Book SynopsisThis is the first comprehensive overview of the exciting field of the 'science of science'. With anecdotes and detailed, easy-to-follow explanations of the research, this book is accessible to all scientists, policy makers, and administrators with an interest in the wider scientific enterprise.Trade Review'Wang and Barabási book is a manifesto for the science of science domain. Graduate students (as well as their mentors) owe the authors a debt of gratitude for this impressive synthesis of what is a fast-evolving field of research.' Pierre Azoulay, Massachusetts Institute of Technology'Analyzing quantitative aspects of science with state-of-art tools, Wang and Barabási have written an insightful and comprehensive book that will become a must-read for all scholars interested in science.' Yu Xie, Princeton University'In their engaging book, Wang and Barabási take a fresh look at the science of science. They convincingly argue that in the age of big data and AI applying the scientific method to science itself not only helps understand how science works but may even enhance it. We are compelled to consider the determinants of individual careers and what this means in the age of large-scale scientific collaborations. These and other questions around the meaning of scientific impact, in academia and beyond, make the book highly relevant to scientists, academic administrators and funders alike. By the time the final, forward-looking chapter ends we are hooked on all the correlations and predictions, and so it is only fitting that we are invited to join in, to help shape the field which is likely to be driven by a human-machine collaboration.' Magdalena Skipper, Nature'Overall, I found this book very stimulating. It made me wonder whether in-depth metrics analyses of 'only' the subjective narratives of authors, such as the references list they select, actually creates a foundation on which to form judgement rather than opinion? Namely, what fraction of these publications analysed for their metrics were actually underpinned by their data? As well as provoking thought, this book offers a feast of references, 424 in all. There are such further enticing reads as reference 396, Life3.0: Being Human in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. To conclude, I recommend this book for your library, and maybe even take it for your summer beach reading.' John R. Helliwell, Journal of Applied Crystallography'… a text that should appeal to practicing scientists curious about the structure of the whole scientific enterprise, academic administrators and policy makers interested in evidence-based decision-making, and researchers interested in contributing further to the "science of science." There is no better, handier, and more readable work to appeal to such audiences … Highly recommended.' M. Oromaner, Choice ConnectTable of ContentsIntroduction; Part I. The Science of Career: 1. • Elementary Japanese Volume One: This Beginner

Tuttle Publishing Elementary Japanese Volume One: This Beginner

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is a comprehensive beginning-level Japanese textbook and language learning program.Elementary Japanese is designed for students who are just beginning their study of the Japanese language at the first-year college level or on their own. The author and contributors have created a highly structured approach to learning Japanese based on acquiring the fundamental patterns and constructions of the language as well as the Japanese writing system including the primary Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji characters. Each volume of this two-book set is designed for one semester of study. The books feature detailed grammatical explanations which make them extremely useful as references and for review purposes when traveling to Japan or preparing for the Japanese Language Proficiency Examination (JLPT). Printable PDFs and MP3 audio files are included with each volume, available for free download online, making this a great way to learn Japanese on your own while ensuring that you learn the correct pronunciation. The recordings also help you build up your listening comprehension skills. After completing this course, you will be able to: Describe yourself, your family and your friends. Talk about daily events using basic vocabulary and grammatical constructions. Understand conversations on these topics as well as classroom activities. Read Japanese articles and write short compositions and letters. Elementary Japanese Volume One covers the first semester of a college-level Japanese beginner course. It contains 14 lessons, each representing one week of instruction over multiple sessions. Each lesson consists of a dialogue, usage notes, grammar notes, exercises, new kanji and explanations, and new vocabulary. Authentic Japanese script is used throughout; the two volumes together introduce 313 Kanji. All media content is alternatively accessible on the Tuttle Publishing website.Trade Review"I am self-studying using this book and book two of the series. This book is excellent for the student who is self-studying, because all of the grammar an vocabulary are explained thoroughly. There is very little left up to the student to try to figure out; and though the exercises are designed for use in a classroom, they can be easily adapted. Additionally, this book is all-in-one in that it offers dialogues, cultural notes, grammar, vocabulary, and kanji in one volume. It also comes with a CD that contains the readings, pronunciation of all the vocabulary, and additional exercises." —Goodreads"Elementary Japanese (EJ) has the strong advantage of starting in hiragana. The greetings and usage at the beginning come just at the right time. EJ has clear grammar and usage explanations. The number and pace of the kanji are very good. I like the fact that EJ is fairly cheap & that it doesn't have a workbook. I use some exercises in the book as homework & can add my own things without feeling guilty for not using all of a workbook. The listening comprehension exercises are excellent, and I really like the recordings of the dialogues and the vocabulary. I would suggest giving kanji in the vocabulary lists to help Chinese students of Japanese. The illustrations for the exercises are useful and often funny." --Professor Janet Fair, Loyola University"While these particular Tuttle textbooks are suitable for, and typically used in, classroom settings, including in some of the best universities in North America, they can also serve as an excellent out-of-class reference tool and can very well complement formal language classes or other study materials for the self-learner. From my experience, this series should appeal to a broad range of people, including individuals working on their own, professional people working with a tutor, or students in a classroom setting. I have personally used the Tuttle Elementary and Continuing textbooks both as part of university classes and on my own, and I have been very satisfied with them." --Lingholic blog

  • Classical Chinese for Everyone: A Guide for

Hackett Publishing Co, Inc Classical Chinese for Everyone: A Guide for

Book SynopsisIn just thirteen brief, accessible chapters, this engaging little book takes "absolute beginners" from the most basic questions about the language (e.g., what does a classical Chinese character look like?) to reading and understanding selections from classical Chinese philosophical texts and Tang dynasty poetry. "An outstanding introduction to reading classical Chinese. Van Norden does a wonderful job of clearly explaining the basics of classical Chinese, and he carefully takes the reader through beautifully chosen examples from the textual tradition. An invaluable work." —Michael Puett, Harvard UniversityTrade Review"Van Norden has pulled off the seemingly impossible. With his direction, a serious student could make real headway in learning classical Chinese—while learning a great deal about early Chinese thought as well." —Robert E. Hegel, Washington University in St. Louis"For most people, learning Classical Chinese is a daunting task, but for those who are fortunate enough to begin with Van Norden's intelligently written and wittily designed Guide, it is far easier and, dare I say, much more fun than one might have thought." —Victor H. Mair, University of Pennsylvania"Classical Chinese for Everyone is great! Even if you don't want to learn classical Chinese, it is very philosophically interesting on the topic of how language affects thought. It is a corrective to Orientalist errors, and it is entertaining!" —Eric Kaplan, Emmy-winning writer and producer of Futurama, The Simpsons, and The Big Bang Theory"This is a book for anyone who would like to learn a bit of Classical Chinese. . . . If you, or one of your students, or someone on your holiday gift list are interested in a career as a Sinologist, or would like to learn just enough Classical Chinese to say you know a bit, or just like learning interesting things from a good teacher you should get this book. It is by far the most fun language textbook I have ever read." —Alan Baulmer, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, from a review on the Frog in a Well blog"I truly believe Van Norden’s textbook on classical Chinese is one of the best! Pros: 1) It’s very affordable and can be taught in a term. 2) It offers short lessons across a diverse scope of genres and readings, including poetry. 3) It’s self-contained and does not need to be supplemented with additional readings or glosses. 4) By adding related texts in classical Chinese or even in translation, instructors can enhance this textbook to make it more advanced. 5) The introductory section is a perfect introduction to the Chinese writing system. This is the textbook most of us have been waiting for!" —Chiu-Mi Lai, The University of Texas at Austin"[T]his book provides an excellent pedagogical tool for either teaching or self-study. The chapters are very short with very clear learning points presented in concise natural language so the reader never feels overwhelmed and gains a sense of mastery over each point. The size of the book is very manageable. Someone with (even very little) background in Chinese (either classical or modern) could easily work through the book in a couple of weeks. . . . Interested teenagers and adults without a formal background in philosophy, foreign languages, or grammar will be able to read and enjoy playing with translating the passages. It would be an ideal addition to any Introduction to Chinese Philosophy course." —Mog Stapleton, East China Normal University, in Teaching Philosophy"[A] terrific little book, one that fills a niche. Van Norden is a gifted writer when it comes to material geared to students, and the book is very lucid, engaging, and funny all at once. It is a pleasure to read." –Hagop Sarkissian, The City University of New York, Graduate Center, and Baruch College"Classical Chinese for Everyone: A Guide for Absolute Beginners is a unique and valuable introduction for novice learners of Classical Chinese. Its uniqueness lies in the author’s extraordinarily detailed and thorough explanations of the selected texts that serve to significantly minimize the intimidation factor that beginning Classical Chinese learners may anticipate. Learners are provided with easily accessible, step-by-step guidance through clear and concise explanations of the readings, as well as through the detailed commentaries that expound upon the circumstances in which they were written. This book should also stimulate language learner interest in furthering their understanding of Classical Chinese and Chinese literature, as well as motivate them to become serious students of Chinese language, culture, and history." —Haning Z. Hughes, Professor of Chinese, United States Air Force Academy, in the NECTFL Review

  • Stylish Academic Writing

Harvard University Press Stylish Academic Writing

Book SynopsisElegant ideas deserve elegant expression. Sword dispels the myth that you can’t get published without writing wordy, impersonal prose. For scholars frustrated with disciplinary conventions or eager to write for a larger audience, here are imaginative, practical, witty pointers that show how to make articles and books enjoyable to read—and to write.Trade ReviewSword has produced a sleek and, yes, nicely written guide based on the principle that ‘elegant ideas deserve elegant expression.’ Aiming to be useful to writers in almost any discipline, Sword defines stylish academic writing in the broadest terms. -- Jennifer Howard * Times Literary Supplement *[Sword’s] counsel is wise, efficiently written, and infectiously winsome. She advises academic writers to use anecdotes and carefully chosen metaphors, and to write opening sentences that encourage readers to keep reading. She has drawn from a massive array of academic articles (more than a thousand) and given particular attention to authors known for writing readable material… Helen Sword’s book contains much wisdom… Stylish Academic Writing contains superb counsel for academics who want to write with greater clarity and skill. -- Barton Swaim * Weekly Standard *Stylish Academic Writing offers pithy, thoughtful, and concrete guidance on ways to improve writing about scholarly research (or anything else for that matter) so that it is engaging to others… Teachers of writing at the college level will want to read the book so as to help stem the tide of overly formal, dry-as-dust term papers that are still standard fare in many classes. -- Dana S. Dunn * Psychology Today *Helen Sword’s brilliant little volume is in many respects the ideal companion to Stephen J. Pyne’s equally brilliant Voice and Vision: A Guide to Writing History and Other Serious Non-Fiction (Harvard) and equally deserving of a wider audience than its target group, which in this case comprises those academics who either write or have to put up with ‘impersonal, stodgy, jargon-laden, abstract prose.’ As Sword writes: ‘Elegant data and ideas deserve elegant expression.’ Featuring oodles of ideas and tips backed up by lashings of original research and bursting to the seams with case studies exemplifying the good, the bad and the ugly of academic writing (‘via a symbolic interactionist lens’ is one such monster), this is a must for writers in any discipline. -- William Yeoman * West Australian *[A] practical and useful book. -- Colin Steele * Australian Book Review *Surely it’s time to declare war on terms such as postsemioticist, flip-flop gates and feature theory, terms Orwell would surely have included under his definition of obscurity as a cuttlefish defensively spurting out ink. Anyway, let’s hope this excellent new book is a sign that things are about to change. -- Bradley Winterton * Taipei Times *Stylish Academic Writing challenges academics to make their work more consequential by communicating more clearly—and provides helpful hints and models for doing so. This is a well-crafted and valuable contribution that combines substance with style. -- Arne L. Kalleberg, Editor, Social ForcesAs an academic—staff or student—wouldn’t you like people to enjoy reading your work? In Stylish Academic Writing, Helen Sword offers dozens of suggestions as to how you might improve your work, get your argument across in a more appealing manner, and attract more readers. We can all learn something useful from this book, and it won’t involve a lot of effort. -- Malcolm Tight, Editor, Studies in Higher EducationOccasionally the tedium of reading an unending supply of poorly written manuscripts is upended by a cogent, well-written, piece. Helen Sword details why this is so prevalent and offers sage advice to beginning—and even senior—researchers on how to avoid dulling academic prose. I take her advice to heart. I hope to change my numerous bad habits and I dearly wish those submitting manuscripts would read this book. -- Rick K. Wilson, Editor, American Journal of Political ScienceIt’s a weird and complicated experience, picking up a book that covers familiar territory and realizing it’s better than what you might have written. That was the case when I first read Helen Sword’s Stylish Academic Writing. -- Rachel Toor * Chronicle of Higher Education *

  • TypologyUnderstanding the Bibles PromiseShaped

    Zondervan TypologyUnderstanding the Bibles PromiseShaped

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisTypology--Understanding the Bible's Promise-Shaped Patterns traces the patterns and similarities between people, events, and institutions in the Bible as they build on one another with escalating significance. It stimulates thought on the relationship between the Testaments and helps readers understand the dynamics of inner-biblical interpretation.Table of Contents1. Introduction to Promise-Shaped Typology Chapter one will discuss the biblical terms that give rise to the use of terms such as “typology” and “figurative interpretation.” Having established the biblical basis for the use of such language, the chapter will define the approach I will take to typology, set out parameters for my methodology, and discuss other approaches to the topic and work being done in this area. These include the similar but significantly different Richard B. Hays (intertextuality), and the far more similar approach of G. K. Beale (who now avoids the term intertextuality). Part 1: Persons 2. From Adam to New Adam Adam is referred to as a type of the one to come in Romans 5, but there are also significant parallels between Adam and Noah and then Adam and Israel’s king (among others). 3. Prophets, Priests, Kings The Deuteronomy 18 promise of a prophet like Moses gives rise to a series of prophets who are similar to him, and that line culminates in Jesus. Adam is a royal priest in the Garden, then Melchizedek has similar roles, before Israel is made a royal priesthood to God. Psalm 110 anticipates Jesus coming as a royal priest, and he makes his people to be a kingdom and priests (Rev 1:6). 4. The Righteous Sufferer Joseph, Moses, and David all suffer on the way to being exalted to leadership where they deliver God’s people. This pattern, supremely articulated in the Psalms and Job, is fulfilled in Jesus the suffering servant. 5. False Prophets, False Teachers, and Antichrist The New Testament compares false teachers and prophets to the likes of Balaam and others from the OT, seed of the serpent who typify those who oppose the gospel in the last days. This pattern culminates in the antichrist (1 John 2:18). Part 2: Events 6. Creation God built a cosmic temple that was later symbolized by the tabernacle and temple, which in turn point forward to the new heavens and new earth. 7. Judgment as De-creation The flood de-creates the world, and at the exile the symbol of the cosmos, the temple, was torn down. Peter speaks of how the unmaking of the first world by water anticipates the unmaking of the present world by fire (2 Pet 3). 8. Exodus and New Exodus Anticipated in Abraham’s life, experienced at the exodus from Egypt, and celebrated in the Passover, the exodus pattern becomes the paradigmatic salvation for God’s people. The prophets expect God to save his people in the future the way he saved them in the past. 9. Conquest The conquest of Canaan led by Joshua prefigures the coming of the new and better Joshua on a white horse with his name written on his thigh (Rev 19:16). Part 3: Institutions 9. Corporate Personality This concept informs much that will have been discussed to this point: the Bible’s dynamic between the one and the many, where the one can stand for the many and the many can be represented in the one. 10. Priesthood The author of Hebrews compares and contrasts the priests from Aaron’s line with the priest according to the order of Melchizedek. 11. The Sacrificial System The author of Hebrews likewise details the difference between the sacrifices. 12. Marriage God instituted marriage in the Garden of Eden, then used it to inform the covenant relationship between himself and Israel and Christ and the church.
