alcohol is considered in terms of analytic tests using techniques of behavioral genetics and molecular biology. The consequences of exposure to alcohol during breastfeeding are described in experiments with human infants. The alcoholism that develops in adulthood is analyzed through the experimental study of relapse from alcohol deprivation and assessment of neuropsychological impairments and treatment for alcoholics. DraTrade Review"...this is a very well integrated book that comprehensively surveys an important field. It could easily serve as the basis for a graduate seminar, but it is written clearly enough that undergraduates could also use it profitably. Bench scientists and clinicians will also find it helpful."—Journal of Studies on Alcohol"This book gives a comprehensive account of studies of the effect of alcohol on the developing brain. Every chapter is clearly written with a good summary which explains the current status of knowledge related to the topic....provides a complete review on the current animal models for studies in alcoholism. It is a useful reference for those interested in the field and it provides useful information for physicians who manage patients with problems of drug abuse."—Le Journal Canadien Des Sciences Neurologiques"There are many original thoughts and ideas in this book which readers will find stimulating. Some chapters, such as those on genetics and alcohol and lactation, will be of particular interest to groups of health workers. There is much general information in the book which covers specific aspects of treatment and management of alcohol problems and this would benefit clinical personnel."—Drug and Alcohol Review"This book will be of value to those engaged in animal or human research on the effects of alcohol on the developing brain. It has a wealth of information for those interested in the fetal alcohol syndrome and less severe effects of alcohol on the fetus."—Alcohol And Alcoholism"The book as a whole is quite useful, representing a good overview of the various approaches researchers have taken to understand the effects of prenatal and early postnatal exposure to alcohol. It serves as a helpful entry to the study of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Effects. I would recommend this book for both clinical practitioners who are interested in getting a concise overview of the current state of the art and for researchers already in the field who wish to follow studies of their colleagues' advances in other arenas of prenatal alcohol research."—Journal of the International Neuropsychological SocietyTable of ContentsContents: J.H. Book SynopsisTrade ReviewA Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2016 "Sex Testing is the first comprehensive account of the various sex and gender tests that sports authorities have devised from the 1930s on for female athletes. It offers great documentation of significant developments, well-written throughout, accompanied by incisive, penetrating insights as to what is going on below the surface in the world of women's sports. It is a stellar, informative read that public libraries should acquire. It is certainly, above all, a scholarly resource that colleges and universities should purchase."--ARETE, publication of the Sport Literature Association."Sociology of gender scholars will find the book of interest given its historical evidence of the ways in which sex testing reflected 'larger cultural perceptions of womanhood' in the twentieth century."--Gender and Society"Pieper's well-written and carefully crafted narrative and analysis provides enormous insight into a topic previously unexplored at such depth."--Sport History Review"Pieper does an exceptional job of detailing the history and methods of sex/gender testing and of connecting the phenomenon to larger sociological issues about appropriate physical activity for women. . . . Essential."--Choice"Chock full of terrific research from primary sources. . . . Pieper's message comes through loud and clear: sex testing is a political act. It is about enforcing gender norms, not ensuring fair play."--Women's Review of Books"Pieper takes on the complex and infinitely important topic of sex testing in women's sport with fresh insight and a measured hand. In the process, she deftly unpacks how attempts to 'control' sex are continually fraught with elements of sexism, gender anxieties, and geopolitical tensions. This is an enlightening and necessarily disturbing analysis."--Jaime Schultz, author of Qualifying Times: Points of Change in U.S. Women's Sport"For the first time, someone is pulling together the complete history of sex testing in sport. Book SynopsisTakes readers into the ritualized world of mainstream American addiction treatment. This book explores the puzzling question: why do addiction counselors dedicate themselves to reconciling drug users' relationship to language in order to reconfigure their relationship to drugs?Trade ReviewWinner of the 2012 Edward Sapir Book Prize, Society for Linguistic Anthropology "[A] fresh and thought-provoking perspective on the interaction between addiction professionals and their clients. [Scripting Addiction] is also a remarkable window onto American personhood in general. It shows in unusually precise terms how this personhood is produced by linguistic interactions that shape the institutions in which they occur."--Lorna Rhodes, Social Service Review "In simplest terms, this book can be read as an ethnographic description of a mandated outpatient drug-treatment program for homeless women. In another sense, it includes a brief history of changing views toward social work in the US since the 1950s. Although not explicitly organized as such, it is also a thoughtful, critical commentary on the rationale, methods, and efficacy of such treatment."--Choice "Summerson Carr's focus on linguistic practices is a refreshing approach to studying welfare, addiction, and therapy, exposing the way language gets nudged around to yield things that resemble palatable truths."--Chantal Butchinsky, Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute "The added value of this ethnography lies in its uncovering of the profound impact of ideological assumptions about language and of ideology in language on everyday institutional practices and, ultimately, the everyday lives of clients by providing a detailed account of institutional practices in mainstream American addiction treatment."--Karen Mogendorff, Social Anthropology "There is much to like about this intriguing and subtly argued book. Its human interest and drama, as the story of Rhonda and Louise suggests, is not the least of it. I came away from the detailed scenes of interviews and board meetings impressed with Carr's intelligence and thoughtfulness as an ethnographer. Readers can get a vivid sense of both clients and staff. Best of all is how concrete this study is... Carr's evidence and analysis are clear. She reveals a living language, whose flow she traces from intake interviews, to therapy sessions, to client case meetings, to board rooms."--Stephanie Muravchik, Society "Scripting Addiction screams with many voices that there is no neutral language (Bakhtin, 1984). Therefore, it is a powerful call to better realize what is happening in and through language at sites all around us that carry huge potential to either serve humankind, or cause suffering. It is an important and well-articulated call."--Mark A. Acker presents a fascinating account of how addicts' negative image came to dominate public and official perceptions, as well as how it forced some users into the mold. Her careful analysis of research findings will make this book of interest to historians, drug-abuse workers, and anyone else who wants to examine the origins of American drug policy. -- David F. John Wiley and Sons Ltd Harm Reduction in Substance Use and HighRisk

Book SynopsisHarm Reduction is a philosophy of public health intended as a progressive alternative to the prohibition of certain potentially dangerous lifestyle choices. Recognising that certain people always have and always will engage in behaviours which carry risks, the aim of harm reduction is to mitigate the potential dangers and health risks associated with those behaviours. Harm Reduction in Substance Use and High-Risk Behaviour offers a comprehensive exploration of the policy, practice and evidence base of harm reduction. Starting with a history of harm reduction, the book addresses key ethical and legal issues central to the debates and developments in the field. It discusses the full range of psychoactive substances, behaviours and communities with chapters on injecting, dance drugs, stimulant use, tobacco harm reduction, alcohol use and sex work. Written by an international team of contributors, this text provides an essential panorama of harm reduction in the 21Trade Review“Overall this book is a very good read for those interested in addiction issues and could be used as an excellent reference book for future policy making in harm reduction.” (Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine, 1 October 2013) Taken overall in the context of its strengths and shortcomings, and as one of the few textbooks of its kind, it is a welcome resource for the field of harm reduction. We would recommend this book to those unfamiliar with the discipline, particularly individuals entering academia and those interested in advocacy and policy. Book SynopsisYou know just how serious a problem alcoholism has become for our country. Frankly speaking, it has taken on the proportions of a national disaster. So spoke Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in 2009 as the government launched its latest anti-alcohol campaign. Challenging the standard narrative of top-down implementation of policy, Anna Bailey's Politics under the Influence breaks new ground in the analysis of Russian alcoholism and the politics of the Putin regime. The state is supposed to make policy in the national interest, to preserve the nation's health against the ravages inflicted by widespread alcohol abuse. In fact, Bailey shows, the Russian state is deeply divided, and policy is commonly a result of the competitive interactions of stakeholders with vested interests. Politics under the Influence turns a spotlight on the powerful vodka industry whose ties to Putin's political elite have grown in influence since 2009. Bailey does an excellent job, using a vast array of sources woven together in convincing narratives, of bringing illumination to the "black box" of public policy construction under Putin. * The Russian Review *In this detailed analysis of the Russian state's ambivalent attitude toward vodka, Anna Bailey argues that excessive alcohol consumption has plagued Russian society for centuries. * Survival: Global Politics and Strategy *This is a well-researched, useful and practical analysis of a problem which has beset Russia for centuries: how to control the Russian love of alcohol—given its highly negative effect on public order and the country's demographic situation—without significantly endangering the income that it produces in the form of (paid) taxes that contribute to the country's economic and social development? * Europe-Asia Studies *Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Contradictions of Alcohol Policy 1. Book SynopsisAgainst the backdrop of a post-Soviet state set aflame by geopolitical conflict and violent revolution, Narkomania considers whether substance use disorders are everywhere the same and whether our responses to drug use presuppose what kind of people those who use drugs really are. Jennifer J. Carroll''s ethnography is a story about public health and international efforts to quell the spread of HIV. Carroll focuses on Ukraine where the prevalence of HIV among people who use drugs is higher than in parts of sub-Saharan Africa and unpacks the arguments and myths surrounding medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in Ukraine. What she presents in Narkomania forces us to question drug policy, its uses, and its effects on normal citizens.Carroll uses her findings to explore what people who use drugs can teach us about the contemporary societies emerging in post-Soviet space. With examples of how MAT has been politicized, how drug use has been tied to ideas of good citizenTrade ReviewViolence and war are inevitably entangled with public health crises. Jennifer Carroll's book vividly shows how those crises are made even worse when unfounded assumptions lead to the condemnation of certain groups * Current History *Carroll efficiently explores how the term addiction allows for all kinds of contradictory and composite meanings. * The Lancet *Jennifer Carroll has done a magistral job in helping the rest of us understand the global and local processes that have produced the current predicament of Ukrainian injecting drug users. The single most cautionary aspect of this book lies in its warning against the use of dismissive presence in society. * Medical Anthropology Quarterly *Narkomania is an important contribution to the field of medical anthropology, but the author's unique perspective and extensive fieldwork make it relevant across Ukrainian studies. Carroll creates a tapestry in which drug use and addiction are seamlessly interwoven with political changes that are resonant far beyond Ukraine's borders. * Harvard Ukrainian Studies *This book is a novel, poignant, and sincere contribution to anthropology and to Ukrainian studies. It will make a thought-provoking read for anyone researching or interested in contemporary Ukraine and its vulnerable population, including students, policymakers, and government employees. * Anthropologica *

Book SynopsisVirtually every American alive has at some point consumed at least one, and very likely more, consciousness altering drug. Even those who actively eschew alcohol, tobacco, and coffee cannot easily avoid the full range of psychoactive substances pervading the culture. If the use of drugs is a constant in American history, the way they have been perceived has varied extensively. Just as the corrupting cigarettes of the early-20th century became the glamorous accessory of Hollywood stars and American GIs in the 1940s, only to fall into public disfavour later as an unhealthy and irresponsible habit, the social significance of every drug changes over time. This work shows how the identity of any psychoactive substance owes as much to its users, their patterns of use, and the cultural context in which the drug is taken, as it owes to the drug's documented physiological effects. Rather than seeing licit drugs and illicit drugs, recreational drugs and medicinal drugs, ""hard"" drugs and ""soft"" drugs as mutually exclusive categories, it challenges readers to consider the ways in which drugs have shifted historically from one category to another.

Book SynopsisThis open access book explores the increasing role of psychoactive substances in contemporary everyday life, focussing on women's use. Drawing on an ethnographic study in Sweden, it uses cultural studies and queer phenomenology to analyse the women’s narratives of drug use relating to themes that encompass social, legal, cultural, embodied and gendered perspectives on drugs in the contemporary Western world. It examines topics such as stigma, happiness, children, the body, gifts, the drug market, medication, sickness and health and also the orientation of themselves towards others, to social and cultural norms, to drug laws and to the substances. It discusses how drug related spaces and directions be analysed in terms of gender and class, and how, in turn, the directions of contemporary society and culture can be affected by drug use. It speaks to academics in Sociology, Criminology, Ethnology, Gender studies, Law and History.Table of Contents1. Introduction.- 2. Book SynopsisThis publication contains information about the licit movement of the internationally controlled narcotic drugs included in the Schedules of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. This includes information on cultivation of opiate raw materials, on extraction of alkaloids from opium, poppy straw and concentrate of poppy straw; on the manufacture of consumption, utilization, and stocks of opiates and opioids; and international global trade in narcotic drugs as well as in individual countries/territories. The publication also contains the estimated requirements of narcotic drugs for each country and territory.
