Paul Holberton Publishing Ltd The Splendor of Germany: Eighteenth-Century
Book SynopsisThe Crocker Art Museum has one of the finest and earliest German drawings collections in the United States. Featuring artists such as Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner, Anton Raphael Mengs and Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, The Splendor of Germany examines the major developments in German draughtsmanship over the course of the eighteenth century. Published to coincide with the collection’s 150th anniversary. In the 21st century, the collecting and study of 18th-century German drawings has become a major focus for American museums. One of the finest collections of them, however, has been in California for 150 years. The superb drawings at the Crocker Art Museum, from a Baroque altarpiece design by Johann Georg Bergmüller to a Neoclassical mythology by Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein, provide a panorama of German draughtsmen and draughtsmanship throughout the century. Many of the drawings are remarkable for their modernity. A self-portrait by Johann Gottlieb Prestel bypasses convention to achieve a direct, unmediated likeness. Well-placed slashes with brush and black ink define the features below his peruke outlined in black chalk. Other drawings encapsulate specific developments and styles, such as Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner’s Lazarus and the Rich Man, which shows the florid dynamism of the Augsburg Rococo. A full range of eighteenth-century German artists are represented here, from the satirizing moralists Johann Elias Ridinger and Daniel Chodowiecki to the Classicist and friend of the art theorist Johann Joachim Winkelmann, Anton Raphael Mengs. Landscape artists are especially well represented, such as the key figure Johann Georg Wille, printmaker to the French king Louis XV, and generations of artists he taught and influenced all the way to the early Romantic landscapists. The exhibition and catalogue gather together a variety of dynamic and sensitive portraits, charming scenes of daily life, and often humorous moralizing subjects, as well as narratives, both religious and mythological, from the late Baroque to Neoclassicism. In the realm of landscape, the depth of the collection allows the exhibition to trace schools and influences—in addition to Wille’s mentioned above—even in families such as that of Prestel, whose wife and daughter were both landscapists. It also allows it to demonstrate the great variety of works by single artists such as Christoph Nathe, represented by four landscapes in four different genres including a splendid scene near Görlitz. Some artists, in fact, work in several genres as in the case of Johann Christian Klengel, whose works include the scene of a family by candlelight, a farmstead landscape, and a sketchbook that he carried through the countryside to record picturesque views. This is a rare opportunity for the public and for drawings enthusiasts. Two-thirds of the drawings in the exhibition have not been shown before; most of the exceptions have not been seen since 1989. Because of the drawings’ 150-year history of limited exposure, the state of preservation of the collection is exceptional, as is the condition of the new acquisitions included in the exhibition.

Ashmolean Museum Raphael: The Drawing
Book SynopsisThe Ashmolean Museum and the Albertina are collaborating on a two-part exhibition project that will examine anew the role and the significance of drawing in Raphael's career. The Ashmolean holds the greatest collection of Raphael drawings in the world, and the Albertina is the custodian of a major collection including some of the most beautiful and important of the artist's sketches. Taken together, the two collections provide extraordinary resources that, amplified by carefully-selected international loans, will allow us to transform our understanding of the art of Raphael. The Oxford exhibition is based on new research by Dr Catherine Whistler of the Ashmolean Museum and Dr Ben Thomas from the University of Kent, in collaboration with Dr Achim Gnann of the Albertina. It will take Raphael's art of drawing as its focus, with the concept of eloquence as its underlying structure. Oratory runs as a linking thread in Raphael's drawings, which stand out for the importance given to the study of gestures, facial expressions, and drapery. Moreover, Raphael treated the expressive figure of the orator - poet, philosopher, muse, apostle, saint or sibyl - in fascinating and significant ways throughout his life. This selection of drawings demonstrates how Raphael created a specific mode of visual invention and persuasive communication through drawing. He used drawing both as conceptual art (including brainstorming sheets) and as a practice based on attentive observation (such as drawing from the posed model). Yet Raphael's drawings also reveal how the process of drawing in itself, with its gestural rhythms and spontaneity, can be a form of thought, generating new ideas. The Oxford exhibition will present drawings that span Raphael's entire career, encompassing many of his major projects and exploring his visual language from inventive ideas to full compositions. The extraordinary range of drawings by Raphael in the Ashmolean and the Albertina, enhanced by appropriate loans, will enable this exhibition to cast new light on this familiar artist, transforming our understanding of Raphael's art.

You’ll also find finishing techniques for maximizing the impact of the illusion, such as how to cut out and display your artwork and which angles are best for photographing your work to capture the full effect. There are 20 fantastic pictures included for you to cut out and show off!Trade ReviewLearn how to make simple flat shapes spring to life with this colouring book with a difference. A few stokes of the pencil and a parrot takes flight, a flying carpet takes off, a secret passageway goes deep into the ground and a playful kitten breaks through the paper to wave a paw. As a keen colourist I have quite a few colouring books so it is good to find one that takes the basic idea and goes somewhere new with it. The book opens with an explanation of how to make a drawing look three dimensional by using the rules of perspective to create an optical illusion. Learn how to use colour to show shadows, work out where the light is coming from and finally cut out the right sections to enhance the effect. It sounds complicated but it is simpler than you think, and suitable for a beginner. All you need is a spectrum of coloured pencils, a good rubber and a few other basics that most homes will have like a pencil sharpener, scissors or craft knife and a ruler. No brand names are used and the picture just shows a tin with a basic set of 24 colours; great to know that you don’t need to splash out on the most expensive professional quality pencils. Each of the 20 projects has a page sized photograph of the completed image plus nine steps with photographs of the work being done. There is a key showing all the colours used (nothing unusual, just basic shades without metallics) and the first picture uses two colours to show where the shadows lie and where the light source is coming from. At the back are all the projects printed on one side of the smooth white card with a useful dotted line where you can cut it out. Would that all coloring books had these features! There are tips scattered throughout and a guide showing how to photograph your work with your cellphone, prior to posting it proudly online with a hashtag indicating the source. This book, together with a tin of pencils would make a lovely gift for somebody… if you can bear to part with it! I’d love to see more innovative coloring books like this, well done Zakka Workshop. -- Rachel A Hyde * myshelf.com *

Book SynopsisFail-proof colored pencil techniques to transform good portrait art into detailed works of realismTrade ReviewFrom Library Journal "An accomplished portrait artist and author, Kullberg begins her book in a defensive tone. Why, she asks, write a book about the details of hedges, apple blossoms, striped couches, and keyholes--the things that fill in the background and foreground of portraits? It's clear, though, that any artist will advance his or her colored pencil technique immeasurably through this book. The use of reference photos, demonstrations of feathering vs. definite strokes and the dense vs. airy approach, and excellent 'Frequently Asked Questions' boxes all make for a significant contribution to the teaching of this style of drawing. This is a fine advance for students who have mastered Bet Borgeson's Basic Colored Pencil Techniques." Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.
