  • The Avocado Debate

Taylor & Francis Ltd The Avocado Debate

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisWhether smashed on toast or hailed as a superfood, the avocado has taken the world by storm, but what are the environmental and social impacts of this trendy fruit? This book does not seek to demonise the avocado and its many enthusiasts. Instead, it will illuminate consumers on the often unseen impacts of foods. A staple of cafes, restaurants, homes, and social media channels, demand for the avocado has grown exponentially over the past thirty years. From an everyday crop in South and Central America to a global phenomenon, this drastic change in demand has many consequences for people and the planet. As demand grows, so does the need for more land, with land clearances threatening habitats and biodiversity. As production grows, so does global distribution and the impacts that air and sea travel have on the environment. The shift from a local to a global product disturbs the local food system, raising serious questions around food sovereignty and food justice and the importanTrade Review"This book is a desperately needed examination into the extensive impact that our food system has on our planet."Randy Hayes, Founder of Rainforest Action Network"Every food that we eat has an impact on our planet and our society. Book SynopsisA rallying call for extending human rights beyond our physical selvesand why we need to reboot rights in our data-intensive world. Winner of the 2024 Balsillie Prize for Public Policy Shortlisted, 2024 Lionel Gelber PrizeOur data-intensive world is here to stay, but does that come at the cost of our humanity in terms of autonomy, community, dignity, and equality? In We, the Data, Wendy H. Wong argues that we cannot allow that to happen. Exploring the pervasiveness of data collection and tracking, Wong reminds us that we are all stakeholders in this digital world, who are currently being left out of the most pressing conversations around technology, ethics, and policy. This book clarifies the nature of datafication and calls for an extension of human rights to recognize how data complicate what it means to safeguard and encourage human potential. As we go about our lives, we are co-creating data through what we do. We must embrace that these data are a part of who we are, Wong explains, even as current policies do not yet reflect the extent to which human experiences have changed. This means we are more than mere subjects or sources of data by-products that can be harvested and used by technology companies and governments. By exploring data rights, facial recognition technology, our posthumous rights, and our need for a right to data literacy, Wong has crafted a compelling case for engaging as stakeholders to hold data collectors accountable. Just as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights laid the global groundwork for human rights, We, the Data gives us a foundation upon which we claim human rights in the age of data.

  • On Canvas - Preserving the Structure of Paintings

Getty Trust Publications On Canvas - Preserving the Structure of Paintings

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThroughout its long history in Western art, canvas has played an influential role in the creative process. From the Renaissance development of oil painting on canvas to the present day-through Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, and other art historical movements-the use of canvas has enhanced the scale of painting, freedom of brushwork, and spontaneity in technique. This book recounts some of that rich history in relation to corresponding developments in conservation practice. Rather than concentrating on the familiar concerns of cleaning and varnish removal, this volume considers the preservation of a painting's structure. By focusing on recent studies on the fundamental nature of canvas and its mechanisms of deterioration, the book explains new approaches to the conservation of both contemporary and historical art-including reversible, passive, and preventive treatments, particularly with respect to lining. Written by Stephen Hackney, a conservation practitioner and leader in conservation research, On Canvas is the first book to take a comprehensive look at this important subject and is destined to become an invaluable resource for the field.

  • Collecting Mesoamerican Art before 1940: A New

Getty Trust Publications Collecting Mesoamerican Art before 1940: A New

Book SynopsisThis book traces the fascinating history of how and why ancient Mesoamerican objects have been collected. It begins with the pre-Hispanic antiquities that first entered European collections in the sixteenth century as gifts or seizures, continues through the rise of systematic collecting in Europe and the Americas during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and ends in 1940—the start of Europe’s art market collapse at the outbreak of World War II and the coinciding genesis of the large-scale art market for pre-Hispanic antiquities in the United States. Drawing upon archival resources and international museum collections, the contributors analyze the ways shifting patterns of collecting and taste—including how pre-Hispanic objects changed from being viewed as anthropological and scientific curiosities to collectible artworks—have shaped modern academic disciplines as well as public, private, institutional, and nationalistic attitudes toward Mesoamerican art. As many nations across the world demand the return of their cultural patrimony and ancestral heritage, it is essential to examine the historical processes, events, and actors that initially removed so many objects from their countries of origin.Table of ContentsIntroduction: The Art of Ancient Mesoamerica, Collections Forged before 1940 - Mary E. Book SynopsisForget everything you’ve heard about adult language learning: evidence from cognitive science and psychology prove we can learn foreign languages just as easily as children. An eye-opening study on how adult learners can master a foreign lanugage by drawing on skills and knowledge honed over a lifetime.Adults who want to learn a foreign language are often discouraged because they believe they cannot acquire a language as easily as children. Once they begin to learn a language, adults may be further discouraged when they find the methods used to teach children don't seem to work for them. What is an adult language learner to do? In this book, Richard Roberts and Roger Kreuz draw on insights from psychology and cognitive science to show that adults can master a foreign language if they bring to bear the skills and knowledge they have honed over a lifetime. Adults shouldn't try to learn as children do; they should learn like adults. R

  • Teachers Reflecting on Boredom in the Language

Equinox Publishing Ltd Teachers Reflecting on Boredom in the Language

Book SynopsisThis book investigates teacher and student boredom from the perspective of the teacher and illustrates how thinking about different aspects of this negative emotion might enhance reflective practices. It consists of seven chapters. The first four (Chapters 1-4) are devoted to the role of positive and negative emotions in L2 learning, conceptualizations of boredom, theories accounting for this negative emotion, and a brief overview of student and teacher boredom-related studies carried out in educational psychology and L2 education. The second part (Chapters 5-6) is empirical in nature. It reports on a mixed-methods investigation which tapped learner and teacher boredom from the perspective of EFL secondary school practitioners. It focused on: (1) teacher-perceived causes of learners' boredom, (2) causes of teachers' own boredom, (3) ways in which teachers confront student boredom in the classroom, (4) ways in which teachers deal with their own boredom, (5) factors that underpin teacher and student boredom, (6) ways of combating student and teacher boredom. The third part of the book (Chapters 6-7) integrates teachers' recommendations with outcomes of previous research to propose a reflective practice model of dealing with boredom in the classroom as well as strategies that can be employed to minimize teacher boredom.Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: Emotions in the language classroom Chapter 2: Conceptualizing boredom Chapter 3: Perspectives on boredom, its causes and solutions Chapter 4: Researching boredom in L2 learning and teaching Chapter 5: Boredom in the L2 classroom: Listening to teachers’ voices Chapter 6: Integrating theory and practice: Reflective practice with respect to boredom Chapter 7: Awareness-raising activities stimulating reflection on L2 boredom Conclusion Appendix 1: Teacher Boredom Questionnaire Appendix 2: A Lesson Report

Book SynopsisBerwick and Chomsky draw on recent developments in linguistic theory to offer an evolutionary account of language and humans' remarkable, species-specific ability to acquire it.“A loosely connected collection of four essays that will fascinate anyone interested in the extraordinary phenomenon of language.”—New York Review of BooksWe are born crying, but those cries signal the first stirring of language. Within a year or so, infants master the sound system of their language; a few years after that, they are engaging in conversations. This remarkable, species-specific ability to acquire any human language—“the language faculty”—raises important biological questions about language, including how it has evolved. This book by two distinguished scholars—a computer scientist and a linguist—addresses the enduring question of the evolution of language.Robert Berwick and Noam Chomsky explain that unti

Book SynopsisA short, accessible primer on human memory, its workings, feats, and flaws, by two leading psychological researchers. Why do we vividly recall a traumatic childhood event but forget where we left our keys five minutes ago? How can a scent take us back fifty years while a colleague’s name eludes us? In this compact introduction, two leading psychological researchers describe memory—how it works and why it sometimes doesn’t; how it can be tricked, trained, or improved; and what changes with time. In a manner as engaging as it is informative, Fergus Craik and Larry Jacoby explain the strengths and weaknesses of memory. They trace evolving ideas about memory’s function and present a down-to-earth account of modern views. Citing the latest research, they outline the processes for acquiring and retrieving memories and explore the distinction between conscious and unconscious processes. With insights into the workings of the brain, Craik and

Book SynopsisA major collection of essays and interviews from an iconic 20th-century philosopher in five volumes, now all available together in paperback. Roland Barthes was a restless, protean thinker. A constant innovator—often as a daring smuggler of ideas from one discipline to another—he first gained an audience with his pithy essays on mass culture and then went on to produce some of the most suggestive and stimulating cultural criticism of the late twentieth century, including Empire of Signs, The Pleasure of the Text, and Camera Lucida. In 1976, this one-time structuralist outsider was elected to a chair at France’s preeminent Collège de France, where he chose to style himself as a professor of literary semiology until his death in 1980. The greater part of Barthes’s published writings has been available to a French audience since 2002, but now, translator Chris Turner presents a collection of essays, interviews, prefaces, book reviews, and other journalistic material for the first time in English and divided into five themed volumes. Volume three, Masculine, Feminine, Neuter, consists of his writing on literature, covering his peers and influences, writers in French and other languages, contemporary and historical writers, and world literature. Trade Review"Given the diversity of these pieces in terms of history and content, it is crucial that the translator has made a good job of briefly contextualizing all the pieces and that the translations understand, especially in relation to the gendering that operates in the French language and to some of the more recondite references, that the renderings into English need, periodically, the helping-hand of an attuned and scholarly – that is experienced – editor and translator of Barthes." * H-France Review *Table of ContentsPre-Novels Recovering the Unburies Treasure (On Popular Poetry) The Man-Eater (On Zola’s Nana) Maupassant and the Physics of Misfortune The Cathedrals of Novels (On Victor Hugo’s Notre-Dame of Paris) Round Table Discussions New Pathways of Literary Criticism in France A Personal Statement on Robbe-Grillet The Two Sociologies of the Novel Alain Girard: ‘The Diary’ Parallel Lives Pleasure in Language Edoardo Sanguineti Preface (to Ecyclopédie Bordas, Volume VIII) Preface (to Jacques Prévert, Fatras) Argument and Prospectus: A Letter to Philippe Roger Preface (to Ecyclopédie Bordas, Volume IX) Interview-Preface to Littérature occidentale From Them to Us ‘It All Comes Together’ Masculine, Feminine, Neuter

Book SynopsisA concise, accessible introduction to language endangerment and why it is one of the most urgent challenges of our times. 58% of the world's languagesor, approximately 4,000 languagesare endangered. When we break this figure down, we realize that roughly ten percent of languages have fewer than ten language keepers. And, if one language stops being used every three months, this means that in the next 100 years, if we do nothing, 400 more languages will become dormant. In Endangered Languages, Evangelia Adamou, a specialist of endangered languages and a learner of her own community language, Nashta, offers a sobering look at language endangerment and what is truly lost when a language disappears from usage. Combining recent advances from the Western scientific traditionfrom the fields of linguistics, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, language attrition, population genetics, and natural language processingand insights from Indigenous epistemology, theory, and ethics, Adamou examin

Book SynopsisAdvice, strong opinions, and personal revelations by the world's greatest writers - exclusively researched for this new bookTrade Review"The ideal keepsake for readers, writers and everyone who appreciates the exquisite power of words... Inspirational."—Artsbeat"The perfect recipe to get the creative juices flowing... Contains hundreds of insightful quotes by famous writers and personalities, from Jane Austen to Julian Barnes, Leo Tolstoy to Patti Smith, Virginia Woolf to Henry David Thoreau... [From] motivational to purely relatable."—CentMagazine.co.uk"Not just another book of trite quotes... Unlike much of this genre, it offers both useful advice and insight... Every Day A Word Surprises Me takes a very simple, not to say hackneyed format, and makes something really quite entertaining and useful out of it... Thanks to some imaginative categorisation and sourcing that takes in published interviews, private journals and letters, any writer will find something of use here... Thanks to the provision of proper sources for all the quotes, including links to web pages for many, they become starting points for further investigation... The book becomes a gateway to as rich an investigation of the art of writing as the reader wishes to make it. This is a book that will benefit from being read with a smartphone in one hand, ready for background googling and link following."—CreativeReview.co.uk"As an antidote to creative block, Phaidon has sought to collect 700 quotes in order to guide readers through the most existential questions about life and love, self-doubt, booze, and the everlasting haunt of rejection... Other than outworn 'inspirational quotes' on websites like Goodreads or Brainyquote, the pocket-size guide mainly contains exclusive words extracted from little-known letters, memoirs and personal notebooks." —DazedDigital.com"A prolonged witty publication, containing quotes of the ego and arrogance. But to my surprise I found a collection of over 700 insightful quotes by writers through the ages and from across the globe... By page three I already had seven friends that I wanted to pass this book onto once I had finished it... A delightful book with its mix of font's throughout, irregular type size and hardback cover it's a graphic nerds' dream... Every Day a Word Surprises Me is one of those rare books containing no images that you will want to come back to time and time again."—55factory.net"The varied typography on every page makes it all the more readable and fun to dip into."—Mature Times"This collection is full of its own surprises and hard earned advice, communicated with the eloquence and clarity that only the world's finest writers could summon... inspirational and insightful."—Project Calm"This is the perfect coffee table or bedside table book: to take and give, or to borrow, to re-read often and without a precise scheme."—Slow-Words.com"An inspiring collection of selected wisdom fom a host of well-known and iconic writers... On a wide variety of subjects, feelings and experience."—The Essential Journal"Discussed in the back page column NB, with much focus on 'authorial advice'."—TLS (Times Literary Supplement)"In this compilation, striking imagery, insightful humour and paradoxical wisdom abound... The thematic structure makes for many rewarding contrasts of both attitude and tone.. There is plenty of witty brevity here... Variety of presentation is everything. Through a range of font forms, cases, sizes and layouts, the design reflects and enhances the one or message of the words in question... While there are countless websites offering "inspirational writer quotes" for free, these kinds of details more than justify the duration of collection quotes in book form."—TLS (Times Literary Supplement)

It illustrates every sense of every entry with quotations, from the earliest that can be found to a recent example, showing exactly how the word has been used throughout history. This new edition is not just a minor update but a comprehensive revision of Sheidlower''s groundbreaking text for the internet age. • Comprehensibility in Language Assessment: A

Equinox Publishing Ltd Comprehensibility in Language Assessment: A

Book SynopsisComprehensibility is considered central to successful communication (Munro & Derwing, 1995a, 2007). Yet, despite the crucial role it plays in communication and the contribution it makes towards the assessment of spoken language ability, comprehensibility has occupied an ambiguous position in language testing. At times, it is feature-driven, taking a linguistically-atomistic approach with little reference to context or communicative purpose, treating comprehensibility as an abstract construct made up only of linguistic components. At other times, the assessment of comprehensibility is an intuitive action, relying on a holistic sense of understanding by the assessor and rarely going beyond the speaker's utterances to include listener characteristics. The lack of a perspective that encompasses broader linguistic and socio-pragmatic factors that contribute to achieving meaning in spoken language has motivated us to propose the current manuscript as an approach to understanding, defining and assessing comprehensibility. In this monograph, we argue that conceptualising comprehensibility as a multidimensional construct and adopting a broader perspective to understanding and analysing it for communication purposes would benefit the fields of second language assessment and second language acquisition.Table of Contents1.
