  • Bacterial Virulence: A Conceptual Primer

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Bacterial Virulence: A Conceptual Primer

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis textbook introduces in an engaging way the fundamentals of how pathogenic bacteria interact with, and are virulent within, the human host. To inspire and educate the next generation of microbe hunters, the author, Microbiologist and Scientist Anthony William Maresso, integrates the major findings of the field into a single, easy-to-understand volume emphasizing a molecular appreciation of the concepts underlying bacterial infectious diseases. The work explores such themes as the history of Microbiology, bacterial structure and physiology, bacterial toxins, secretion systems, and adhesins, the host immune system and its battle with bacteria, biofilms, sepsis, and technologies/techniques to the present day. Fully illustrated in concept and packed with idea-provoking challenges highlighting “out-of-the-box” thinking, the work moves beyond being just a review of the scientific literature intent on equipping the next generation of Microbiologists and their teachers with the knowledge to confront, and hopefully one day defeat, the insidious microbes which undermine human health. This textbook is a resource for undergraduate, graduate, and medical students, as well as other health-oriented learners, postdoctoral scholars, basic scientists, and professors intent on expanding their knowledge of bacterial infection and virulence mechanisms.Table of Contents1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book examines the often tough questions raised by infectious diseases through essays that explore a host of legal and ethical issues. The authors also offer potential solutions in order to ensure that past errors are not repeated in response to future outbreaks. The essays touch on a number of key themes, including institutional competence, the accountability and responsibility of non-state actors, the importance of pharmaceuticals, and the move towards a rights-based approach in global health.Readers gain insights into such important questions as follows: How can we help victims in other countries? What (if any) responsibility should be placed upon international organizations whose actions exacerbate infectious diseases? How can we ensure that pharmaceutical research helps all communities, even those who cannot afford to pay for the products? While broadly covering global health law, the book adopts an inter-disciplinary approach that draws on public international law, philosophy, international relations, human rights law, and healthcare economics. As such, it is a valuable resource for academic libraries, appealing to scholars and postgraduates engaged in relevant research, as well as to those engaged with global health and policy at the international level.Table of ContentsThe International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement response to Ebola 2014-2016.- Responding to health emergencies: the ethical and legal considerations for militaries.- The World Health Organization and NGOs in the context of public health emergencies: Complementation, juxtaposition or supplantation?.- The Law of Responsibility and the World Health Organization: a Case Study on the West African Ebola Outbreak.- Lessons from the Past: Cholera, Scientific Knowledge, and the Longest-Standing Principle of International Health Law.- Ebola as a threat to international peace and security: the response of the UN Security Council.

Table of ContentsI: Alkohol.- 1 Grundlagen.- Alkohol als Substanz.- Zur Verstoffwechselung von Alkohol.- Bestimmung der Alkoholkonzentration.- Wirkung und Nebenwirkung.- 2 Erkennen.- Differenzierung: riskanter Gebrauch, schädlicher Gebrauch, Abhangigkeit.- Alkoholabhängige Patienten.- Patienten, die einen „schadlichen Gebrauch“ bzw. „Mißbrauch“ betreiben.- Patienten, die den Alkohol „riskant gebrauchen“.- Früherkennung: Testinstrumente, Klinik, Labor.- Klinik.- Labor.- Diagnostik von Alkoholproblemen.- Schädlicher Gebrauch/Mißbrauch.- Abhängigkeit.- Familiäre Folge- und Begleitprobleme.- Pränatale Schäden durch Alkoholkonsum suchtkranker Frauen.- Körperliche Folge- und Begleitprobleme.- Leberschäden bei chronischem Alkoholkonsum.- Pankreasschäden bei chronischem Alkoholkonsum.- Beschwerden des Magen-Darm-Traktes und chronischer Alkoholkonsum.- Rückwirkungen von Alkoholkonsum auf das Herz-Kreislauf-System.- Alkoholtoxische Schadigung des peripheren Nervensystems.- Alkohol, Blut und Immunsystem.- Alkoholkonsum und Lungenerkrankungen.- Alkoholkonsum und Stoffwechsel.- Alkoholkonsum und endokrine Funktionen.- Alkoholentzugssyndrom.- Kombinierter Konsum von Alkohol und anderen Suchtmitteln.- Komorbidität von psychischen Störungen und Alkoholismus.- Modellvorstellungen über das Verhältnis von Alkoholismus und seelischer Störung.- Alkoholismus und Angst.- Alkoholismus und Depression.- Alkoholismus und Persönlichkeitsstörung.- Alkoholismus und Psychosen.- Komorbidität von Alkoholismus und hirnorganischen Beeinträchtigungen.- Neuropsychologische Störungen in der Phase der Alkoholentgiftung.- Neuropsychologische Störungen im Intermediärstadium.- Das alkoholtoxische amnestische Syndrom (sog. „Wernicke-Korsakow-Syndrom“).- Alkoholdemenz.- Differential- bzw. Book SynopsisWhen new fellows join my lab, I give them some reading materials so that they can orient themselves in their assignment in a new eld. When fellows leave my lab, some after writing their dissertations, I prefer to give them a book as a symbolic present. I was longing for a book that contained something on more or less eve- thing about the islets. At the same time, I wished it contained information as recent as possible. There are a few such books in the market but they are pretty outdated. I started picking islets myself from October 1990, when I joined the Rolf Luft Center, Karolinska Institutet. Over the years my fascination for islet research remained high. Since last year, I felt a stronger urge to do more for these mysterious and hidden mini-organs that are directly or indirectly involved in the pathogenesis of all forms of diabetes that affects ?250 million people in the world. After I launched the Islet (landesbioscience. com/journals/islets) and founded the Islet Society (isletso- ety. org), there was a momentum that could be utilized to create something equally meaningful i. e. this book. The idea cracked in September 2008. Starting September 19, 2008, I contacted an estimated 90% of the authors who published anything on the islets during 2007–2008 and who could be traced from the internet.Trade Review"It looks very comprehensive and covers all current areas of interest and includes chapters written by world renowned contributors - very nice!"Matthias von Herrath, MDProfessor and Director, Center for Type 1 Diabetes ResearchLa Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, La Jolla CA, USA "This book will be welcomed by islet researchers and clinicians interested in the latest developments and theories from which new therapeutics for diabetes can emerge". Martha Pavlakis, MDAssociate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical SchoolMedical Director, Kidney and Pancreas TransplantationBeth Israel Deaconess Medical CenterBoston, MA, USA "The field of islet biology is assuming increasing importance with the recognition that beta-cell dysfunction is a critical feature of type II diabetes. Improving b-cell function and/or b-cell mass may be the best approach to treating diabetes. Thus, the publication of a book covering so many aspects of this field is timely". Fred Levine, M.D., Ph.D.Professor, Burnham Institute for Medical ResearchDirector, Sanford Children's Health Research CenterLa Jolla, CA, USA "The growing prevalence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes make islet cell biology a critical concern for a wide range of scientists and health professionals. From anatomy and developmental biology, through islet physiology and biochemistry, to issues of immunology and transplantation, this book is a terrific resource".Jonathan M.W.Slack, Ph.D., F.Med.Sci. Director, Stem Cell Institute, University of Minnesota, Medical SchoolMinneapolis, MN, USA "This book allows you to enjoy an adventurous and instructive guided tour in the archipelago of the islets of Langerhans. A team of expert and enthusiastic explorers will not only conduct the voyager through almost all niches of this complex and fascinating environment, but also provide him with clues and keys for future exploration of still hidden sites".Prof. Pellegrino MasielloDept. of Experimental Pathology,University of Pisa,Pisa, Italy "The pancreatic islet is a complex mini-organ whose dysfunction is critical in all forms of diabetes. This book provides a comprehensive review of the molecular and cellular processes in islet development, gene expression, and physiology and reviews how a better understanding of the pancreatic islet will advance efforts to develop new therapeutic approaches for diabetes. This book should be quite useful for anyone interested in the pancreatic islet or diabetes".Alvin C. Powers, M.D.Joe C. Davis Chair in Biomedical Science Professor of Medicine, Molecular Physiology and BiophysicsDirector, Vanderbilt Diabetes CenterVanderbilt UniversityNashville, TN USA "A very timely book on the Islet of Langerhans that coincides with the realization that pancreatic ß-cell failure is key to all forms of diabetes mellitus and research in the field is exploding. It contains very thoughtful chapters, each by renown experts in their field, and tackles the complexity of this micro-organ in health and disease very comprehensively and thoughtfully. It will likely become a Reference for years to come for basic researchers, clinicians and students interested is diabetes research"Marc Prentki, PhDProfessor of Nutrition and BiochemistryCanada Research Chair in Diabetes and MetabolismMDRC DirectorMontreal, QCCanada Table of ContentsCHAPTER 1 : Microscopic anatomy of the human islet of Langerhans - Peter In't Veld and Miriam Marichal CHAPTER 2 : The comparative anatomy of islets - Scott Heller CHAPTER 3: Approaches for imaging of islets: recent advances and future prospects - Ulf Ahlgren and Martin Gotthardt CHAPTER 4: Islet-cell Development - Anabel Rojas, Adrian Khoo, Juan R. Belgium The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth and he that is wise will not abhor them. Ecclesiasticus 38:4, quoted by Selman Waksman when accepting the 1952 Nobel Prize for Medicine that was awarded for the discovery of the first effective antituberculosis drug. streptomycin. which was derived from the soil bacterium, Streptomyces grisells. 1. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE This book has been published at the close of the twentieth century when the medical profession and the general community are increasingly concerned about the threat of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB)[1. 2]. However, at this epoch, it is enlightening to move back from our immediate concerns about MDRTB 'hot spots' in Asia, South America, and the former Soviet Union [3], and to place our current predicament in an historical context. If the results of the global survey of antituberculosis drug resistance conducted by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) can be extrapolated, only 2. 2% of TB cases worldwide are due to multi drug resistant strains [3]. At the beginning of the 20th century, all TB cases were refractory to all available therapies. Great advances had been made during the 19th century in the understanding of the epidemiology and pathogenesis of TB, and in the diagnosis of the disease (reviewed in references 4-7).Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisDDDDDDDDDDDD Effective management logically follows accurate diagnosis. Such logic often is difficult to apply in practice. Absolute diagnostic accuracy may not be possible, particularly in the field of primary care, when management has to be on analysis of symptoms and on knowledge of the individual patient and family. This series follows that on Problems in Practice which was con cerned more with diagnosis in the widest sense and this series deals more definitively with general care and specific treatment of symp toms and diseases. Good management must include knowledge of the nature, course and outcome of the conditions, as well as prominent clinical features and assessment and investigations, but the em phasis is on what to do best for the patient. Family medical practitioners have particular difficu1ties and ad vantages in their work_ Because they often work in professional isolation in the community and deal with relatively small numbers of near-normal patients their experience with the more serious and more rare conditions is restricted. They find it difficult to remain up-to-date with medical advances and even more difficult to decide on the suitability and application of new and relatively untried methods compared with those that are 'old' and well proven. Their advantages are that because of long-term continuous care for their patients they have come to know them and their families FOREWORD well and are able to become familiar with the more common and less serious diseases of their communities.Trade Review`The information is clearly laid out and well presented. • The Endocrinology of Prostate Tumours

Springer The Endocrinology of Prostate Tumours

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisTumours of the prostate are the commonest types of neoplasm in the male. Whilst the benign form is virtually a universal condition in the ageing male, malignant tumours rank amongst the top causes of cancer death. Despite the fact that the involvement of the testis in the growth of the prostate has been recognised for almost two centuries, it was not until the early 1940s that Charles Huggins' studies on the effect of orchidectomy and oestrogen therapy on prostatic cancer initiated endocrine manipulation in the management of this malignancy. During the 1960s progress in the understanding of the mechanism of hormone action, achieved through advances in molecular biology and the recognition of certain aspects of hormonal control in relation to the genome, introduced a new dimension for approaching endocrine manipulation of prostatic tumours. By the end of that decade a new scientific discipline devoted to prostate research had been born, which brought together investigators in the fields of molecular biology, biochemistry, endocrinology, immunology, urology and pathology to search for the cause and to explore methods for advancing the management of abnormal prostatic growth. Since then a wealth of scientific data has accumulated on the prostate in which endocrinology has manifested itself as the cardinal aspect to which most of the findings can be related.Table of Contents1 The development and morphology of the prostate.- 2 Histopathology of prostatic tumours.- 3 Hormonal environment of the normal prostate.- 4 Hormonal control and rationale for endocrine therapy of prostatic tumours.- 5 Biochemical and morphometric evaluation of prostatic epithelial and stromal cells.- 6 Metabolism of steroids in the prostate.- 7 Mechanism of action of androgens in the prostate.- 8 Analysis of steroid receptors in the prostate.- 9 Predictive role of steroid receptors in evaluating the response to endocrine therapy.- 10 The response of malignant prostate to endocrine treatment.- 11 The response of benign hypertrophied prostate to endocrine treatment.- 12 Experimental models in prostatic research.
